You can build flavor without adding table salt by using herbs and spices, garlic and onion, citrus juice, vinegar, or a salt-free seasoning blend. The best choice depends on what you are cooking: dill and lemon suit fish, while rosemary and thyme work well with chicken. If you buy a blend, check its ingredient list and Nutrition Facts panel—“salt-free” does not by itself tell you how much sodium is in the food you prepare.

For the most control, start with seasonings that suit the dish, add them as you cook, and taste before adjusting. A ready-made blend is convenient, while individual spices or a homemade mix let you choose exactly what goes in. Either way, the rest of the recipe matters: most dietary sodium comes from packaged and prepared foods, not just salt shaken in at home.

What to use instead of salt

Salt-free cooking is not flavor-free cooking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends reducing or replacing salt while cooking, and its guidance, along with recommendations from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, points to garlic, citrus juice, spices, herbs, and salt-free blends as ways to add flavor.

Choose a seasoning to complement the food rather than reaching for the same blend every time. Fresh lemon or lime juice can brighten vegetables, fish, or chicken; vinegar can add a sharp note; garlic and onion contribute a savory base; and dried or fresh herbs and spices give a dish a more distinctive profile. You can use one flavoring or combine several, then taste and adjust as the dish cooks.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Think of these ingredients as different tools, not interchangeable salt substitutes. Citrus juice adds a fresh, tart quality, while vinegar gives a sharper acidity. Garlic and onion bring a savory foundation; herbs and spices contribute their own aromas and flavors. If a dish tastes dull, try a fitting complementary flavor—for example, lemon with a fish seasoning or garlic with an Italian-style mix—instead of automatically adding salt.

Salt is also only one possible source of sodium in a meal. A dish made without table salt may still contain sodium from packaged broth, sauces, seasoning mixes, or other prepared ingredients. If you are reducing sodium for health reasons, consider the whole recipe and follow any individualized advice you have received.

Seasonings that pair with common foods

The combinations below are practical starting points from MedlinePlus, reproducing pairings from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s “Use Herbs and Spices Instead of Salt.” They are suggestions, not a ranking: pick a flavor you like and adjust to the dish.

Food Herbs, spices, and other flavorings
Carrots Cinnamon, cloves, dill, ginger, marjoram, nutmeg, rosemary, or sage
Corn Cumin, curry powder, paprika, or parsley
Green beans Dill, lemon juice, marjoram, oregano, tarragon, or thyme
Tomatoes Basil, bay leaf, dill, marjoram, onion, oregano, parsley, or pepper
Fish Curry powder, dill, dry mustard, lemon juice, paprika, or pepper
Chicken Poultry seasoning, rosemary, sage, tarragon, or thyme
Pork Garlic, onion, sage, pepper, or oregano
Beef Marjoram, nutmeg, sage, or thyme

Use the pairings as a starting point

For a simple change, select one herb or spice from the row for your ingredient and add it while cooking. For a brighter taste, pair an herb with lemon juice, as in the green-bean and fish suggestions. If you are making a dish with several main ingredients, choose seasonings that suit the whole dish; for example, tomatoes and onions both appear in the recommended tomato pairings.

You do not need to use every flavor listed for an ingredient. Choose one or two to keep the character of the dish clear, or combine a savory flavor with a bright one. For example, the fish suggestions include both dill and lemon juice, while the green-bean list offers herbs as well as lemon. These are useful routes to try, not fixed recipes or measured formulas.

For a mixed dish, start with the main ingredient and then consider what else is in the pan, pot, or sauce. Tomato and onion can share a seasoning direction; a poultry seasoning or an herb from the chicken list can guide a chicken dish that includes vegetables. If you are cooking for more than one person, adding flavor in stages makes it easier to stop when the balance suits you.

Ready-made blends, individual spices, or a homemade mix?

A packaged blend saves measuring and combines flavors for a particular style of food. Individual herbs and spices give you more control over flavor and ingredients, while a homemade mix lets you combine familiar pantry staples without relying on a commercial formula. None is automatically the best option for every cook; choose based on convenience, ingredient control, and the label.

