Ubuntu is the best default Linux distribution for a jailbroken PS5. The ps5-linux project provides a ready-made Ubuntu 26.04 image named ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz and documents an Ubuntu-focused build and boot process. Arch Linux is the sensible alternative for experienced users who want more control, while Gentoo is better suited to kernel experimentation. CachyOS should be avoided for now because the current platform guide reports immediate kernel panics.
The distribution is only one part of the decision. Your PS5 model, firmware, loader support, storage and display all determine whether Linux can boot reliably. Check those prerequisites before downloading an image.
Which Linux distribution should you choose?
| Distribution | Best for | What the current PS5 Linux documentation supports |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 26.04 | Most users and the most reproducible setup | The ps5-linux project publishes a prebuilt image, ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz, and provides Ubuntu-specific build instructions. This is the project’s most turnkey path. |
| Arch Linux | Experienced Linux users who want a flexible base | The maintained community guide recommends Ubuntu or Arch while CachyOS is unreliable. Arch offers a flexible package and configuration model, but the loader’s prebuilt-image workflow is Ubuntu-focused. |
| Gentoo | Advanced users experimenting with custom kernels | The community guide documents Gentoo running with custom PS5 patches. It requires more manual kernel, image and maintenance work than Ubuntu or Arch. |
| CachyOS | Not recommended at present | The known-issues documentation reports immediate kernel panics and directs users toward Ubuntu or Arch instead. |
For a first installation, choose Ubuntu unless you already maintain Arch or Gentoo systems and specifically want to manage the kernel and image yourself. A distro that boots consistently is more valuable on PS5 than one with a theoretically faster package manager or a larger set of tuning options.

Check PS5 model and firmware compatibility first
The ps5-linux loader supports both PS5 Phat and PS5 Slim consoles, but only on a defined set of firmware versions. The loader documentation lists:
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty

- 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50 and 4.51
- 5.00, 5.02, 5.10 and 5.50
- 6.00, 6.02 and 6.50
- 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60 and 7.61
Firmware 4.00 and later in that list has M.2 support according to the project documentation. Firmware 1.xx and 2.xx support may be added later, but they are not listed as supported by the current loader. Firmware higher than 7.61 is not supported by that loader.
Jailbreak entry and Linux loading are separate checks
Being able to reach a jailbreak entry point does not automatically mean that the Linux loader will work. The UMTX repository describes a WebKit exploit based on CVE-2024-43102 and notes additional limitations on newer firmware; its documentation says firmware 6.00 and later require a different WebKit exploit in that repository. Verify both conditions independently:
- Confirm that your exact firmware has a working jailbreak entry path.
- Confirm that the ps5-linux loader lists that firmware as supported.
- Only then select a distribution and prepare storage.
Do not update the console while investigating compatibility. A firmware change can remove access to an entry path even if the hardware itself is unchanged.
Why Ubuntu is the safest default
A project-provided image reduces variables
The ps5-linux project supplies a prebuilt Ubuntu 26.04 image, ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz. Using that image avoids assembling a matching kernel, patches, drivers and userspace packages by hand. Fewer independently chosen components means fewer opportunities for a boot failure that is difficult to diagnose.

Ubuntu has the clearest documented build route
The loader’s build instructions are written around Ubuntu. If you need to rebuild the image, follow those instructions rather than translating every step from an unrelated distribution. This matters because PS5 Linux depends on platform-specific kernel patches and graphics support; a normal desktop installation image is not a substitute for the project image.
What Ubuntu does not solve
Ubuntu cannot compensate for an unsupported firmware, an incorrectly flashed drive, a display mode your monitor cannot handle or an exploit that does not work on your console. Treat Ubuntu as the lowest-risk software choice after compatibility has been established, not as a way to bypass the loader’s requirements.
When Arch Linux is the better choice
Arch is the practical alternative if you are comfortable maintaining a rolling Linux system, inspecting boot logs and rebuilding packages or kernels when the PS5 patches change. It gives experienced users a flexible base for selecting services, desktop components and graphics packages.
The trade-off is reproducibility. The loader’s turnkey image workflow is Ubuntu-oriented, so an Arch installation generally involves more decisions about the root filesystem, kernel, initramfs and package versions. Those choices are manageable for an Arch user but add failure points for someone installing Linux on PS5 for the first time.

