There is no evidence-backed universal winner for recommending games from a Steam library. A practical shortlist is Qwen3 or Gemma 3 through Ollama, plus the model families available in LM Studio. Choose a model by testing recommendation quality on your own games and prompts, then checking hardware fit, offline requirements, privacy expectations, and the work needed to prepare your library data.
What a local LLM can do for a Steam-library recommendation system
A local large language model can read a structured list of games you own, combine it with a description of your tastes, and produce ranked suggestions with explanations. For example, you can ask it to find short single-player games, identify titles similar to a particular favorite, or separate games that fit a current mood from games that require a long commitment.
The model does not automatically know which games you own. It needs usable input: a pasted list, a local document, or data supplied through an application you build around the model. The available evidence does not establish a current, authoritative Steam-library import workflow for either LM Studio or Ollama. Do not assume that either runtime can sign in to Steam, retrieve your library, or handle Steam authentication and privacy requirements for you.
That limitation changes the buying decision. The “best” model is not simply the one with the most parameters or the longest context window. It is the model that can run comfortably on your computer and consistently gives useful, honest explanations when it receives your actual library and preference prompts.

Shortlist: Qwen3, Gemma 3, and LM Studio-supported models
Ollama’s catalog provides concrete examples for Qwen3 and Gemma 3. The figures below are catalog specifications, not recommendation-quality benchmarks. Catalog values can change, so verify the listing for the exact variant before downloading.
| Model family | Example variant | Listed file size | Listed context window | What the specification tells you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen3 | qwen3:8b | 5.2 GB | 40K | A relatively compact starting point for testing local recommendations. |
| Qwen3 | qwen3:14b | 9.3 GB | 40K | A larger option when your system has more memory and you want to compare output against the 8B variant. |
| Gemma 3 | 4B multimodal variant | 3.4 GB | 128K | The smallest listed Gemma 3 example; useful when storage and memory are tight. |
| Gemma 3 | 12B multimodal variant | 8.2 GB | 128K | A mid-sized option with a longer listed context window. |
| Gemma 3 | 27B multimodal variant | 17 GB | 128K | The largest listed Gemma 3 example; it requires substantially more storage and memory headroom. |
Qwen3 is listed in variants ranging from 0.6B to 235B parameters. Gemma 3 is listed in 4B, 12B, and 27B multimodal variants. Parameter count is a capacity label, not a score for game recommendations. Likewise, a 128K context window does not prove that a model will produce better picks than a model with a 40K window.
LM Studio supports model families such as Qwen, Mistral, Gemma, and gpt-oss. Its model inventory exposes fields that are useful when comparing candidates: model type, format, parameter count, file size, architecture, tool-use metadata, and context length. The inventory also distinguishes an embedding model from an LLM. Make sure you select an LLM for chat-based recommendations; an embedding model serves a different role, such as representing text for search or retrieval.
How to choose between the candidates
Start with the smallest model that fits your test
Use a smaller variant to establish a baseline. A compact model lets you test your data format and prompts without committing substantial storage or waiting for a large download. Once the workflow is reliable, compare a larger variant from the same family or a different family. This isolates whether a change in output comes from model size, model family, or a changed prompt.
The listed file size is not the same thing as total memory use. LM Studio explains that model weights are loaded into computer memory along with other parameters. Your operating system, the runtime, the context you send, and any other applications also consume memory. Treat the catalog file size as a planning signal rather than a guarantee that a machine with exactly that much free space or RAM will run the model well.
Use recommendation usefulness as the deciding test
Ask every candidate to do the same work with the same library sample. A useful answer should connect each suggestion to stated preferences, identify reasons the match may fail, and offer alternatives rather than merely listing famous games. Check whether the model correctly distinguishes games you own from games it is mentioning as outside options.

No task-specific benchmark or attributable statistic establishes that Qwen3 beats Gemma 3, that a particular parameter size is optimal, or that LM Studio produces better recommendations than Ollama. Any ranking beyond your own controlled test would overstate the available evidence.

