For most homes with a sub-gigabit internet plan, the TP-Link Archer AX55 is the strongest low-cost single-router pick: it combines Wi-Fi 6 with better-supported performance and range than the cheaper Archer AX10. Choose the AX10 if the lowest upfront cost matters most; consider the dual-band Wi-Fi 7 Archer BE230 if you need 2.5Gbps wired ports. If your main problem is dead zones across a larger home, look at mesh instead of expecting one inexpensive router to cover every room.
Which low-cost router should you choose?
| Router | Best for | Key tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Archer AX55 | Most homes needing an affordable Wi-Fi 6 router | Gigabit-class ports limit wired throughput to below multi-gigabit speeds |
| TP-Link Archer AX10 | A tighter budget and everyday Wi-Fi 6 use | RTINGS ranks it below the AX55 as its main budget pick |
| TP-Link Archer BE230 | Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5Gbps wired connections | Dual-band only; it has no 6GHz band, and its range is weaker than the AX55 according to RTINGS |
Best overall low-cost router: TP-Link Archer AX55
The AX55 is the best-supported default choice in this group. RTINGS names it its best budget router in its 2026 guide, and Tom’s Guide calls it its best budget Wi-Fi 6 router. It is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports, and USB 3.0, according to Tom’s Guide.
Tom’s Guide measured 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet and 288.4 Mbps at 50 feet in its 2026 test. RTINGS reports that the AX55 reached about 750 Mbps at close range in its own testing and remained useful at distances approaching 100 feet. Those results come from separate review environments, so they should not be treated as directly comparable or as a promise of the speed you will get at home.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The main compromise is wired speed: the AX55 has no multi-gigabit port. It is a sensible fit for many households on sub-gigabit broadband, but a plan faster than gigabit or a wired device that needs more than gigabit throughput points toward a router with 2.5Gbps ports.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Cheaper alternative: TP-Link Archer AX10
If the AX55 costs more than you want to spend, the Archer AX10 is the lower-cost Wi-Fi 6 option to consider. RTINGS calls it its best cheap router and reports up to 600 Mbps at close range in its tests, with useful performance around 100 feet. RTINGS still places the AX55 above the AX10 for its main budget recommendation, so treat the AX10 as the budget fallback rather than the stronger all-around pick.

When the Wi-Fi 7 Archer BE230 makes sense
The Archer BE230 is a conditional upgrade, not automatically a better router for every home. TechRadar describes it as a dual-band BE3600 Wi-Fi 7 router with two 2.5Gbps ports and three gigabit ports. It has no 6GHz band: Wi-Fi 7 branding does not mean this model includes every available band.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
The faster ports can matter if your internet plan exceeds gigabit or you connect a desktop, NAS, or other wired device that can use 2.5GbE. RTINGS says the BE230 offers slightly higher top speeds and a faster WAN port than the AX55, but the AX55 has significantly better range and remains more cost-effective for most uses. If your priority is signal across a home rather than multi-gigabit wired connections, the newer Wi-Fi generation alone is not a reason to choose the BE230.
TechRadar reported a $79.99 Amazon offer on August 25, 2026. That is a dated offer, not a current price; check the price in your region at the time of purchase.
When to choose mesh instead of a single router
If one router leaves dead zones in distant rooms or on another floor, the problem may be coverage rather than the router’s headline speed. Walls, floor layout, router placement, interference, and the devices connecting to the network all affect real-world range. Review measurements help compare products, but they cannot guarantee coverage in a particular home.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The TP-Link Deco XE75 is a Wi-Fi 6E mesh system that Tom’s Guide identifies as an alternative for larger homes. Mesh uses multiple units to distribute coverage and is a different category and price tier from a cheap standalone router; consider it when coverage across the home is the priority, not as a direct single-router bargain pick.

-
Match the ports to your internet plan
For a sub-gigabit plan, gigabit-class WAN and LAN ports like those on the AX55 are typically a reasonable match. If your broadband or wired devices can exceed gigabit, look for 2.5Gbps ports, as on the BE230.
-
Decide whether range or speed is the constraint
For a home that needs coverage from one central router, the AX55 has stronger range evidence than the BE230 in RTINGS’ comparison. For a home with persistent dead zones, consider mesh rather than assuming that a faster Wi-Fi standard will solve the layout problem.

Choose the Wi-Fi generation with realistic expectations
Wi-Fi 6 is adequate for many households, particularly with sub-gigabit plans. The BE230 adds Wi-Fi 7, but it is dual-band and lacks 6GHz, so do not assume it offers every Wi-Fi 7 band or capability.
-
Count the connections and features you will use
Check how many wired devices need LAN ports, whether a USB port for sharing matters, and whether you may expand coverage with mesh. The AX55 has four gigabit LAN ports and USB 3.0 according to Tom’s Guide.