Choose Arch when you already know how to recover a Linux installation from a console, can keep a known-good image available and want to tune the system yourself. Do not choose it solely because Arch is perceived as faster; the PS5-specific kernel and graphics stack determine whether the console boots and renders correctly.
Where Gentoo fits
Gentoo is documented by the community guide as running with custom PS5 patches. Its value is control: you can select compiler options, services and kernel configuration in detail. Its cost is time. Building an image, applying the correct PS5 changes, configuring the kernel and resolving dependencies are manual tasks, and a mistake can produce a non-booting image.
Gentoo is appropriate for developers and advanced Linux users who want to study or modify the PS5 kernel. It is not the efficient route to a working desktop, media system or development environment. Keep a known-good Ubuntu image on a separate drive so you can return to a reproducible setup if an experiment fails.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy you should avoid CachyOS for now
The current known-issues documentation reports immediate kernel panics with CachyOS and recommends Ubuntu or Arch instead. That is a platform-specific reliability warning, not a general judgment about CachyOS on ordinary PCs. Until the PS5 Linux maintainers report a fix, selecting it creates a predictable troubleshooting problem with no documented advantage over the supported alternatives.

Hardware and storage requirements
| Item | Requirement or recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| USB drive | At least 64 GB | The loader requires a USB drive with a minimum capacity of 64 GB for the Linux image. |
| External SSD | Strongly recommended | An SSD generally provides a more responsive Linux desktop and better sustained I/O than a basic flash drive. The project specifically recommends external SSD storage. |
| USB keyboard and mouse | Required | You need both peripherals to operate the Linux environment during setup and normal use. |
| Internal M.2 SSD | Optional; supported on firmware 4.00 and later in the loader’s list | The project supports M.2 storage for Linux on those firmware versions. An M.2 used for Linux is dedicated to Linux rather than PS5 game storage. |
| Display | HDMI monitor or television | Video output is available, but some resolutions and HDMI audio combinations have known issues. |
A 64GB drive is a minimum capacity, not a performance recommendation. Leave room for the compressed image, the expanded filesystem, updates and user data. If you use a USB flash drive, expect slower application launches and package operations than with an external SSD.
How to boot Ubuntu Linux on a jailbroken PS5
The documented process is a soft-mod workflow. It does not replace the console’s internal software, and the exploit must be run again after a reboot.
- Confirm compatibility. Record the PS5 model and exact firmware, then verify that the firmware appears in the loader’s supported list and that you have a working jailbreak entry path.
- Obtain or build the image. Use the project’s prebuilt Ubuntu 26.04 image,
ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz, or follow the project’s Ubuntu build instructions if you need a custom image. Advanced users can build an Arch or Gentoo image, but those paths require their own kernel and image configuration. - Prepare storage. Flash the image to a USB drive of at least 64GB, preferably an external SSD. Flashing overwrites the target drive, so confirm the device name before starting and back up anything stored on it.
- Connect input devices. Attach a USB keyboard and mouse. Use a direct console USB connection where possible rather than an unpowered hub, which can cause intermittent enumeration.
- Run the appropriate jailbreak entry path. The entry method depends on your firmware. Complete it before attempting to send the Linux loader.
- Send the loader. Transfer
ps5-linux-loader.elfto the console using the project’s documented loader procedure. - Wait for the indicator. The documented successful state is a static orange LED. Do not remove power while the loader is working.
- Power on to boot Linux. With the prepared storage connected, start the console and allow the Linux image to boot. The first boot can take longer while the image initializes.
The exact jailbreak entry screen and transfer utility vary by firmware, so use the loader’s instructions for your version rather than substituting a generic PS5 exploit guide. The distribution choice begins after those prerequisites are satisfied.
What hardware is reported to work, and what remains imperfect?
| Component or feature | Reported status | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI video | 4K at 60 Hz is reported working | Basic 4K desktop output is possible, but individual displays can still fail at 1440p or 2160p. |
| Audio | Audio works in general; HDMI audio is missing on some monitors | If your monitor has no sound, test a different display or audio path before changing distributions. |
| USB | Working | USB storage, keyboard and mouse are usable when connected correctly. |
| Ethernet | Working | Wired networking is the dependable choice for updates and downloads. |
| Wi-Fi | Unstable | Expect dropouts or inconsistent throughput; use Ethernet for installation and large transfers. |
| AMD graphics | RDNA2 graphics are reported working | Use the PS5-specific image and kernel; a stock PC graphics stack is not guaranteed to initialize the console GPU. |
| Hardware video decode | Reported working | Applications that use supported decode paths can reduce CPU load, subject to their own Linux support. |
| CPU/GPU controls | Boost controls are reported available | Changing clocks or boost behavior can affect heat and stability; use conservative settings until the base installation is proven stable. |
| DualSense | Working over USB | Use a wired connection first. Wireless behavior is not established by the cited documentation. |
| Screen saver | Broken | Disable the screen saver or use display power settings that do not depend on it. |
External SSD versus the internal M.2
External SSD
An external SSD is the recommended starting point because it is easy to replace, keeps Linux separate from the console’s internal storage and works with the documented USB-image workflow. It also lets you keep multiple images: for example, a known-good Ubuntu drive and a second drive for Arch or Gentoo testing.
Best Value

