Start with macOS Stacks if your problem is a desktop covered with loose icons. Stacks is built into macOS, groups items by kind, date, or tags, and requires no additional software. Choose a separate utility only when your underlying need is different: rule-based filing, a temporary drop zone, file naming, visual desktop zones, or disk-space cleanup.
The key distinction is that these tools do not perform the same job. Stacks changes how items are grouped on the visible desktop; a filing utility moves or renames files in watched folders; a staging shelf holds items while you work; a cleanup utility finds candidates for deletion. Matching the tool to the type of clutter prevents an expensive app from solving the wrong problem.
What “keeping files tidy” means on a Mac
Desktop clutter usually comes from one of four workflows. Identify yours before installing anything:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Visual clutter: You want fewer individual icons while leaving files where they are. macOS Stacks is designed for this.
- Repeated filing: Screenshots, invoices, downloads, or project exports should be moved and renamed automatically. A rule-based organizer such as Hazel fits this job.
- Temporary holding: You need a place to collect files during a task without scattering them across the desktop. Unclutter and Dropover take this approach.
- Storage clutter: Your disk is filling with caches, installers, duplicate images, old document versions, or unusually large files. A cleanup utility such as CleanMyMac is aimed at discovery and removal, not desktop layout.
File naming is a separate problem again. Tidy focuses on suggesting descriptive names from file contents, with you approving each change. Visual-zone apps such as iCollections and Happy Folders use labeled areas or tiles so files have a place on the desktop, rather than merely collapsing them into macOS-generated stacks.

Use macOS Stacks before adding an app
Stacks is the most direct answer when loose desktop icons are the issue. Apple describes it as a way to group desktop items by kind, date, or tags. When grouped by kind, images and presentations appear in their respective stacks, and newly added items are grouped automatically.
Turn on Stacks
- Click an empty area of the desktop to make Finder active.
- Open the desktop context menu and choose Use Stacks.
- Open the same menu and choose Group Stacks By, then select Kind, Date Last Opened, Date Added, Date Modified, or Tags, depending on the macOS version and the options shown.
- Click a stack to expand it, then click again to collapse it. Opening a stack does not move the files to another folder; it changes their presentation on the desktop.
Kind is a useful default for mixed screenshots, PDFs, images, and presentations. Date-based grouping is better for a temporary work area where the newest material should be easy to reach. Tags work when you already use Finder tags consistently.
Fine-tune the desktop view
Choose Show View Options from the desktop context menu to adjust icon size, grid spacing, and text size. Finder can also sort desktop items by name, kind, date added, size, or tags. Sorting and Stacks solve different problems: sorting orders individual icons, while Stacks collapses related items into groups.

When Stacks is enough
Use only Stacks when you want a reversible, no-install solution and do not need files moved or renamed. Turning Use Stacks off restores the individual icons. Stacks will not create a project-folder system, clean old downloads, or reclaim disk space; those require a different workflow.

Unclutter: a menu-bar shelf for files, notes, and clipboard history
Unclutter is for people who need quick access to working files but do not want those files sitting on the desktop. Its interface combines three panels: a file-storage area, notes, and clipboard history. The file panel acts as a drop zone that keeps items close while you work.
Best use cases
- Collecting attachments before sending them.
- Keeping a small set of active project files available across applications.
- Saving snippets or copied values alongside the files they belong to.
- Moving temporary material off the desktop without deciding its permanent folder immediately.
This is access convenience, not automatic filing. A file placed on the shelf remains in that shelf until you move it elsewhere; the product is not presented as a rule engine that classifies every download.

