For most players who want to start today, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the simplest legal route to the original Nintendo 64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It works on a current Switch system, requires no legacy hardware, and remains available for as long as the membership is active. If you already bought the game digitally on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo still allows redownloads. Original Nintendo 64 cartridges and physical copies of Ocarina of Time 3D are legitimate second-hand alternatives. If you want Nintendo’s rebuilt presentation instead, the Switch 2 remake is listed for November 5, 2026, so it is not playable before that date.
What is available now, and what requires waiting?
Nintendo announced on June 12, 2026 that Ocarina of Time would return “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2” in 2026. Nintendo’s current store listing gives the physical Switch 2 edition a November 5, 2026 release date. Until that launch, the remake cannot be played through an official Nintendo release.

The important distinction is that “playing Ocarina of Time” can mean preserving the N64 game, playing the 3DS remake, or waiting for the substantially rebuilt Switch 2 edition. Those are different experiences, not interchangeable labels.
Option 1: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Why it is the default recommendation
Nintendo’s support information says Expansion Pack members receive access to the Nintendo 64 Classics library. Ocarina of Time is therefore available through the official classic-games application rather than as a separately sold Switch download. Active members retain access while subscribed; Nintendo says it has no plans to sell these classic games individually outside the service.
#1 Best Overall
- This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
- The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
- “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes
This is the lowest-friction choice for someone who already owns a Switch or Switch 2. You do not need to locate a functioning Nintendo 64, inspect a used cartridge, or find an old 3DS. It also lets you begin immediately instead of waiting for November 5.
How to start
- On your Switch, open the Nintendo eShop and obtain a Nintendo Switch Online membership that includes the Expansion Pack tier. If you already subscribe to the standard tier, confirm that your plan has been upgraded to Expansion Pack.
- Open the Nintendo 64 Classics application associated with Nintendo Switch Online. If it is not installed, download it from the Nintendo Switch Online area of the eShop.
- Launch the application while signed in to the Nintendo Account holding the active membership.
- Select Ocarina of Time from the Nintendo 64 library and start a save file. The game is the N64-era version, not the forthcoming Switch 2 rebuild.
Offline play and the seven-day check
The classic application supports offline play, but Nintendo requires the console to connect to the internet to verify membership at least once every seven days. Before a trip or a period without reliable connectivity, launch the application while online so the membership check is current. If more than seven days pass without verification, reconnect the console before the game will authenticate again.
What this route does and does not provide
- Provides: immediate access to the Nintendo 64 version on current Nintendo hardware, with no need to buy a used cartridge.
- Requires: an active Expansion Pack membership and periodic online verification.
- Does not provide: the visual overhaul, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music or modern camera movements Nintendo lists for the Switch 2 remake.
- Does not create permanent ownership: access continues while the qualifying membership is active.
Controller considerations
The original game was designed around the Nintendo 64 controller layout. A controller with an N64-style arrangement can make the classic controls feel more familiar, especially for players who remember the central analog stick and three-pronged shape. Nintendo’s official information does not identify a particular third-party controller model, so check compatibility and availability separately rather than assuming every retro-style pad works with Switch.
Option 2: Redownload a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS digital purchase
The eShop closure does not erase prior ownership
Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation FAQ says new purchases on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS ended on March 27, 2023. That closure affects buying, not the ability to retrieve software already associated with your account. Nintendo says previously purchased games and downloadable content can still be redownloaded, and that this capability remains available for the foreseeable future.
Wii U digital ownership
If you purchased the Wii U release before the closure, use the same Nintendo Account and Wii U system that held the purchase. Open the Wii U eShop’s redownload area, locate the title in your purchase history, and start the download. The Wii U listing describes this edition as a reproduction of the original game, with some behavior and presentation differences from the Nintendo 64 release.
This is a useful route when your goal is to play a legally acquired copy you already own and you still have the required console. It is not a way to buy the game for the first time: the store no longer accepts new Wii U purchases.
Nintendo 3DS digital ownership
If you bought Ocarina of Time 3D digitally before March 27, 2023, redownload it from the purchase history on the original Nintendo 3DS-family system and account. This is the handheld remake, with presentation and control changes compared with the N64 game. A 3DS-family console is required; the download does not transfer into the Switch Nintendo 64 application.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Redownload checklist
- Use the Nintendo Account that originally purchased the game.
- Use the same hardware family: Wii U purchases require Wii U, and 3DS purchases require a Nintendo 3DS-family system.
- Confirm that the console has enough storage for the download and any available update.
- Expect redownload access, not a new-purchase option. If the title is absent from purchase history, a different account may have bought it.
- Keep the console connected long enough for Nintendo’s account and license checks to complete.
Option 3: Buy a physical Nintendo 64 cartridge second-hand
What you get
The original Ocarina of Time launched for Nintendo 64 in 1998. A genuine cartridge played on a working Nintendo 64 gives you that original release rather than a modern emulation service or a later remake. This is the clearest choice when preservation of the N64 presentation matters more than convenience.
What to check before buying
Because this route uses the second-hand market, legality and usability depend on obtaining an authentic cartridge and suitable hardware. Examine clear photographs of the cartridge label, shell, screws and board when possible. Ask whether the seller accepts returns if the game fails to boot. Check the region of the cartridge against your console, since regional compatibility can affect whether the system accepts it. Also verify that your television or adapter setup can display a Nintendo 64 signal.
- Authenticity: reproduction shells and counterfeit boards exist; an unusually low price or poor-quality label warrants caution.
- Condition: inspect for cracked plastic, corrosion, damaged contacts or a label that has been heavily exposed to moisture.
- Console condition: a cartridge cannot compensate for a failing Nintendo 64, worn controller or unsuitable video cable.
