For most U.S. households, YouTube TV is the best overall live-TV streaming service in 2026. Sling TV is the better budget or short-term pick; Hulu + Live TV is the best bundle; Fubo is a sports-focused alternative; Philo and Frndly TV are inexpensive entertainment supplements; and DIRECTV STREAM is the premium channel-heavy option. Prices, local stations, sports rights, blackouts, add-ons, and taxes vary, so verify the ZIP-code lineup and renewal price before subscribing.

Quick verdict

YouTube TV is the best overall live-TV streaming service for most U.S. households. Its main plan combines a broad mix of local broadcast networks, news, entertainment, and sports with unlimited DVR, six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams. It is not the cheapest option, though: the listed regular price is $82.99 per month after a current new-subscriber offer of $67.99 per month for the first three months.

Sling TV is the better budget and short-term choice. Hulu + Live TV is the strongest bundle if you already pay for Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN content. Fubo deserves a close look from sports-first households, while Philo and Frndly TV are inexpensive entertainment supplements rather than full cable replacements. DIRECTV STREAM is the premium, traditional-pay-TV alternative for people who need a large channel lineup and accept a higher bill.

Pricing note: The figures above are advertised or listed plan prices, not guaranteed final bills. Taxes, premium channels, sports packages, regional sports fees, DVR upgrades, introductory pricing, and third-party billing can change what you pay.

1. YouTube TV: best overall for most people

YouTube TV is the safest default recommendation when a household wants one live-TV subscription that covers several types of viewing. Its main plan advertises 100+ channels, unlimited DVR, up to six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams. That combination makes it a practical fit for a family or shared household that watches local broadcasts, national news, entertainment networks, and sports without wanting to assemble several narrow services.

The listed regular price is $82.99 per month. A current new-user promotion lists $67.99 per month for the first three months, but that introductory price should not be treated as the normal long-term rate. The first renewal is the figure to put in your household budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube TV also lists a separate Sports Plan at $64.99 per month after its introductory period. It is aimed at sports-focused viewing and includes features such as multiview. Do not assume that the sports plan alone replaces the main YouTube TV package or carries every local, regional, and league-specific channel you need; compare the exact sport, station, and market requirements first.

Choose YouTube TV if:

  • You want one broad package rather than several specialist subscriptions.
  • Unlimited DVR matters to your household.
  • Several people need separate household profiles and concurrent viewing.
  • You want local broadcast channels, news, entertainment, and sports in the same general package.

Look elsewhere if:

  • Your first priority is the lowest possible monthly price.
  • You only watch a small group of entertainment or lifestyle networks.
  • Your preferred local station or regional sports network is unavailable in your ZIP code.

2. Sling TV: best budget and flexibility pick

Sling TV is a better answer than YouTube TV when you want to keep the starting bill low or subscribe only for a specific event, channel group, or short period. Sling’s model centers on selecting a base package and adding sports, news, entertainment, or DVR features as needed. Its comparison page lists 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day passes beginning at $4.99, which can make sense when a full month would be wasteful.

The flexibility comes with a significant qualification: Sling is not a complete cable replacement in every market. Local broadcast stations and sports coverage vary, and the advertised starting price can become much higher after add-ons. Check local-channel availability before choosing Sling as your only service, particularly if you need local news, network television, or regional sports.

Choose Sling TV if:

  • You want a smaller base package instead of paying for a large bundle.
  • You need live TV for a short trip, tournament, event, or temporary situation.
  • You are willing to compare add-on costs rather than relying on the headline starting price.
  • You can obtain local broadcast channels separately, such as with an antenna where reception permits.

Best budget tactic: Write down the exact channels you need, price the base plan plus every required add-on, and compare that total with YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, or a specialist service. Sling is only the budget winner if the package you actually need remains inexpensive.

3. Hulu + Live TV: best live-TV and streaming bundle

Hulu + Live TV is most compelling for households that already value Hulu’s on-demand library and would otherwise subscribe separately to Disney+ and ESPN-related content. Hulu currently promotes an ad-supported package at $89.99 per month that includes Hulu + Live TV, Disney+ with ads, and ESPN content.