Compatibility and purchase details
The vendor says Unclutter runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and supports macOS 10.13 or later. It also describes cloud synchronization for files and notes and advertises a lifetime-license/trial arrangement. Compatibility, synchronization behavior, and licensing terms can change, so check the current product listing before relying on those details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDropover: temporary staging while you drag files
Dropover addresses a narrower problem than a desktop organizer: moving several items between folders, applications, or windows without repeatedly arranging Finder windows. You collect files on a temporary shelf, then drag the group to its destination.
Where it helps
- Drag files from different folders onto a shelf.
- Continue browsing without keeping every source window visible.
- Drop the collected group into a destination folder, application, or upload area.
The App Store release history refers to shelves, folder monitoring, file actions, and behavior when files are moved or deleted. Those entries show an active staging workflow, not a promise that Dropover will automatically sort an entire desktop into permanent folders.
Choose Dropover instead of a filing engine when
Your clutter is temporary and task-based. If you repeatedly want “all screenshots from today moved to this folder,” you need a rule system rather than a staging shelf. If you want a persistent place for notes and clipboard history as well as files, Unclutter is the closer match.
Hazel: rule-based organization for monitored folders
Hazel belongs to the automatic-filing category. The published description says it watches selected folders and applies user-defined rules to move, rename, sort, or clean files. That makes it fundamentally different from Stacks: Stacks changes the desktop view, while rules change file locations or names.
How to think about a rule system
A practical setup starts with one folder, one predictable condition, and one destination. For example, a rule might identify files with a particular extension or name pattern and move them into a project folder. Add renaming only after the move behaves as expected. Keep a rule’s scope narrow until you know how it handles duplicates, similarly named files, and files still being downloaded.

Important verification point
The detailed Hazel feature description available for this comparison comes from a vendor-authored 2026 comparison rather than Hazel’s own documentation. Treat the category distinction as useful, but confirm current rule options, pricing, supported macOS versions, and safeguards in Hazel’s official materials before making it the foundation of an unattended workflow.
CleanMyMac: find storage clutter rather than arrange icons
CleanMyMac is aimed at reclaiming disk space and identifying items that may be safe to remove. MacPaw presents it as a way to locate large files, duplicate images, installers, old document versions, caches, and other cleanup candidates.
What its numbers mean
The product page displays the claims “9 GB of space reclaimed on average every month” and “8.6M clutter items removed every month.” These are vendor-published figures; the page does not state the measurement method, so they should not be treated as independent results or as a prediction of what your Mac will recover.
Use it for the right symptom
Choose a cleanup utility when macOS reports low storage or you need to discover large, duplicate, or temporary items. Do not choose it merely because the desktop looks crowded. Deleting caches or installers will not create a cleaner visual layout, and Stacks will not recover disk space.
Trial and deletion discipline
The vendor page offered a seven-day trial at the time described. Before deleting anything, review the item category, open files you do not recognize, and keep personal archives or installers you still need. Current trial terms and supported macOS versions should be checked on the vendor’s listing before installation.
Tidy: review suggested names instead of moving files blindly
Tidy focuses on file names. Its vendor page says it can inspect Downloads and Desktop, infer descriptive names from file contents, and present suggested changes for your review. You select which suggestions to apply rather than accepting an unattended rename pass.