Option Useful when What to check
Packaged salt-free blend You want a ready-to-use combination for a dish or cooking style. Read the current ingredient list and Nutrition Facts. Check whether salt or other sodium-bearing ingredients are present, and note sodium per serving and serving size.
Individual dried herbs and spices You want to customize flavor or control exactly what goes into the dish. Check the package information, especially if you are following a sodium limit; seasonings and mixtures are not necessarily sodium-free.
Homemade mix You already have suitable spices and want a flexible blend without a purchased premix. Use the ingredients you want and avoid adding salt. The amount of sodium in the finished food still depends on its other ingredients.

A useful comparison between blends is not simply which one claims to be salt-free. Consider the intended dish and flavor profile, the ingredients, sodium per serving, the serving size, and how much you normally use. A product may be convenient, but a mix of separate spices gives you more control over each flavor and makes it easier to leave out an ingredient you do not want.

There is no single taste winner among brands. Recipes and formulations can differ, and product labels can change. If you have a specific sodium limit, compare products using their current Nutrition Facts panels rather than relying on a product name or an old label. If you cook often, keeping individual herbs and spices on hand can make it easier to adapt the blend to the meal.

Three mix ideas from the VA

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Nutrition and Food Services’ June 2025 “Low Sodium Cooking” handout gives these simple combinations. It does not specify proportions, so combine them to suit your taste rather than treating them as fixed recipes:

  • Italian-style: onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, and basil.
  • Stir-fry: onion powder, garlic powder, ground ginger, and black pepper.
  • Fish: lemon pepper, rosemary, and black pepper.

These examples show how a mix can be built around a cooking style or main ingredient. They are not prescribed recipes, and you can alter the balance to suit your preferences. If one ingredient is already part of the dish, you may choose to emphasize another flavor instead.

For a store-bought blend, the VA advises checking that salt is not listed as an ingredient and checking the Nutrition Facts for added sodium. A product described as “no salt” or “salt-free” still warrants a label check; packaging and formulations can change.

How to check a seasoning label for sodium

Use both the ingredient list and the Nutrition Facts panel. The ingredient list can reveal salt or sodium-containing additives; the panel tells you the amount of sodium in a stated serving. Compare the serving size with how much you actually use. If you use more than one serving, the sodium contribution rises accordingly.

  1. Find the serving size. Check whether it matches the amount you typically shake, scoop, or mix into the food.
  2. Read sodium per serving. Compare the milligrams listed with your needs and with other options. MedlinePlus also advises noting how many servings are in the package.
  3. Use the % Daily Value as a quick guide. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s general guide says 5% Daily Value or less per serving is low, while 20% or more is high.
  4. Scan the ingredients. Look for salt and other sources of sodium. FDA notes that monosodium glutamate (MSG), baking soda, sodium nitrite, and sodium benzoate contain sodium.
  5. Consider the whole dish. A salt-free seasoning cannot make a meal low in sodium if other packaged ingredients contribute substantial amounts.

FDA sets the sodium Daily Value at less than 2,300 mg per day. That figure is a general labeling reference, not an individualized prescription. FDA also says that more than 70% of dietary sodium comes from packaged and prepared foods rather than salt added during cooking or at the table. Consequently, changing your seasoning is useful, but checking the other ingredients matters too.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

For a practical comparison, first use the serving size printed on each label, then compare sodium per serving and the ingredient list. If the product is a blend you sprinkle freely, check whether the label’s serving size is close to your usual amount. If it is not, calculate based on what you actually add rather than treating the printed value as the total sodium in your meal.

The words on the front of a package are not a substitute for these checks. “Salt-free” or “no salt” does not necessarily settle how much sodium is in a serving, whether the product contains a sodium-bearing ingredient, or how much sodium the rest of the meal provides. Read the current package, especially when buying the product again after a formula or package change.

Salt-free seasoning is not the same as a potassium salt substitute

Herbs, spices, garlic, citrus, and salt-free blends are different from salt substitutes made with potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is used as an alternative to sodium chloride, but it is not appropriate for everyone. The American Heart Association cautions that kidney disease and some medications can affect potassium levels; ask a healthcare professional whether a potassium-based substitute is suitable for you, particularly if you have kidney disease or take medication that affects potassium.

Potassium chloride can taste similar to sodium chloride, but the American Heart Association notes that it may develop a bitter aftertaste when heated. That taste issue is separate from the health question: do not assume a potassium-based product is safe just because it is sold as a salt substitute or used in place of table salt.

