For the closest free, fast team-shooter substitute, start with THE FINALS. Choose Counter-Strike 2 or VALORANT if you prefer tactical, round-based matches; Apex Legends for squad battle royale; and Splitgate 2 for portal-powered movement. Battlefield 2042 is the paid option when you want larger military maps, vehicles and a traditional multiplayer structure, but check its current regional sale price before buying.
All of these games let you avoid buying a new Call of Duty, yet they are not interchangeable. Their match formats, pacing, hardware demands, monetization and amount of realism differ substantially. The guide below matches each game to the type of Call of Duty experience you are trying to replace.

1. THE FINALS: the closest free fast-action replacement
THE FINALS is the strongest first choice when what you miss is Call of Duty’s immediate, high-speed multiplayer action. It is a free-to-play, physics-driven first-person shooter set in televised competitions. Instead of fighting across static military lanes, teams compete in arenas whose structures can be damaged or destroyed. A wall that was safe a moment ago can become an open firing angle, and a building can stop being useful cover after sustained attacks.

Its destruction and physics are central, not cosmetic. You must watch for collapsing cover, newly opened angles and routes created by teammates or opponents. That makes the game less predictable than a conventional military shooter. Minimum PC specification
Steam lists Windows 10 or later in 64-bit, 12 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, and an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti or AMD RX 580 as the minimum configuration. These are platform-listed minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality. If your system is below any one of those items, expect possible launch, performance or stability problems rather than assuming the game will run acceptably.
Who should choose it
Pick THE FINALS if you want free, respawn-friendly action and are comfortable with a more dynamic arena than a realistic military map. Its in-game purchases do not change the fact that the base game is free, but you should still review the store and battle-pass options if you want to keep spending at zero.
2. Counter-Strike 2: the best free choice for tactical rounds
Counter-Strike 2 is free to play and is the clearest alternative for someone who values precision, utility and decision-making over constant respawns. Matches are divided into rounds. A life is valuable, weapons and equipment are purchased through an economy, and the result of one round affects the resources available in the next.

Call of Duty’s familiar public modes usually let you respawn, change loadouts and re-enter the action quickly. Counter-Strike 2 asks you to preserve your life, communicate about utility and read the opposing team’s economy. A single missed peek can remove you from the round, so the pace alternates between bursts of action and careful preparation.

- Choose it if you enjoy recoil control, crosshair placement and learning repeatable angles.
- Choose it if the satisfaction of winning a round through a better plan matters more than character powers.
- Choose another game if you specifically need continuous respawns, killstreak-style momentum or large military vehicles.
Cost and hardware check
The base game is free, but you should confirm the current Steam system requirements for your processor, memory and graphics hardware before downloading. Competitive performance is sensitive to frame-rate consistency and input latency, so meeting a listed minimum does not automatically mean the settings will feel ideal.
3. VALORANT: a tactical option for modest PCs
VALORANT combines round-based objectives and gunplay with agents who bring distinct abilities. That makes it a better replacement for the deliberate side of Call of Duty than for arcade respawn playlists. You win by coordinating attacks, holding sites, managing utility and taking favorable fights rather than by relying on a continuous stream of eliminations.
Hardware requirement that matters
Riot publishes minimum and recommended PC specifications. For systems using dedicated or discrete graphics, the published minimum includes at least 1 GB of VRAM. Check the complete current specification before installation because the graphics-memory figure is only one part of the requirement.
How agent abilities change the match
Abilities can block vision, gather information, control space or help a team enter a defended site. They do not turn the game into a hero shooter where gun skill is irrelevant; accurate shooting remains essential. They do, however, add layers that are absent from a conventional military simulation. Learning a small number of agents well is usually more useful than trying to master every ability immediately.

When VALORANT is the right low-cost pick
Use it when you want a free competitive shooter that can run on relatively modest hardware, provided your PC meets the current published requirements. Select it over Counter-Strike 2 if you prefer character tools and ability-driven site takes; select Counter-Strike 2 if you want a purer economy-and-utility format.
4. Apex Legends: the free squad battle-royale alternative
Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle-royale shooter in which legendary characters with powerful abilities team up. It is the best match here for a reader who wants squad play, a large traversal space and the tension of surviving through a match rather than repeatedly spawning into a compact arena.
What you do in a typical match
- Choose a legend and enter a squad-based drop.
- Search locations for weapons, armor and supplies.
- Move as the playable area changes and decide when to fight, rotate or disengage.
- Use your legend’s abilities to create an advantage in a team fight.
- Survive longer squads and the final engagements to win.
The exact modes and balance change over time, but the core distinction remains: a battle royale gives each fight more consequence than a standard respawn playlist. A poor early engagement can leave your squad short on resources or force a difficult recovery.