When better names solve the problem
Use this approach when files are technically in the right folders but names such as “IMG_4821,” “scan,” or “document 3” make searching difficult. Descriptive names improve Finder searches and make a folder understandable without opening every item.
Review and undo
Because suggestions are based on file contents, inspect the proposed name before applying it, especially for confidential documents or files with legal, financial, or client context. The vendor says actions can be undone. It also describes a one-time purchase; confirm the current amount and licensing terms before buying.
Visual desktop zones: labeled areas instead of stacks
Visual organizers take a different approach from Stacks. A stack is generated from file attributes such as kind or date. A visual-zone app gives you labeled areas or custom desktop tiles that represent concepts such as “Current project,” “To file,” or “Reference.”
Who benefits
- People who think spatially and want project areas visible at a glance.
- Users who want several named zones rather than one stack per file type.
- Anyone who needs a deliberate “inbox” area before filing items permanently.
A 2026 vendor comparison places iCollections and Happy Folders in this visual-organizer category. Because that comparison promotes one of the products, verify each app’s current features, one-time price, and macOS compatibility in the respective official listing. Do not assume that a visual tile automatically moves, renames, or backs up the files it displays.
Pick the tool by the clutter you can describe
| Your immediate problem | First choice | Why | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loose icons covering the desktop | macOS Stacks | Groups visible items by kind, date, or tags with no installation | Does not create a permanent filing system or free disk space |
| Files need to be moved or renamed whenever they arrive | A rule-based organizer such as Hazel | Watches folders and applies conditions and actions | Requires careful rule design and current documentation checks |
| You need a temporary holding area during a task | Unclutter or Dropover | Unclutter provides a shelf with notes and clipboard history; Dropover provides drag-and-drop shelves | Neither is established here as a complete automatic desktop sorter |
| The disk is full or you cannot find large files | CleanMyMac | Surfaces large files, duplicates, installers, caches, and other cleanup candidates | Does not primarily organize desktop icons |
| Names are vague or inconsistent | Tidy | Suggests descriptive names and lets you approve changes | Does not replace a folder-routing system |
| You want named visual work areas | A visual-zone app | Uses custom labeled areas or tiles | Feature and compatibility details vary by product and need confirmation |
A low-risk workflow that keeps the desktop tidy
- Archive or back up first. Keep an independent copy of important documents before enabling any automated move, rename, or cleanup action.
- Separate active work from permanent storage. Decide which folder is your project workspace and which folder is your archive. A staging shelf is temporary; it should not become an invisible second desktop.
- Enable Stacks. This immediately reduces visual noise without relocating files.
- Create one intake area. Use a Downloads subfolder, a project “To file” folder, or a shelf. Avoid monitoring the entire home folder until you understand the consequences.
- Test one automation. Apply a single rule to a small set of sample files. Check destinations, names, duplicate handling, and whether files that are still downloading are left alone.
- Review weekly. Empty the staging area, resolve ambiguous names, and remove only storage items you recognize.
- Document the arrangement. A short note stating where screenshots, invoices, exports, and archives belong makes the system easier to maintain and troubleshoot.
Common problems and fixes
Stacks are enabled but the desktop still feels chaotic
Choose a grouping that matches the work. Kind creates broad categories; date-based grouping is better for recent work; tags require consistent tagging. Adjust icon size and grid spacing in Show View Options. If you need named project zones, Stacks may be the wrong model and a visual-zone app may fit better.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
An automatic rule produces surprising results
Disable or narrow the rule, then test with copies. Conditions should be specific enough to exclude unfinished downloads, similarly named documents, and files belonging to another project. Add one action at a time; combining move, rename, and cleanup actions makes errors harder to diagnose.
The desktop looks tidy but storage is still low
Visual grouping does not reduce file size. Use a storage-discovery workflow to locate large files, duplicate images, installers, old versions, and caches, then review each candidate before deletion. Keep personal archives and recovery media out of broad cleanup selections.
Compatibility, pricing, and reversibility change
Software support, trials, prices, and licensing are moving targets. Unclutter’s stated macOS 10.13-or-later support, Apple Silicon and Intel support, cloud-sync behavior, and lifetime-license/trial offer are vendor claims. Tidy’s one-time purchase and undo behavior are also vendor claims. CleanMyMac’s seven-day trial and published space-recovery figures can change, and Dropover’s behavior may evolve with App Store releases.
Before purchase or deployment, confirm the current macOS requirement for your Mac, whether the app is native or runs through compatibility technology, what happens when a file is moved or deleted, whether sync is optional, and how to undo or restore actions. A tool that cannot explain its recovery path is a poor choice for unattended filing.
Bottom line for choosing a Mac organizer
Use macOS Stacks as the default: it is free, built in, automatic for newly added desktop items, and sufficient for visual clutter. Add Unclutter when you need a persistent shelf with notes and clipboard history, or Dropover when your work is mostly temporary drag-and-drop staging. Choose a rule-based system such as Hazel for hands-off folder filing, Tidy for human-approved naming, and CleanMyMac for storage discovery. Select a visual-zone app only when labeled desktop areas are more useful to you than attribute-based stacks.
