No single live-TV subscription carries every MLB game. Your best setup depends on whether you want a team’s local games, nationally televised games, or out-of-market games. Local rights vary by home market, national games move among several exclusive networks, and MLB.TV blacks out games in designated areas.

Use the MLB.com/Watch schedule for the specific game and date, then check your ZIP-code channel lineup before subscribing. The comparison below explains what each major option is documented to provide for the 2026 season and where a second subscription may still be necessary.

Nationally televised games

These are games distributed to a national network or streaming platform. In 2026, the national lineup includes Netflix, NBC and Peacock, Apple TV, FOX and FS1, TBS, and ESPN. A live-TV bundle may carry some of those channels, but exclusive games on a standalone streaming service will not automatically appear in every bundle.

Your team’s local regular-season games

Local broadcasts are controlled by the club’s regional sports network (RSN), local broadcast station, or an in-market direct-to-consumer (DTC) service. The relevant feed is determined by your home market, not simply by the service you prefer. A nationally scheduled game can also change which feed is available.

Out-of-market games

MLB.TV is designed for regular-season games outside your home territory. It is not a universal pass for every live game: geographic blackouts still apply, and national exclusives follow their own distribution agreements.

What you want Usually involved What to verify
Your local club’s games Local RSN, team DTC service, or local over-the-air station Your ZIP code, club listing, and whether that game is nationally exclusive
National games FOX/FS1, ESPN, TBS, NBC/Peacock, Apple TV, Netflix The exact network or app listed for that date
Games outside your market MLB.TV, subject to blackouts Your physical location and the blackout designation for the club

What MLB’s 2026 national schedule means for cord-cutters

MLB’s 2026 Opening Week schedule assigns recurring windows to different partners, but the exact matchup changes by date. Treat the following as a map of where games may appear, not as a guarantee that every game is available from one provider.

Typical 2026 window Partner or network Practical implication
Friday Apple TV Check the Apple TV listing for that Friday; a general cable-channel bundle does not automatically include the exclusive stream.
Saturday FOX or FS1 Availability depends on your local FOX affiliate and whether your package carries FS1.
Sunday night NBC and Peacock Some games require the Peacock app rather than a traditional channel feed.
Tuesday TBS Confirm that TBS is in your plan and that your local lineup carries it.
Select dates ESPN ESPN has a national 30-game package for the 2026–2028 rights period; the game list is date-specific.
Select events Netflix Netflix carries selected events rather than the entire regular-season schedule.

The 2026–2028 rights agreement also gives ESPN the ability to stream more than 150 out-of-market games, described as one per day, while NBCUniversal has Sunday Night Baseball, Sunday Leadoff, and all Wild Card Series. Rights are season-specific, so recheck the schedule for later years instead of assuming this arrangement continues unchanged.

Local team games: the ZIP code matters more than the brand name

For an in-market fan, the decisive question is which outlet owns your club’s local rights. MLB’s 2026 club guide identifies each team’s RSN or broadcast outlet and its in-market DTC option. All 30 clubs have a DTC option for 2026, and 14 teams added a new DTC option during the offseason.

That does not mean one app works nationwide. A DTC subscription is tied to the club and territory it serves. Some teams also put selected games on an over-the-air station. Before paying, open the club’s listing, enter your home location where requested, and compare the games you actually watch with the service’s blackout and national-game rules.

How national games affect local availability

A local RSN may carry most regular-season games but not a game assigned exclusively to FOX, ESPN, TBS, NBC/Peacock, Apple TV, or Netflix. Conversely, a national broadcast may be available while a local feed is restricted. Check the individual listing rather than treating “local coverage” as a promise for every date.

Service Documented MLB-related access Important limitations
Hulu + Live TV Lists MLB Network, ABC, FOX, ESPN, FS1, TBS, NBC, and select regional sports networks. Regional channels are determined by your home ZIP code. Local affiliates depend on physical location, and regional restrictions and blackouts apply. Verify the exact market lineup before subscribing.
Fubo Provides a ZIP-code Game Finder and states that all non-nationally televised out-of-market games are available through MLB.TV. The cited information does not establish access to every national MLB network. Use the Game Finder and the channel list for your specific plan and ZIP code.
DIRECTV CHOICE and higher packages include MLB Network, FOX, FS1, TBS, ESPN, NBC, and local RSNs where available. MySports is described as a lower-cost option for key MLB channels with ESPN Unlimited. Availability depends on package and market. Peacock, FOX One, or HBO Max may require separate subscriptions. MLB EXTRA INNINGS is satellite-only.
MLB.TV Out-of-market regular-season coverage; MLB’s 2026 subscription information also describes MLB Network access. Blackouts apply. Select postseason games require authentication through a participating pay-TV provider, and Wild Card games on NBC/Peacock are not live through MLB.TV.

Current official pages do not establish an apples-to-apples price ranking across these services. Promotional rates, taxes, add-ons, and regional sports fees can also change the total, so compare the complete checkout cost for your address rather than a headline price.

MLB.TV: what it does and does not solve

MLB.TV is the most direct option for fans who primarily follow teams outside their home market. Its central limitation is the blackout system. MLB says blackouts are based on geography and may use physical-location signals such as your IP address. A subscription therefore does not override local territorial rights.

What happens during a blackout

  • The live video feed for the affected game is unavailable in the restricted area.
  • The restriction can apply even when you pay for MLB.TV and can access other games.
  • Changing a device or account setting does not change the territorial rights attached to your location.

Postseason access in 2026

For eligible U.S. MLB.TV subscribers, select live postseason games require authentication through a participating pay-TV provider that carries FOX or TBS. Wild Card games on NBC/Peacock are not available live through MLB.TV. Live audio and full-game archives become available to subscribers 90 minutes after the game.