Internal M.2
The loader documentation identifies M.2 support on firmware 4.00 and later in its supported list. An M.2 configured for Linux is dedicated to Linux rather than PS5 game storage, so do not plan to use the same Linux M.2 as a normal game-storage expansion. Verify the project’s compatibility requirements before buying or installing an M.2 drive.
USB flash drive
A flash drive meets the 64GB minimum, but it is the least attractive option for regular desktop use. It is useful for testing whether your firmware and loader work before investing in an SSD. Once the boot path is confirmed, moving the same image workflow to an external SSD usually improves responsiveness.
Is this a dual-boot system?
Linux on a jailbroken PS5 is best understood as an exploit-assisted soft-mod boot, not a conventional PC-style boot menu. The documented workflow does not modify the internal SSD, so the installed PS5 operating system remains intact. After a reboot, however, you must run the jailbreak entry path and send the Linux loader again before Linux will boot.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, you can retain PS5 OS and Linux and choose which environment to start on each exploit-assisted session. You do not get a permanent bootloader that automatically offers both systems after every power-on. Keep the console’s normal shutdown and recovery procedures available, and never assume that a Linux crash has changed the internal PS5 installation.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The loader does nothing
- Recheck the exact firmware against the supported list; versions above 7.61 are not supported by the loader.
- Confirm that the jailbreak entry path completed before sending
ps5-linux-loader.elf. - Verify that the image was flashed to the intended USB device and that the drive is at least 64GB.
- Disconnect USB hubs and connect the storage, keyboard and mouse directly.
- Try an external SSD if a flash drive repeatedly fails during boot.
The console reaches a kernel panic
- If you selected CachyOS, switch to the project-provided Ubuntu image or a documented Arch setup; the known-issues report specifically identifies immediate CachyOS panics.
- For a custom Arch or Gentoo image, return to a known-good image before changing multiple kernel options at once.
- Check that the kernel and patches match the PS5 Linux documentation for your firmware.
The screen is blank or the resolution is wrong
- Try a display mode known to work for your monitor rather than forcing 1440p or 2160p, which are reported problematic on some displays.
- Test another HDMI display or cable to separate a display-compatibility issue from a boot issue.
- Allow extra time for first boot before assuming that a blank screen is a failed image.
There is no sound
- HDMI audio is missing on some monitors according to the hardware status reports.
- Test a television or another monitor before rebuilding Linux.
- Use USB audio or another supported output if your display’s HDMI audio path is the problem.
Networking keeps dropping
Wi-Fi is reported unstable. Use Ethernet for the initial setup, system updates and large downloads. Treat wireless as a convenience rather than a requirement for a reliable installation.
The screen saver behaves incorrectly
The screen saver is reported broken. Disable it and configure ordinary display-power settings instead of relying on the saver to blank the screen.
Choose a distribution by your experience level
| Your situation | Recommended choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the highest chance of a first-boot success | Ubuntu 26.04 image | It is the project-provided image with the clearest documented workflow. |
| You administer Arch systems and want package or service control | Arch Linux | The community guide supports it, but you accept more manual maintenance. |
| You are developing kernels or need deep build control | Gentoo | Custom PS5-patched kernels are documented, with substantially more setup work. |
| You are considering CachyOS for perceived performance | Do not use it currently | The current known-issues report records immediate kernel panics and recommends Ubuntu or Arch. |
What to keep before you experiment
- Keep the original PS5 firmware unchanged once you have confirmed a compatible version.
- Retain a verified Ubuntu image even if Arch or Gentoo is your long-term goal.
- Use Ethernet during setup when possible because Wi-Fi is unstable.
- Record the firmware, loader version and image used for every successful boot.
- Expect to rerun the exploit after every reboot; this is normal for the soft-mod workflow.
For most jailbroken PS5 owners, the decision is therefore straightforward: verify that the console is on a loader-supported firmware, use the project-provided Ubuntu 26.04 image on a 64GB-or-larger drive (preferably an external SSD), and move to Arch only when you have a specific reason to manage the system yourself. Gentoo is an advanced project, and CachyOS is presently the wrong choice for a reliable PS5 Linux installation.
