For most older 64-bit Windows 10 computers, Linux Mint with the Xfce desktop is the best starting point. It offers a familiar layout while remaining lighter than heavier desktop editions. Choose Xubuntu when you want an Ubuntu-based system with very modest published hardware requirements, Zorin OS Lite when an especially Windows-like transition matters, and antiX when the computer is too constrained for the other choices or uses older x86 hardware.

Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Normal security updates and technical support ended after that date, so replacing it with a maintained Linux distribution can keep an otherwise usable computer productive. The right choice depends on the processor architecture, memory, storage, graphics, firmware and how much configuration you are prepared to do.

Quick comparison

The figures below are published minimums or recommendations from each project, not independent performance tests. A computer that just meets a minimum may run, but it may feel slow once a browser, updates and several applications are open.

Linux Mint Xfce 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk minimum; 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk recommended for comfort Typical older 64-bit PC and the easiest desktop transition Mint identifies Xfce as its lightest desktop. Confirm that the processor is 64-bit before selecting a current edition.
Xubuntu Representative Xfce requirements: 1.0 GHz or faster PAE-capable CPU, 512 MiB RAM, 7.5 GB disk and 800×600 graphics Very light Ubuntu-based installation, especially when an LTS release is desired The figures come from Xfce Documentation 4.20; Xubuntu says computers built since 2007 generally run it.
Zorin OS Lite 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit CPU, 2 GB RAM, 15 GB storage for Core and 800×600 display Users who want a polished, Windows-familiar layout Lite uses Xfce. Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and is listed as supported through June 1, 2029.
antiX Specific RAM and storage minimums are not stated in the cited project description Very old or severely constrained Intel-AMD x86-compatible hardware It is fast, lightweight, systemd-free and elogind-free, based on Debian Stable, but its workflow is less like Windows.

None of these descriptions establishes a benchmark winner. They show design goals and hardware floors; actual speed depends on the processor, graphics, storage health, browser workload and background services.

Why replacing Windows 10 can make sense

An unsupported operating system becomes progressively harder to defend for everyday online use because ordinary security maintenance and technical assistance have ended. Installing Linux does not make old hardware faster by itself, but a lighter desktop can leave more memory and processor time for a browser, documents and media playback.

Linux distributions are complete operating systems rather than Windows themes. Applications, settings and driver handling will differ, and some Windows-only programs may need a Linux alternative. Before erasing Windows, identify the files and programs you cannot replace and decide whether you need a dual-boot arrangement, a separate computer or a compatibility layer. A live USB session lets you check basic hardware without changing the internal disk.

Linux Mint Xfce: the best default for a typical old PC

Mint Xfce is the safest recommendation when the machine is a conventional 64-bit laptop or desktop and the priority is a familiar environment. Xfce provides a traditional panel, application menu, taskbar and window controls, so the move from Windows requires less relearning than a more unusual desktop.

What makes it a good fit

  • The published memory and disk guidance leaves a clear distinction between “will install” and “comfortable for daily use.”
  • Xfce is Mint’s lightest desktop edition, making it more suitable for older hardware than heavier desktop choices.
  • The Mint workflow is conventional enough for family computers, office documents and general browsing.

Where to be cautious

Do not treat the minimum memory or disk figure as a performance guarantee. Modern websites can consume more memory than the operating system itself, especially with many tabs or web applications. If the computer has less memory than Mint’s published minimum or an exceptionally old processor, test another option in a live session rather than assuming installation will be pleasant.

Xubuntu: the light Ubuntu-based option

Xubuntu combines Ubuntu’s software ecosystem with the Xfce desktop. Its documentation recommends an LTS release when stability is more important than receiving the newest features. Xubuntu also says computers built since 2007 generally run it, although that statement is not a promise for every model or every peripheral.

Why choose it

  • It has the lowest stated memory, disk and graphics floors among the mainstream choices in this comparison.
  • The familiar Xfce layout is efficient without requiring the more specialized workflow of antiX.
  • Ubuntu-based packaging and documentation can be useful when you need instructions for common applications or hardware.