The bundle can be a strong value when those services would already be on your bill. It is less attractive if you only want a simple live-TV package or a narrow sports and news solution. A bundle also deserves closer scrutiny than its name suggests: Hulu states that live and video-on-demand content in the Live TV plan plays with ads. The presence of Hulu in the bundle does not mean that every Hulu library title is ad-free. A qualifying plan switch or tier is needed for an ad-free Hulu library, and that can change the price.

Choose Hulu + Live TV if:

  • Your household already uses Hulu and Disney+.
  • You want live entertainment, news, and sports alongside an on-demand library.
  • You prefer consolidating several subscriptions into one current offer.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You are trying to minimize ads in both live and on-demand viewing.
  • You do not use the included Disney+ or Hulu content.
  • You want the simplest possible live-TV-only bill.

4. Fubo: a strong sports alternative

Fubo belongs on the shortlist for sports-first households. Its plans focus on live sports as well as TV channels, full episodes, and movies on demand. It can be a better fit than a general-purpose service when the particular leagues, teams, sports networks, and local stations you follow line up with Fubo’s current package.

  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Fubo’s prices and package structure are especially important to verify immediately before signing up. Regional sports availability, sports rights, channel disputes, promotional terms, and blackouts can change. A large channel count by itself does not prove that Fubo carries the specific game or network you want.

How to compare Fubo with YouTube TV

  1. List the exact sports, leagues, teams, and channels you watch.
  2. Check local broadcast stations and regional sports networks using your ZIP code.
  3. Confirm whether the required sports package is included or costs extra.
  4. Read blackout and out-of-market rules for the sports you care about.
  5. Compare the ordinary renewal price, not only the introductory offer.

Bottom line on Fubo: investigate it when sports drive the purchase, but do not call it the universal best sports service without identifying the sport and market.

5. DIRECTV STREAM: best premium traditional-TV alternative

DIRECTV STREAM is aimed at viewers who want a larger, more traditional pay-TV-style lineup and are willing to pay a premium for it. DIRECTV publishes a current lineup covering national, specialty, local, and regional channels, making its official lineup information useful when checking for a particular network.

That lineup should not be read as a universal promise. Channel placement and package inclusion can depend on the effective date, plan, and market. The lineup document also does not establish the complete current monthly bill, so check the purchase flow for the current price, introductory terms, taxes, fees, and add-ons.

Choose DIRECTV STREAM if:

  • You want broad channel coverage and a traditional pay-TV selection.
  • A particular specialty or regional channel is more important than the lowest price.
  • You have already compared the current lineup and total bill against less expensive services.

It is not the logical default for a budget-conscious household. Its value depends on whether the channels you need justify the premium over a broad but less expensive service.

6. Philo: best inexpensive entertainment package

Philo is one of the clearest low-cost choices for entertainment, lifestyle, reality, factual, and specialty programming. Its listed Essential plan costs $25 per month and includes 70+ live channels, 100+ ad-supported free channels, a one-year unlimited DVR, and more than 75,000 on-demand titles.

The lineup includes networks such as A&E, AMC, Discovery, Food Network, Hallmark, HISTORY, HGTV, Lifetime, Paramount Network, TLC, and WE tv. That is a useful collection for viewers who care more about those categories than about live sports or local broadcast news.

Philo is not a full replacement for a sports-and-locals package. It works particularly well as a low-cost entertainment layer paired with an antenna or a separate sports service. Its listed Bundle+ tier costs $33 per month and adds access to services including AMC+, HBO Max Basic with Ads, discovery+, and related content. Bundle composition can change, so confirm the current inclusions before treating it as a permanent bundle.

Choose Philo if:

  • You mainly watch lifestyle, reality, factual, classic, and entertainment networks.
  • You want to spend substantially less than a broad live-TV replacement.
  • You are comfortable getting local broadcast channels and sports elsewhere.

