The best Mac productivity app depends on the friction you want to remove. Choose Alfred if you want a keyboard-first launcher that can grow into custom workflows, Raycast if you want an extensible command center for quick actions, or Things 3 if your main problem is capturing and planning tasks across Apple devices.
These tools solve different problems rather than competing feature-for-feature. Start with one repeated task—opening a set of files, inserting a standard response, resizing a window, or remembering a follow-up—and choose the app that removes that step with the least ongoing configuration.
Choose by the bottleneck in your day
“Productivity” is not one workflow. A launcher changes how you reach apps, files and commands; a task manager changes how you remember and schedule work. The right choice is therefore defined by the action you repeat most often.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- You lose time searching and clicking: Alfred is the most direct fit for hotkeys, keywords, search and personal workflows.
- You want one command interface for many actions: Raycast combines an extensible launcher with snippets, quicklinks, scripts, file search and window controls.
- You forget commitments or struggle to plan: Things 3 is built around to-dos, projects, areas, tags and calendar-aware scheduling.
No independent productivity-outcome statistic was established for these apps, so treat “best” as workflow fit rather than a measured promise of saving a particular number of minutes.

Alfred: the customizable launcher and workflow builder
Who should choose it
Choose Alfred when the repeated friction is getting to something quickly: an application, file, folder, web search or small multi-step routine. Its core launcher is useful immediately, while the customization layer rewards people who are willing to define their own hotkeys and workflows.
What you can customize
Alfred’s official product information lists hotkeys, keywords, text expansion, search, clipboard history, themes and custom workflows. A keyword can launch an action without navigating menus; a hotkey can open a frequently used destination; a text expansion can replace a short trigger with a longer response. Themes change the launcher interface, while workflows connect several actions behind one command.
Free core versus Powerpack
The free version covers app and file search and other core launcher functions. The paid Powerpack adds workflows and features such as clipboard history, snippets, file navigation and Universal Actions. The official support material identifies two individual license types, but a current verified price is not established here, so check Alfred’s licensing page before treating any amount as current.

Alfred setup in a practical sequence
- Install and assign a memorable hotkey. Pick a shortcut you can press without moving your hands from the keyboard.
- Test the core search. Open Alfred, type an application name, then try a file and a folder. If results are noisy, adjust search scope and ranking before adding automation.
- Add keywords for repeated destinations. Use short, distinct terms for work folders, reference documents or routine web searches.
- Use text expansion for stable phrases. Reserve triggers for text you type repeatedly and avoid abbreviations that could appear in normal prose.
- Upgrade only when a real limitation appears. Clipboard history, snippets, file navigation and custom workflows are Powerpack features; do not pay simply because an advanced feature exists.
- Build one workflow at a time. Start with a single routine, document its trigger, and keep the action understandable enough to troubleshoot later.
Alfred’s trade-offs
- Its greatest strength is control, which means you become responsible for naming, organizing and maintaining your workflows.
- The free launcher can solve search friction without requiring the paid tier, but advanced automation depends on Powerpack.
- The product page snapshot identifies version 5.8.1 b2349 and support for macOS 10.14 or later on 64-bit Intel and Apple silicon. Treat that as a dated snapshot, not a guarantee for a future macOS release.
Raycast: an extendable command center
Who should choose it
Raycast fits a workflow made of many small commands. Instead of maintaining separate menu-bar utilities, shortcuts and scripts, you can expose frequent actions through one launcher. It is particularly useful when you want aliases or hotkeys for commands but also want discoverable search when you forget the exact trigger.
Features that matter for customization
Raycast’s official homepage lists snippets, quicklinks, hotkeys, aliases, scripts, file search, window management, reminders and focus tools. Extensions can add commands to the launcher, while quicklinks open known destinations and snippets insert reusable text. Window management and focus features address desktop state rather than task planning, so they complement—but do not replace—a task manager.
Compatibility and plan checks
Current homepage search text states that macOS Tahoe and Apple silicon are required. Because operating-system support and distribution plans can change, verify your Mac’s compatibility on Raycast’s current install page immediately before installation. Current plan names and prices were not established in the available product information; inspect the live pricing screen rather than relying on an old article or screenshot.