Important installation condition: Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Xubuntu’s installation documentation says that Windows systems using Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) must have RST turned off before installation. Check the firmware and Windows storage configuration before partitioning. Changing a storage mode without a backup can make the existing Windows installation unbootable, so copy important files first and follow the vendor’s instructions for that computer.

Zorin OS Lite: the most guided Windows-style transition

Zorin OS Lite uses Xfce and is designed around a polished, approachable desktop. It is a strong choice for someone who is less interested in learning a new desktop metaphor and more interested in finding a start menu, taskbar and familiar window behavior.

Support horizon

Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and lists support through June 1, 2029. That date applies to the stated release, not to every future or older Zorin edition, so check the release details when downloading.

Pro Tip: Maximize performance by reformatting to your optimal file system.(FAT32: Universal compatibility (files under 4GB); exFAT: Cross-platform large file support; NTFS: Advanced Windows features (encryption/compression))
  • LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.

Hardware and edition details

The published requirements specify a 64-bit dual-core processor and a minimum display of 800×600. The listed storage figure applies to the Core edition; other editions can require different installer media and storage. Choose Lite only when it is offered for the release you intend to install, and match the image to the computer’s architecture.

antiX: the fallback for genuinely weak hardware

antiX describes itself as “a fast, lightweight and easy to install systemd-free and elogind-free linux live CD distribution based on Debian Stable for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems.” That design makes it useful when a conventional desktop distribution is too demanding or when the computer is old enough that architecture and boot compatibility are the main obstacles.

Trade-offs

  • Its low-overhead approach can make an otherwise discarded computer usable for simple tasks.
  • It is less Windows-like than Mint Xfce, Xubuntu or Zorin Lite, so expect more unfamiliar menus, tools and defaults.
  • The project description does not provide the same RAM and storage numbers listed for the other distributions; test the live environment on the actual machine.

Select antiX because the hardware or workload calls for it, not because a lower requirement automatically means a better everyday experience. For a reasonably capable 64-bit PC, one of the Xfce-based choices will usually require less adjustment.

Choose by the computer and the user

Your situation Most sensible first test Reason
Older 64-bit laptop with ordinary memory and a Windows-like user Linux Mint Xfce Balanced familiarity and light resource use.
Computer near the lower end of the published mainstream requirements Xubuntu Its documented Xfce floor is especially modest; use an LTS release for stability.
User who wants the most guided visual transition from Windows Zorin OS Lite Windows-familiar layout and a clearly stated support horizon for version 18.1.
Very old or constrained Intel-AMD x86 machine antiX Lightweight Debian Stable base and a systemd-free design, with a less familiar interface.
Unknown hardware or uncertain graphics and Wi-Fi compatibility Live-test Mint Xfce or Xubuntu first You can check display, keyboard, network and sound before changing the disk.

Hardware checklist before downloading

  1. Identify the processor architecture. Confirm whether the CPU is 64-bit. This is essential for current editions and rules out some choices on very old machines. Record the processor model as well; a high clock speed does not guarantee good performance with modern browsers.
  2. Measure memory and free disk space. Compare installed RAM and available storage with the published figures in the table. Leave room for updates, personal files and applications rather than filling the disk to its limit.
  3. Check the display and graphics. Verify the panel can show at least the stated 800×600 floor for the distributions that publish one. If the screen has unusual scaling, test it from a live USB.
  4. Confirm USB boot support. The firmware must be able to start from a bootable USB flash drive. Find the computer’s one-time boot-menu key before you begin, and note whether it uses UEFI, legacy boot or a manufacturer-specific recovery system.
  5. Back up personal data. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, license information and any files stored outside the usual user folders. A full replacement installation can remove the Windows partition.
  6. Check storage mode. If Windows uses Intel RST, resolve that condition before installing Xubuntu and do not change it casually without a verified backup.

Prepare the Linux installer

Download the ISO image from the distribution’s official project site and select the edition that matches the computer. Use a USB flash drive for a Linux installer; writing an ISO to a USB is different from copying the ISO as an ordinary file.

