For maximum rated speed, the Samsung 9100 PRO and WD_BLACK SN8100 are leading PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 NVMe options—but they reach their published peaks only in a compatible PCIe 5.0 host. The right choice depends on your motherboard and CPU support, capacity, cooling clearance, and workload; a higher sequential-read figure alone does not guarantee faster gaming or everyday use.
Top high-performance M.2 SSDs compared
These are manufacturer-rated sequential specifications, not results from a common independent benchmark. They describe peak sequential throughput under the manufacturers’ stated conditions, not every workload or sustained transfer.
| Drive | Interface and form factor | Rated sequential read | Rated sequential write | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 9100 PRO | PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0, M.2 2280 | Up to 14,800 MB/s | Up to 13,400 MB/s | Samsung advises checking that the host system supports PCIe 5.0. Heatsink and bare-drive versions are available; verify the exact SKU and clearance. Samsung product specifications |
| WD_BLACK SN8100 | PCIe Gen 5 x4, NVMe 2.0, M.2 2280 | Up to 14,900 MB/s | Up to 14,000 MB/s for 2 TB and 4 TB; up to 11,000 MB/s for 1 TB | SanDisk says maximum speeds require a PCIe Gen 5 NVMe M.2 host. Heatsink and non-heatsink variants are documented; confirm capacity and SKU. SanDisk data sheet |
The SN8100’s 14,900 MB/s read rating is 100 MB/s above the 9100 PRO’s 14,800 MB/s rating, while the Samsung’s published write ceiling is 13,400 MB/s. That narrow comparison does not establish which drive is faster in a particular application: the SN8100’s write rating varies by capacity, and these manufacturer peaks are not directly comparable to independent review benchmarks.

Choose the Samsung 9100 PRO if its configuration suits your build
It is a strong candidate when you want a high-rated PCIe 5.0 drive and the capacity and heatsink configuration you need are available for your system. Check Samsung’s specifications for the exact product variant and verify that the target M.2 slot can operate at PCIe 5.0.

Choose the WD_BLACK SN8100 if its capacity-specific specifications fit
Its published read ceiling is 14,900 MB/s, and its write rating depends on capacity: up to 14,000 MB/s for 2 TB and 4 TB, and up to 11,000 MB/s for 1 TB. Compare the capacity you intend to buy rather than applying the largest write number to the whole range.
For gaming, do not buy on peak sequential speed alone
Sequential throughput is only one part of SSD performance. Game loading also depends on the game, system, and access pattern; the evidence here does not establish a universal gaming advantage or dramatically shorter load times for either model. Independent gaming reviews, such as PC Gamer’s SSD coverage, assess drives in specific test configurations, so treat their results as workload-specific rather than a guarantee for your PC.

Check compatibility before you buy
M.2 describes the drive’s physical form, not its protocol or speed. An M.2 socket may support SATA, NVMe, or a particular PCIe generation, so confirm the details for the exact slot you plan to use.
- Verify the slot and generation: Check the motherboard manual for NVMe support and whether the slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4. A Gen 5 drive installed in a compatible lower-generation slot can work at the supported lower rate, but it will not deliver its Gen 5 peak.
- Check CPU and lane allocation: Motherboard and CPU support determine what the target slot can provide. Consult the manual for lane sharing that could affect graphics cards, other M.2 drives, or expansion slots.
- Match the physical fit: Both drives are M.2 2280, but heatsink-equipped models can be thicker than bare drives. Compare the exact SKU dimensions with the slot, case, and any motherboard cover.
- Choose one suitable cooling arrangement: If the board’s M.2 heatsink is intended for the drive configuration, use it as directed. Do not place a motherboard cover over an integrated SSD heatsink unless the hardware makers confirm that fit and cooling arrangement are suitable.
For a PlayStation 5 installation, check Sony’s current SSD capacity, dimensions, heatsink, and performance requirements before choosing either model. The product information cited here does not establish that every capacity and heatsink variant meets the console’s current requirements.

Look beyond sequential read and write ratings
Peak sequential specifications are useful for identifying the interface’s ceiling, especially for large, contiguous transfers. They do not show how a drive behaves across every task. Before deciding between otherwise compatible drives, look for credible, clearly described testing that matches your use.
- Sustained large-file transfers: Check performance over longer writes and behavior after any write cache is exhausted. A short peak result may not represent a multi-gigabyte transfer.
- Random I/O and application workloads: These can be more relevant to operating systems, software, and game assets than a maximum sequential rate.
- Thermals under load: Review results should identify the test workload, cooling setup, and whether the drive throttled. Cooling needs depend on the drive, slot airflow, and workload; an aftermarket heatsink is not automatically necessary in every build.
- Capacity, endurance, and warranty: Compare the exact capacity variant’s published endurance and warranty terms, then consider how much usable space your games, projects, and scratch files require.
- Price per usable terabyte: Compare current prices for the same region and date. Prices and availability change, and no single regional price is established here.
- Power in compact systems: Power consumption may matter in a small or battery-powered system, but assess it using platform-specific information rather than assuming a universal impact.
For independent rankings and test context, TechRadar’s SSD roundup presents editorial comparisons and testing claims. Review its methods and tested configuration; its measured results should not be treated as the same kind of figure as a manufacturer’s maximum sequential rating.

How to make the final decision
- Identify your slot: Use the motherboard manual to confirm the M.2 socket supports NVMe and determine its PCIe generation and lane allocation.
- Set the capacity: Choose the amount of storage your workload needs, then compare each drive’s specifications at that capacity—especially the SN8100’s capacity-dependent write rating.
- Resolve clearance and cooling: Decide whether you will use a bare drive with the board’s heatsink or an integrated-heatsink variant, and verify dimensions before ordering.
- Compare relevant tests and total value: Use workload-specific independent results for your priorities, then weigh warranty, endurance, current local price, and usable capacity against the rated speed.
Samsung publishes up to 14,800 MB/s sequential read and 13,400 MB/s sequential write for the 9100 PRO; SanDisk lists up to 14,900 MB/s sequential read for the SN8100, with write speed varying by capacity. Both are PCIe 5.0-class choices, but realizing their top rated throughput requires a compatible host and a build that accommodates the chosen drive.
