For a compact Docker home server that needs broad compatibility with conventional 64-bit images, start by comparing complete mini PCs built around Intel’s N100 processor. Consider a Raspberry Pi 5 when your required images support Arm64 and its board-style expansion suits your setup. If you expect more CPU-heavy tasks or concurrent work, an eight-core Intel i3-N305 system is another option—but its processor has a higher listed TDP than the N100. None of those processor ratings tells you how much electricity a complete server uses at the wall.
What “low-power” should mean for a Docker server
Choose for the server’s actual workload, not for the smallest number printed beside a processor. A host spends much of its life idle or lightly loaded, but it also needs enough memory, storage, network capacity, and CPU headroom to run the services you care about. A low processor TDP is one useful specification; it is not an idle-power measurement, a whole-system power limit, or proof that one server will use less electricity than another.
A Docker host is a complete system. Its motherboard, memory, SSD, firmware, cooling, power supply, connected drives, and network hardware all affect power use. Two mini PCs with the same processor can therefore differ in features and wall draw. A board’s power-input requirement is also not the same thing as its measured consumption.
For a useful comparison, evaluate the same kind of complete system in at least two states: settled idle and a representative workload. Keep the configuration and measurement method consistent. If no comparable wall-meter results exist for the exact systems you are considering, treat power as an unknown rather than assigning a ranking based on CPU specifications.

Compare the three hardware paths
| Option | Published processor details | Architecture and expansion | Best fit | What the specifications do not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intel N100 mini PC | Four cores and four threads; turbo up to 3.40 GHz; 6 W TDP; Quick Sync Video; 64-bit support. Intel’s processor page lists a maximum of 16 GB memory, dependent on memory type. | A compact x86-oriented mini PC; features such as memory slots, storage interfaces, and network ports depend on the exact system. | A modest Docker stack where conventional x86 image availability and a compact, finished host matter. | Whole-system idle or loaded draw, finished-system memory support, included storage, port configuration, cooling, price, and warranty. Intel’s N100 specifications describe the processor, not a particular mini PC. |
| Intel Core i3-N305 system | Eight cores and eight threads; 15 W TDP in Intel’s comparison with the N100. | System-specific. Verify the same chassis, memory, drive, and network details as you would for an N100 mini PC. | More simultaneous services, compilation, or other CPU-heavy work that justifies considering more cores. | Whole-system power, performance per watt for your workload, and the behavior of any particular finished system. Intel’s processor comparison lists processor specifications, not a controlled system-power test. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | Broadcom BCM2712, 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76; memory configurations from 1 GB through 16 GB. | Gigabit Ethernet, microSD, and PCIe 2.0 x1. M.2 or other PCIe peripherals require a separate adapter, such as an M.2 HAT. | A workload whose required applications and container images support Arm64, especially when the board’s expansion approach fits the build. | Compatibility of every image or application, measured board consumption, and the full cost or compatibility of the power supply, storage, cooling, and adapters. The Raspberry Pi 5 product brief lists a 5V/5A USB-C input requirement; that is not a wall-power result. |
Intel’s figures make the N100 the clearest starting point for a modest x86-oriented host: it has four cores and a listed 6 W TDP. The i3-N305 doubles the listed core and thread counts to eight and has a 15 W TDP. That is a processor-specification comparison—not evidence that an N305 mini PC will draw a fixed amount more at idle, or that either complete system is more efficient under your containers.
Choose based on image architecture before buying
A Docker-capable processor does not guarantee that every container image you want is available for its architecture. Many images publish builds for several architectures; others may support only a subset, or may rely on a dependency that does not work on Arm. Check the documentation and image manifest for each service you plan to run, including any database, plugin, or helper container—not just the main application.
When an N100 mini PC is the simpler choice
Choose the N100 path if your stack depends on x86-specific images or software, or if you want a conventional mini PC with the possibility of internal SSD and memory upgrades. Intel lists a 64-bit instruction set, VT-x, and VT-d for the processor, but platform feature compatibility still depends on the system vendor’s configuration. Confirm that the finished PC supports the features and operating-system setup you need.

When the Raspberry Pi 5 is a good fit
Choose the Pi 5 only after confirming that the required images and applications support Arm64, or that you have a maintainable alternative for anything that does not. Its official product brief documents a 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor, several memory configurations, Gigabit Ethernet, microSD, and PCIe 2.0 x1. Those specifications make it a real Docker-host candidate, but they do not establish compatibility for every image in a personal stack.
For each image, look for explicit Arm64 or multi-architecture support in the project’s documentation or image metadata. If an image is x86-only, do not assume that running it on Arm will be seamless. Emulation or a community build may be possible in some cases, but it can add setup, compatibility, maintenance, or performance trade-offs; verify the particular project before making the hardware choice depend on it.
Estimate the workload the host must handle
Make a short inventory before comparing processors. Write down the services you plan to keep running, whether they are CPU-intensive, how much memory their documentation recommends, what data they retain, and whether they need direct access to local storage or devices. Container count alone is not a useful sizing target: a few resource-heavy services can demand more than many lightweight ones.

