For most students, start by comparing the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 with 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. Choose the 15-inch Air if a larger built-in screen matters more than a smaller footprint. Consider a MacBook Pro when your course requirements or sustained workload justify it; if price is the main concern, the MacBook Neo is another option to investigate against your program’s software needs.
Which Mac should a student start with?
The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 with 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD is a sensible starting point for a general student shortlist. It pairs a moderate screen size with the memory and storage configuration shown in Apple’s U.S. education institution price list dated September 9, 2026. That document lists it at $1,199, but this is institution-list pricing—not a verified consumer price or individual student discount.
This is a configuration-based recommendation, not a hands-on performance verdict. The right choice depends on your actual budget, required course software, workload, screen preference, and how often you carry your laptop.

| Option | Configuration or distinction in Apple’s U.S. education institution price list | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | 16GB memory, 512GB SSD; listed at $1,199 in Apple’s September 9, 2026 U.S. institution price list | A starting point if you want a smaller-screen Air and the listed memory and storage configuration. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | 16GB memory, 512GB SSD; listed at $1,399 in the same price list | If more built-in screen area matters more to you than the 13-inch model’s smaller footprint. |
| MacBook Pro | The list includes M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max configurations, with higher memory and storage options | If a department specifies capabilities that an Air configuration does not meet, or your sustained workload provides a concrete reason to choose the Pro line. |
| MacBook Neo | 13-inch A18 Pro configurations with 8GB memory and either 256GB or 512GB storage appear in the list | Worth checking when budget is central, after confirming that the configuration meets your course software and workload requirements. |

How to choose for your course and budget
Check your real total budget
Compare current prices in your country and confirm the eligibility rules and purchase terms of the relevant education store. The U.S. institution list is not an individual student discount schedule, and its figures should not be treated as the price you will pay.
Choose between a 13-inch and 15-inch screen
The 13-inch Air is the smaller-screen option; the 15-inch Air gives you more built-in screen area. Think about where you study and whether you regularly carry your laptop. The available source supports the screen-size distinction, but does not establish which size students find more comfortable or portable in daily use.

Match memory and storage to the exact configuration
Compare the memory and SSD capacity, not just the Mac family name. The listed Air configuration has 16GB of memory and 512GB storage, while the Neo configurations shown have 8GB and either 256GB or 512GB. The Pro line includes higher memory and storage options. These differences are reasons to check requirements and configuration details—not proof that one model is right for every student.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Let course requirements decide whether Pro is warranted
Look for your school’s or department’s required software and minimum computer specifications, including any stated memory, graphics, or operating-system needs. A Pro model makes sense when those requirements or your sustained workload provide a specific reason to choose it; do not assume that every course benefits from the higher-tier line.

Verify the listing before you order
If you buy through a marketplace, check the chip, screen size, memory, and SSD capacity against the configuration you chose. Confirm the seller, stock, and current price as well; similar model names can refer to different configurations.

Apple’s September 9, 2026 U.S. education institution price list is evidence that the configurations and institution-list prices shown above were listed in that document. It does not establish individual student eligibility, a consumer student price, or prices in other countries. Apple’s comparison page provides family and feature context, but its rendered data includes dynamic price placeholders and legacy rows, so it should not be used to infer current retail prices or a complete current lineup.