Can I watch MLB games without cable?

Yes, but “without cable” does not mean “with one subscription.” A streaming-only setup can combine a team’s DTC service for local games, MLB.TV for eligible out-of-market games, and one or more apps for national exclusives. The right combination depends on your team, location, and tolerance for switching services.

Best approach for an in-market fan

  1. Find your club in MLB’s 2026 team guide and identify its RSN, local station, and DTC option.
  2. Enter your ZIP code on the live-TV provider’s channel checker to confirm the RSN and local affiliates.
  3. List national games your team is scheduled to play and add only the apps or channels that carry those exclusives.
  4. Check blackout language before purchasing MLB.TV; it may add little value if most of your viewing is local.

Best approach for an out-of-market fan

  1. Use MLB.TV as the starting point for regular-season games outside your territory.
  2. Check blackout coverage for your physical location and the teams you follow.
  3. Add the services carrying national exclusives that matter to you, such as Apple TV, Peacock, Netflix, or a package with FOX, ESPN, TBS, and NBC.
  4. For the postseason, confirm whether your provider can authenticate the required FOX or TBS games.

Best approach for a fan who mainly watches national games

Build a calendar from the MLB.com/Watch listings. Select a live-TV plan only if it carries the channels on your calendar, then add standalone streaming services for games marked as exclusive. This avoids paying for a regional sports network you do not need.

What MLB games are on tonight? A reliable checking routine

Because assignments change by date and market, the schedule is more trustworthy than a generic channel list. Use this routine immediately before a game:

  1. Open MLB.com/Watch and select the date and matchup.
  2. Read the listed network or streaming service, including any “exclusive” label.
  3. Check whether the game is local to your location or subject to an out-of-market blackout.
  4. Open your provider’s channel lineup or ZIP-code Game Finder and confirm the exact plan tier.
  5. If the listing names a standalone app, verify that your account has an active subscription and that the app supports your device.

Repeat this process for playoff games. Postseason distribution can differ from regular-season distribution, and MLB.TV authentication requirements apply only to eligible games and participating providers.

Choosing among Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DIRECTV, and MLB.TV

Choose Hulu + Live TV when

  • Your ZIP code confirms the local affiliate or RSN you need.
  • You want one live-TV interface that includes several national sports channels.
  • You accept that regional restrictions and blackouts still apply.

Choose Fubo when

  • You want to test availability with its ZIP-code Game Finder before enrolling.
  • Your priority is a mix of live channels and eligible out-of-market access through MLB.TV.
  • You are willing to verify every national network separately rather than assuming the service carries them all.

Choose DIRECTV when

  • Your market offers the needed local RSN and you want MLB Network, FOX, FS1, TBS, ESPN, and NBC in a qualifying package.
  • MySports fits your channel needs and you understand which games require separate apps.
  • You are considering satellite-only MLB EXTRA INNINGS and have access to satellite service.

Choose MLB.TV when

  • You follow teams outside your home market.
  • You have checked blackout restrictions and accept that national and postseason games may require other services.
  • Delayed full-game archives and live audio are useful when a live feed is unavailable.

Blackout and playback troubleshooting

“The game is listed, but the video is blocked.”

Check your physical location and the game’s territorial designation first. MLB.TV can use IP-based location signals, so the restriction may be correct even when your billing address is elsewhere. If you are traveling, the location where you are watching can determine availability.

“My provider carries the channel, but I cannot find the game.”

Look for an alternate channel feed, a local affiliate, or a separate streaming-exclusive listing. National assignments can replace a local RSN feed, and some Sunday, Friday, or special-event games are app-only.

“I subscribed to MLB.TV for the playoffs.”

Confirm whether the game is one of the select postseason broadcasts requiring pay-TV authentication. For Wild Card games on NBC/Peacock, use the applicable NBC or Peacock access instead; MLB.TV does not provide those games live.

“The channel is missing from my live-TV plan.”

Recheck the plan tier and your ZIP-code lineup. A provider can list a network nationally while omitting it from a particular market, and local RSNs are not interchangeable.

Can an indoor TV antenna help?

An indoor TV antenna can receive local over-the-air broadcasts where the relevant station transmits to your address and the signal is strong enough. It may help with selected local games identified in the MLB team guide, but it does not provide subscription-only games, streaming apps, RSN feeds, or blackout relief. Treat it as a supplement, not a complete MLB solution.

How to budget for an MLB streaming setup

Do not compare services by base subscription alone. Your real cost can include a higher channel tier, a regional sports fee, a team DTC subscription, MLB.TV, and separate apps for exclusive games. The official information available for 2026 does not support a current cross-service price ranking, so calculate the total for your address and the games on your calendar.

Viewing pattern Likely components Main cost risk
One local team Team DTC or RSN access, plus occasional national-game apps Paying for a full live-TV bundle when the team’s DTC option is sufficient
Several out-of-market teams MLB.TV, plus services for national exclusives Blackouts for games in your territory
Mixed local and national viewing Local RSN or DTC service plus a live-TV plan or standalone apps Overlapping subscriptions and higher channel tiers
Postseason-focused viewing Provider carrying FOX/TBS and access to NBC/Peacock for Wild Card games Assuming MLB.TV alone supplies every playoff game

The practical verdict

The best service is the one that matches your club, ZIP code, and viewing pattern. For local games, start with the team’s RSN, broadcast station, or DTC option. For out-of-market regular-season games, evaluate MLB.TV and its blackouts. For national and postseason games, follow the date-specific network assignment and add only the required service. Confirm every important game on MLB.com/Watch before you subscribe or sit down to watch.
