The most reliable way to clean household windows is a two-tool setup: a dedicated glass microfiber cloth and a hand squeegee with an intact rubber blade. Use the cloth to remove dry dust, spread cleaner, detail edges and buff small marks; use the squeegee to remove the main film of liquid in smooth, overlapping strokes. This division of work is more controllable than trying to finish every pane with a cloth alone.
No independent, dated head-to-head test establishes one universally best brand or current price. The useful buying decision is therefore about weave, lint control, washable construction, blade condition and technique. The Kärcher Premium MF Cloth Shine is a clearly specified glass-cloth example, while professional systems from Unger illustrate how cloths, squeegees and frame-cleaning tools can be combined for larger jobs.
Quick answer: what to buy
For most homes, buy one glass-specific microfiber cloth for preparation and finishing, plus a hand squeegee fitted with a sound rubber blade. Keep a second clean cloth available for frames, sills and the final edge pass. A squeegee does the fast liquid removal; the microfiber cloth handles the jobs that a rubber blade cannot reach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose the cloth: look for a glass or smooth-surface designation, low-lint construction and washing instructions you can follow.
- Choose the squeegee: the blade should be straight, flexible and free of nicks. A damaged edge leaves water behind regardless of the cleaner used.
- Use both in sequence: dust first, apply cleaner to a manageable section, squeegee while the surface is wet, then detail the perimeter with a clean cloth.
This approach follows the workflows described by Screwfix and Simple Green: pull the blade in smooth overlapping strokes, keep it in contact with the glass and wipe it after each pass.

What makes a microfiber cloth suitable for glass?
Glass-specific weave and lint control
Window glass shows stray fibers and residue more readily than many household surfaces. A cloth marketed specifically for glass, windows or mirrors is therefore a safer starting point than a general-purpose cloth whose pile may shed or spread polish. Kärcher describes its Premium MF Cloth Shine as intended for glass, windows, mirrors and chrome, with streak-free and lint-free positioning.
“Microfiber” alone is not a performance guarantee. The useful questions are whether the manufacturer identifies smooth-surface use, whether the cloth can be washed and reused, and whether the care instructions preserve its absorbency and low-lint behavior. Avoid using a cloth that has been exposed to fabric softener, oily cleaners or heavy workshop dirt on a final glass pass; those residues can be transferred to the pane.
A documented example: Kärcher Premium MF Cloth Shine
| Specification | Published detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Intended surfaces | Glass, windows, mirrors and chrome | Signals a smooth-surface, low-lint role rather than an all-purpose scrubbing role. |
| Cloth dimensions | 400 × 400 mm | Large enough to fold into clean working faces while still being manageable by hand. |
| Pack size | Five cloths | Allows separate cloths for initial dusting, cleaner application, edge work and final buffing. |
| Material | 85% PET / 15% PA | Provides a stated fibre composition for buyers comparing construction. |
| Washing guidance | Up to 60 °C | Follow the maker’s temperature limit rather than assuming hotter is better. |
| Expected reuse | Approximately 500 wash cycles when care instructions are followed | This is a manufacturer-stated estimate, not an independently verified life test. |
Kärcher also warns that high dryer temperatures can shorten service life. Air-dry the cloths or use a temperature that stays within the manufacturer’s guidance.
How many cloths do you need?
One cloth can clean a pane, but a small set makes the workflow more reliable. Keep one cloth for dry dust and loose grit, one for spreading solution, one for frames and sills, and one completely clean cloth for edge detailing or a final mark removal. Folding a 400 × 400 mm cloth into quarters gives several clean faces; refold instead of rubbing a dirty face back over the glass.
What to look for in a window squeegee
Blade condition matters more than decoration
A squeegee removes the liquid film only where the rubber edge maintains continuous contact. Select a model with a straight, flexible blade and inspect it before each job. Replace or turn the blade when it develops nicks, splits, a permanently bent section or a rough edge. A poor blade can create parallel trails that look like a cleaning-chemical problem.

