Use the current-generation version of Mafia III: Definitive Edition. 2K Support says the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions launched on October 8, 2026, with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. The Xbox listing describes its edition as optimized for Series X|S and labels it “60 FPS+.” However, the official information reviewed does not document a selectable Performance or Quality mode, a resolution target, or a list of current-generation graphics sliders. The best-supported approach is therefore to install the correct version, confirm your console and display are outputting a stable 60 Hz signal, and use only the options the live game menu actually shows.
The short answer: which settings should you use?
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, there is no officially documented graphics preset to switch on for Mafia III: Definitive Edition. The current-generation release is advertised as delivering 60 FPS gameplay, so the game itself is intended to provide the major performance improvement over the original console versions. Do not copy PC guides that recommend resolution, texture, shadow, ambient-occlusion, or anti-aliasing changes; those controls are not documented for the console editions.

For a smooth setup:
- Launch the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition released on October 8, 2026, rather than the PS4 or Xbox One build.
- Use your console’s automatic display-detection settings and verify that the television or monitor is receiving a 60 Hz signal.
- Open the game’s Options menu and use only the controls that are present on your installation. The older Xbox One manual lists Control, Gameplay, Audio, and Display categories, but it does not prove that current-generation versions contain performance controls.
- Do not assume that “60 FPS+” means a constant frame rate in every scene. It is a capability label on the Xbox product listing, not an independent benchmark.
If you cannot find a Performance/Quality selector, resolution switch, or frame-rate cap, that is consistent with the official documentation reviewed; there is no confirmed setting you are missing.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release
2K Support announced that Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S became available on October 8, 2026. The announcement describes the release as the same game from 2020 with “60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements.” That is the only frame-rate figure stated by 2K Support.

The Xbox/Microsoft Store listing gives the Xbox Series X|S edition an “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” designation and lists “60 fps+” in its capability information. This confirms how Microsoft presents the product, but it is not a test showing that the game holds a fixed rate during every drive, combat encounter, or busy city scene.
What the official material does not specify
The reviewed sources do not state a target resolution, whether dynamic resolution is used, whether a 120 Hz mode exists, or whether PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have different graphics presets. They also do not publish frame-pacing data or console-by-console performance measurements. Any guide that assigns a specific resolution or claims one console is visibly smoother would be going beyond the available evidence.

On this evidence, neither platform can be ranked as smoother. Both receive the same advertised 60 FPS improvement, while the Xbox listing adds a capability label rather than a measured comparison.

Eligible digital and disc owners
According to 2K Support, eligible owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or the Mafia: The Omertà Collection can obtain the current-generation edition at no additional cost under the conditions described in the support article. Eligibility is platform-specific, so the entitlement must be claimed through the account and store associated with the original purchase.
PS5 digital copy
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the eligible digital edition.
- Open your game library or the Mafia III: Definitive Edition store page on PS5.
- Choose the PS5 version when the store presents multiple editions. Check the platform label before downloading.
- After installation, highlight the game on the home screen, press the Options button, and confirm that the installed item is the PS5 edition rather than the PS4 version.
PS5 disc copy
- Use a PS5 model with a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot validate a PS4 game disc.
- Insert the eligible PS4 Mafia III disc while signed in to the account associated with the entitlement.
- Claim and download the PS5 edition from the store prompt or game hub.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play. The disc functions as the license check even after the PS5 files are installed.

