Best overall starting point: choose a 2TB PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 SSD with a PS5-compatible heatsink, such as the WD Black SN850X 2TB identified by Tom’s Hardware as its best PS5 pick. The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB is that guide’s alternate fast pick, while the WD Black SN850X 8TB is the capacity choice for very large libraries. These are editorial recommendations, not a guarantee that one model will outperform every other compatible drive in every game.
Every drive must satisfy Sony’s physical and technical rules: 250GB to 8TB capacity, PCIe Gen4x4 interface, M.2 Key M connector, at least 5,500MB/s recommended sequential read speed, and effective heat dissipation. The complete drive-and-heatsink assembly must fit the PS5 expansion bay. Sony also warns that a compatible M.2 SSD can perform differently from the console’s internal SSD in some games.
Quick recommendations
The right choice depends more on fit, cooling and capacity than on the highest number printed on the box. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 buying guide names the following models and categories:

Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
If you already own a bare M.2 drive, TechRadar identifies the Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink as a separate option. The drive and heatsink must be assessed as one assembly, not as independent parts.
What the PS5 actually supports
Sony’s requirements are the compatibility gate. A drive that fails any one of these checks can be unusable or physically impossible to install.
| Requirement | PS5 rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Storage type | M.2 NVMe SSD | The expansion slot uses NVMe over PCIe; M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. |
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 | The console is designed for four-lane PCIe 4.0 operation. |
| Connector/key | M.2 Key M | The keying and connector must match the PS5 slot. |
| Capacity | 250GB minimum to 8TB maximum | Drives outside this range are not within Sony’s supported specification. |
| Sequential read speed | Sony recommends 5,500MB/s or faster | This is a recommendation, not a promise of identical game performance. |
| Width | Up to 25mm including the cooling structure | A heatsink can make an otherwise suitable drive too wide. |
| Supported lengths | 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm or 110mm | The drive length must correspond to one of the mounting positions. |
| Total thickness | Up to 11.25mm including the cooling structure | Measure the complete top-and-bottom assembly, not only the SSD. |
| Cooling | Effective heat dissipation required | Use an integrated heatsink or a separately installed cooling structure. |
Sony permits single-sided and double-sided M.2 drives. That does not remove the thickness limit: the NAND, controller, labels, thermal pads and heatsink all occupy the available space. Sony’s complete dimensions and installation guidance are on its PS5 M.2 SSD support page.
How to choose the best drive for your library
Choose capacity before chasing speed
Capacity determines how often you will delete and redownload games. A 2TB drive is the practical middle ground for many players; a 4TB model makes sense when several large games, updates and downloadable content need to remain installed; 8TB is for people who want the fewest storage-management decisions. Tom’s Hardware specifically suggests considering 2TB or 4TB models for PS5 buyers and lists an 8TB SN850X as its high-capacity option.
Usable space is lower than the number on the label because the console formats the drive and reserves file-system capacity. Compare models at the same nominal capacity, then compare the total cost of the drive and heatsink. No current price is established here, so avoid treating a temporary sale or a retailer listing as a permanent value comparison.

Check the exact SKU and heatsink
Many SSD families are sold both bare and with a pre-installed heatsink. A bare drive requires a compatible cooling structure; a heatsink edition reduces installation work but can exceed Sony’s 11.25mm thickness or 25mm width limits. Read the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing for the exact capacity, because heatsink dimensions can change between capacities or revisions.
Never stack a second heatsink on top of one already attached to the SSD. Sony explicitly warns against this arrangement. Remove nothing from a factory heatsink unless the manufacturer’s instructions require it; damaged thermal pads or exposed components can compromise cooling and warranty coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the speed figure as a compatibility filter
Look for a manufacturer-rated sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s. This figure helps identify suitable Gen4 performance, but it is not a console benchmark. Vendor numbers are maximums measured under specified test conditions. They can vary with capacity, firmware, workload and host system.
Sony’s warning is important: “Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.” If one title behaves differently from the internal drive, the specification sheet alone cannot rule out that possibility.
Do not pay a Gen5 premium for a Gen4 slot
Tom’s Hardware says a PCIe 5.0 drive has no practical purpose for PS5 under current performance and pricing conditions. Seagate likewise explains that a Gen5 drive used in a PS5 operates at Gen4 speeds. A Gen5 model may be electrically backward-compatible in some systems, but it does not turn the console’s expansion slot into a Gen5 interface. A correctly cooled Gen4x4 drive is the sensible target.

