For verified couch play, choose Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Its official feature description explicitly promises two-player offline split-screen and includes space combat. If you want a retro option and own a Nintendo GameCube, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike supports two-player split-screen co-op and versus play. Star Wars: Squadrons is the better fit for online first-person dogfights and fleet battles, but the cited official material does not verify same-console local multiplayer.

The three games at a glance

Game Verified multiplayer mode Space-combat format Hardware for the documented mode Couch suitability
Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) Two-player offline split-screen Space combat is included in the game’s feature description PlayStation 4 or Xbox One Best modern choice when two people want to play on one console
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike Two-player split-screen co-op and versus Space-battle missions Nintendo GameCube Best retro choice if you already have the console and controllers
Star Wars: Squadrons Multiplayer dogfights and fleet battles; same-console local play is not verified in the cited official material First-person starfighter combat The cited official page does not establish a console-specific local mode Use it for online sessions, not as a guaranteed couch game

The distinction between “multiplayer” and “local multiplayer” matters. A game can support several players over the internet while offering no way for two people to share one screen. The recommendations above separate documented same-console modes from online-only or unconfirmed options.

What counts as local multiplayer in this guide

Local multiplayer means two people use the same console and display during one session. Split-screen divides the picture into separate views; each player receives an independent portion of the screen. Co-op means both players work toward a shared objective, while versus means they compete directly. A title can offer both, as Rebel Strike does.

“Offline” is an important qualifier for Battlefront II. The official StarWars.com feature description specifically says players can team up from the comfort of the couch with two-player offline split-screen, and limits that feature to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. That is stronger evidence for a living-room session than a generic statement that a game has multiplayer.

Star Wars Battlefront II - PlayStation 4
  • A new hero, a story untold in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years
  • The ultimate battleground
  • Galactic scale space combat: Space combat has been designed for Star Wars Battlefront II from the ground up with distinct handling, weapons and customization options
  • Battery: No battery used

For Squadrons, the official description establishes first-person multiplayer dogfights and fleet battles. It does not establish that two people can connect two controllers to one console and play locally. Treating it as a couch recommendation would therefore risk buying the wrong game for your setup.

Star Wars Battlefront II (2017): the clearest modern couch pick

Why it leads the list

Battlefront II is the safest recommendation when the requirement is a contemporary console game with documented same-screen play. StarWars.com explicitly describes two-player offline split-screen and mentions space combat in the same feature material. You do not have to infer local support from a general multiplayer label.

The mode is designed for two people sharing a television. Each player uses a separate controller, and the screen divides so both can control their own character or vehicle. Because the documented feature is offline, an internet connection is not presented as a prerequisite for the couch session.

Platform limits you must check

The cited split-screen feature is limited to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Match the disc or download edition to one of those systems before buying. A listing for another platform should not be assumed to contain the same local mode simply because the title is similar.

This platform qualification is especially important when shopping for used copies. Read the platform name on the case, store page, or listing rather than relying on a photograph of the cover. For a PlayStation session, a search such as “Star Wars Battlefront II PS4” keeps the title and platform together; use the equivalent Xbox One wording when appropriate.

What the game is best at

  • Two people who want a straightforward, modern couch session.
  • Groups that prefer an accessible Star Wars action game over a dedicated flight simulation.
  • Players who want space combat available without moving to an online-only setup.

The cited feature copy confirms the availability of space combat and split-screen, but it does not provide a detailed technical breakdown of flight physics, mission counts, or local player progression. Choose it for the verified local format first; do not assume that every online feature is available offline.

Trade-offs

The choice is tied to older console generations: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are the platforms named for the documented split-screen feature. If your household owns only a different system, the local recommendation may not apply. Availability of physical copies, digital listings, prices, and any subscription requirement can change, so check the current platform listing at the time of purchase.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike: a genuine retro alternative

What is verified

The reference entry for Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike documents two-player split-screen co-op and versus modes. It also identifies space-battle missions, making it a direct match for a request to fly and fight in space with a friend on one console.

Co-op lets both players work through supported content together; versus lets them compete. Having both formats gives the game more flexibility than a title that offers only competitive matches. The evidence establishes the modes, but does not specify how many missions support each mode, so check the in-game mode descriptions once you have the disc.

Hardware requirements

This is a Nintendo GameCube choice. You need a working GameCube, a compatible copy of the game, and two GameCube-compatible controllers. If any of those pieces is missing, the game is not a practical spontaneous purchase in the way a readily available modern console download might be.

Used-copy stock and hardware condition are the main constraints. Confirm that the listing is for the GameCube edition and that the seller identifies the disc and case condition clearly. A generic listing for “Rogue Squadron” is not enough because the local modes discussed here belong specifically to Rebel Strike.

Who should choose it

  • Retro players who already maintain a GameCube setup.
  • Friends who want both cooperative and head-to-head split-screen options.
  • Collectors who value documented local space-battle content over current-generation presentation.

It is not the practical choice for someone who has no GameCube. Acquiring the console, controllers, and game can cost more time and money than selecting the modern option, and used availability changes from one seller to another.

Star Wars: Squadrons: excellent online combat, unverified couch play

What is documented

The official StarWars.com description presents Squadrons as a first-person multiplayer starfighter game with dogfights and fleet battles. That makes it attractive for friends who can meet online and want a focused cockpit perspective rather than a broader action game.

Why it is not a verified local recommendation

The cited official material does not say that two people can play on one console with split-screen or another same-screen mode. Do not interpret “multiplayer” as proof of local support. If your requirement is two controllers on one television, choose a title with explicit split-screen documentation instead.