Trade-offs
Apex Legends requires more time between engagements than a small-map team deathmatch because looting, rotating and positioning are part of the match. It is available on PC through the EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and the base game is listed at $0.00 on the publisher page. Optional in-game purchases mean free download does not equal a completely purchase-free experience.

5. Splitgate 2: choose this for portal-powered movement
Splitgate and Splitgate 2 are free portal shooters. The original game is described as having player-controlled portals, more than 15 modes and more than 20 maps; the sequel presents teleportation across maps as a core part of its identity. If you want a game that changes how you think about movement and map control, this is the most distinctive option in the group.
How portals alter familiar FPS habits
A normal shooter asks you to move through doors, corridors and sightlines in the geometry provided by the map. Portal mechanics let you create new routes and attack angles. You can appear behind an opponent, look through a portal to gather information or use a portal to escape a losing fight. The best players are therefore solving a spatial puzzle while aiming.
Who should try it
- Players who enjoy movement tricks, vertical routes and surprise attacks.
- Players who find conventional lane-based maps too predictable.
- Teams willing to communicate portal locations and exploit newly opened angles.
Choose another game if you want military realism, a traditional weapon economy or a large vehicle-focused battlefield. Portal movement is the point, not a minor feature layered onto a conventional shooter.
6. Battlefield 2042: the paid large-scale military option
Battlefield 2042 is the paid choice for players who want a military setting with broad maps, vehicles, close-quarters fights and large-scale multiplayer modes. It is closer to Call of Duty in theme and weapon presentation than the portal or character-ability games, but its battles are generally more expansive and vehicle-oriented.

Check the price before purchasing
PC store prices for Battlefield 2042 vary by region and promotion. Do not rely on an old article or an unqualified price; open the current storefront listing for your country and verify which edition is being sold. A sale can make it a strong value, while a full-price purchase may not suit someone whose main goal is simply to avoid spending money on Call of Duty.

How to choose when your PC is low-end
There is no universal definition of a low-end gaming PC. A system that runs one competitive shooter well may struggle with a larger physics or battle-royale title. Use the following process instead of trusting a generic “low-end” label.
- Identify your exact hardware. Record the processor model, installed RAM, graphics card and graphics memory, operating-system version and available storage.
- Compare against the game’s current official minimum. THE FINALS has the explicit minimum of Windows 10 64-bit, 12 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-6600K or Ryzen 5 1600, and GTX 1050 Ti or RX 580. VALORANT’s published requirements include at least 1 GB of VRAM for dedicated graphics. For the other games, check the current PC listing rather than assuming they will run because they are free.
- Leave room above minimums. Minimum specifications generally describe launchability, not a guaranteed frame rate, resolution or quality preset. A small margin helps with background applications and future updates.
- Test before spending. Start with a free title that meets your hardware requirements. If it performs poorly, lower resolution and demanding effects first, close overlays and confirm that the game is using the intended graphics processor.
- Measure the result in a real match. A menu can run smoothly while a crowded firefight, destruction event or large battle causes drops. Check several matches before deciding that a game is a good fit.
Keep the total cost genuinely low
Free entry is only one part of the budget. Also consider the launcher, download size shown by the current store, recurring optional purchases and whether your internet connection can handle updates. THE FINALS and Apex Legends explicitly include in-game purchases. Free-to-play status should therefore be read as “no upfront purchase required,” not “nothing is ever sold.”

- Install one free game whose official minimum requirements your PC meets.
- Skip cosmetic bundles, battle passes and currency purchases until you know you will keep playing.
- Use the tutorial or practice range before entering competitive modes.
- Only consider a paid game such as Battlefield 2042 after checking its current regional discount and edition contents.
Installation and first-match checklist
- Use the official PC storefront or launcher. Apex Legends is offered through the EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store. Counter-Strike 2, THE FINALS and the Splitgate games are available through their current Steam listings; VALORANT uses Riot’s PC client. Availability and launcher requirements can change, so verify the live listing.
- Confirm the operating system and graphics driver. An out-of-date driver can cause crashes or missing visual effects even when the hardware meets the stated minimum.

Expecting every alternative to have COD-style respawns
Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT remove you from the current round after you are eliminated. Apex Legends adds looting and survival decisions. Choose THE FINALS if immediate, repeatable action is your priority.
Assuming free means lightweight
A free price does not predict hardware demand. THE FINALS lists 12 GB of RAM and a GTX 1050 Ti or RX 580 as minimums, and every live-service game can change its requirements through updates. Check the current specification for your exact PC.
Choosing by realism alone
Battlefield 2042 offers the most recognizable military scale, but Apex Legends, VALORANT and Splitgate 2 deliberately add abilities or portal movement. Decide whether you want realism, tactical systems or unusual movement before downloading.

Battlefield 2042 prices differ by country and promotion. A recommendation to buy it only makes sense after you have checked the current store price and the edition included in that offer.