Recommended SSD options in detail
WD Black SN850X 2TB: the balanced default
Tom’s Hardware names the 2TB WD Black SN850X its best PS5 SSD pick in its 2026 guide. Its appeal is the combination of a commonly useful capacity and the Gen4 performance class expected by the console. Treat that label as a buying shortcut, not a guarantee: verify whether the listing is the bare drive or the heatsink version, and check the final assembly against Sony’s limits.
The 2TB size is appropriate when the internal console storage is already crowded but an 8TB purchase would be unnecessary. It also leaves room for large game installs and patches without making the drive’s price the dominant part of the upgrade. The guide does not establish a universal frame-rate or loading-time advantage over every other compliant 2TB SSD.
Samsung 990 Pro 2TB: an alternate fast pick
Tom’s Hardware lists the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB as an alternate/fastest pick. It is aimed at buyers who want a high-performance 2TB Gen4 drive and are willing to compare package details carefully. The 990 Pro is sold in configurations with and without cooling, so the exact SKU matters more than the family name.
For PS5 use, the important checks remain PCIe Gen4x4 operation, at least Sony’s recommended read speed, and a heatsink that keeps the assembly within the bay’s dimensions. The “fastest” designation in a buying guide should not be read as proof that every PS5 game loads faster than it would from another compliant SSD.
WD Black SN850X 8TB: maximum capacity
Tom’s Hardware lists an 8TB SN850X as its high-capacity PS5 pick. It is the logical option for a large digital library, frequent content updates or a household that shares one console. The capacity is at Sony’s stated upper limit, so verify that the advertised product is genuinely 8TB and not a smaller model in a similarly named listing.

- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
At this size, total cost and heat output deserve particular attention. Confirm the heatsink version’s dimensions and check the retailer’s return policy in case the supplied cooling structure does not fit your console revision. An 8TB purchase is unnecessary if you regularly archive completed games; it is valuable when deleting and reinstalling is the problem you are trying to eliminate.
WD_BLACK SN850P: officially licensed option
SanDisk/WD’s product infographic describes the WD_BLACK SN850P as officially licensed for PS5. It states maximum sequential figures of 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write, based on internal testing. The same document says results may vary by host, capacity and usage; those numbers are manufacturer claims, not an independent benchmark.
Official licensing can make the product’s intended console use clearer, but it does not remove the need to inspect the exact capacity and physical dimensions. Use the WD_BLACK SN850P product infographic for the stated performance and licensing information, then compare the package against Sony’s installation limits.
Heatsinks, dimensions and console-model fit
Heat dissipation is a requirement, not an optional accessory. An SSD may include a factory heatsink, or you may add a separately sold M.2 cooling structure. In either case, measure the assembled product:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Width must be no more than 25mm.
- Length must be 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm or 110mm.
- Total thickness, including any top and bottom cooling parts, must be no more than 11.25mm.
- The mounting screw and spacer must align with the selected length position.
TechRadar identifies the Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink as a separate option for a bare drive. TechRadar also cautions that a larger shield-replacement heatsink it discusses fits the original PS5 but not PS5 Slim. That distinction illustrates why “PS5 compatible” is not enough: confirm whether the accessory is designed for the original console, PS5 Slim or another revision, and compare its measured dimensions with Sony’s limits.

