Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut is the clearest broadly documented choice for experienced CPU and GPU builders who have nickel-plated copper contact surfaces. Conductonaut Extreme is the higher-power-density variant, but it is not a universal winner. Both are gallium-based, electrically conductive liquid alloys that demand precise application and complete separation from aluminum and exposed package components.

The right decision is therefore less about chasing a single conductivity number and more about matching the alloy to the cooler surface, containing it around the die, and accepting the maintenance and failure risks. If your cooler has an aluminum contact plate, do not use either product.

What liquid-metal thermal interface material does

A thermal interface material (TIM) fills microscopic gaps between a processor’s heat spreader or exposed die and the cooler base. Air in those gaps is a poor heat conductor; a TIM replaces it with a material that transfers heat more efficiently. Conventional thermal pastes are usually viscous compounds. Liquid-metal TIMs are electrically conductive metal alloys that remain fluid at normal operating temperatures.

Thermal Grizzly describes Conductonaut as a liquid-metal thermal compound based on a eutectic alloy. Its stated applications include CPUs, GPUs, notebooks and other integrated circuits. The alloy contains tin, gallium and indium. Because gallium-based alloys wet and react with some metals, the cooler’s contact material is a safety requirement rather than a minor compatibility detail.

Liquid metal can reduce thermal resistance when it is applied as an extremely thin, continuous film between compatible surfaces. It does not compensate for a warped cooler, inadequate mounting pressure, poor airflow or a defective heat pipe. A correct installation on the wrong surface can still damage hardware.

Conductonaut vs Conductonaut Extreme: how to choose

Choose Conductonaut for the documented general case

Conductonaut is the practical starting point when you have a nickel-plated copper cooler and need a liquid-metal TIM with clearly documented CPU and GPU use. Its published package sizes, material properties and application scope make it easier to plan a first installation. It remains a specialist product: the same electrical and surface-compatibility hazards apply regardless of its broad application list.

Consider Conductonaut Extreme for maximum power density

Thermal Grizzly positions Conductonaut Extreme for applications with maximum power density. That description is about the intended application space, not proof that it will produce a lower temperature in every system. If your cooler surface, containment method or application skill is marginal, the Extreme label does not remove those constraints. A well-contained installation of the appropriate alloy is preferable to selecting a more aggressive product that you cannot inspect or control.

Do not make the decision from conductivity alone

The cited manufacturer and Intel guidance do not establish one universal benchmark winner across CPUs and GPUs. A meaningful comparison would need the same processor or graphics chip, cooler, mounting pressure, amount of material, ambient temperature, workload and test method. Without those controls, a reported temperature difference cannot be transferred reliably to your system.

Surface compatibility: the decision that comes first

Nickel-plated copper

Thermal Grizzly recommends nickel-plated surfaces for long-term stability and specifically recommends nickel-plated copper bases for best long-term performance. Inspect the cooler specification or contact the manufacturer if the base material is unclear. A copper base with a nickel coating is a different surface from bare copper; do not assume that every copper-looking base is equivalent.

Aluminum

Neither Conductonaut nor Conductonaut Extreme should be used with an aluminum cooler. Thermal Grizzly explicitly states that Conductonaut must not be used with aluminum coolers. Indium likewise warns that gallium-based liquid metals should not contact aluminum. Gallium can attack aluminum, compromising the cooler surface and spreading the failure beyond a simple temperature problem.

Bare copper and other finishes

The supplied manufacturer guidance emphasizes nickel-plated surfaces for long-term stability rather than establishing a blanket approval for every bare-metal finish. If the contact surface is not clearly nickel-plated copper, treat compatibility as unresolved and obtain a material-specific confirmation before applying a gallium alloy. Do not infer approval from a cooler’s advertised heat-transfer performance.

Electrical safety around the CPU or GPU package

Liquid metal is not an electrically insulating paste. Conductonaut is explicitly listed as “electrically insulating: No.” A spill can bridge contacts or reach components that were never intended to touch the alloy.

Intel warns that liquid-metal TIM reaching unintended areas of a processor package, including capacitors on the package surface, may cause immediate issues or failures. It can also produce performance degradation or system instability over time. This is why application is a containment task as much as a thermal task.

  • Work on an unpowered system with the power supply disconnected and the battery removed where the device design permits.
  • Protect the area around an exposed die or heat spreader so a tiny excess cannot flow onto package components.
  • Use only the amount needed to form a thin film; a larger puddle increases the consequence of movement or pump-out.
  • Keep the applicator, syringe tip and work surface clean so fibers or debris do not carry alloy outside the contact area.
  • Inspect the perimeter under strong light before reinstalling the cooler and again after the first thermal test.

These precautions reduce risk but cannot make an electrically conductive liquid harmless. If you cannot confidently isolate and inspect the package, use a non-conductive TIM instead.

Is liquid metal safe on an aluminum heatsink?

No. Gallium-based liquid metal should not contact aluminum. The answer applies to both Conductonaut products. Replace the cooler, use a confirmed nickel-plated copper contact surface, or choose a conventional non-liquid-metal TIM that is specified for your aluminum heatsink. Do not rely on a thin protective-looking discoloration or a painted edge as evidence that the aluminum is isolated; the contact surface itself must be compatible.