7. Frndly TV: best niche family and lifestyle option

Frndly TV is a supplement for viewers focused on family programming, lifestyle channels, classic television, and movies. Its three plans carry the same 50+ live channels and on-demand library:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Basic: $8.99 per month.
  • Classic: $10.99 per month.
  • Premium: $12.99 per month.

The higher tiers add features such as HD, simultaneous streams, and longer DVR retention. Frndly TV also lists add-ons including Lifetime Movie Club, A&E Crime Central, HISTORY Vault, Up Faith & Family, and Great American Pure Flix.

  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Frndly TV’s low price is its advantage, but its narrow positioning is the reason it costs less. It is not the right primary recommendation for major live sports, broad national news, or a complete set of local broadcast stations. Pick it when its specific channel mix matches your household, not simply because it has the lowest monthly price.

Which service should you choose?

Your priority Best starting point What to verify before subscribing
One broad service for a household YouTube TV Local stations, renewal price, sports add-ons, and regional sports availability
Lowest cost for a short period Sling TV Day-pass terms, required add-ons, and whether local channels are included
Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN content in one bundle Hulu + Live TV Ad tier, included content, and the price of any ad-free upgrade
Sports-first viewing Compare Fubo and YouTube TV The exact sport, network, local station, regional rights, and blackout rules

Family and lifestyle channels at a very low price Frndly TV Whether its niche lineup covers your must-watch channels
Traditional, channel-heavy pay TV DIRECTV STREAM Current plan lineup, market availability, full checkout price, and fees

How to compare the real cost

Do not compare only the large channel-count number or the promotional monthly price. Use this checklist:

  1. Make a must-have channel list. Include local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, or other broadcast stations; national news; regional sports; league-specific networks; and favorite entertainment networks. A service can advertise many channels and still miss the one you watch most.
  2. Enter your ZIP code. Local broadcast and regional sports availability is market-dependent. This is essential for YouTube TV, Sling, Fubo, DIRECTV STREAM, and any service you are considering as a cable replacement.
  3. Separate the introductory price from the renewal price. For example, YouTube TV’s $67.99 rate is listed for the first three months, while the regular listed price is $82.99. Check the first full-price billing date.
  4. Add every required extra. Include sports packages, premium networks, entertainment add-ons, DVR upgrades, and any regional sports fee shown at checkout.
  5. Count simultaneous viewers. Three streams and six household accounts are important YouTube TV features, but the needs of a two-person household are different from those of a family watching in several rooms.
  6. Price the alternatives together. Philo plus an antenna or a separate sports service may suit a particular household, but two subscriptions can eventually cost more than one broad package.
  7. Check billing and cancellation terms. Introductory offers, taxes, add-ons, and third-party billing can all affect the amount charged after signup.

Can a streaming service replace cable?

Often, but not automatically. A broad service such as YouTube TV can cover many of the same viewing categories as cable, while Sling TV can reduce the bill for households willing to accept a smaller or customized package. Hulu + Live TV can replace several separate entertainment subscriptions when its included bundle matches what you already use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The difficult cases are local stations and sports. Local availability varies by market, and sports may be affected by regional rights, league packages, and blackouts. Philo and Frndly TV are better viewed as focused entertainment services than as complete cable replacements. If a service misses one or two local broadcast channels, an antenna may help where reception, building materials, and broadcast distance permit; it is not a guaranteed solution at every address.

What device do you need?

You do not need a special box if your television already supports the required apps and has a reliable internet connection. If the TV’s software is outdated, the app is unavailable, or you want a separate interface, add a streaming player connected through HDMI. The device provides access to apps; it does not include the live-TV subscription.