LM Studio is oriented around an application workflow: obtain model files, load a model, chat with it, optionally chat with documents or retrieval-augmented data, and run a local server. Ollama emphasizes a model catalog and local runtime/API workflows. This is a difference in how you operate the tools, not evidence that one runtime generates better game picks.
Hardware, storage, and memory planning
Before downloading anything, record your computer’s available RAM, free storage, operating-system limits, and whether other memory-heavy applications will remain open. The sources do not establish one minimum RAM amount, an ideal GPU, or a universally correct quantization for this task. Do not buy memory or another component on the assumption that a particular number is guaranteed to work.
- Storage: reserve room for the model file and additional runtime data. The listed examples range from 3.4 GB for Gemma 3 4B to 17 GB for Gemma 3 27B.
- Memory headroom: the model must coexist with your operating system and the application hosting it. A file that fits on disk can still fail to load if available memory is insufficient.
- Context planning: a long context window permits more text in one request, but sending your entire library every time can increase memory pressure and make answers harder to evaluate. Start with a focused subset or a compact structured file.
- Variant testing: compare two variants only after confirming that both can load reliably on your machine. A slower or unstable setup is not useful for a recommendation assistant.
If a model fails to load, close other memory-intensive programs, reduce the model size, shorten the supplied library data, or choose a different variant. Hardware compatibility should be checked against the runtime’s current requirements rather than inferred from parameter count alone.
Privacy and offline operation
LM Studio’s offline documentation states: “LM Studio can operate entirely offline, just make sure to get some model files first.” After the files are available, its documented local functions include chatting with models, chatting with documents or retrieval-augmented data, and running a local server. The same documentation says chat input stays on the device: “Nothing you enter into LM Studio when chatting with LLMs leaves your device.”

There is an important boundary: searching the model catalog and downloading model files require connectivity. Plan those actions separately from your offline use. If your library list contains personal notes, play history, or sensitive information, verify that the workflow you choose keeps that data local at every step.

Do not generalize LM Studio’s documented behavior to every wrapper, plugin, script, or web interface. A local model can still be connected to an external service by the surrounding application. Inspect the entire workflow, not only where the model weights are stored.
Prepare your Steam library data without assuming an integration
Because a current authoritative import method was not established, treat library preparation as a manual data task unless you have independently verified an integration for your exact software and account setup. Do not give a model your Steam credentials, and do not assume that a third-party connector has the same privacy or authentication properties as the local runtime.
Create a compact, explicit library file
Start with one game per line or one record per game. Include only information that improves the recommendation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Game title, including the edition or expansion name when it affects the experience.
- Genres or tags you trust.
- Whether you have played it, finished it, or stopped playing.
- Your own rating or a short note such as “liked exploration, disliked stealth.”
- Practical constraints, such as “under 10 hours,” “controller preferred,” or “co-op required.”
Keep the format consistent. A small, clean list is easier for a model to interpret than a long export containing duplicate titles, marketing text, or unrelated account metadata. If you use a document or retrieval workflow, separate the library list from your preference notes so you can update either one without rewriting the other.
Tell the model what it must not assume
State that the supplied list is the set of games you own, and distinguish it from games that may be suggested as alternatives. Ask the model to say when a fact is missing instead of inventing a feature, playtime, platform, or ownership status. If a recommendation depends on a detail you did not provide, require a clarifying question.
A prompt that makes recommendations testable
Use the same prompt structure for every model. This makes a comparison meaningful and prevents a model from receiving more guidance than another.

