For more direct control in Mario Kart World online races, start with Smart Steering off and Auto-Use Items off. Set Auto-Accelerate according to whether you want to hold the accelerator yourself. These are practical starting points based on what the assists do—not settings proven to produce faster times or more wins. Nintendo does not identify a universally best competitive configuration or publish a comparison of online results by assist setting.

The useful question is not simply which options are “best,” but which trade-offs suit the way you want to race: assistance or direct steering, less button holding or manual acceleration, and automatic item use or control over timing. Motion controls are another input preference, not a demonstrated shortcut to stronger online results. Use the recommendations below as a way to choose and adjust your setup, rather than as a guaranteed competitive preset.

Recommended starting settings

The settings answer three separate questions: how much steering help you want, whether you want to hold the acceleration button, and whether you want to choose when to use items. Nintendo’s descriptions explain what each assist does; the recommendations below apply those effects to a player seeking direct control in online races.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting Starting choice What the choice means
Smart Steering Off Choose this when you want to steer without the assist that helps keep the kart from falling off the course.
Auto-Accelerate Your preference Turn it on to accelerate without holding a button during races; leave it off if you prefer to control acceleration manually.
Auto-Use Items Off Keep it off if you want to decide when to use held items rather than having the game use them automatically.
Motion controls Your preference Treat motion steering as another control method, not a demonstrated competitive advantage.

The setting descriptions are documented by Nintendo Support; motion steering is also covered in Nintendo Life’s control-options guide. No reliable comparison establishes that one control method or assist setup performs better online.

  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

This is a recommendation for direct control, not a claim that every online player should use the same configuration. Smart Steering is intended to make it easier to stay on the course, Auto-Accelerate removes the need to hold the accelerator, and Auto-Use Items automates item use. Those descriptions point to clear preference decisions, but they do not establish a speed difference, win-rate change, or ideal combination for every player.

How to open Settings/Controller

You can adjust the settings before starting or while playing. Nintendo documents both routes:

  1. From kart selection: At the kart-selection screen before a race or another mode, press X to open Settings/Controller.
  2. During play: In Single Player, Multiplayer, or Free Roam, press + or – to pause, then press X.

If more than one person is playing on the same system, each player can change these settings for themselves, according to Nintendo’s instructions. That makes it possible for players sharing a console to use different assist preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are preparing for an online race, the kart-selection route gives you a chance to review your choices before starting. If you want to adjust while playing, the documented pause-menu route is available in Single Player, Multiplayer, and Free Roam. The controls are specific: press X at kart selection, or pause with + or – and then press X. If another player shares your system, the settings need not be identical for both of you.

Smart Steering: choose between assistance and direct steering

Nintendo describes Smart Steering as an aid for staying on the course: its support page says to turn it on “to make it easier to drive without falling off the course.” If you want direct steering control, begin with it off. If you value help staying on the track, turning it on is a reasonable choice.

That description does not establish whether Smart Steering makes a player faster or slower in online races. There is no relevant named statistic comparing online outcomes by setting in the sources available here, so claims of a particular speed gain, win-rate change, or competitive disadvantage are not supported. Treat the choice as one about the assistance you want, rather than as a proven performance tweak.

A useful way to decide is to consider what you want the assist to do for you. If avoiding falls and receiving steering help is a priority, its documented purpose makes Smart Steering a reasonable option. If you prefer to make steering decisions without that assistance, start with it off. The recommendation to begin off is an inference for a player seeking direct control, not a Nintendo statement that the setting is inferior or a measured result from online races.

Do not infer more from the word “assist” than Nintendo’s description supports. The official support wording explains its purpose—making it easier to drive without falling off the course—but does not say that the option changes top speed, how other players perform, or how much rating a race awards. If you are comparing your own experience, keep the question narrow: which version feels more manageable to you? That answer can help you choose a preference, but it is not proof of a universal competitive edge.

Auto-Accelerate: a comfort choice, not a speed claim

Auto-Accelerate makes the kart accelerate during races without requiring you to hold a button. Turn it on if you would rather not keep holding the accelerator; leave it off if you prefer to manage acceleration yourself. The documented function is reduced button holding. It is not evidence that the kart accelerates faster or that the setting improves online results.

A community post asks, “Should I turn on my automatic acceleration option in the settings options?” That is one example of how players may phrase the question, not evidence that the concern is widespread or that one answer suits everyone. See the community post.

For a practical choice, ask whether holding the accelerator is something you want to do while racing. If you would rather not hold a button continuously, Auto-Accelerate addresses that preference. If you want to control acceleration manually, leave it off. Neither choice should be presented as a proven way to gain speed: the documented difference is whether you need to hold a button for the kart to accelerate during races.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when you see advice framed as a blanket rule. Someone asking whether to enable “automatic acceleration” may be asking about comfort, hands-on input, or competitive performance. The setting description answers the first two: it automates acceleration and reduces the need to hold the button. It does not settle the third. Choose based on the input style you want, then avoid interpreting comfort as a measured online advantage.