Recommended display setup for a stable 60 Hz experience
Because no in-game graphics controls are documented, the most useful adjustments are outside the game. These steps do not create a higher frame rate; they prevent the console and display from negotiating an unsuitable output.
PS5 display checks
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Leave Resolution on Automatic unless your television requires a fixed supported value.
- Check the information screen for the active video signal and confirm that the display is accepting a 60 Hz output.
- If you use a television’s game mode, enable it through the television’s own picture menu to reduce processing delay. The exact label differs by manufacturer.
- If the image flickers, blanks out, or repeatedly renegotiates, temporarily disable optional features such as variable refresh rate and test again. Re-enable them only if the connection remains stable.
Xbox Series X|S display checks
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Use 4K TV details to confirm what your display and HDMI connection support.
- Set Resolution to the highest mode your television reliably accepts, then use Refresh rate to select a supported 60 Hz output for troubleshooting.
- Run Calibrate TV if the picture is cropped, washed out, or too dark. Calibration changes visibility, not the game’s frame rate.
- If a 120 Hz television produces dropouts or an unstable signal, test at 60 Hz first. The official Mafia III material does not confirm a 120 Hz mode, so do not treat a 120 Hz console output as proof that the game is rendering above 60 FPS.
Television and monitor considerations
- Connect the console directly to the display while testing. Soundbars, capture devices, and older HDMI switches can introduce compatibility problems.
- Use a certified cable appropriate for the resolution and refresh rate you select.
- Disable motion interpolation on the television. It can make camera movement look artificial and adds processing delay; it does not improve the game’s native frame rate.
- Keep the display’s aspect ratio at its normal or 16:9 setting so the game is not being stretched or overscanned.
What to expect in the in-game Options menu
The Xbox One online manual identifies four broad categories: Control, Gameplay, Audio, and Display. That documentation is from the original-era version and should be treated as a menu map, not a current-generation graphics specification.
Control
Use this area for the bindings and controller behavior offered by your build. If the current-generation menu exposes sensitivity, vibration, or inversion choices, adjust them to reduce aiming fatigue. The reviewed documentation does not provide a complete current-gen list, so menu names and available sub-options should be verified on your console.
Gameplay
The manual documents a lethal versus non-lethal takedown choice. This affects how you play encounters, not rendering performance. Choose the behavior you prefer; changing it will not increase frame rate.
Audio
Select the mix that matches your setup and adjust volume levels so dialogue remains clear. Audio changes have no documented effect on 60 FPS performance.

Display
Look here for the options your installed version actually provides, such as brightness, subtitles, or display calibration. Do not infer that a Display heading contains a Performance/Quality toggle. The reviewed official sources do not document such a control for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Many apparent performance problems are caused by launching the backward-compatible PS4 or Xbox One package. Check the platform label before changing television settings.
- PS5: Highlight the game tile, press Options, and inspect the selected game version. If both PS4 and PS5 versions are installed, select the PS5 version from the menu before launching.
- Xbox Series X|S: Open the game’s store or Manage game and add-ons screen and confirm the Series X|S optimization label. If the console offers multiple install packages, remove the Xbox One package only after confirming you own the current-generation entitlement.
- Both platforms: Check that the title is Mafia III: Definitive Edition, not an older standalone listing or a shortcut pointing to a previous-generation installation.
The release date is another clue: the current-generation packages became available on October 8, 2026. A disc or download installed before that date may still be the older build until the upgrade is claimed and installed.

The game appears to run at 30 FPS
- Quit the game completely rather than resuming a suspended session.
- Confirm that the PS5 or Series X|S version is installed and selected.
- Restart the console, then launch the game again.
- Check the console’s active output refresh rate and test at 60 Hz.
- If the problem remains, record whether it occurs everywhere or only during a particular scene. No official source establishes a constant frame-rate guarantee, so isolated dips cannot be diagnosed as a missing user setting.
The image is blurry or unexpectedly low resolution
First verify that the display is receiving the resolution you selected at the console level and that the television is not applying a low-quality or zoomed picture mode. The reviewed sources do not publish a Mafia III resolution target, so a precise in-game pixel count cannot be used to determine whether your installation is behaving correctly.
The screen flickers or goes black
- Reseat both HDMI ends and test a direct connection.
- Temporarily select a 60 Hz output.
- Disable optional variable-refresh features while testing.
- Try another HDMI input that is rated for the console’s output.
- Restore the previous display setting if the television cannot lock onto the new signal.
The upgrade is not free or does not appear
Check the ownership account and the edition you purchased. The no-additional-cost entitlement applies to eligible owners under the conditions in 2K Support’s article; it is not a universal upgrade for every copy or every account. PS5 disc owners must use a console with a disc drive and keep the qualifying disc inserted. Xbox instructions in the announcement focus on eligible digital copies obtained through the Microsoft Store or library.

Save files and achievements: plan before starting over
2K Support states that PS4 and Xbox One save files and achievements do not transfer to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. This limitation is independent of frame rate and cannot be fixed by changing display or gameplay settings.
If you are returning to the game, decide whether a fresh campaign is acceptable before deleting the previous installation. Keep the old version and its local or cloud data until you have confirmed that you no longer need the earlier progress. Expect to earn achievements again on the current-generation edition.
What “smooth performance” means in this release
The defensible expectation is a current-generation presentation built around 60 FPS gameplay, not a guaranteed constant rate or a user-configurable graphics profile. The Xbox “60 FPS+” label should be read as a platform capability claim. It does not establish a measured minimum, frame pacing, or a resolution-versus-performance choice.
For that reason, the best settings are largely about using the right edition and maintaining a clean 60 Hz display path. If the live Options menu on your console later exposes additional controls, their names and effects should be judged from the on-screen descriptions or a current platform-specific notice rather than imported from PC settings guides or the old Xbox One manual.
