Because the Air tops out at 32GB of unified memory in the cited configurations, check your largest simultaneous workload before ordering. Multiple virtual machines, very large photo catalogs, high-resolution timelines, complex software projects and data sets can make memory capacity more important than a modest SSD increase.
Choose the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 Pro for a higher sustained-work tier
The M5 Pro configuration is aimed at people whose applications can use more CPU and GPU resources than the Air offers. Apple lists up to an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, 64GB of unified memory and 307GB/s memory bandwidth. SSD options reach 4TB, so the main reason to select this tier is the compute and memory headroom rather than a larger maximum drive.
This is a practical middle ground for professional development, demanding creative applications and other workloads that benefit from more cores or memory but do not require the M5 Max’s 8TB option or 128GB ceiling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 Max for maximum documented capacity
The M5 Max is the only model in these specifications with an 8TB internal SSD option. Apple lists 2TB as the shown starting capacity, with 4TB and 8TB configurations, 32-core or 40-core GPU choices and up to 128GB of unified memory. Its listed memory bandwidth reaches 614GB/s.
Select it when those capabilities map to a real requirement: very large local media or data sets, GPU-heavy production, many simultaneous professional applications, or projects that exceed the Air and M5 Pro memory limits. Buying it solely because it has the largest numbers can add cost and weight without improving a workload that already fits comfortably on an Air.
Which MacBook has the most storage?
Among the configurations documented by Apple here, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max has the most internal storage at 8TB. The M5 Pro version reaches 4TB, as do the listed MacBook Air M5 configurations. The 13-inch Air starts at 512GB, while the M5 Pro and M5 Max specifications list 1TB or 2TB starting choices depending on the chip tier.
Capacity is configured at purchase. Apple explains that a terabyte is one trillion bytes and that formatted capacity is lower, because the operating system and the way storage is formatted consume space. Leave working room for macOS, applications, caches, temporary render files, updates and backups instead of planning to fill the printed number completely.

How much MacBook storage do you need?
Start with the largest files you keep locally
- Documents, browser work and coding: A 512GB Air can be a reasonable starting point when most files are online or archived elsewhere. Include local development tools, package caches and test environments in your estimate.
- Photos: Decide whether the Mac will hold an entire original-resolution library or only current projects. Original files, previews and editing caches can grow faster than the catalog itself.
- Video and audio: Account for camera originals, proxies, project files, exports and scratch space. Active editing benefits from free space even when completed projects are moved to an archive.
- Virtual machines and local data: Allocate for each operating-system image, container, dataset and snapshot. Memory capacity may become the limiting factor before storage does.
Use a capacity buffer
Estimate the space needed for current files, then reserve additional room for active projects and system growth. A 1TB or 2TB configuration can reduce the need to constantly move working files, while 4TB or 8TB makes sense when the material must remain local and regularly available. The correct choice is the smallest capacity that leaves comfortable working space for your next project cycle, not merely today’s used-space total.
Storage tiers in practical terms
The 512GB option on the 13-inch Air is designed for people whose documents, applications and active projects fit on one internal drive with room to spare. It can work well when a cloud service, network location or archive holds older material. Before selecting it, total the local installers, development environments, media caches and offline files that are easy to overlook.
Moving to 1TB gives a larger working area without changing the chip tier. A 2TB configuration is more comfortable for sizable photo libraries, several current video projects or large software environments that you want available offline. The 4TB option on the Air and M5 Pro is useful when frequent external-drive management would interrupt your work. The 8TB M5 Max tier is a specialist choice for material that must remain on the laptop rather than an automatic recommendation for everyone.
Remember that these are nominal decimal capacities. Apple states that formatted space is lower, and macOS, applications, caches, swap data and temporary exports all compete for the remaining room. Check the storage-management view periodically and move completed projects before the drive approaches full capacity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Unified memory is different from SSD storage
SSD capacity determines how much data stays on the computer. Unified memory is the fast working area shared by the CPU and GPU while applications run. More SSD space cannot compensate for a memory limit that forces applications to swap data to disk, and more memory does not provide room for a large media library.
The Air configurations cited by Apple go up to 32GB of unified memory. The 14-inch Pro specifications go up to 64GB on M5 Pro and 128GB on M5 Max. Choose memory based on the largest workload you expect to keep open at once; choose storage based on the files and applications you want to retain locally.
When the memory step matters
Sixteen gigabytes may be adequate for a browser-heavy office day, ordinary coding and moderate photo work. Twenty-four or 32GB gives more headroom for larger catalogs, simultaneous creative applications and development tools. The 64GB M5 Pro and 128GB M5 Max choices are aimed at substantially larger projects, multiple virtual machines, GPU-oriented production or datasets that cannot be kept small. These examples describe planning considerations, not a promise that every application will use all available memory.

