For frequent, demanding trail use, the Toyota 4Runner is the strongest choice in this group. The 2026 Honda Passport is the better-balanced option when comfortable daily driving matters as much as dirt roads and occasional trails. The 2026 Subaru Outback suits drivers who want standard all-wheel drive, generous clearance and everyday practicality for moderate off-pavement travel.
Your trailer, route difficulty and exact powertrain should decide the final purchase. Maximum tow ratings are not interchangeable with payload capacity or proof that a particular loaded trailer is safe for every trim.
Quick answer: which SUV fits which job?
- Choose the Toyota 4Runner when regular off-road travel is the main requirement and you are willing to accept a firmer, less car-like daily-driving experience than the Passport. Edmunds identifies its four-wheel-drive SR5 as useful off-road and says capability rises with off-road-oriented grades such as TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter and TRD Pro.
- Choose the 2026 Honda Passport for a mixed commute, family use and dirt roads or occasional trails. Edmunds found it smoother over bumps and more car-like than the 4Runner, while still rating it suitable for less severe off-pavement use.
- Consider the 2026 Subaru Outback if standard all-wheel drive, up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance and moderate trail ability matter more than maximum towing. Subaru describes the Wilderness grade as providing upgraded off-road capability.
These are different interpretations of “off-road.” A maintained gravel road, a rocky two-track and a route with deep ruts place very different demands on suspension, traction systems, clearance and tires. Rank the route you actually drive rather than buying from a generic capability label.

What “best” means for this comparison
A useful ranking has to separate five questions:
- How often and how hard will you leave pavement? Occasional gravel access is a different requirement from weekly trail travel.
- What is the trailer’s loaded weight? Use the trailer as it will be loaded, not its empty brochure weight.
- Which engine or hybrid system is in the exact vehicle? The Outback’s two quoted tow limits and the 4Runner’s two quoted limits vary by powertrain.
- How much comfort do you need every day? The independent Edmunds comparison gives the Passport a ride and driving-manner advantage over the 4Runner.
- What equipment is actually fitted? Ground clearance by itself does not establish trail performance. Verify drivetrain, traction systems, underbody protection, hitch equipment and the vehicle’s payload rating.
The available evaluations do not provide a complete, apples-to-apples set of approach and departure angles, payload limits, fuel-economy figures, maintenance costs or insurance costs. Those omissions prevent a defensible total-cost or geometry ranking.
Toyota 4Runner: the off-road-first choice
Why it leads for regular trail use
Among these candidates, the 4Runner has the clearest case for repeated off-road trips. Edmunds says even a four-wheel-drive SR5 starts with useful suspension articulation and ground clearance. Buyers who expect more demanding routes can move to TRD Off-Road or the more specialized Trailhunter and TRD Pro grades, which add off-road hardware and traction technology according to the comparison.
That range of grades matters. A base vehicle that can reach a trailhead is not automatically equivalent to a grade equipped for repeated ruts, loose surfaces or technical sections. Compare the exact grade’s drivetrain and underbody equipment rather than assuming every 4Runner has the same capability.
Towing and powertrain choice
The cited comparison lists the 2.4T 4Runner at a 6,000-pound maximum and the hybrid at 5,800 pounds. Those are different limits, so selecting the hybrid or turbocharged model is not a trivial detail for a buyer close to the rating. Confirm the current Toyota towing guide and the vehicle’s door-jamb payload label before signing a purchase order; Toyota’s 2026 newsroom search result also states a 6,000-pound maximum, but the underlying page was not accessible in the source review.

Daily-driving trade-off
Edmunds’ comparison of a 2025 4Runner with the redesigned 2026 Passport found the 4Runner less comfortable. That is an evaluator’s result from a cross-model-year comparison, not a promise that every driver will reach the same conclusion, but it is a meaningful warning for commuters who will spend far more time on pavement than on trails.
Who should buy it?
- Drivers who make frequent off-road travel the priority.
- Owners who need a higher tow ceiling than the Outback offers and can work within the exact 4Runner powertrain’s rating.
- Buyers prepared to compare grades for traction and underbody equipment instead of treating the model name as a complete specification.
2026 Honda Passport: the comfort-and-capability compromise
Where it fits best
The Passport is the middle-ground choice. Edmunds describes it as suitable for dirt roads and less severe trails, while finding it smoother over bumps and more car-like than the 4Runner. That combination makes it attractive when a vehicle must handle commuting, passengers and long paved trips every week but still reach campsites, trailheads and maintained backcountry roads.
It is not the evidence-supported choice for regular severe off-roading in this group. If your route routinely includes deep ruts, difficult rock sections or conditions where suspension articulation and specialized traction hardware are decisive, the 4Runner’s off-road-oriented grades have the stronger case.
Towing requirement and equipment
The Honda-hosted comparison lists a 5,000-pound maximum tow rating for the Passport. Honda also states that towing requires accessory equipment. Ask the dealer to identify every required accessory and the applicable limits for the exact configuration; do not assume that a receiver installed after purchase, wiring, cooling equipment or trailer-brake provisions are interchangeable across vehicles.

