There is no single best replacement for MEGA. Sync.com is the strongest fit in the cited comparison for zero-knowledge storage and secure sharing; Proton Drive suits people already using Proton’s privacy services; pCloud is aimed at flexible personal storage and media libraries; and Tresorit is designed around controlled business file exchange. Internxt, Icedrive, and Filen are additional privacy-oriented candidates, each with narrower trade-offs.
This is a research-based comparison, not a first-hand speed, sync-reliability, usability, or recovery test. Prices, storage allowances, encryption features, country availability, and promotions change, so confirm live provider terms before subscribing.
What makes a good MEGA alternative?
Switching cloud storage is not just a question of how many gigabytes you receive. The important difference is who can decrypt your files, how links are controlled, whether colleagues can work in the same documents, how an administrator can manage a team, and whether the service fits the software you already use.

Privacy and encryption
“Encrypted” is not a complete privacy description. Compare which data is encrypted, where keys are held, whether client-side or zero-knowledge encryption covers the whole account or only an optional vault, and what happens if you lose a recovery credential. The cited comparison highlights Sync.com and Proton Drive for privacy-oriented storage and treats pCloud’s stronger client-side encryption as an optional paid feature. Those are source characterizations, not an independent audit of any implementation.

Sharing and access control
A link for a family photo is different from a confidential client-file exchange. Look for password protection, expiry controls, download restrictions, permission levels, activity visibility, and a way to revoke access. Business users should also check whether administrators can remove accounts, transfer ownership, and apply policies without taking possession of employees’ personal files.
Collaboration and ecosystem fit
Standalone storage can be the right choice when privacy and file custody come first. An ecosystem service may be better when editing documents, calendars, email, identity management, or desktop productivity are central to the workflow. Google Drive and OneDrive are commonly considered for their integrations; the cited sources describe Google Drive’s broad integrations and OneDrive’s Microsoft 365 connection. Verify current feature details with the provider.
Value, billing, and longevity
Free tiers, recurring subscriptions, business plans, and lifetime offers cannot be compared as if they were the same product. A lifetime plan is an upfront purchase whose value depends on how long the provider remains available and how much storage you actually use. Calculate a break-even point only after checking the current one-time price, included storage, upgrade rules, taxes, and refund terms for your country.
Archives and media
Large photo, video, and document archives need predictable organization, desktop access, selective sync, and a practical way to retrieve many files at once. The comparison positions pCloud and Icedrive toward long-term personal storage or media-oriented use, but those are secondary-source assessments. Confirm current upload limits, preview support, and export behavior before moving an irreplaceable archive.
MEGA alternatives at a glance
The table reflects the cited comparison’s positioning. It deliberately avoids stale prices and storage numbers; none were established as durable, current figures for every service.
| Service | Best fit | Notable direction | Main trade-off to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sync.com | Private storage, sensitive documents, secure sharing, small teams | Zero-knowledge-focused positioning and professional sharing | Less generous free storage than MEGA in the cited comparison; verify current limits and regional plans |
| Proton Drive | People already using Proton services | Privacy tools connected with mail, VPN, password, and calendar products | Collaboration is described as comparatively limited; check editing workflows |
| pCloud | Personal storage, media libraries, long-term plans | Flexible personal use and lifetime-plan availability | Client-side encryption is generally an extra feature; lifetime value depends on assumptions |
| Tresorit | Confidential business exchange and controlled team access | Business-oriented sharing and administration | Higher cost than consumer storage; verify current compliance and plan details |
| Internxt | Privacy-first personal storage | Privacy-oriented positioning | Smaller ecosystem and changing promotional terms |
| Icedrive | Virtual-drive-style access and personal archives | Personal storage and lifetime options | Comparison ranks its privacy positioning below Sync.com or Proton Drive; verify encryption scope |
| Filen | Users willing to evaluate a smaller privacy provider | Privacy-first encrypted-storage positioning | Less mainstream recognition and a smaller ecosystem |
| Google Drive or OneDrive | Productivity-suite collaboration | Deep integration with broader office and identity tools | Privacy and key-management priorities differ from privacy-first services |
| Dropbox, iCloud, or IDrive | Established cross-platform or device-centric workflows | Listed by the ACCC as consumer cloud-storage services; some can operate as standalone sync or backup tools | Confirm current encryption, sharing, and platform support for your exact use |
Detailed alternatives
Sync.com: the privacy-and-sharing candidate
The cited comparison recommends Sync.com when the priority is zero-knowledge storage, secure sharing, sensitive documents, or a small professional team. That makes it a logical MEGA alternative for consultants, agencies, and households that send private files outside their own account.
