For most adult builders, the right choice comes down to the car and mechanism you want on display: choose the McLaren P1 (42172) for its seven-speed gearbox, V8 engine, opening doors, and adjustable rear wing; choose the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115) for an eight-speed sequential transmission, V12 engine, steering, suspension, and scissor doors. Both are official 18+ Technic sets, and neither can be called the universal winner without independent testing of build quality or difficulty.

The Sián is a 2020 release and LEGO’s US product page snapshot showed it sold out when accessed, while the P1 appeared in LEGO’s current US Technic catalog with an add-to-bag option. Stock and prices change, so verify the model number, region, seller, and condition before paying.

How to choose between the P1 and Sián

Start with the real car you want to own in miniature

These sets represent different design languages. The McLaren P1 is the better thematic match if you want a hybrid-era McLaren silhouette and a display model centered on a seven-speed gearbox, V8 pistons, and a movable rear wing. The Lamborghini Sián is the stronger fit if the defining details for you are a V12, scissor doors, and visible steering and suspension functions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That preference matters more than a small difference in piece count. The P1 has 3,893 pieces, while the Sián has 3,696; the available official material does not establish that the extra 197 pieces make the P1 more difficult or mechanically richer overall.

Use the functions as your decision filter

  • Gearbox interest: the P1 uses a seven-speed gearbox with a shifter drum; the Sián uses an eight-speed sequential transmission.
  • Engine presentation: the P1 has a V8 piston engine; the Sián has a V12 engine with moving pistons.
  • Exterior interaction: the P1 has opening doors and an adjustable rear wing; the Sián has scissor doors.
  • Chassis functions: LEGO explicitly lists steering and front and rear suspension for the Sián. The official P1 description supplied for this comparison emphasizes its gearbox, engine, doors, and wing rather than a matching list of suspension functions.

Let availability decide only after the subject is right

The Sián’s 2020 release date helps explain why it may require a secondary-market search or a wait for restocking. LEGO’s page snapshot marked it sold out, but that status is a point-in-time storefront observation, not a prediction of future stock or resale value. The P1 appeared with an add-to-bag option in LEGO’s current US Technic catalog snapshot, making it the more straightforward official-channel candidate at the time checked.

McLaren P1 (42172): the gearbox-and-aero choice

What LEGO officially specifies

LEGO lists the McLaren P1 as an 18+ Technic set containing 3,893 pieces. The Fall 2024 US retail catalog describes a seven-speed gearbox with a shifter drum, a V8 piston engine, opening doors, and an adjustable rear wing. The current US Technic catalog snapshot displayed a $449.99 price and an add-to-bag option; the Fall 2024 catalog’s $449.99 figure is a historical US list-price reference, not a promise that every retailer or date will show the same amount.

Why those functions matter during a long build

A seven-speed gearbox gives the build a strong mechanical theme. The shifter drum is the indexing element that coordinates sequential gear selection, so builders who enjoy aligning shafts, selectors, and linkages may find the transmission more compelling than a model whose appeal is primarily exterior styling. The V8 pistons add a visible moving-engine payoff when the drivetrain is operated.

Opening doors turn the model from a static shell into an interactive display object. The adjustable rear wing adds another adjustment point: you can present the P1 in a cleaner parked configuration or with the aero element positioned differently. Those functions are official descriptions; there is no independent evidence here about how smooth, reliable, or difficult each mechanism is in practice.

Who should choose the P1

  • Builders who specifically want a McLaren P1 rather than a Lamborghini.
  • Anyone most interested in a seven-speed gearbox and shifter-drum mechanism.
  • Displays where opening doors and an adjustable rear wing will be used as part of the presentation.
  • Buyers who prefer an official LEGO storefront listing that showed an add-to-bag option when accessed.

Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115): the V12-and-suspension choice

What LEGO officially specifies

LEGO identifies the Sián as an 18+ set with 3,696 pieces. Its official product page describes an eight-speed sequential transmission, a V12 engine with moving pistons, steering, front and rear suspension, and scissor doors. LEGO gives the completed model’s footprint as over 5 inches (13 centimeters) high, 23 inches (60 centimeters) long, and 9 inches (25 centimeters) wide.

The official instructions index identifies set 42115 as a 2020 release. That date is useful when evaluating listings: a sealed example, a used example, or a replacement-parts situation should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a currently stocked set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why these functions matter during a long build

The eight-speed sequential transmission is the Sián’s headline mechanical feature. Its sequential format is designed around ordered gear selection, while the V12’s moving pistons provide a visible engine action. Steering and both front and rear suspension give the chassis more explicitly listed moving systems than a purely body-focused display model.

Scissor doors are the distinctive display interaction. They open on an upward pivot rather than swinging conventionally, so allow clearance above the model when planning a shelf. LEGO’s dimensions make the Sián a substantial display: reserve at least the stated 23-by-9-inch length-and-width envelope, plus operating room for doors and access to the steering or transmission controls.

Who should choose the Sián

  • Builders whose priority is the Lamborghini Sián design and V12 identity.
  • Anyone who wants LEGO-listed steering, front suspension, and rear suspension in the same model.
  • Displays where scissor-door operation is a central visual feature.
  • Buyers prepared to check availability carefully because the LEGO US page snapshot showed the set sold out.