Auto-Use Items: keep timing in your hands

Auto-Use Items uses held items automatically, with timing dependent on the item. Leave it off if choosing when to use an item is part of how you want to race. Turn it on if you prefer the game to handle item use for you. This is a trade-off between automatic use and your control over timing, not a measured advantage for either option.

The setting can also matter in Custom Items rulesets: Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 update notes say Auto-Use Item became usable with Custom Items. The update note establishes availability in those rulesets, not that automatic use is the better choice.

Think of the choice as deciding who handles the timing. With Auto-Use Items off, you retain the decision about when to use a held item. With it on, the game uses held items automatically, and timing depends on the item. If manual timing is important to your approach, the starting recommendation is off. If you prefer automatic use, turning it on is a legitimate preference rather than a mistake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version 1.8.0 is particularly relevant if you play with Custom Items, because Nintendo’s update notes say Auto-Use Item became usable in those rulesets. That is a compatibility or availability detail, not evidence that the setting behaves identically in every possible situation or that automatic timing is optimal. Check the ruleset you are playing before assuming a setting is available or applicable, and keep the preference question separate from the update fact.

Motion controls: use the method you can control

Motion steering is available with supported controller setups, according to Nintendo Life’s overview of the game’s control options. The evidence here does not include a reliable test showing motion controls outperform another method in online races. Choose based on the way you prefer to steer; do not treat motion controls as a documented shortcut to better results.

The phrase “supported controller setups” matters: motion steering is not described here as universally available in every controller configuration. If you want to use it, check the control options for the setup you are using. There is no supported comparison in the material cited here that ranks motion steering against another method, so the sensible decision is whether it is a comfortable way for you to steer—not whether it supposedly guarantees better results.

A practical way to settle your own preferences

These recommendations are starting points, not a universal competitive preset. If you are unsure about an assist, change one setting at a time so you can tell what feels different. For example, leave Auto-Use Items off while trying Auto-Accelerate both on and off. Then, if you want to assess Smart Steering, compare it separately. That process helps you judge comfort and control for yourself; it does not substitute for a controlled test or establish which setup is objectively faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose Smart Steering based on whether you want help staying on the course.
  • Choose Auto-Accelerate based on whether you want to hold the acceleration button.
  • Choose Auto-Use Items based on whether you want to select item timing yourself.
  • Choose motion controls only if that steering method suits you; no online-results comparison is established here.

Changing one option at a time makes it easier to connect a change in how the controls feel with the setting you adjusted. If you change steering assistance, acceleration, item use, and control method all together, you will have less basis for knowing which choice made the setup feel different. This is a practical way to evaluate personal preference, not a formal experiment or proof of a performance effect.

You can use a simple order: first choose whether you want help staying on the course, then choose whether you want to hold the accelerator, and finally choose whether you want automatic item use. Consider motion steering separately as a control method. Keep the other options steady while you evaluate each decision. If a setting feels wrong, you can return to Settings/Controller and change it through the same menu routes described above.

When judging the result, use precise language. You may find that a setting feels more comfortable or gives you the kind of control you prefer. That is a valid personal conclusion. It is different from claiming that it made you faster, raised your rating, or increased your chance of winning. Nintendo’s descriptions establish what the options do, but they do not provide a named online-results comparison or a guaranteed competitive configuration.

Online requirements and version 1.8.0

Nintendo’s update page lists version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026. Nintendo says you must apply the game update to use Internet features, need a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features, and must be on the same game version as other players to play together. Check Nintendo’s update instructions and history if online play is unavailable or players cannot join one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are separate requirements to keep in mind: the game needs its update applied for Internet features, online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and players need the same game version to play together. If you are troubleshooting access or a friend cannot join, checking whether both systems are up to date and on the same version is a sensible first step based on Nintendo’s stated requirements. A membership is required; no membership price or separate purchase cost is specified here.

Version 1.8.0 added courses to VS Race, Time Trials, Online Play, and Wireless Play. Nintendo also says it changed how much ratings fluctuate according to course length, enabled Auto-Use Item with Custom Items, and adjusted item probabilities, among other gameplay changes. Online rules and gameplay details can change with updates, so the version and mode matter when interpreting advice. The update notes do not establish that any assist setting is universally best.