People with chronic kidney disease may need nutrition advice tailored to their health and treatment. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends individualized guidance for CKD, including advice from a dietitian when appropriate. Its guidance supports using herbs and sodium-free seasonings in place of salt, but that does not mean every salt substitute or eating pattern is right for every person.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute lists 4,700 mg of potassium per day as a target within the DASH eating plan. This is a plan-specific target—not a general recommendation to increase potassium or use potassium chloride. Do not apply a DASH figure to your own needs without considering your health circumstances.

A practical way to season a dish without adding salt

  1. Start with the main ingredient. Use the pairing table to choose an herb, spice, or citrus flavor suited to the food.
  2. Check the other ingredients. If you are using a packaged broth, sauce, seasoning, or other prepared ingredient, read its sodium information as well.
  3. Add flavor in stages. Start with the chosen seasoning, taste as you cook, and adjust. If the dish tastes flat, try a complementary flavor such as lemon juice, garlic, onion, or another herb rather than assuming it needs salt.
  4. Keep track of blends you like. For a homemade mix, write down its ingredients and proportions so you can make it again. For a packaged product, recheck the label when buying it because the current package is the relevant one.

This process works whether you start with a single herb or a prepared blend. A blend gives you a quick flavor direction; individual seasonings let you adjust that direction more precisely. In either case, tasting as you go helps you avoid adding more of a flavor than the dish needs.

If a meal includes several prepared components, check them separately. A salt-free mix only addresses the seasoning you add; it does not remove sodium already present in a sauce, broth, or packaged ingredient. That distinction is especially useful when a recipe combines a homemade seasoning with convenience foods.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “no salt added” means no sodium. Sodium may come from ingredients other than table salt, including some additives; check both the package and the rest of the recipe.
  • Ignoring serving size. The sodium number applies to the serving stated on the label, not necessarily the amount you use.
  • Using potassium chloride without checking whether it is safe for you. Ask a healthcare professional if kidney disease or medication could affect potassium levels.
  • Expecting one blend to suit every food. Choose seasonings to match the ingredient; a fish mix and a blend for vegetables need not have the same flavor profile.
  • Focusing only on the shaker. Since FDA says more than 70% of dietary sodium comes from packaged and prepared foods, a home-cooked meal’s sodium may depend more on its broth, sauce, or other prepared components than on the added seasoning.
  • Treating a general daily value as a personal target. The FDA’s 2,300 mg Daily Value is a labeling reference. Personal advice may differ, so use guidance from your healthcare professional if you have a sodium or potassium-related health concern.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best seasonings to use instead of salt?

There is no single best choice for every dish. Garlic, citrus juice, herbs, spices, vinegar, and salt-free blends all add flavor without adding table salt. Match the flavor to the food: MedlinePlus lists dill and lemon juice for fish, rosemary or thyme for chicken, and basil or oregano for tomatoes, among other pairings.

How can I tell whether a seasoning blend is low in sodium?

Check the serving size and sodium amount on the Nutrition Facts panel, then read the ingredient list for salt and sodium-containing additives. FDA’s general guide considers 5% Daily Value or less per serving low and 20% or more high. Compare the labeled serving with the amount you actually use.

Does “salt-free” mean a seasoning has no sodium?

Not necessarily. FDA notes that ingredients such as MSG, baking soda, sodium nitrite, and sodium benzoate contain sodium. Also, the rest of the recipe may add sodium even if the seasoning blend itself is salt-free. Check the current package and the other prepared ingredients in the dish.

Are herbs and spices better than a premade blend?

They offer different advantages. A premade blend is convenient and can provide a ready-to-use flavor profile; separate herbs and spices give you more control over flavor and ingredients. A homemade mix is another option. Compare labels when buying blends, and choose the approach that fits your cooking and sodium needs.

Can I use potassium chloride instead of salt?

Not without considering whether it is suitable for you. The American Heart Association says kidney disease and some medications can affect potassium levels, so ask a healthcare professional before using a potassium-based salt substitute if either may apply. Potassium chloride is different from a blend made with herbs and spices.

What is an easy salt-free seasoning mix to make at home?

The VA’s June 2025 “Low Sodium Cooking” handout suggests an Italian-style mix of onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, and basil; a stir-fry mix of onion powder, garlic powder, ground ginger, and black pepper; and a fish mix of lemon pepper, rosemary, and black pepper. The handout does not give proportions, so combine them to taste and check the sodium information on ingredients you purchase.

To cook without adding salt, choose herbs, spices, garlic, onion, citrus, vinegar, or a salt-free blend that fits the dish.
