There is no single best materia loadout for every battle in Final Fantasy VII Remake. The strongest starting point is role-based: give Cloud close-range damage with enough durability to stay active, build Tifa for rapid physical pressure and ATB generation, let Barret cover ranged attacks or party support, and use Aerith for magic damage and healing. Then change the setup for the enemy’s weakness, your linked weapon or armor slots, and the demands of the next encounter.
The recommendations below are flexible templates rather than mathematically proven builds. Materia availability, weapon and armor slots, party composition, and the fact that one equipped materia cannot be used by another character at the same time all affect the final choice.

How materia, roles, and linked slots determine a good build
Materia grants spells, abilities, and summons when you equip it in weapon or armor slots. Magic materia develops through use, so a spell you keep equipped over several chapters can become more useful than one you repeatedly remove. The official overview explains the basic system and the party’s combat roles in PlayStation’s Final Fantasy VII Remake feature.

Cloud is a close-range swordsman, Tifa fights with fast martial-arts attacks, Barret uses a gun-arm from a distance, and Aerith combines ranged attacks with a magic-focused role. Those identities are the foundation for the builds in this guide; they are not rigid class restrictions.

Linked slots are especially important. An Elemental materia paired with a spell materia can transfer an elemental affinity to weapon attacks, or provide elemental resistance when the pair is placed in armor. The two slots must be visibly linked, and the placement changes the result. A pairing in unlinked slots will not produce the intended effect.
Because an elemental effect can help or hurt depending on the target, use Assess before committing to a damage element. Assess reveals vulnerabilities and resistances, allowing you to match a spell or Elemental pairing to the actual enemy instead of guessing.
Role priorities at a glance

| Aerith | Magic damage and primary healing | Magic Up, MP Up, HP Up, healing, and elemental coverage |
Prepare the party before choosing individual materia
A strong build starts with the encounter rather than a permanent character sheet. Use this sequence whenever the party reaches a boss, a difficult group, or a new area.
- Assess the target. Check the enemy’s weakness, resistance, and other information before selecting an elemental attack.
- Inventory the available materia. A template can only use materia you have obtained, and equipping one copy removes it from the pool available to other active characters.
- Inspect weapon and armor slots. Confirm that the required pair is linked and decide whether the effect belongs on a weapon for offensive affinity or on armor for resistance.
- Decide what the fight actually needs. A boss may reward healing, defense, recovery, or ATB utility more than one additional damage option. Exploration can tolerate a more aggressive setup.
- Leave room for party coverage. At least one character should be able to restore health, and demanding encounters often justify a second recovery or defensive option.
During combat, the game lets you switch between available party members. That means the best loadout is not only the one with the highest theoretical damage; it is the one that gives you a useful answer when the enemy changes behavior or a controlled character is pressured.
Cloud materia setup: close-range damage with staying power
Cloud’s baseline should make it easy to remain in melee range without sacrificing every slot to offense. His sword-based style naturally favors direct physical pressure, while an elemental pairing can add value when the enemy’s weakness and your equipment cooperate.
Recommended starting priorities
- One elemental plan when justified: Pair Elemental with the spell that Assess identifies as useful against the encounter. Put the pair in linked weapon slots to add offensive affinity, or in linked armor slots when resistance is more valuable.
- Durability or utility: Reserve space for a defensive or recovery option if Cloud is expected to absorb pressure while other characters cast or heal.
- Enough general damage to remain effective: Do not force an elemental setup against an enemy that resists it. A neutral physical approach is safer than empowering the wrong element.
How to adapt Cloud for different fights
For ordinary groups, Cloud can carry the party’s straightforward close-range damage while another member handles healing. Against a vulnerable boss, the linked Elemental pairing becomes a high-value slot because every suitable weapon attack benefits from the affinity. If the target resists that element, remove or move the pairing rather than treating it as a permanent upgrade.
For a difficult encounter, trade a second damage choice for durability, healing access, or another utility effect if Cloud is the character you control most often. The goal is uninterrupted pressure: a slightly smaller damage ceiling is worthwhile when it prevents repeated interruptions or emergency retreats.

- Putting Elemental and a spell in unlinked slots and expecting an effect.
- Leaving an elemental weapon pairing equipped after Assess shows resistance.
- Giving Cloud every offensive option while no other party member has reliable healing or recovery.
Tifa materia setup: fast physical pressure and ATB momentum
Tifa’s martial-arts style rewards a build that keeps her acting frequently. Her best contribution is often sustained physical pressure rather than a slow, spell-heavy rotation.