How to plan a safe CPU installation

The exact mechanical layout differs between desktop processors, delidded chips and notebooks, but the risk controls are consistent. Read the cooler and processor service instructions first, and do not proceed if the base material cannot be verified.

  1. Confirm the surfaces. Verify that the cooler contact plate is nickel-plated copper and that the processor interface is appropriate for the product. Stop if any part that will touch the alloy is aluminum.
  2. Document the starting condition. Record the current idle and loaded temperatures, ambient temperature, workload and fan or pump settings. This gives you a controlled baseline rather than an anecdotal before-and-after.
  3. Remove the existing TIM completely. Use the cleaning method recommended for your hardware and allow both surfaces to dry. Residual paste, oils or fibers can prevent a uniform film.
  4. Mask and protect the package. Shield nearby capacitors, resistors and gaps where liquid could migrate. The protection must not prevent the cooler from sitting flat.
  5. Apply a minimal amount. Place a very small drop on the die or heat spreader and spread it into a visibly continuous, thin sheen with the supplied applicator. Do not leave a bead or pool at the edges.
  6. Check the cooler base. A matching thin film on the mating surface can help wetting, but excess material is a liability. Keep the alloy inside the intended footprint.
  7. Mount vertically and evenly. Lower the cooler without sliding it across the package, then tighten the screws in the manufacturer’s cross pattern and sequence. Uneven pressure can push liquid toward an edge.
  8. Inspect before powering up. Use bright light and magnification if available. Look for droplets, streaks or a shiny bridge beyond the die or heat spreader.
  9. Test gradually. Start with a short, known workload while watching temperature and system behavior. Stop immediately for instability, unexpected shutdowns or visible migration.
  10. Recheck after use. After the first substantial heat cycle, power down and inspect if the hardware design allows it. Long-term stability depends on the surface pair, mounting and containment, not only on the initial spread.

GPU-specific considerations

Graphics cards often expose a smaller die and place memory modules and other components close to the contact area. The physical margin for containing a conductive liquid is therefore limited. A cooler designed for a graphics card may also use a surface finish or mounting frame that differs from a CPU cooler; verify it independently rather than transferring assumptions from a desktop processor.

When a GPU uses a bare die, the liquid-metal film must cover the die without spilling onto the substrate. The cooler must sit flat across the die, and its mounting pressure must be even. If the card’s cooler is aluminum at the contact point, liquid metal is unsuitable regardless of the GPU’s temperature target.

Common failure modes and fixes

The cooler temperature gets worse after application

First shut down and inspect the interface. A patchy film, trapped debris, excessive material or uneven mounting pressure can leave dry spots or reduce contact. Clean both surfaces and reapply only after confirming that the base is compatible. Do not keep increasing the quantity; liquid metal works as a thin layer, and excess does not correct a warped mount.

The alloy beads up instead of wetting

Beading can indicate contamination, an incompatible finish or insufficient mechanical spreading. Remove the material, clean the surfaces according to the hardware instructions and verify the finish. If the surface is aluminum or otherwise unconfirmed, stop rather than forcing the alloy to spread.

The system becomes unstable

Power down immediately. Treat instability after installation as a possible electrical-contamination event, not merely a thermal-control problem. Inspect around the die, package and nearby components for a shiny film or droplet. Remove contaminated material only with a method that will not spread it farther; if you cannot verify complete cleanup, obtain professional hardware service.

The cooler base changes color or texture

Discoloration or surface change is a reason to stop and reassess compatibility and long-term stability. Record the condition, remove the alloy safely and confirm whether the base is nickel-plated copper. Do not continue operating simply because the computer still boots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance and replacement decisions

Liquid-metal installations deserve periodic visual inspection whenever the cooler can be removed without damaging the hardware. Look for migration beyond the intended footprint, dry areas, pooling or changes in the contact surface. A system that has been transported, repeatedly heated and cooled or serviced may need a fresh inspection even if temperatures appear normal.

Replace the liquid-metal interface if the cooler is removed, the film is visibly discontinuous, contamination is suspected or the contact surface has changed. Reusing a contaminated applicator or returning scraped alloy to the syringe risks introducing particles and spreading material outside the contact zone.

How to compare liquid-metal products responsibly

  • Surface compatibility: establish the exact metal and plating at the contact point.
  • Electrical safety: assume the alloy can short anything it touches and design containment accordingly.
  • Application control: evaluate whether you can dispense, spread and inspect a very small quantity.
  • Operating range: use the manufacturer’s stated range for the specific product; Conductonaut is listed at −50°C to +200°C.
  • Long-term stability: favor the surface pairing and mounting method documented by the manufacturer rather than an isolated temperature claim.
  • Power density: treat Conductonaut Extreme’s positioning as an intended-use distinction, not a guarantee of lower temperatures in every platform.
  • Evidence quality: require controlled tests using the same hardware and conditions before accepting a claimed ranking.

Bottom-line recommendation

For most experienced users with a verified nickel-plated copper CPU or GPU cooler, Conductonaut is the most straightforward liquid-metal starting point because its intended applications and material properties are documented. Conductonaut Extreme is worth considering when maximum power density is the design goal and the installer can provide equally careful containment. Neither belongs on aluminum, and neither is appropriate where conductive-liquid isolation cannot be guaranteed. The best liquid metal thermal paste for CPU/GPU is therefore the compatible, controllable option—not automatically the product with the most aggressive positioning.