- Always-on services: Home automation, DNS, dashboards, and small utility services may spend most of their time waiting for requests. Prioritize the whole system’s measured idle use, adequate memory, and reliable storage.
- Concurrent services: If several containers regularly process requests at once, compare available cores and memory rather than choosing solely by TDP. The N305’s additional cores are relevant only if your workload can use them.
- Periodic heavy work: Compilation, media processing, indexing, or scheduled jobs can create brief or sustained CPU demand. Consider how often those tasks run and whether delaying them is acceptable before paying for more headroom.
- Data-heavy services: Databases and file-oriented applications need storage that fits their capacity and reliability requirements. Check drive type, interface, and upgrade options on the exact host, and maintain a separate backup plan.
Do not translate a processor’s core count into a promised number of containers. Container count depends on the applications, their resource limits, request patterns, data, and concurrency. If you already have a stack, use its observed resource use as a baseline; if you do not, leave room for growth without treating an arbitrary container count as a guarantee.
Check the exact system, not just its processor
“N100 mini PC” describes a processor class, not a single standardized machine. Before ordering, inspect the manufacturer’s specifications for the precise model and configuration. Retail listings may vary by memory, storage, operating-system license, or regional bundle, so verify what is actually included.
Memory and upgradeability
Intel’s N100 page lists a processor maximum of 16 GB, dependent on memory type, but that does not guarantee that every finished N100 system accepts 16 GB or allows an upgrade. Confirm the system’s supported capacity, memory type, number of slots, and whether memory is soldered. For the Pi 5, choose among the available board memory configurations based on the stack’s needs; the board’s configuration is not the same as an upgradeable mini-PC memory slot.

Boot and data storage
For a mini PC, check whether the system has an M.2 slot, a 2.5-inch drive bay, or both; identify the supported drive size and interface, and find out whether a drive is included. Do not infer a slot or capacity from the processor name. For a Pi 5, the brief lists microSD and PCIe 2.0 x1; a PCIe/M.2 storage device needs a separate compatible adapter. Confirm the adapter, drive, mounting, and any required power or cooling accessories as a complete combination.
Network ports and physical fit
Check the number, speed, and type of Ethernet ports if the server will connect to a switch, router, or separate network. The Pi 5 brief specifies Gigabit Ethernet. For a mini PC, use the exact model’s specification rather than assuming all N100 systems have the same NICs. Also consider whether the enclosure can sit where you intend to run it, whether cables and drives fit, and whether its cooling arrangement is suitable for continuous service.
Cooling, noise, and support
Low-power hardware can still produce fan noise, and a small case can affect cooling behavior. Look for the exact system’s cooling design and support information, and check the seller’s return terms and manufacturer warranty for your region. These details are model- and seller-dependent; the processor and board specifications above do not establish them. For a Pi build, account for a suitable power supply, storage, cooling if needed for your environment, and any expansion adapter rather than treating the board as a complete PC bundle.

How to compare real power use
Use wall-meter data for the exact complete systems you are considering. A processor TDP is not a substitute for that measurement. Neither Intel’s 6 W N100 rating nor the Pi 5’s 5V/5A USB-C input requirement states the host’s idle consumption. The latter describes the specified power input, not a measured draw.
- Match the configuration. Record the processor, memory, drive, power supply, attached USB devices, and network setup. A measurement without those details is hard to apply to your prospective build.
- Measure at the wall. Use a plug-in meter that reports power for the complete host and its power supply. Do not compare a board-level reading for one system with a wall reading for another.
- Record settled idle. Use the same operating system and services, allow startup activity to finish, and note the conditions under which the reading was taken. Keep network and peripheral connections consistent.
- Run a representative workload. Test the services and activity you actually expect, such as simultaneous requests or a scheduled job. Record the workload and duration alongside the reading rather than presenting it as a universal maximum.
- Compare like with like. Use the same meter method and comparable system configurations. If a source does not identify the full configuration and conditions, treat its number as insufficient for a precise ranking.
Once you have a credible average wall-power figure, you can estimate energy over a period using: average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours. For example, to estimate a monthly total, use the measured average and the actual hours in that month. Multiply the result by your electricity tariff to estimate the energy charge; the tariff and any fixed charges are separate from the hardware measurement.
No comparable primary-source wall-power results are established here for these complete systems. That means the available specifications support a shortlist, not a measured winner for idle use or a particular workload. Avoid claims such as “6 W idle” based on the N100’s processor TDP.
A practical selection sequence
- List the services and images. Note each service’s required architecture, storage, and expected CPU or memory demand. Resolve any x86-only dependency before considering an Arm board.
- Choose the platform class. Start with an N100 mini PC for modest x86-oriented workloads; consider the Pi 5 if Arm64 support is confirmed and its board expansion is suitable; consider an N305-class system if concurrent or CPU-heavy work merits more cores.
- Verify the exact configuration. Check memory support and included capacity, drive slots and supported sizes, Ethernet ports, cooling, power supply, accessories, warranty, and regional availability with the system maker or seller.
- Compare whole-system evidence. Prefer measurements that identify the full configuration and idle or workload conditions. If comparable data is unavailable, do not claim a power winner; decide based on confirmed fit and make measurement part of your own evaluation.
- Plan for data and maintenance. Confirm where persistent container data will live, how it will be backed up, and how you will restore it. A low-power host is not a backup, and a convenient storage interface does not by itself provide data protection.
Which option should you buy?
For most readers who want a small, conventional x86 Docker host, an N100 mini PC is the best place to begin comparing systems. It has a documented four-core, four-thread processor with a 6 W TDP, 64-bit support, and Quick Sync Video, while leaving the choice of memory, storage, ports, and cooling to the finished-system maker. Buy only after checking those exact system details; the N100 name alone does not specify the machine or its wall power.
Choose a Raspberry Pi 5 when its Arm64 compatibility is sufficient for your stack and you are comfortable assembling the storage and expansion setup. Choose an i3-N305 system when the extra listed cores are relevant to sustained or concurrent CPU work. In all three cases, use complete-system measurements—not component ratings—to answer which host actually uses less power in your environment.