Those patch notes are reasons to pay attention to version and mode, not reasons to treat a particular assist as mandatory. Course additions affect several named modes, rating fluctuation was changed according to course length, Auto-Use Item gained use with Custom Items, and item probabilities were adjusted. These are concrete changes Nintendo lists for version 1.8.0; none supplies a comparison of online outcomes for players with Smart Steering, Auto-Accelerate, or Auto-Use Items enabled or disabled.

If you read an older tip or compare experiences with another player, check whether you are discussing the same version and mode. The current version listed by Nintendo is 1.8.0, dated September 9, 2026. Since Nintendo’s update history can change, confirm the latest entry when revisiting this advice. Do not assume that a course list, ruleset detail, rating behavior, or item setting remains unchanged indefinitely.

Course selection depends on the online format

In the room-race format described by Nintendo, each participant selects a course and the game randomly chooses from those selections. That procedure applies to the documented room format; do not assume it describes every online mode. For instructions on setting up a multiplayer game, see Nintendo’s multiplayer guide.

This distinction helps avoid turning a mode-specific instruction into a general rule. If you are playing the documented room-race format, participants make course selections and the game chooses randomly among them. That does not mean every online race uses that exact process. Check the instructions for the mode or room you are joining before relying on an explanation of course selection.

Version 1.8.0 also added courses to Online Play and other named modes, but that update detail does not replace the room-race instructions or prove that all modes choose courses the same way. Keep course availability and course selection separate: a course may be added to a mode, while the way a particular room selects among courses is a distinct rule.

Settings are only one part of race preparation

Settings cannot replace learning a course. In a TechRadar guide, the author recommends learning rail grinding and wall riding, and says watching world-record ghosts in Time Trials helped identify shortcuts. That is the author’s practice advice—not an official settings recommendation or a controlled test of online performance.

Use that kind of course practice alongside a control setup that feels manageable. Keep separate the two questions: which settings suit your preferred inputs, and which routes or techniques you can execute on a particular course. The available evidence supports practical choices about assists and control, but not a formula for guaranteed wins.

  • Explore the vast world at your own pace in Free Roam mode, discovering hidden surprises and alternate paths.
  • Enhance your racing experience with magnetic Joy-Con 2 Wheel accessories, providing secure and realistic steering control.

The practice advice is specific: TechRadar’s author recommends learning rail grinding and wall riding, and reports that watching world-record ghosts in Time Trials helped identify shortcuts. Treat those as suggestions to practice course techniques and look for routes, not as proof that a particular setting will make those techniques easier or produce a particular finishing position. Settings concern how you steer, accelerate, and use items; course familiarity concerns what you do on a particular route.

That separation also helps keep online advice realistic. A comfortable control setup can remove a source of friction for you, but it does not replace learning the course. Conversely, time spent studying a route does not make a setting universally right for every player. You can work on both without claiming that either one guarantees a result: choose settings by preference, and use practice to learn techniques and possible shortcuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What settings should I use for Mario Kart World online races?

For direct control, start with Smart Steering off and Auto-Use Items off. Choose Auto-Accelerate based on whether you want to hold the accelerator, and use motion steering if it suits your supported controller setup. These are preference-based starting points, not settings Nintendo has established as the fastest or best for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I change Mario Kart World control settings?

At kart selection before a race or another mode, press X to open Settings/Controller. During Single Player, Multiplayer, or Free Roam, pause with + or – and then press X. Nintendo says each player using the same system can change these settings for themselves.

Does Smart Steering make you faster or slower online?

Nintendo describes Smart Steering as making it easier to drive without falling off the course. The cited information does not establish a speed advantage, disadvantage, win-rate change, or rating effect. Choose it based on whether you want that steering assistance.

Should Auto-Accelerate be on?

Turn it on if you prefer the kart to accelerate without holding a button during races. Leave it off if you prefer to manage acceleration manually. The documented distinction is reduced button holding, not a demonstrated performance advantage.

Should I use Auto-Use Items in Custom Items?

Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 notes say Auto-Use Item became usable with Custom Items. Turn it on if you want item use handled automatically; leave it off if you want to choose when to use held items. The update note does not say automatic use is better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do I need to play Mario Kart World online?

Nintendo says to apply the game update to use Internet features, requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features, and requires players to use the same game version to play together. Nintendo lists version 1.8.0 as released September 9, 2026.

How are courses selected in an online room race?

In the room-race format described by Nintendo, each participant selects a course and the game randomly chooses from those selections. That instruction is specific to the documented room format and should not be generalized to every online mode.

The Bottom Line

For direct control, start with Smart Steering and Auto-Use Items off. Decide on Auto-Accelerate based on whether you want to hold the accelerator, and choose motion controls only if they suit your supported controller setup. Change one option at a time and judge comfort rather than assuming a proven speed or win-rate boost. For online play, apply the update, have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and make sure you and the other players are on the same game version.