Recommended starting priorities
- First Strike: Useful when an immediate opening action helps Tifa establish pressure.
- ATB Assist: Consider it when you are rotating commands among party members and want Tifa’s activity to support the wider party rhythm.
- Steadfast Block or Parry: Defensive choices that fit a player who blocks or dodges actively can preserve her time in melee range.
- HP Up: A practical slot when Tifa is taking frequent close-range hits or the encounter punishes mistakes.
These options are discussed in the current role guide, but none is mandatory. First Strike has less value if your plan begins with a different character, while Parry is only worthwhile when you are comfortable using its timing and positioning.
Adjusting Tifa’s loadout
Use Tifa as the party’s fast physical specialist when the enemy can be pressured safely at close range. If a boss repeatedly punishes melee contact, retain the ATB and survivability tools that let her enter, act, and withdraw instead of filling every slot with damage. When another character already supplies dependable healing, Tifa can devote more capacity to pressure; when recovery is uncertain, HP Up or a defensive option may save more time than another attack.
Tifa does not need to carry the party’s entire elemental plan. Give her an elemental pairing only when the linked slots and the encounter make it clearly useful. Otherwise, keep her setup focused on reliable physical actions and the defenses that let her perform them.

Barret materia setup: ranged damage, support, or both
Barret’s gun-arm lets him contribute while staying away from many close-range threats. That distance creates room for a flexible support build: he can continue attacking, then supply recovery or defensive help when the battle demands it.
Recommended starting priorities
- Ranged damage: Keep a direct offensive option when the encounter rewards constant pressure from a safer position.
- Healing: Useful when Aerith is unavailable, occupied with damage, or when you want a second source of recovery.
- Revival: Consider it for fights where a fallen ally would otherwise force a restart or a long recovery.
- Time or Barrier: Support choices for encounters in which speed control, protection, or mitigation matters more than another attack.
- Steadfast Block, HP Up, or MP Up: Defensive and resource options that make sense when Barret is expected to stay active as a support anchor.
The secondary build guide specifically discusses Healing, Revival, Time, Barrier, Steadfast Block, HP Up, and MP Up as support or durability considerations. Treat that list as a menu, not a requirement to equip all of them at once.
Choosing Barret’s job for the encounter
For exploration, ranged damage plus one recovery option is a dependable compromise. For a boss with frequent area pressure, Barret can remain at range and use Healing or Barrier while Cloud and Tifa create openings. If Aerith already has the party’s healing covered and the boss is vulnerable to a particular element, Barret can instead retain offensive or elemental coverage.
Do not assume that distance makes Barret invulnerable. If the encounter regularly reaches him, HP Up or Steadfast Block can prevent the support plan from collapsing. Conversely, if MP is not being spent on support, MP Up may be less valuable than a direct defensive or damage choice.

Aerith is the natural center of a magic-oriented party plan. Her setup should preserve access to healing while giving her enough magical strength and MP to contribute damage when recovery is not immediately required.
Rank #3
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can Switch between two game modes:- "graphics mode" Prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics & - "performance mode" Prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable "Photo mode"
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the dual sense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Recommended starting priorities
- Healing: Keep reliable recovery available unless another character is intentionally assigned that responsibility for the entire fight.
- Magic Up: A logical damage-support choice for a character whose role emphasizes spells.
- MP Up: Valuable when a long encounter will require repeated healing and offensive casting.
- HP Up: A safety choice because losing the primary healer can leave the party without recovery.
- Elemental coverage: Match a spell or linked Elemental pairing to the weakness revealed by Assess, and remove it when the target resists that element.
Aerith’s offensive magic should not displace every defensive or recovery option. In a short fight against a clear elemental weakness, more damage can end the battle quickly; in a prolonged boss encounter, MP and survivability are part of her damage plan because they keep her casting and healing later.
Managing Aerith in a demanding battle
Give Aerith enough MP for the fight’s expected length rather than spending it all on early damage. If Barret carries a second Healing or Revival option, Aerith can take a more aggressive elemental arrangement. If she is the only dependable healer, HP Up and MP Up may be more valuable than a marginal extra attack choice.
Her elemental setup should also respect slot linkage. A spell in an unlinked pair does not gain the weapon or armor affinity you intended, and a resistant target can turn an apparently strong choice into wasted actions.
Elemental pairings: weapon offense versus armor resistance
Elemental is most useful when you deliberately choose where the linked pair goes.
Use a weapon pairing for a weakness
Place Elemental and the matching spell in linked weapon slots when Assess identifies that element as a vulnerability. The pairing can give the character’s attacks an elemental affinity, allowing a close-range attacker such as Cloud or a suitable ranged attacker to pressure the weakness without repeatedly selecting a spell command.
Use an armor pairing for protection
Place the same kind of linked pair in armor when the encounter repeatedly uses an element that threatens the party. The result is defensive elemental resistance rather than an offensive weapon effect. Verify the slot linkage and the exact placement before entering the fight.
When not to use Elemental
- The enemy resists the element shown by Assess.
- Your weapon or armor has no linked slots available for the pair.
- The party needs healing, Revival, Barrier, or another defensive answer more urgently.
- You are unsure whether the fight will expose the equipped character to the relevant element.
Elemental is therefore an encounter tool, not a permanent “best” materia. Reassign it when the target, equipment, or party role changes.
Builds for exploration, bosses, and hard mode
Exploration and mixed enemy groups
Use flexible coverage rather than a narrow specialist setup. Keep one dependable healer, at least one character who can recover a fallen ally when the area is dangerous, and enough direct damage to avoid spending MP on every minor encounter. A neutral physical option is useful when enemy weaknesses vary or are not yet known.