Honda’s comparison pages are official manufacturer information and state U.S. applicability. Because Honda has a commercial interest, use the figures as a starting specification and reconcile them with the vehicle’s own manual, certification label and payload information.
Who should buy it?
- Drivers whose normal use is paved commuting with occasional dirt roads or lighter trails.
- Families who value the ride comfort and car-like behavior Edmunds reported.
- Owners whose loaded trailer fits within the 5,000-pound maximum after accounting for passengers, cargo and required towing equipment.
2026 Subaru Outback: everyday AWD with moderate trail ability
Why it remains a candidate
The Outback occupies a different niche from the 4Runner. Subaru describes standard all-wheel drive, up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance and roomy comfort on its 2026 page. An Associated Press roundup of Edmunds evaluations describes the 2026 Outback as capable in moderately challenging off-road situations. That makes it a sensible choice for drivers who encounter snow, gravel, forest roads and occasional rough sections but do not need a dedicated trail-focused SUV.
Subaru identifies the Wilderness grade as the off-road-upgraded version. Treat that as a trim-level distinction: the presence of all-wheel drive on every Outback does not mean every grade has identical clearance, suspension tuning or protective equipment.

The cited Honda comparison lists 2,700 pounds for the 2.5L Outback and 3,500 pounds for the 2.4T. Subaru’s own 2026 page also gives a maximum of up to 3,500 pounds. If your trailer is near either limit, start with the engine, then check the exact trim’s payload, hitch requirements and the loaded trailer’s tongue weight.

Who should buy it?
- Drivers who want an everyday vehicle with standard all-wheel drive and substantial stated ground clearance.
- Buyers whose routes are moderate rather than consistently technical.
- Owners towing smaller loads that remain comfortably below the powertrain-specific limit.
Choose by route difficulty, not by badge
Mostly pavement, gravel and maintained access roads
The Passport and Outback are the most natural fits for this use. Choose between them by trailer requirement and drivetrain preference: the Passport has the higher quoted tow ceiling, while the Outback supplies standard all-wheel drive and Subaru’s stated clearance advantage. Neither statement replaces a trim-level inspection.
Moderate trails, snow and rough forest roads
The Outback becomes more compelling when standard all-wheel drive, clearance and daily comfort are central. The Passport remains appropriate when the route is occasional and relatively mild, especially if its ride quality is more important to you than specialized trail equipment.
Frequent trails with ruts, loose surfaces or technical sections
Start with the 4Runner, then compare SR5, TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter and TRD Pro equipment. The research supports a capability increase across those off-road-oriented grades, but it does not establish a complete geometry or payload ranking among them. Verify the configuration against the route and trailer rather than assuming the most expensive grade is automatically correct.

- Weigh the trailer as loaded. Include water, fuel, batteries, equipment and anything added for a trip.
- Identify the exact SUV powertrain and grade. The quoted limits change between 4Runner powertrains and between the Outback’s engines.
- Check the vehicle’s payload label. Passengers, luggage, hitch hardware and trailer tongue weight all consume payload; a tow rating alone cannot prove the combination is acceptable.
- Confirm required equipment. Honda specifically says Passport towing requires accessory equipment. Obtain the approved hitch, wiring and any other required items for that configuration.
- Compare the trailer’s loaded weight with the lower applicable limit. Use the vehicle manual, certification label and current manufacturer towing guide, not a generic model-level statement.
- Plan a margin. A setup that barely meets a maximum leaves less room for passengers, cargo, elevation, weather and real-world variation.
If a dealer cannot show the applicable rating and equipment for the vehicle identification number or exact build, pause the purchase and obtain the documentation first.

Daily-driving factors that change the decision
Ride and steering feel
The only direct ride comparison in the supplied evaluations favors the Passport over the 4Runner: Edmunds reports smoother bump absorption and a more car-like feel. Use that finding as a directional distinction, not as a universal score for every trim or road.
Cabin and practical comfort
Subaru describes the Outback as roomy and comfortable for everyday use. The available material does not provide comparable cargo measurements, seating dimensions or noise tests for all three vehicles, so a buyer who regularly carries people or bulky gear should sit in the exact trim and measure the cargo area personally.
Ground clearance versus actual trail performance
The Outback’s “up to 9.5 inches” is a useful specification, but clearance is only one part of trail ability. Tire choice, suspension movement, traction control, wheelbase, approach and departure geometry and underbody protection also affect whether a vehicle can clear an obstacle. The sources do not establish a complete, comparable geometry table, so no model should be ranked on clearance alone.
Evidence, dates and limits behind this guide
The Passport-versus-4Runner evaluation published by the Associated Press on September 3, 2025, republishes Edmunds’ work and compares a 2025 4Runner with the redesigned 2026 Passport. It is therefore not a same-model-year instrumented test. The broader AP/Edmunds roundup covers 2026 models and discusses the Outback and Passport in a midsize-SUV context.
The towing figures come primarily from Honda Information Center comparison pages. Those pages state U.S. applicability and are manufacturer material, so they should be checked against the exact vehicle’s manual and certification label. Subaru’s clearance and towing statements come from Subaru of America’s 2026 Outback information. No independent study statistic is needed to make the category recommendation.
Comparable fuel economy, maintenance expense, insurance cost, complete payload data across trims, detailed approach and departure angles and controlled real-world towing results are not established by these sources. Do not infer those rankings from the recommendations above.
Quick Recap
A purchase checklist
- Write down the hardest route you will actually drive and how often it occurs.
- Record the trailer’s loaded weight and estimated tongue weight.
- Choose the engine or hybrid before comparing tow limits.
- Inspect the exact trim’s drivetrain, traction aids, clearance and underbody protection.
- Ask for the required hitch and wiring equipment, particularly for the Passport.
- Read the vehicle manual and towing guide for the specific configuration.
- Check the door-jamb payload label with passengers and cargo included in your calculation.
- Test-drive the vehicle on the roads that dominate your week, not only on a short dealer route.
- For a 4Runner, compare SR5 with TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter and TRD Pro based on the route rather than appearance.
- For an Outback, compare the engine and Wilderness grade if moderate trail use is central.
Bottom-line decision framework