A compact streaming device for TV can be useful when moving between services or upgrading an older television. Consider the app availability for your chosen service, the TV’s HDMI input, Wi-Fi coverage, and the display formats you actually use.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max: Amazon’s listed specifications include support for 4K formats, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Wi-Fi 6E. Confirm the current model, app support, television compatibility, and retailer availability before buying.
  • Roku Streaming Stick 4K: Roku documents HDMI connection and support for 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Wi-Fi. It is a reasonable compact alternative, but do not assume every live-TV app or feature behaves identically on every device.
  • Google TV Streamer (4K): Google positions it as a way to bring live TV and streaming apps together. It requires a compatible HDMI display for 4K output, and the apps you need should still be checked before purchase.

None of these devices removes the service’s monthly charge, local-channel restrictions, sports blackouts, or internet requirement.

Common problems and how to avoid them

A local channel is missing

Recheck the service’s ZIP-code lookup and confirm that the station is included in your market. If it is not, compare another live-TV provider or consider an antenna for free over-the-air broadcasts where reception is adequate. An antenna does not solve regional sports rights or provide every cable network.

The game you want is blacked out

Check the sport’s local, regional, and out-of-market rules before changing services. Switching from Fubo to YouTube TV, or the reverse, will not necessarily bypass a rights restriction. The key question is whether the required network and rights are included for your location.

The bill rose after signup

Look for the end of an introductory offer, an automatically renewed add-on, a premium network, taxes, a DVR upgrade, or a regional sports charge. Save the renewal price shown during checkout and compare it with the current plan page before assuming the service changed incorrectly.

The stream buffers

First check whether the service reports an outage, then test the connection on the viewing device, move the device or router to improve Wi-Fi coverage, update the app, and try a wired connection when practical. Buffering can result from the home network, the device, the internet provider, or a service outage; a PC cleanup utility cannot establish that the streaming provider or network is the cause.

Final recommendations

Start with YouTube TV if you want the most balanced single-service replacement and its price fits your budget. Choose Sling TV when flexibility, a smaller package, or a short-term pass matters more than comprehensive coverage. Pick Hulu + Live TV when its Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN bundle replaces subscriptions you already pay for.

For sports, compare Fubo and YouTube TV against the exact teams, leagues, local stations, and blackout rules. Choose Philo for inexpensive entertainment and lifestyle channels, Frndly TV for its family and lifestyle niche, and DIRECTV STREAM only after confirming that its broader lineup justifies its premium price in your market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which live TV streaming service is best overall?

YouTube TV is the best overall choice for most households because its main plan combines 100+ channels, local and national programming, unlimited DVR, six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams. Its listed regular price is $82.99 per month after a current introductory offer, so budget for the post-promotion rate and verify local channels in your ZIP code.

What is the cheapest live TV streaming service?

Frndly TV has the lowest listed monthly plan in this comparison at $8.99, but it is a niche service with family, lifestyle, classic-TV, and movie-oriented programming. For short-term viewing, Sling TV lists 1-, 3-, and 7-day passes beginning at $4.99. Neither is a complete replacement for broad local, news, and sports coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which live TV streaming service is best for sports?

Compare Fubo and YouTube TV using the exact sport, league, team, local station, regional sports network, and blackout rules you need. Sports rights and regional availability change, so channel counts alone are not enough to identify the best sports service.

Is Hulu + Live TV worth it if I already use Hulu and Disney+?

Hulu + Live TV is the strongest bundle when you already use Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN content. The currently promoted ad-supported package is $89.99 per month and includes Disney+ with ads. Live and on-demand content in the Live TV plan plays with ads, so check the cost and eligibility of any ad-free Hulu upgrade.

Can live TV streaming replace cable?

Yes, but check the service’s ZIP-code availability for local broadcast stations and regional sports. You may need an antenna for free over-the-air locals or a second service for sports. Philo and Frndly TV are generally better as entertainment supplements than as complete cable replacements.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: YouTube TV. Best budget or short-term option: Sling TV. Best bundle: Hulu + Live TV. Best sports alternatives: Compare Fubo and YouTube TV by sport and ZIP code. Best inexpensive entertainment services: Philo and Frndly TV. Best premium channel breadth: DIRECTV STREAM. Verify the renewal price, local channels, sports rights, add-ons, and final bill before subscribing.