You are recommending games only from the owned-library list below.
Player preferences:
- Favorite mechanics:
- Mechanics to avoid:
- Desired session length:
- Solo, co-op, or either:
- Current mood:
For each recommendation:
1. Name the game exactly as listed.
2. Explain which stated preferences it matches.
3. Identify one plausible mismatch or caveat.
4. Give a confidence rating from 1 to 5 and explain the rating.
5. If the list does not contain a good match, say so instead of inventing one.
Owned-library list:
[paste your structured list here]
The bracketed phrase is a template variable, not a claim that the model can retrieve your library automatically. Replace it with your own data before sending the prompt.
For a stronger test, run several prompt types: a broad “what should I play next?” request, a constrained request such as “under eight hours and no competitive multiplayer,” and a similarity request based on one game you already enjoyed. Record the model’s picks and explanations without changing the library data between runs.
Step-by-step comparison method
- Select two or three candidates. A sensible first set is Qwen3 8B, Qwen3 14B, and Gemma 3 12B if your computer can accommodate their listed sizes. If it cannot, start with the smaller listed variants.
- Obtain the model files. Model discovery and downloads require connectivity in LM Studio. Check the current Ollama catalog entry for the exact tag and specifications you intend to use.
- Load one model at a time. Confirm that it starts without memory errors before adding your library data.
- Prepare one fixed test set. Use the same owned-game list, preference notes, and prompt for every candidate.
- Run at least three recommendation tasks. Include an open-ended request, a tightly constrained request, and a similarity request.
- Score the answers. Check ownership accuracy, preference match, explanation quality, caveat honesty, and whether the model admits uncertainty.
- Record practical behavior. Note load reliability, response speed as experienced on your machine, memory pressure, and how much editing your library file required.
- Repeat any close result. A single answer can be unusually good or poor. Re-run the same task before deciding that one family is better.
This process produces a personal result rather than a universal ranking. Keep the prompt and data fixed so that you are comparing models instead of comparing different instructions.
How to evaluate recommendation quality
| Criterion | What to check | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Library accuracy | Every “owned” recommendation appears in your supplied list. | The model treats a suggested alternative as a game you already own. |
| Preference match | The explanation refers to your stated mechanics, mood, length, or multiplayer preference. | The answer gives generic genre descriptions without connecting them to your request. |
| Caveats | The model identifies a likely mismatch, such as a long campaign when you requested short sessions. | Every suggestion is presented as a perfect fit. |
| Uncertainty | The model says when your data is insufficient and asks for clarification when needed. | It invents ownership, features, or personal preferences. |
| Actionability | The ranking helps you choose what to launch next and explains why. | The answer is a long, unranked list that leaves the decision to you. |
Use the same standards for every candidate. Do not treat fluent prose, parameter count, file size, or context length as a substitute for checking whether the suggestions actually fit you.

The model recommends games you do not own
Separate the owned-library section from the alternatives section and instruct the model to use exact titles from the supplied list for primary recommendations. Ask it to label outside suggestions explicitly. If it continues to mix the two, use a smaller, cleaner data file.

The answer is generic
Add concrete preferences and require an evidence-based explanation for every pick. “I like RPGs” is less useful than a combination such as “turn-based combat, exploration, solo play, and sessions under one hour.” Include a game you know well as a calibration example and explain what you liked or disliked about it.

The model hallucinates features or play requirements
Require the model to mark missing facts and avoid presenting uncertain details as verified. A local model’s offline status does not make its game knowledge current or accurate. Treat unverified claims as prompts for your own check rather than as facts.
The model runs out of memory or becomes unstable
Reduce the variant size, shorten the context, close other applications, or divide the library into a focused subset. The listed model file size does not guarantee successful loading because weights and other parameters also occupy memory.
The context becomes unwieldy
Do not paste every note you have into every request. Keep a canonical library file, then send only the fields needed for the current decision. For large collections, a document or retrieval workflow can help organize information locally, but you still need to verify that the retrieved records are correct.
You assume that local means every action is offline
In LM Studio, catalog search and model downloads need connectivity even though local chatting, document conversations, and the local server can operate after model files are obtained. Check any surrounding tools for their own network behavior before entering personal data.
Which option should you try first?
Choose Qwen3 when you want a straightforward size comparison
Qwen3 offers a broad range, from 0.6B through 235B parameters, with the catalog examples qwen3:8b at 5.2 GB and qwen3:14b at 9.3 GB, both listed with 40K context. That range makes it convenient to test a smaller and larger variant while keeping the family constant. The specifications alone do not establish that either variant is better at game recommendations.
Choose Gemma 3 when a long listed context window matters to your workflow
Gemma 3’s listed 4B, 12B, and 27B multimodal variants have 128K context windows, with catalog file sizes of 3.4 GB, 8.2 GB, and 17 GB respectively. A long context can be useful when you need to provide extensive notes, but it is not a quality guarantee. Test whether the extra capacity helps your actual prompts before accepting the additional memory and storage cost.
Choose LM Studio when you prefer an application-centered local workflow
LM Studio supports several model families, exposes detailed inventory fields, and documents local chat, document or retrieval conversations, and local-server use after model files are available. It is a good fit when inspecting model metadata and working through a graphical application matters more than choosing one particular catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerdict
The best local LLM for recommending games from your Steam library is the candidate that passes your own repeatable test, fits your available memory, and keeps your data within the privacy boundary you require. Start with a manageable Qwen3 or Gemma 3 variant, or a comparable model in LM Studio; prepare a clean owned-game list; use identical prompts; and score the explanations rather than trusting model size or context length. Until a current, authoritative Steam-library import workflow is verified, plan on supplying the library data yourself.
