For most WordPress sites, Wordfence is the strongest documented all-purpose choice. Its scanner checks files, backdoors, shells, malicious URLs, suspicious content, file changes, public files, password strength, and vulnerable WordPress components. Choose MalCare when cloud scanning and automated cleanup matter most, Sucuri when remote visibility and integrity monitoring are priorities, Jetpack Scan when you want scanning bundled with backups and a WAF, and WPScan as a vulnerability-intelligence companion rather than a malware-removal tool.

What a WordPress malware scanner actually does

A malware scanner looks for evidence that a site has been compromised: injected PHP or JavaScript, backdoors, web shells, malicious redirects, altered core files, suspicious content, and other changes that should not be present. Some scanners also compare files with known-good versions or inspect the HTML that visitors receive.

A vulnerability scanner performs a different job. It identifies software that could be exploited, such as an outdated WordPress version, plugin, or theme. That warning is important, but it does not prove that malware is already installed. A complete security program often uses both kinds of scanning.

  • Malware detection: searches files, database content, generated pages, URLs, and integrity changes for signs of compromise.
  • Vulnerability intelligence: matches installed versions against a database of published security issues.
  • Remediation: removes malicious code, restores clean files, or guides you through repair.
  • Prevention: a firewall, real-time monitoring, backups, and alerting reduce the chance that a new compromise persists.

No scanner can guarantee that a site is clean. Obfuscated code, compromised administrator accounts, database-only injections, and malware hidden outside the normal WordPress tree can evade a single method. Use the results as evidence, then verify the site and its hosting environment.

Wordfence: the broadest documented all-purpose option

What it scans

Wordfence documentation says that a scan examines all files on a WordPress site for malicious code, backdoors, and shells installed by attackers. Its documented checks also cover malicious URLs, suspicious content, unexpected file changes, publicly accessible files, password strength, and vulnerable versions of WordPress core, plugins, and themes. The WordPress.org plugin description lists more than 44,000 known malware variants.

The product page states that Wordfence protects more than 5 million websites. That is a vendor-reported deployment figure, not a measurement of detection performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-tier trade-off

Wordfence Free includes an endpoint firewall and malware scanner. Wordfence states that firewall rules and malware signatures for the free tier are delivered with a 30-day delay. A newly disclosed threat can therefore be recognized later than it would be by a current premium feed. The scanner remains useful for broad file and configuration checks, but high-risk sites should account for that update lag in their risk model.

How to run a Wordfence scan

  1. Install and activate the Wordfence Security plugin from the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Open Wordfence › Scan and review the scan options before starting.
  3. Start the scan and keep the browser session available until the results page reports completion. Large sites can take longer because the checks run across many files.
  4. Open each finding to see the affected path, the reason it was flagged, and the available action. Compare a changed core or plugin file with the official version before deleting or restoring anything.
  5. Use the firewall controls under Wordfence › Firewall and review the activity log for repeated exploit attempts or suspicious administrator activity.

Do not bulk-delete files simply because their names look unfamiliar. Confirm whether a file belongs to an installed plugin, a host control panel, a deployment process, or a legitimate customization. Preserve a backup before making repairs.

MalCare: cloud scanning and automated cleanup

Why its architecture matters

MalCare’s WordPress.org listing describes cloud scanning that uses more than 100 intelligent signals. The analysis is performed through the connected service rather than consuming all scanning resources inside the WordPress request cycle. That design is attractive on shared hosting or on a site where long local scans create noticeable load.

The same listing documents vulnerability alerts, firewall protection, and one-click automated malware removal. Automated cleanup can shorten recovery time, but it should be used only after a current backup is available and the site owner understands what will be changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical MalCare workflow

  1. Install the MalCare plugin and connect the site to the MalCare dashboard.
  2. Start the initial cloud scan and wait for the dashboard to classify the result.
  3. Review the files or indicators identified by the service, paying attention to recently modified files and administrator accounts.
  4. Create or verify a restorable backup before selecting automated removal.
  5. Run the cleanup, then load the public site, log in to the dashboard, and check forms, checkout flows, cron tasks, and third-party integrations.