- Save reliability: ask whether the seller has tested saving and loading, not merely starting the game.
- Region and accessories: confirm that the cartridge, console and any power or video accessories match your region and setup.
Advantages and trade-offs
Ownership is not tied to a subscription, and the cartridge remains usable whenever you have compatible hardware. The trade-off is that acquisition, maintenance and troubleshooting are your responsibility. Used-market prices, availability and condition are not fixed, so no single cost can be stated reliably for every region or date.
Option 4: Buy a physical Nintendo 3DS copy of Ocarina of Time 3D
Why it is different from the N64 version
Ocarina of Time 3D is a handheld remake, not simply the N64 cartridge moved to another screen. It changes presentation and controls and is designed for Nintendo 3DS-family hardware. If you want a revised version now but do not want to subscribe to Switch Online, a legitimate physical cartridge is the relevant second-hand option.
Buying and testing guidance
Check that the listing is for a genuine Nintendo 3DS cartridge and that the seller identifies the region. Ask whether the cartridge has been tested in a 3DS-family console and whether it loads and saves correctly. A used cartridge does not include a 3DS system, charger or stylus, so price the complete setup you need rather than the game alone. As with the N64 route, condition and availability vary by marketplace and region.
Who should choose it
- Choose the 3DS copy if you specifically want the handheld remake’s revised presentation and already own compatible hardware.
- Choose the N64 version through Switch Online or an original cartridge if preserving the 1998 game is your priority.
- Choose the Switch 2 release if you want Nintendo’s newest rebuild and can wait until its listed launch date.
Option 5: Wait for the Switch 2 remake
Launch timing
Nintendo’s current store page lists November 5, 2026 for the physical Switch 2 edition. As of October 18, 2026, that date is in the future, so the remake is not a legal way to play today. A reader who can wait only a few weeks has a clearly dated official option rather than an uncertain “sometime in 2026” window.
What Nintendo says is being rebuilt
The store description promises “completely overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, and symphonic orchestral music.” It also lists enhanced controls and modern camera movements. These features define a new presentation of the adventure, not a preservation-focused Nintendo 64 release.
Rank #3
- Play the original Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
- Or the Master Quest edition with many bonus features
Hardware requirement
Nintendo describes the remake as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. A standard Switch is therefore not enough for this release. Plan around access to a Switch 2 and a new game purchase when the edition launches; the official material supplied for this guide does not establish a launch price.
Recommended Free Tools
Reasons to wait
- You want the most contemporary graphics, audio, dialogue and camera design Nintendo has announced.
- You prefer a new release over emulation, legacy hardware or a second-hand copy.
- You already have, or plan to obtain, a Switch 2 and do not need to play before November 5.
Reasons not to wait
- You want to experience the original N64 game immediately.
- You have limited internet access and do not want a service that checks membership every seven days.
- You already own a Wii U or 3DS digital copy and can redownload it at no additional purchase.
- You specifically want physical ownership of the 1998 cartridge or the 3DS remake.
Which version matches your goal?
| Your priority | Most suitable route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play the original game today with minimal setup | Switch Online + Expansion Pack | It is available on current Switch hardware and avoids legacy equipment. |
| Use a purchase you already made | Wii U or 3DS redownload | Nintendo continues to support redownloads for previously purchased software. |
| Preserve the 1998 Nintendo 64 experience | Authentic N64 cartridge | It uses the original release and does not depend on a subscription. |
| Play the handheld remake before November 5 | Physical Ocarina of Time 3D | It is a separate 3DS remake available through the second-hand market. |
| Get Nintendo’s newly rebuilt presentation | Switch 2 remake | It adds overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls and modern camera movements. |
Legal and practical pitfalls to avoid
Do not confuse availability with ownership
Switch Online supplies access while the qualifying membership is active; it is not the same as buying a permanent digital copy. Conversely, a cartridge is a physical purchase but still depends on compatible, functioning hardware. Decide whether you value immediate convenience, ongoing ownership or the ability to replay without an account check.
Do not treat closed eShops as new stores
The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops stopped accepting purchases on March 27, 2023. Listings, download codes or instructions claiming that you can buy a new copy directly through those stores are outdated. The legitimate digital route is redownloading software already associated with your account.
Do not assume every “Ocarina of Time” listing is the same game
A listing may refer to the Nintendo 64 release, the Wii U reproduction, Ocarina of Time 3D or the Switch 2 remake. Confirm the platform and edition before paying. The N64 and Wii U versions preserve the original design more closely, the 3DS release is a handheld remake, and the Switch 2 edition is a new rebuild with the features Nintendo has announced.
Be cautious with unofficial downloads
Unlicensed ROM downloads, unauthorized reproductions and modified copies are not substitutes for the official routes described here. They also introduce risks that legitimate cartridges, Nintendo’s classic-games service and Nintendo account redownloads avoid.

- Do you need to play before November 5, 2026? If no, wait for the Switch 2 remake. If yes, continue.
- Do you own a Switch or Switch 2? If yes, Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the fastest official route to the N64 version.
- Do you already own a Wii U or 3DS digital copy? Redownload it through the original account instead of trying to purchase it again.
- Do you want physical ownership? Look for an authentic N64 cartridge or 3DS cartridge and verify hardware, region and condition before buying.
- Which presentation do you want? Pick N64 for the 1998 original, 3DS for the handheld remake, or Switch 2 for Nintendo’s announced rebuilt edition.
Bottom line for October 18, 2026
Start with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you want the original Ocarina of Time on current hardware today. Use a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS redownload if you already own that digital edition. Choose an authentic second-hand cartridge when physical ownership or original hardware matters. The Switch 2 remake is the modern alternative, but Nintendo’s listed November 5, 2026 release date means waiting is required.
