There is no single best TV-show download service for everyone. The right choice is the service that offers your specific episodes in your country, on your device, under your plan, with an expiry rule you can accept. Netflix has the clearest broadly documented support across phones, tablets and Chromebooks; Apple TV is strongest when you already use Apple devices or want an authorized purchase option; Disney+ supports mobile offline viewing for eligible plans. Treat every download as an in-app license, not as a permanent video file.
What “TV show download” means in a legal service
Legal streaming services normally let you save an episode inside their app for temporary offline playback. The encrypted download stays tied to your account, the app and the device. You generally cannot move it to a USB drive, open it in another player or keep it after the service removes the title. An authorized purchase in a digital store is a different arrangement, but it still may be subject to distribution-rights changes.

Download rights are negotiated separately from streaming rights. A series can play online while its episodes are blocked from downloading because of licensing terms, regional restrictions, exclusivity, popularity, cost or other availability factors. A service’s catalog page is therefore not proof that every episode is downloadable.
Quick comparison of the main legal options
| Service | Confirmed offline support | Documented devices or apps | Important limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Many Netflix and partner movies and TV shows can be downloaded. | Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store. | Some titles stream but cannot be downloaded. Fire tablets require Fire OS 7 or later. Netflix says downloads are unavailable on Windows devices. | People who want a large, app-based offline library on mobile devices or a supported Chromebook. |
| Apple TV | Shows can be downloaded through the Apple TV app; availability depends on the subscription, channel and title. | iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC and Apple Vision Pro through supported Apple TV apps. | Downloads do not work in the Apple TV app on Apple TV 4K or HD, smart TVs, streaming devices or tv.apple.com. Most channel downloads last up to 30 days, with some expiring sooner; certain subscription titles expire 48 hours after playback starts or 30 days after download, whichever comes first. | Apple-device households, channel subscribers and viewers who also want an authorized purchase library. |
| Disney+ | Supported mobile devices can download eligible content for offline viewing. | Disney+ mobile apps; the exact supported-device list is regional and can change. | Offline downloads require an eligible plan. Disney+ offers download-quality choices, but plan and country conditions must be checked on the current regional help page. | Subscribers whose plan includes downloads and who primarily watch on supported mobile devices. |
| Prime Video and other services | Offline support is commonly discussed, but current conditions were not verified in the material used for this guide. | Not stated here. | Do not assume a device list, plan requirement, title limit or expiry period. Confirm all of them in the service’s official help center for your country. | Only after you verify the exact show, device and plan locally. |
Netflix: the broadest documented device coverage
Netflix says its Android, iPhone, iPad, Google Chromebook and Amazon Fire apps can download selected movies and TV shows from Netflix and other providers. Its availability guidance explains that a title may be streamable but not downloadable. Reasons can include exclusive rights, rights that are not available for purchase, popularity, cost, seasonal licensing or localized availability.
Device compatibility matters. Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets and Chromebooks with the Google Play Store as download devices. Fire tablet downloads require Fire OS 7 or later. Netflix also states that downloads are unavailable on Windows devices, so installing the Windows app will not solve an offline-viewing requirement.
Before a flight or trip, open the Netflix app on the device you will carry, search for the exact season and episode, and look for the download icon. If the icon is missing, streaming access does not guarantee an offline copy.
Apple TV: understand the app and hardware distinction
Apple Support says subscribers can download shows on iPhone or iPad and on Mac or PC through the Apple TV app. Apple also provides Apple Vision Pro instructions. These are personal-device app downloads; they are not downloads to Apple TV hardware.

Apple explicitly says downloads are unavailable in the Apple TV app on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices and tv.apple.com. Those platforms can stream when supported, but they cannot be used as the offline-storage device. If your plan is to watch on a television during an internet outage, download to a supported personal device first and confirm that the app can play it there.
Apple’s timing rules vary. Most Apple TV channel downloads remain available for up to 30 days, although some expire earlier. For some Apple TV subscription titles, playback access ends 48 hours after you start watching or 30 days after download, whichever comes first. Apple also notes that limits on simultaneous downloaded titles or devices may apply.
Disney+: plan eligibility and quality choices
Disney+ Help states that supported mobile devices can download content for offline viewing and that plan eligibility applies. The service also provides download-quality choices, allowing you to trade storage use against picture quality.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Because Disney+ plan names, device support and download availability can vary by country, check the current regional help page before subscribing or traveling. Confirm that your exact plan includes downloads and that the mobile device appears in the current supported list. Do not infer eligibility from a plan offered in another market.
How to confirm that your exact episode is downloadable
Use this check for every service, especially when a trip depends on one particular series. Rights can differ by season, episode and country.
- Set the correct market. Sign in while connected to the country where you will use the service, because catalogs and rights are regional.
- Update the app. Install the current version from your device’s official app store. An old app can hide download controls or fail an eligibility check.
- Open the show’s episode list. Do not rely on a search-result badge or a third-party catalog listing. Select the season and the individual episode.
- Look for the download control. A visible download icon or “Download” command is the practical confirmation. If it is absent, assume that episode is not available offline on that account and device.
- Test playback in offline mode. After the download finishes, enable airplane mode or disconnect Wi-Fi and cellular data. Start the episode before leaving home so you know the license, subtitles and audio tracks work.
- Check every season you need. Rights can differ within one series. Downloading season one does not establish that later seasons are available.
Check your device before subscribing or traveling
“Works on my TV” and “can download” are different questions. A television, streaming stick or game console may support streaming while the service restricts downloads to personal mobile or computer apps.