Zorin’s official installer instructions require a USB drive with at least 4 GB for Core or Lite and 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite or Education. An 8 GB drive is therefore a practical general-purpose size for Core or Lite media, while it is not sufficient for the larger editions. Creating bootable media erases that USB, so use an empty drive or move its contents first.

Install safely: a practical sequence

  1. Finish the backup. Open several copied files on another device so you know the backup is readable. If you may need Windows later, create its recovery media before deleting the partition.
  2. Create the bootable USB. Use the distribution’s official media-creation instructions and the downloaded ISO. Let the process finish and safely eject the drive.
  3. Start the live session. Insert the USB, restart the computer and select the USB from the firmware boot menu. Choose the option to try the system without installing when offered.
  4. Test essential hardware. Check the internal display, keyboard, touchpad or mouse, wired or wireless network, speakers, headphone jack, suspend behavior and any printer or external monitor you rely on. Test a browser with the sites you actually use.
  5. Resolve storage settings. On a Windows installation affected by Intel RST, stop and follow Xubuntu’s documented procedure before partitioning. Do not proceed merely because the installer is visible.
  6. Launch the installer. Select language, keyboard and time-zone settings, then review the disk choices carefully. “Erase disk” removes the existing Windows installation; manual partitioning or dual boot requires more planning and free space.
  7. Review the final summary. Confirm the target disk, partition changes and user name before approving the write operation. This is the last point at which you can cancel without changing the internal storage.
  8. Restart and remove the USB when prompted. The computer should boot from the newly installed system. If it returns to the installer, shut down, remove the USB and start again.
  9. Apply offered updates and restart. Complete the distribution’s initial update process before restoring all files or installing a large collection of applications.

After installation: make an old PC easier to live with

Keep the workload realistic

Older hardware is most comfortable with a modest number of browser tabs and applications open at once. Close unused tabs, avoid loading several large web applications simultaneously and choose lightweight native programs when a browser version is unusually demanding.

Use the live test as a troubleshooting reference

If a device worked in the live session but not after installation, compare the installed system’s updates and settings with the live environment. If it failed in both, the problem is more likely to be hardware support, a cable, firmware configuration or a device-specific limitation rather than the partitioning step.

Leave recovery options

Keep the installation USB and your backup until the system has completed updates and you have opened important files. Record the distribution name and release so you can identify the correct recovery instructions later.

Common problems and what to do

The USB does not appear in the boot menu

Recreate the bootable media using the project’s instructions, try another USB port and check whether the firmware is set to the boot mode expected by the image. If the computer is extremely old, its firmware may support only one boot style; test the other official image or mode rather than repeatedly changing partitions.

The installer reports a storage or RST problem

Stop the installation, restore the backup if necessary and resolve Intel RST according to the Xubuntu documentation and the computer manufacturer’s instructions. Proceed only when the installer can safely see the intended storage configuration.

The desktop feels slow after a successful install

Check memory use with fewer applications running, remove unnecessary startup programs and avoid filling the disk. If the machine is below or near the published floor, try Xubuntu or antiX from a live USB. Do not infer that one distribution is universally faster: the available evidence consists of requirements and project descriptions, not controlled benchmarks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screen is clipped or unusable

Use the display settings from the live session and installed system to select a supported resolution. A panel below the published minimum can make an installer or desktop difficult to operate even when the operating system technically starts.

A required Windows program is missing

First check whether the publisher offers a Linux version or whether your files can be handled by a compatible office, graphics or media application. If a particular Windows-only program is indispensable, keep a supported Windows environment available rather than erasing it before testing your replacement workflow.

Final recommendation

Start with Linux Mint Xfce for a normal older 64-bit Windows 10 PC because it best balances a familiar desktop with modest resource use. Test Xubuntu when every bit of memory matters or you specifically want an Ubuntu-based LTS system. Pick Zorin OS Lite when user confidence and a Windows-like presentation outweigh the need for the smallest possible footprint, taking its June 1, 2029 support date into account. Reserve antiX for hardware that cannot comfortably handle those mainstream Xfce choices or for users willing to learn a less familiar workflow.