Display planning for adult builders

Measure the shelf before buying

The Sián’s official dimensions are large enough to rule out many shallow shelves: it is over 23 inches long and 9 inches wide. Measure the usable surface rather than the nominal shelf size, and leave room to reach the model without knocking adjacent objects. The supplied sources do not give a comparable P1 footprint, so do not assume both models require identical space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for moving features

Choose a display position that lets you demonstrate the feature you paid for. The P1 needs clearance around its opening doors and access to its adjustable rear wing. The Sián needs overhead and side clearance for scissor doors, as well as enough access to operate steering and inspect the suspension. If the model will be displayed behind glass, check door travel and shelf depth before final placement.

Decide whether interaction or preservation comes first

Interactive functions are most useful when the model remains reachable. A high shelf may protect the car from accidental contact but makes the gearbox, steering, doors, and wing harder to demonstrate. A lower, stable surface improves access but requires more care around dust, pets, children, and routine cleaning. These are display decisions rather than claims about model durability; the official sources do not provide long-term wear testing.

Availability, pricing, and listing checks

Read storefront prices as dated observations

The P1’s $449.99 figure appears in LEGO’s Fall 2024 US retail catalog and in the current US Technic catalog snapshot accessed for this guide. The Sián page snapshot also displayed $449.99, but marked the product sold out. Because one figure is tied to a 2024 catalog and the storefront statuses are volatile, treat both as dated US references. Taxes, shipping, regional pricing, promotions, and later price changes can alter the amount you actually pay.

Verify secondary-market Sián listings

For a 2020 set, ask the seller to identify 42115 exactly and state whether the box is sealed, opened, or incomplete. Request clear photographs of the box seals and major bags when condition matters. Confirm that the listing includes the building instructions or provide for an official replacement download through LEGO’s 42115 instructions page. Do not infer aftermarket value from LEGO’s sold-out label; the supplied official material contains no market-wide resale data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck the P1’s official status

The P1’s add-to-bag appearance was captured in a LEGO US catalog snapshot, not guaranteed inventory. Before checkout, confirm that the product page still identifies set 42172, that the displayed currency is appropriate for your region, and that shipping and return terms meet your needs.

Where the McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) fits

The McLaren Formula 1 Race Car is a useful adjacent option for adult builders who actually want a single-seat race car. LEGO lists it as an 18+ model with 1,434 pieces and describes a V6 piston engine, steering, suspension, and a differential. LEGO’s official page marks it retired.

It should not be counted as a road-going supercar in a ranking of the P1 and Sián. Choose it for F1 subject matter and its race-car chassis functions, not as a substitute for the road-car bodywork and identity of the two supercar sets above. Its retired status also makes current availability a separate question from the P1-versus-Sián decision.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Choose the subject first. Decide whether the McLaren P1 or Lamborghini Sián is the car you want to look at for years; do not let a small piece-count difference make that decision for you.
  2. Match the mechanism to your interests. Select the P1 for the seven-speed gearbox, V8, opening doors, and adjustable wing; select the Sián for the eight-speed sequential transmission, V12, steering, suspension, and scissor doors.
  3. Check the exact set number. Confirm 42172 for the P1, 42115 for the Sián, or 42141 for the separate F1 race car.
  4. Check age and inventory. Both supercars are 18+ sets. For the Sián, account for its 2020 release and the sold-out LEGO snapshot; for the P1, recheck the current storefront rather than relying on an old catalog capture.
  5. Confirm the regional price. Treat the $449.99 figures as US observations tied to specific dates and pages, not universal current prices.
  6. Measure the display area. The Sián needs space for its stated 23-by-9-inch footprint and moving scissor doors. Obtain a current P1 dimension listing before committing to a tight shelf.
  7. Inspect condition when buying used. Ask about completeness, sorted bags, instructions, stickers, and box condition; a sealed, complete, or partially built set has different practical value.
  8. Plan replacement documentation. LEGO’s official instructions index provides a direct reference for the Sián if paper instructions are missing.

What the official evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The product pages and catalogs establish set identity, age rating, piece count, listed functions, one stated display size, dated prices, and LEGO’s storefront status at the time accessed. They do not establish an independently measured build time, comparative difficulty, long-term mechanism durability, market-wide price, resale value, or an objective “best overall” ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters for adult builders. A 3,893-piece model may demand more table space than a 3,696-piece model, but piece count alone does not reveal how repetitive the assembly feels or how precisely a gearbox must be aligned. Likewise, a sold-out page can reflect a temporary inventory state rather than permanent scarcity. Use the official specifications to narrow the choice, then base any condition or price judgment on the specific listing you can actually buy.

Final verdict

Choose the McLaren P1 (42172) if its car identity, seven-speed shifter-drum gearbox, V8 pistons, opening doors, and adjustable rear wing are the experiences you want—and especially if an official LEGO listing is available in your region. Choose the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115) if the V12, eight-speed sequential transmission, steering, suspension, and scissor doors matter more, while accepting that its 2020 release and recorded sold-out status may make acquisition less direct. Treat the McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) as a separate retired race-car option, not a third road-going supercar contender.