Cloud scanning does not make a site immune to compromise. The plugin still needs access to the installation, and a stolen hosting or administrator credential can allow reinfection after cleanup. Change credentials and patch the entry point as part of recovery.

Sucuri: remote visibility and file-integrity monitoring

Plugin checks and known-good baselines

Sucuri’s plugin documentation says that, after activation, it automatically scans for known malware, viruses, blacklist status, website errors, outdated software, and malicious code. It also creates a known-good file-integrity baseline. Later comparisons can reveal that a core, plugin, or theme file changed even when the changed content does not match a known signature.

What SiteCheck adds

Sucuri SiteCheck scans as an external visitor. It can identify malicious code visible in the site’s external source code and report core-file integrity problems. Remote inspection is valuable when the WordPress dashboard is unavailable or when you want to see what an ordinary visitor receives.

External visibility has a boundary: code that executes only on the server, a database record that is not rendered on the tested page, or a file outside the web root may not appear in the response. Use the plugin’s local integrity information and hosting logs alongside SiteCheck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Sucuri remove malware?

The documented plugin and SiteCheck functions establish detection, monitoring, and diagnosis. They do not establish that the free plugin automatically removes every infection. Treat removal as a separate service or manual incident-response task, and confirm the scope of any paid cleanup before relying on it.

Jetpack Scan: a bundled security workflow

Jetpack’s Security plan bundles real-time malware scanning with backups, a web application firewall, and one-click fixes. This combination is useful when the same service should provide detection, a rollback point, request filtering, and a repair action instead of assembling separate plugins.

The Jetpack pricing page showed a first-year promotional price of $9.95 per month billed yearly and a regular price of $19.95 per month when accessed in 2026. The promotional amount is time-limited and should not be treated as the permanent renewal price.

When Jetpack Scan is the sensible choice

  • You already use Jetpack backups and want scanning in the same account.
  • You need real-time monitoring rather than a manually scheduled scan.
  • You prefer one-click fixes backed by a recent restore point.
  • You want a WAF managed alongside the scanner.

Before enabling automatic fixes, verify that backups complete successfully and that you know how to restore the previous version. A repair that removes malicious code can also affect a heavily customized plugin or theme if the service cannot distinguish the customization from an injection.

WPScan: vulnerability intelligence, not a malware-cleanup substitute

WPScan’s plugin checks the installed WordPress version and each plugin and theme through API calls, then reports vulnerabilities listed in the WPScan database. The documented default scan interval is daily. These results help you decide what to update or disable before an attacker exploits a known weakness.

A vulnerability report does not prove that malware is present, and a clean vulnerability report does not prove that the site has never been compromised. WPScan should therefore sit beside a malware scanner such as Wordfence, MalCare, Sucuri, or Jetpack Scan.

Using WPScan findings safely

  1. Review the affected component, installed version, severity, and fixed version shown in the alert.
  2. Take a backup and test the update on a staging copy when the site is business-critical.
  3. Update or remove the vulnerable component, then run a malware scan.
  4. Recheck the dashboard after the update for broken layouts, fatal errors, or changed permissions.

How to scan a WordPress site for malware

Prepare before scanning

  • Record the site’s current WordPress, plugin, and theme versions.
  • Create a backup that you can restore independently of the WordPress dashboard.
  • Confirm hosting-panel, SFTP, database, and administrator access in case the dashboard becomes unavailable.
  • Note recent file changes, new administrator accounts, redirects, spam pages, or browser security warnings.
  • Temporarily avoid making unrelated design or plugin changes so that scan findings remain attributable.

Run complementary checks

  1. Run an on-server scan with Wordfence or the scanner already integrated with your security plan.
  2. Run a cloud or remote check with MalCare or Sucuri SiteCheck to obtain a second view of the installation and public output.
  3. Run WPScan’s vulnerability check to identify components that need patching.
  4. Compare the results. A file flagged by multiple methods deserves priority; a single warning still requires inspection rather than automatic deletion.

Check outside WordPress

Review hosting access logs, recently modified files, scheduled tasks, database users, administrator accounts, and outbound email activity. Malware can persist in a hosting account, a server-level configuration, or a stolen credential even after a plugin reports a clean WordPress tree.