Its trade-off is value at the entry level: the comparison describes its free storage as less generous than MEGA’s. Do not treat that as a current quota guarantee. Check the live plan page for storage, file-size limits, link controls, user seats, and the countries where each plan is sold.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Before adopting it for client work, test the exact exchange pattern you need: create a restricted folder, invite an external recipient, revoke access, and confirm what the recipient can download or forward. Also document how account recovery works, because stronger client-side privacy can reduce the provider’s ability to restore access when credentials are lost.
Proton Drive: best when you already use Proton
Proton Drive is presented as a natural choice for people who already rely on Proton’s privacy ecosystem, including mail, VPN, password, and calendar services. One account family can reduce the number of vendors and identities your household manages.
The cited comparison also identifies comparatively limited collaboration. If your work depends on simultaneous editing, comments, document history, or office-suite compatibility, map those tasks before moving. Proton Drive may be a good private file locker while a separate collaboration tool remains necessary.
Verify current sharing controls, desktop and mobile behavior, recovery options, and plan availability in your region. Do not assume that privacy positioning means feature parity with mainstream collaborative office suites.

pCloud: flexible personal storage and media libraries
pCloud is positioned toward flexible personal storage, media libraries, and customers interested in lifetime plans. It can appeal to someone who wants a long-lived personal repository rather than a team workspace.
The important qualification is encryption scope. The comparison warns that client-side encryption is typically an extra paid feature, so a standard account and an encrypted vault should not be treated as equivalent privacy models. Confirm which folders receive that protection, how sharing works from them, and what recovery path exists if the encryption credential is forgotten.
Lifetime storage deserves a calculation rather than a slogan. Compare the one-time charge with the recurring plan you would otherwise keep, include taxes and future storage upgrades, and ask how long you realistically expect to use the service. A lifetime offer is not proof of lower total cost or permanent availability.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Tresorit: controlled business file exchange
Tresorit is the business-oriented candidate in the comparison. It is aimed at confidential files, controlled access, professional sharing, and teams that need a more formal exchange process than a personal link.
Its stated trade-off is cost: it is positioned above consumer storage pricing. That may be justified when administrative controls, confidential workflows, and predictable offboarding matter more than maximum personal capacity.
Before describing it as suitable for a regulated industry, verify current compliance documentation, data-location terms, administrator functions, retention controls, audit information, and contract language for your jurisdiction. The comparison does not establish a universal regulatory certification.
Internxt: privacy-first personal storage with a smaller ecosystem
Internxt is included as a privacy-first personal-storage option. It may fit a reader who values that orientation and does not need a large suite of editing, communication, or enterprise integrations.
The cited trade-off is a smaller ecosystem. Check whether your operating systems, mobile devices, sharing recipients, and backup tools are supported before making it the only copy of important data. Promotional pricing shown by review publishers is time-sensitive and should not be treated as an ongoing offer.
Icedrive: virtual-drive access and personal archives
Icedrive is associated with virtual-drive-style access, personal storage, and lifetime options. That profile can suit an individual who wants an archive to appear like another drive rather than a collaboration platform.
The comparison ranks its privacy positioning below Sync.com or Proton Drive. Treat that as a comparative assessment, not a security audit. Confirm the exact encryption scope, whether encrypted areas can be shared, and how files are exported if you later leave.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Filen: a smaller encrypted-storage shortlist candidate
Filen is described as a smaller, privacy-first encrypted-storage service. It belongs on a shortlist when privacy is central and you are comfortable evaluating a less familiar provider.
Its trade-offs are mainstream recognition and ecosystem breadth. Obtain current documentation for recovery, support response, sharing, desktop clients, and data export. Keep an independent backup while you establish confidence in a newer or smaller service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen an ecosystem service is the better MEGA replacement
The ACCC filing lists OneDrive, iCloud, Dropbox, MEGA, pCloud, Sync.com, IDrive, and other services in the consumer cloud-storage market. It notes that Dropbox, pCloud, Sync.com, and IDrive can be adopted as standalone services because they synchronize and back up files across software platforms.