Installation: prepare, fit and format the drive
Follow Sony’s instructions for your specific console model. The high-level process below highlights the decisions that can cause data loss or a failed fit.
- Back up anything important on the SSD. The console formats a newly installed M.2 drive. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents, so copy any files you need before installation.
- Confirm the complete hardware. Check the SSD’s interface, capacity, length, width and thickness. Include the factory heatsink, thermal pad and any underside cover in the measurement.
- Gather the tool. Sony lists a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver for installation. Use the correct size so the mounting screw and cover screws are not damaged.
- Power down and install according to the model-specific guide. Do not work on a running console. The cover and expansion-bay procedure differs by console revision, so use Sony’s illustrated instructions at PlayStation Support.
- Seat the M.2 drive correctly. Align the M.2 Key M connector, lower the drive to the mounting point and secure it with the supplied spacer and screw. Do not force the connector or compress a heatsink against the bay cover.
- Close the console and start it. The PS5 should detect an unformatted expansion drive during startup. If it does not, shut down and recheck seating, the mounting screw and the assembly’s physical clearance.
- Format the drive in the console. Accept the on-screen formatting prompt only after confirming that no required data remains on the SSD. Formatting is destructive.
- Set the storage location if desired. After formatting, use the console’s storage controls to choose where new games and applications are installed, or move existing titles to the M.2 drive.
Sony states that M.2 storage can be used to download, update and play PS5 games. Installation therefore provides active game storage, not merely an archive. Keep the original console storage available for troubleshooting because Sony’s own recovery advice may require moving a problem title back to it.
M.2 expansion versus USB extended storage
| Capability | Internal M.2 expansion | USB extended storage |
|---|---|---|
| Store PS5 games | Yes | Yes |
| Play PS5 games directly | Yes, subject to the game and drive’s real-world behavior | No; copy the game back to console storage or M.2 storage before playing |
| Download and update PS5 games | Yes | Can hold the files, but games must be moved back for play |
| Hardware needed | PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with effective cooling | Compatible USB extended-storage device |
| Best use | Games you want installed and playable | Games you want to archive cheaply or rotate between installs |
Sony’s support information distinguishes the two roles: M.2 storage is playable, while USB extended storage can retain PS5 games but requires copying them back before play. If your priority is avoiding transfer time, internal M.2 expansion is the relevant upgrade.
Troubleshooting and recovery
The PS5 does not detect the SSD
- Power off completely and reseat the drive; a partially inserted M.2 connector can prevent detection.
- Check that the SSD is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4, not M.2 SATA.
- Confirm the drive is within Sony’s 250GB–8TB capacity range.
- Inspect the mounting position and make sure the drive is secured without being bent.
- Check that a factory heatsink or added cooling structure is not preventing the expansion-bay cover from closing.
The drive fits electrically but not physically
Re-measure the entire assembly. Sony’s 25mm width and 11.25mm thickness limits include the cooling structure. A heatsink that fits a desktop motherboard may be too wide or tall for the PS5. Do not sand, remove or stack cooling parts as an improvised fix; use a model whose documented dimensions meet the console specification.
A game behaves differently from internal storage
Move the affected game to the PS5’s internal Ultra-High Speed storage and test it there. Sony explicitly says that exceeding 5,500MB/s does not guarantee identical performance in every title. This step separates a game-specific behavior from a general installation or detection problem.
The console asks to format the drive
Formatting is expected for a new expansion drive, but it erases the drive’s contents. If the SSD contains files you need, cancel the prompt, remove or back up those files using another system, then reinstall and format it in the PS5.
A practical buying decision
| Your priority | Approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Simple, balanced upgrade | 2TB Gen4x4 model with a correctly sized integrated heatsink, such as the SN850X 2TB category identified by Tom’s Hardware. | Enough expansion for many libraries without paying for the console’s maximum capacity. |
| Maximum installed library | 4TB or 8TB Gen4x4 model, with the 8TB SN850X listed by Tom’s Hardware as a high-capacity option. | Reduces deletion and redownload cycles. |
| Official-license preference | Check the WD_BLACK SN850P in the required capacity and verify its physical dimensions. | The product is described as officially licensed for PS5, while performance figures remain manufacturer maximums. |
| Existing bare SSD | Add one PS5-compatible heatsink and measure the complete assembly. | Cooling is mandatory, and a desktop-oriented heatsink may not fit the console. |
| Lowest overall spend | Compare a 2TB or 4TB Gen4 model and the cost of a separate heatsink if needed. | Capacity and cooling configuration often affect total cost more than small differences in advertised speed. |
Bottom line
For most upgrades, start with a 2TB PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 SSD, an effective heatsink and dimensions that meet Sony’s limits. The WD Black SN850X 2TB is the clearest general recommendation from the cited 2026 buying guide; the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB is an alternate fast pick, and the WD Black SN850X 8TB suits unusually large libraries. The WD_BLACK SN850P adds an officially licensed option with manufacturer-rated speeds up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write.