Boss encounters
Assess the boss before committing to an element, then check whether the required linked slots are on the weapon or armor you plan to use. Preserve party recovery even when the weakness appears tempting. A boss can outlast an early burst, and losing the only healer can invalidate an otherwise strong damage plan.
Hard mode
Hard-mode planning places more weight on Healing, Prayer, Revival, Barrier, HP Up, MP Up, and defensive or ATB options than on simply adding another damage materia. The hard-mode guidance in GameWith’s FF7 Remake materia and builds guide treats these as considerations rather than universal requirements. Choose the defensive package that matches the fight and the character you control most often.
Resource management matters as much as the listed role. If a character spends MP on support early, another party member may need to carry recovery later. Recheck the entire party after changing one person’s loadout instead of evaluating each character in isolation.

“My elemental attacks are doing little or no damage.”
Use Assess again and confirm that the enemy is not resistant to the selected element. Then inspect the weapon or armor screen to verify that Elemental and the spell occupy linked slots. If either condition fails, remove the pairing or move it to a better-supported piece of equipment.
“The character I need has the materia I want.”
Materia is shared inventory, but one equipped copy can only serve one character at a time. Open each active character’s equipment screen, decide which role benefits most, and replace duplicate damage options with party coverage where necessary.
“The party dies after the healer is interrupted.”
Add a second recovery route through Barret or another suitable character, increase survivability with HP Up or a defensive option, and avoid placing every support responsibility on Aerith. In a long fight, preserving a backup is often more valuable than adding another elemental spell.
“Tifa or Cloud cannot stay in melee range.”
Replace one damage slot with a defensive or ATB utility option that fits your play style. Barret can maintain pressure from range while the melee character waits for a safer opening. Reconsider the setup when the enemy group or boss phase changes.
“I copied a recommended build, but my equipment does not match.”
Templates depend on progression, materia inventory, and available weapon and armor slots. Use the role and decision rules rather than forcing a named materia into an incompatible slot. A simpler build that works with your current equipment is better than an unavailable or unlinked combination.
Final selection checklist
- Have you used Assess on the important target?
- Does the chosen element exploit a weakness rather than a resistance?
- Are Elemental and the spell in linked slots?
- Is the pair on a weapon for offense or armor for resistance as intended?
- Who is responsible for Healing and, when needed, Revival?
- Does the party have enough HP, MP, defense, and ATB support for the encounter?
- Will the character’s role remain useful if you switch control during combat?
- Did a change in weapon, armor, party composition, or encounter invalidate the previous setup?
The role-based approach is also consistent with the current setup guidance from iTechGuides’ character materia guide, which emphasizes that no universal weapon-and-materia combination is best for every situation.
The Bottom Line
Start with Cloud as a durable melee attacker, Tifa as a fast physical pressure character, Barret as ranged damage or support, and Aerith as the magic-and-healing specialist. Use Assess, respect linked-slot placement, and reassign materia whenever the enemy, equipment, or party’s recovery needs change.