Choose an ecosystem-oriented service when the surrounding tools remove more friction than a standalone privacy feature adds. Google Drive can make sense for organizations already working in Google’s productivity environment. OneDrive can be efficient where Microsoft 365 identity, desktop applications, and administration are already standard. Dropbox, iCloud, or IDrive may fit existing device and backup habits. In every case, compare the provider’s current key-management, sharing, recovery, and export behavior rather than inferring privacy from the ecosystem name.
How to choose among the finalists
- Write down the primary job. Label it private personal storage, client exchange, team collaboration, device backup, or long-term media archive. If you have several jobs, rank them instead of searching for one service to do everything.
- Define the privacy boundary. Decide whether provider-held encryption keys are acceptable, whether you need client-side protection for selected folders, and how much recovery assistance you require.
- Map recipients and devices. List the operating systems, mobile devices, external clients, and colleagues who must open or edit files. A technically private service is not useful if recipients cannot complete the workflow.
- Test administration before migration. For a team, create a trial workspace, invite a second account, remove that account, transfer a file, revoke a link, and verify what remains accessible. Record the exact results for your policy documentation.
- Model the five-year cost. Include recurring fees, taxes, storage upgrades, optional encryption, extra seats, and the possibility that a lifetime offer will not meet future needs. Use live prices for your country and billing period.
- Verify exit options. Confirm that you can download original files, preserve useful metadata, and close the account without losing encrypted content. Do not migrate an archive until you understand the export path.
Migration plan from MEGA
1. Inventory before copying
Separate active work, shared folders, personal records, media, and temporary files. Mark items that require external sharing or special encryption. This prevents a large, disorganized transfer from carrying obsolete permissions into the new service.
2. Preserve an independent source copy
Download or synchronize the MEGA data to a local disk or another independent location before deleting anything. Open representative documents, photos, videos, and archives to confirm that the transfer produced usable files.
3. Create the destination structure first
Build folders, naming rules, ownership assignments, and sharing groups in the new service before uploading. Keep confidential material separate from files intended for public or client access.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
4. Transfer in batches
Move a small, representative batch first. Check filenames, modified dates, folder nesting, previews, and offline behavior on every device. Then continue in manageable groups so a failed upload is easy to identify and repeat.
5. Recreate links deliberately
Old MEGA links are not automatically equivalent to links in another provider. Issue new links, apply passwords or expiry dates where available, send recipients the replacement URLs, and revoke obsolete access only after confirming delivery.
6. Validate recovery
Sign in from a second device, test account-recovery instructions, and confirm that an administrator or trusted successor can access business-critical files under your policy. For client-side encryption, document where recovery credentials are stored without placing them in the same cloud account.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by storage quota alone
A large allowance does not solve weak sharing controls, limited collaboration, or an unusable export process. Score the service against your primary job and your recovery requirements.
Assuming every encrypted folder has the same protection
Optional encrypted vaults, encrypted transfers, encrypted servers, and client-side encryption address different risks. Read the provider’s current explanation of key handling and identify which parts of your account receive each protection.
Using a personal locker for business exchange
Client work may require revocation, ownership transfer, audit information, and offboarding. If those controls are absent, select a business-oriented plan or service instead of relying on a personal link.

Upfront pricing does not remove provider, feature, or capacity risk. Keep an independent copy and verify the terms for upgrades, refunds, account closure, and future access.
Moving the only copy of irreplaceable files
Cloud synchronization is not the same as a complete backup. Maintain at least one independent copy and perform a restore test before treating the migration as finished.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line recommendations by use case
- Private personal files and secure links: Start with Sync.com, then compare Proton Drive if you already use Proton services.
- A privacy ecosystem: Proton Drive is the most natural shortlist choice, provided its collaboration limits fit your work.
- Personal archives or media libraries: Compare pCloud and Icedrive, paying close attention to encryption scope, export, and lifetime-plan assumptions.
- Confidential client or team exchange: Evaluate Tresorit and Sync.com for administration and controlled sharing rather than storage quota alone.