When it is the right purchase

  • Your group will play from separate consoles or locations.
  • You specifically want first-person dogfights and fleet battles.
  • You are comfortable confirming the current online platform, account, and subscription requirements for your system.

Online requirements, platform availability, and subscription policies can change. Verify those details on the current store page for your platform. The local-play limitation is the key decision point: Squadrons should not be bought as a guaranteed couch game based only on its multiplayer label.

Choose by the kind of session you want

Two people, one modern console

Pick Battlefront II (2017), and make sure the copy is for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. It is the only option in this shortlist whose two-player offline split-screen feature is explicitly stated in the cited official material for those systems.

Two people, one retro console

Pick Rebel Strike if you have a Nintendo GameCube and two compatible controllers. Its documented split-screen co-op and versus modes cover both cooperative and competitive evenings.

Friends in different homes

Pick Squadrons when first-person starfighter combat and online dogfights or fleet battles matter more than sharing a screen. Confirm the current online requirements before purchasing.

  • Jump into the boots of an elite special forces soldier, equally lethal on the ground and space, in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years and bridges events between the films’ Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
  • Join your squadron and weave in between asteroids fields, fly through Imperial Dock Yards and take down massive capital ships as you pilot legendary starfighters in high stakes dogfights with up to 24 players and 40 AI ships.
  • Team up with a friend from the comfort of your couch with two-player offline split-screen play. Earn rewards, customise your troopers and heroes, and bring your upgrades with you on the online multiplayer battleground.
  • Master your craft with customisable character progression. Upgrade abilities unique to each hero, trooper class, and starfighter.

You want both local and online options

Start with the local requirement, not the feature count. If the group must be able to play together offline, select Battlefront II or Rebel Strike according to the hardware you own. Add an online-focused game only if your group also wants remote sessions.

Controller and room checklist

A successful couch session depends on simple compatibility checks. Complete these before opening the game:

  1. Identify the console that will be connected to the display.
  2. Match the game edition to that console: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One for the documented Battlefront II split-screen feature, or Nintendo GameCube for Rebel Strike.
  3. Prepare two compatible controllers. One controller cannot provide two independent inputs.
  4. Connect and test both controllers in the console menu before launching the game.
  5. Place the display where both players can read their half of the split screen without sitting at an extreme angle.
  6. Keep the game case or digital listing available so you can verify the exact platform if a mode is missing.

For a two-player session, “two compatible controllers” is the practical minimum. Extra controllers do not create additional local players when the documented mode is limited to two.

How to set up a Battlefront II couch session

  1. Confirm that the console is a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and that the game edition matches it.
  2. Connect two controllers and verify that the console sees both inputs.
  3. Launch the game and open the mode menu that offers offline or split-screen play.
  4. Have the second player join with the second controller when the game prompts for another participant.
  5. Select the available space-combat activity or map once both players are shown as active.
  6. Begin the match and check that each player has a separate portion of the display.

If the menu does not show an offline split-screen option, stop and recheck the edition and console. The documented feature is tied to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; changing unrelated settings will not add it to a different platform edition.

How to set up a Rebel Strike session

  1. Connect the Nintendo GameCube to the display and attach two compatible controllers.
  2. Insert the Rebel Strike disc and start the console.
  3. Open the game’s multiplayer or split-screen area.
  4. Choose co-op for a shared objective or versus for a competitive match.
  5. Select a supported space-battle mission or versus activity and confirm both controller inputs before starting.

Because this is a used retro setup for many players, test the console, disc, and both controllers before inviting friends. A failed controller or unreadable disc can look like a missing multiplayer feature even when the game supports it.

Buying and availability checks

Platform accuracy is more important than a low headline price. Use the full game title and platform in your search, then verify the edition in the listing details. For the modern choice, that means checking for Battlefront II on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. For the retro choice, check that the product is specifically Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike for Nintendo GameCube.

Prices, stock, used condition, and subscription requirements change. Treat any price you see as a current listing rather than a permanent cost, and confirm the seller’s platform information before ordering. A physical copy may be available from one seller while another has only a different console edition.

For Squadrons, verify the current online store listing and the requirements for the platform where your friends play. Its documented strengths are online first-person dogfights and fleet battles, not a confirmed same-console mode.

Troubleshooting a failed couch session

The second player cannot join

  • Check that the second controller is connected and responds in the console interface.
  • Confirm that the game edition matches the platform named in the documented feature: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One for Battlefront II, Nintendo GameCube for Rebel Strike.
  • Return to the game’s offline or split-screen menu and join from the second controller at the prompt.

The split-screen option is missing

First check the platform, because the local feature is not documented across every edition. A different console version of Battlefront II should not be assumed to include the same mode. For Rebel Strike, verify that you have the third GameCube title rather than another entry in the series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Squadrons shows multiplayer but no local mode

That behavior is consistent with the available official description. The page documents multiplayer dogfights and fleet battles but does not verify same-console play. Use the game for online sessions or select one of the explicitly documented split-screen choices for couch play.

The used retro setup is unreliable

Test the GameCube, disc, and both controllers separately. Replace or return hardware that fails basic input or disc-read checks before diagnosing the game mode. Used stock and condition vary, so a seller’s current description matters more than an old listing title.

Bottom-line recommendation

For most players, buy Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One: it is the most clearly verified modern option for two-player offline split-screen space combat. Choose Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike when you want documented split-screen co-op and versus play on a Nintendo GameCube. Choose Star Wars: Squadrons for online first-person dogfights and fleet battles, but do not count on it for same-console local multiplayer without separate confirmation.