Raycast setup in a practical sequence
- Install and open the launcher. Set a hotkey that is distinct from Alfred or other launchers if you already use one.
- Create one alias or hotkey. Choose a command you perform daily, such as opening a project folder or a frequently visited service.
- Add a snippet. Store one stable response, command fragment or meeting template, then test the trigger in a text field.
- Use quicklinks for destinations. Add only links you open repeatedly; a large undifferentiated list makes search less useful.
- Evaluate extensions selectively. Install an extension when it removes a concrete step. Record what it does and remove unused extensions so the command list remains understandable.
- Configure window or focus tools only after launcher habits stick. These features are valuable, but adding every available control at once increases cognitive and maintenance cost.
Raycast’s trade-offs
- Its breadth makes it a strong single command surface, but an extension-heavy setup requires ongoing curation.
- It can trigger actions and manage desktop state; it is not a replacement for a structured task system such as Things.
- Confirm the current macOS and processor requirements before recommending it for a specific Mac, especially when the machine is Intel-based or running an older system.
Things 3: task capture and planning for Apple users
Who should choose it
Choose Things when the central problem is remembering, clarifying and scheduling work rather than launching software. Its model separates individual to-dos from larger projects and ongoing areas, then uses Today and Upcoming views to make timing visible.
How its organization works
- To-dos: individual actions with notes, checklists or due information.
- Projects: outcomes that require multiple related actions.
- Areas: ongoing responsibilities such as work, home or study that do not have a single finish date.
- Tags: cross-cutting context, such as calls, errands or a particular person.
- Today and Upcoming: planning views for what needs attention now and what is scheduled later.
The app also lists calendar integration, Quick Entry and Shortcuts integration. Quick Entry is useful when an idea appears outside the app; Shortcuts can connect task creation to other Apple automations without turning Things into a general-purpose launcher.
Devices and synchronization
The App Store listing describes Things apps for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, along with free Things Cloud sync. That makes it the clearest choice of these three when capture must follow you across Apple devices. Availability and system requirements can change, so check the current listing for the exact versions supported by your devices.

Things setup in a practical sequence
- Create a small set of areas. Start with broad ongoing responsibilities instead of making an area for every project.
- Capture tasks immediately. Use Quick Entry when an action occurs to you, then write the next physical step rather than a vague outcome.
- Group multi-step outcomes as projects. Give each project a clear finish condition and put its next action where you can see it.
- Add tags sparingly. Use tags only when they answer a recurring planning question, such as where or how a task can be done.
- Plan Today deliberately. Move only realistic work into Today; leave the rest in Upcoming or its project so the daily list remains credible.
- Connect your calendar if timing matters. Calendar integration helps you see appointments beside planned tasks, but it does not remove the need to estimate your available time.
- Use Shortcuts for capture and handoffs. Automate a specific entry or reminder flow instead of attempting to reproduce an entire launcher inside Things.
Price context and trade-offs
Zapier’s July 29, 2026 Mac productivity roundup listed the Mac version at $49.99. That is a dated roundup figure, not a live merchant quote; verify the current App Store price before purchase. The App Store listing includes praise attributed to Wirecutter: “Things offers the best combination of design and functionality of any app we tested, with nearly all the features of other power user applications and a delightful interface that never gets in the way of your work.” Treat that as the cited publication’s opinion, not an independent productivity measurement.
Things is intentionally task-focused. If you mainly need file search, command aliases or window controls, Alfred or Raycast is a better starting point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich app fits common workflow patterns?
| If your day looks like this | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You open the same apps, folders and searches repeatedly | Alfred | Hotkeys, keywords and search address access friction directly. |
| You want snippets, scripts, quicklinks and window commands in one interface | Raycast | Its extensible command model covers several quick-action categories. |
| You capture commitments on multiple Apple devices | Things 3 | Quick Entry, task structures and Things Cloud support a capture-and-plan workflow. |
| You want both automation and task planning | Use a launcher plus a task manager | Let Alfred or Raycast trigger actions and let Things hold commitments; avoid duplicating the same task in both. |
| You dislike maintaining configurations | Things 3, or the basic layer of Alfred | Start with built-in organization or search before adopting a large workflow library. |
A low-risk way to choose
- Write down one repeated annoyance. Examples include “I search for the same folder,” “I paste the same reply,” or “I forget follow-ups captured on my phone.”
- Match the annoyance to the app’s primary job. Search and automation point to Alfred; command breadth points to Raycast; capture and planning point to Things.
- Test the smallest useful configuration. One Alfred keyword, one Raycast snippet or one Things project is enough for an initial trial.
- Measure friction qualitatively. After several work sessions, ask whether the action is easier to find, trigger or remember. Do not assume a larger feature count equals a better result.
- Add complexity only after the first improvement is real. More workflows, extensions, tags and integrations create maintenance obligations.
- Recheck volatile details before committing money or hardware compatibility. Confirm current prices, licensing, macOS support, processor requirements and device availability on the vendor or App Store page.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a launcher as a task manager
A launcher can make a task easier to start, but it does not automatically provide project structure, scheduling or review habits. Keep commitments in Things if planning is the problem.
Best Value
- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Installing every extension or workflow
Large command lists slow discovery and make failures harder to diagnose. Add one action, name it clearly and remove it when the underlying routine disappears.
Duplicating systems
Recording the same task in a launcher snippet, a notes file and a task manager creates competing sources of truth. Decide which app owns each category of information.
Assuming compatibility from an old article
Alfred’s documented snapshot is version 5.8.1 b2349 on macOS 10.14 or later, while Raycast’s current search text references macOS Tahoe and Apple silicon. Neither statement should be generalized to future releases; verify the live requirements for your Mac.
The Tool Desk

The $49.99 Things figure comes from a July 29, 2026 roundup, and Alfred and Raycast pricing was not verified here. Check current vendor or App Store pricing at the moment you decide.
Bottom line
Pick Alfred for a personalized keyboard launcher, Raycast for a broad command-and-action hub, and Things 3 for Apple-centered task planning. The most sustainable setup is the one that removes a specific repeated step without creating a second job of maintaining the tool.