- STURDY & COST-EFFECITVE: – Size 12" x 12", high capacity, economical 12 Pack. These cloth wipes for windows are an efficient substitute for the typical spray-and-wipe method. Just wet the cloth and amazingly one wipe can tackle all residue and grim, reducing the need for paper towels, cleaning solutions, or chemical cleaners. The high-quality texture ensures 1200 times the Machine Wash Cycle under normal conditions. Sturdy enough while not losing their shape or effectiveness.
The evidence does not establish one universally superior brand, handle length or channel width. Match the tool to the pane size you can control: a smaller hand tool is easier to steer on divided panes, while a wider channel can cover a large picture window in fewer passes if you can keep the blade flat and in contact.
Technique is part of the specification
Screwfix recommends pulling from the top in smooth, overlapping strokes and wiping the blade after each pass. Simple Green gives a pane-size variation: use vertical strokes on small panes and horizontal strokes on larger picture windows. Its instruction is explicit that the blade should remain in contact with the window to avoid missed spots.

Cloth versus squeegee: which tool does each job?
| Task | Microfiber cloth | Squeegee |
|---|---|---|
| Remove loose dust before wet cleaning | Yes. Use a dry, clean face. | No. Dragging a wet blade through grit can spread it. |
| Spread a small amount of cleaner | Yes, especially around edges and divided panes. | Not its purpose. |
| Remove the main liquid film | Possible, but consumes cloth faces and can leave lint or smears. | Yes. This is the fastest, most consistent role. |
| Clean corners, muntins and perimeter seals | Yes. Fold the cloth to make a narrow edge. | Limited; the rubber channel may not reach tight corners. |
| Final isolated mark or drip | Yes, with a clean, dry face. | Only if the mark is within the blade path. |
| Frames, ledges and sills | Yes, using a cloth reserved for those surfaces. | Only where its shape and surface permit; professional systems may include separate tools. |
How to clean glass windows without streaks
1. Assemble clean tools
Use a glass-suitable microfiber cloth, a squeegee with an undamaged rubber blade, a bucket or container for the chosen solution and a dry cloth for edge work. Separate the cloth intended for glass from one used on dirty frames or sills. A dirty cloth can reintroduce grit and oily residue after the pane appears clean.
2. Work in manageable sections
Simple Green advises working in sections small enough that the solution does not dry on the surface. On a large window, divide the glass mentally into bands or panes. Complete one section through the squeegee pass before wetting the next. Drying cleaner is a common cause of extra wiping and uneven marks.

3. Remove loose dust
Use a dry microfiber face to lift dust from the glass and the immediate perimeter. Do not begin by saturating a dusty pane: loose particles can be dragged across the surface and soil the cloth or blade. Shake out or refold the cloth when its working face becomes visibly dirty.

4. Apply cleaner sparingly
Dampen the working section rather than flooding the entire window. Simple Green’s PRO Glass Cleaner is described as ammonia-free and bleach-free; follow the label directions for that product or the cleaner you have selected. The important control is keeping the surface wet only long enough to squeegee it, not allowing a film to dry.
5. Squeegee with continuous contact
Start at the top of the wet section. Pull the blade in a smooth stroke with moderate, even pressure. Overlap the next stroke slightly so no dry strip remains between passes. Keep the rubber edge touching the glass from the beginning to the end of each pull.
- Small panes: use vertical strokes when that lets you keep the channel flat and clear of muntins.
- Large picture windows: use horizontal strokes if you can maintain a straight, continuous path.
- After every pass: wipe the blade with a clean part of the cloth before returning to the glass.
6. Detail edges and corners
After the main liquid has been removed, use a clean, nearly dry microfiber face around the perimeter, in corners and along muntins. Fold the cloth to create a narrow edge rather than bunching it into a thick pad. If the cloth becomes wet or dirty, change to a fresh face; repeatedly polishing with the same loaded face spreads residue.
7. Inspect at an angle
View the pane from several angles and from both sides when possible. Isolated droplets or missed strips can be removed with the cloth. If you see repeated parallel lines across the full section, inspect the blade for dirt or damage and repeat the squeegee pass with a clean edge rather than adding more cleaner.

Technique for different window layouts
Divided-light and small panes
Small panes have more edges relative to their area. Apply solution to one pane at a time, use vertical blade strokes when practical, and finish each corner with a folded cloth. Wiping the blade between passes is especially important because a small amount of residue can be deposited along the next narrow strip.
Large picture windows
Large panes reward a planned stroke direction. Horizontal pulls can reduce the number of turns, provided the channel stays level and fully engaged with the glass. Break the window into manageable sections so the far side does not dry while you are working near the other edge.
Frames, ledges and sills
Keep a separate cloth for these areas. Professional systems documented by Unger combine microfiber cloths with tools intended for windows, ledges, frames and sills; that separation helps prevent frame grime from reaching the final glass pass.