How to interpret findings and recover safely

Separate confirmed malware from suspicious changes

A known malicious signature, an injected redirect visible to visitors, or a web shell is a high-confidence finding. An unexpected modification to a core file is serious but should be compared with the official file for the exact WordPress version. A file in a cache, backup, or build directory may be harmless. Read the scanner’s explanation and inspect the path before acting.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contain an active compromise

  • Put the site behind maintenance mode or a WAF rule if visitors are being redirected or served malicious downloads.
  • Reset WordPress administrator, hosting, database, SFTP, and API credentials from a trusted device.
  • Remove unknown administrator accounts and revoke suspicious application passwords.
  • Preserve a copy of logs and the infected files for incident analysis before deleting them.

Clean and verify

  1. Restore altered core files from the official release or a known-clean backup.
  2. Reinstall compromised plugins and themes from trusted packages instead of editing large injected files by hand.
  3. Remove malicious database entries, cron jobs, and unauthorized users.
  4. Patch the vulnerable component that enabled the intrusion.
  5. Run a second scan, clear caches, and inspect the public HTML from a separate network or browser profile.
  6. Monitor file-integrity alerts, login activity, redirects, and server logs for several days after cleanup.

If the attacker had hosting-level access, or if the site repeatedly reinfects after a clean restore, involve the host or a qualified incident-response provider. Repeating the same plugin scan without closing the original access path will not resolve reinfection.

On-server versus cloud and remote scanning

Consideration On-server scan Cloud or remote scan
Visibility Can inspect local files and some database or configuration details Sees connected-site data or the HTML delivered to an external visitor
Resource use Consumes hosting CPU, memory, disk I/O, and PHP/database resources Moves much of the analysis away from the web server
Dashboard availability May be difficult to run if WordPress is broken Can still provide an external view when the public site responds
Blind spots May miss server-level or external delivery problems May miss non-rendered database content and files not exposed to the service
Examples in this guide Wordfence and Sucuri’s plugin integrity checks MalCare cloud scanning and Sucuri SiteCheck

Using both perspectives is more informative than treating architecture as a winner-takes-all choice. The right balance depends on hosting limits, site size, incident history, and whether centralized management matters.

Which scanner fits your situation?

You need one broad, familiar WordPress plugin

Start with Wordfence. It combines an endpoint firewall with a wide documented scan scope and can inspect the installation from inside WordPress. Account for the 30-day delay in free-tier firewall rules and malware signatures when deciding whether the free plan is adequate for a high-risk site.

Your host is resource-constrained or cleanup speed is critical

MalCare is the documented fit for cloud analysis and one-click automated removal. Keep an independent backup and review the proposed cleanup before applying it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to know what visitors can actually see

Use Sucuri SiteCheck for an external perspective and pair it with file-integrity monitoring. Remote results are especially useful when the dashboard is unreliable or search-engine and browser warnings suggest a public-facing infection.

You already pay for backups and a WAF through Jetpack

Jetpack Scan can consolidate real-time scanning, backups, WAF protection, and one-click fixes. Check the promotional versus regular price and renewal terms before committing.

Your priority is patch management

Add WPScan to a malware scanner. Its daily vulnerability checks help you find exploitable versions, but they do not replace file, content, or integrity analysis.

Maintenance schedule that reduces repeat infections

  • Daily: review real-time alerts, new administrator accounts, unexpected redirects, and critical vulnerability notifications.
  • Weekly: confirm backups are restorable, review firewall events, and inspect file-integrity changes.
  • After every update: test the public site, forms, authentication, and payment or publishing workflows.
  • After an incident: rotate credentials, patch the entry point, run independent scans, and monitor logs for reinfection.

Scanning is one control in a layered plan. Least-privilege accounts, timely updates, reliable backups, a WAF where appropriate, and monitoring of hosting access are what turn a scan result into sustained protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose Wordfence for the broadest documented all-purpose scan, MalCare for cloud scanning with automated cleanup, Sucuri for remote visibility and integrity monitoring, Jetpack Scan for a bundled real-time security plan, and WPScan for vulnerability intelligence alongside—not instead of—a malware scanner.