- Movie dvd
- Operating system: record the exact OS version. For Netflix on an Amazon Fire tablet, the documented minimum is Fire OS 7.
- App edition: use the official mobile or desktop app named by the service. A browser tab is not automatically a download-capable client.
- Storage: leave room for the episodes, subtitles and temporary files. Higher quality consumes more space; remove completed downloads before a trip if storage is tight.
- Account access: confirm you can sign in and that the device is permitted under your plan. Simultaneous-download or device limits can block a new download even when the title itself is eligible.
- Power and connectivity: download on a stable Wi-Fi connection while charging. A partial file is not a reliable travel copy.
Plan, country and catalog checks
Offline viewing is often a plan feature rather than a universal account feature. Disney+ specifically says plan eligibility applies. Other services may impose device, title or simultaneous-download limits. Read the plan’s current feature list for the country where the account is billed.
Country changes can alter both the catalog and the rights attached to a download. A title saved at home may not be available when you sign in abroad, and a series offered in one market may be absent in another. Download before departure, then test playback with connectivity disabled. Avoid changing account regions solely to obtain a title; doing so can affect billing, catalog access and terms of service.

Expiry rules and why downloads are not ownership
Offline files are licensed access. A service can require you to reconnect after a period, remove a title when rights end or invalidate a download after playback begins. Apple documents several examples: most channel downloads last up to 30 days, some expire sooner, and certain subscription titles expire 48 hours after playback starts or 30 days after download, whichever comes first.
Best Value
Apple’s media-services terms also say downloaded content may be limited or expire and that some content may not be downloadable. Purchased content is generally available for download or redownload, but Apple warns that a purchase can become unavailable if it loses distribution rights. “Buy” therefore means an authorized digital transaction, not a guarantee of permanent access under every future licensing change.
For a long-term collection, consider authorized physical media or another purchase option whose terms you have read. Physical-media availability and pricing vary, so verify them locally rather than assuming every series has a disc release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step download workflow
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and charge the device. Large episodes can consume substantial data and battery.
- Open the service’s official app. Sign in to the account and profile that will watch the episodes.
- Choose the title and episode. Confirm the season, language and edition; specials may be listed separately.
- Tap Download. If the control is missing, stop and investigate rights, plan and device support instead of assuming the app is broken.
- Choose quality when offered. Standard or lower quality saves storage; higher quality uses more space and takes longer.
- Wait for completion. Check the app’s Downloads area for a completed status, not merely a queued item.
- Set up captions and audio. Downloaded language tracks may differ from streaming options. Select accessibility settings before disconnecting.
- Perform an offline test. Turn on airplane mode, launch the app and play several minutes. Reconnect afterward if the service requires periodic account verification.
- Note the expiry. Record any countdown or playback window so you watch before the license ends.
Troubleshooting branches
The download icon is missing
- Check another episode in the same season; rights may differ by episode.
- Verify the plan includes downloads and that you are using the correct account profile.
- Confirm the country, app version and device model.
- For Netflix, remember that streaming availability does not prove download availability.
The app says the device is unsupported
- Install the latest operating-system update allowed by the device.
- Use the service’s supported app rather than a browser or television client.
- For Fire tablets using Netflix, verify Fire OS 7 or later.
- For Apple TV, move the download to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or Apple Vision Pro; Apple TV hardware, smart TVs and tv.apple.com cannot store Apple TV downloads.
The download stops or will not play offline
- Free storage and retry on stable Wi-Fi.
- Keep the app installed and remain signed in; deleting app data can remove downloads.
- Reconnect briefly if the service requires license validation or the download has expired.
- Check whether playback started a shorter expiry window, such as Apple’s 48-hour rule for some subscription titles.
You need the file outside the app
Subscription downloads are not unrestricted video files. Do not use unofficial downloaders or directories that bypass access controls. If you need durable, transferable access, investigate an authorized purchase or physical release whose terms explicitly meet that need.

| Disney content on a mobile device | Disney+, provided the plan is download-eligible. | Regional plan terms, supported mobile device and quality setting. |
| Permanent or transferable access | An authorized purchase or physical release rather than a subscription download. | Redownload rights, distribution-rights clauses and whether the format can be played on your intended equipment. |
A practical travel checklist
- Confirm the exact episodes and download them while still at home.
- Update the operating system and streaming app before leaving.
- Check storage, battery capacity and charging cables.
- Test playback with airplane mode enabled.
- Write down expiry or playback deadlines.
- Pack a second supported device only if your plan permits simultaneous downloads.
- Keep account credentials available; reinstalling an app can remove offline files.
- Do not assume a smart-TV or streaming-stick app can download merely because it can stream.
Bottom line
Choose by title, device, plan, country and expiry—not by a universal ranking. Netflix offers the clearest documented breadth for mobile and Chromebook downloads, Apple TV is compelling for Apple-device users who understand its hardware restrictions and time windows, and Disney+ is suitable when your regional plan includes mobile downloads. Verify the episode in the app and complete an offline test before you depend on it.