What the published performance specifications mean
CPU and GPU cores
The M5 Air is listed with a 10-core CPU and either an 8-core or 10-core GPU on the 13-inch model. M5 Pro configurations reach an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU. M5 Max configurations use 32-core or 40-core GPUs. These are configuration choices, not a guarantee that every application will scale with every additional core.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Apple lists 153GB/s for M5 Air, 307GB/s for M5 Pro and up to 614GB/s for M5 Max. Bandwidth describes how quickly the chip can move data between unified memory and its processing engines under suitable conditions. It is most relevant to software that can keep many cores and large data sets busy; ordinary productivity applications may not show a proportional difference.
Why specifications are not benchmarks
The cited Apple pages provide hardware details rather than comparable independent tests. They do not establish a universal ranking for video exports, code builds, 3D rendering, games or machine-learning workloads. Treat the Pro’s additional memory, GPU options and bandwidth as extra capability on paper, then confirm that your applications support and benefit from those resources.
Portability, screens and external-storage workflow
The 13-inch Air is the most compact option in this group. The 15-inch Air trades some portability for a larger display. Both Air choices target users who want the M5 platform without moving to the Pro configuration tiers. The 14-inch Pro is the choice for buyers who need the documented M5 Pro or M5 Max options and accept a more performance-oriented system.
Apple lists Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports on the MacBook Air. That permits an external SSD for a photo or video library, a project archive, or overflow capacity. The specifications establish the ports, but they do not test or endorse a particular drive, enclosure or real-world transfer rate. Check the drive’s connector, power requirements, filesystem and compatibility separately.
A sensible external-drive arrangement
- Keep macOS, applications and current working files on the internal SSD.
- Use an external SSD for large libraries, completed projects or datasets that do not need to travel with the Mac every day.
- Maintain a separate backup; an external drive that contains the only copy is not a backup strategy.
- Check free space before importing a large project and move finished material before the internal drive becomes crowded.
Cost, configuration and availability checks
Storage, memory and chip upgrades are selected at purchase, so compare the price of the complete configuration rather than the base model’s headline figure. A higher SSD tier may be worthwhile if it prevents repeated archive work, while additional memory can be the more consequential upgrade for applications that keep large projects open. There is no universal value winner because the appropriate balance depends on your files and software.
Apple’s combinations, prices and delivery dates can vary by country and change over time. Check the local Apple store or an Apple-authorized retailer immediately before ordering. Confirm the exact screen size, chip, GPU core count, unified-memory amount and SSD capacity shown in the cart. Do not assume that a configuration listed on one regional page is offered in another.

Also confirm what your workflow needs from accessories. An external SSD can add capacity to an Air’s Thunderbolt 4/USB-C setup, but the drive’s enclosure, cable, power draw and filesystem affect usability. Budget for a second backup destination if the external drive will hold important originals.
Configuration advice before you buy
- List your workload: Identify the applications, file types and largest project you expect to use over the machine’s life.
- Set memory first: Select 16GB, 24GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB according to the largest simultaneous workload supported by your chosen model.
- Set internal storage second: Choose 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB based on local files plus working room, not the nominal capacity alone.
- Pick the chip tier: Stay with M5 Air for portability and general use; move to M5 Pro or M5 Max when your software needs the higher CPU/GPU and memory configurations.
- Check the exact regional listing: Apple’s available combinations, prices and delivery dates can vary by market. Confirm that the displayed chip, memory and SSD match your intended configuration before payment.
- Plan backups and expansion: Decide which data remains internal, which moves to external storage and where the second copy will live.
Questions to answer before checkout
- How much space do your current files use, and how much will the next project add?
- Will you keep originals locally, or can older work live on an external or network archive?
- What is the largest number of applications, virtual machines or datasets you run simultaneously?
- Does your software benefit from additional GPU cores, or is storage and portability the priority?
- Are the exact memory, SSD and chip choices available in your region at a price you accept?
- Where will the second copy of irreplaceable files live?
Common buying mistakes
Buying the largest SSD instead of enough memory
A huge drive does not make an application faster when the workload is constrained by memory. If you regularly run several heavyweight applications, virtual machines or large creative projects simultaneously, prioritize a memory configuration that can hold them comfortably.
Assuming the M5 Max is automatically the best value
The M5 Max supplies the highest documented storage, memory and GPU ceilings, but those advantages matter only when software and project size use them. A configured Air can be the better tool for a mobile writer, student, developer or photographer whose files fit locally and whose applications do not require Pro-tier resources.
Treating nominal capacity as usable capacity
Formatted capacity is lower than the decimal number printed in the configuration. System data, applications, caches and temporary files also consume space. Keep a buffer and review storage usage before a major import or software update.
Expecting a specification sheet to predict every result
Core counts and bandwidth are useful for selecting a tier, but they are not independent application tests. If a particular workflow determines the purchase, look for software-specific evidence for that workflow rather than assuming a higher specification guarantees a fixed percentage improvement.
Ignoring regional configuration differences
The capacities and combinations listed here come from Apple’s cited technical specifications. Verify the exact local store listing, price and availability for the model you intend to order, especially for custom memory and SSD options.