Wash within the stated limits
For the Kärcher example, the stated wash limit is up to 60 °C. Do not raise the temperature in the hope of making a cloth cleaner unless the manufacturer permits it. Use the detergent guidance supplied with the cloth, rinse thoroughly and keep glass cloths away from loads that contain grease, wax or fabric softener.

High dryer temperatures can shorten the cloth’s service life, according to Kärcher. Use a lower-temperature setting or air-dry. Store the cloths clean and dry so they are ready for the next pane.

Retire a cloth from glass duty when necessary
Move a cloth to frame or general cleaning when it remains visibly stained, has picked up grit or leaves lint after correct washing. The goal is not to maximize the number of uses at the expense of the final glass finish. The approximately 500-cycle figure for the Kärcher cloth is conditional on following its care instructions and should not be treated as a guarantee for every household washing routine.
Cleaner handling and common causes of streaks
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Parallel lines after each pull | Dirty, nicked or bent blade; blade not wiped between passes. | Clean the rubber edge, inspect it under good light and replace it if damaged. Wipe after every stroke. |
| Thin dry strips between strokes | Passes did not overlap or the blade lost contact. | Overlap the next pull slightly and keep the channel continuously against the glass. |
| Cloudy patches that appear while working | Cleaner dried before the section was finished. | Use smaller sections and remove the liquid before it dries. |
| Lint around edges | Cloth is not intended for glass, is worn, or is carrying laundry residue. | Switch to a clean glass-specific cloth face and follow the washing and drying guidance. |
| Smears remain after repeated buffing | The cloth face is loaded with residue or the pane was over-wetted. | Change to a clean face, use less solution and squeegee the section while wet. |
| Marks only on one type of pane | Glass coating or contamination may react differently; the available evidence does not guarantee identical results on every surface. | Test the cleaner and method on an inconspicuous area and follow the glass or coating manufacturer’s instructions. |
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the surface claim. Prefer wording that names glass, windows, mirrors or other smooth surfaces.
- Check lint and care information. A washable cloth with a stated temperature and drying method is easier to maintain than an unspecified textile.
- Buy enough clean faces. A five-cloth pack such as Kärcher’s gives more separation between dusting, wet work and final detailing.
- Inspect the squeegee blade before purchase and use. Reject a blade that is visibly nicked, wavy or permanently deformed.
- Match the channel to your panes. Choose a size you can keep flat and in contact with the entire stroke.
- Plan the workflow, not just the products. The cloth and squeegee should work as a sequence: dust, wet a manageable section, squeegee, wipe the blade, then detail.
When a professional system is worthwhile
For occasional household cleaning, a dedicated cloth and hand squeegee are usually sufficient. A coordinated professional system becomes more useful when you clean many panes, multiple buildings or windows with substantial frame and sill work. Unger documents microfiber cloths alongside related glass-cleaning tools for windows, ledges, frames and sills, while Kärcher documents cloth-and-squeegee workflows for smooth surfaces.
The benefit is organization and compatibility rather than a guaranteed streak-free result. You still need a clean blade, controlled sections and a cloth reserved for final glass work. More components do not compensate for a blade that has lost contact or a solution that dries on the pane.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited manufacturer and cleaning-procedure information supports a clear selection method: choose a low-lint, reusable cloth intended for glass; choose a squeegee with a sound rubber blade; and use overlapping, contact-preserving strokes while the solution remains wet. It does not establish a single best brand, current retail price or ranking across all windows.
Results can vary with the glass surface, coatings, soil type, weather and operator technique. Treat streak-free and lint-free descriptions as product positioning, not an unconditional guarantee. The most defensible recommendation is the two-tool workflow, maintained according to each manufacturer’s instructions.
Recommended setup
For a normal household, start with a pack of glass-specific microfiber cloths such as the documented 400 × 400 mm, five-cloth Kärcher Premium MF Cloth Shine configuration, and a hand squeegee whose rubber blade is straight and undamaged. Reserve one cloth for frames and sills, keep one clean face for final edges, and replace or maintain the blade as soon as it leaves trails. Clean one manageable section at a time, wipe the blade after every pass and never let the solution dry on the glass.
