When a Square Enix RPG disappears from a digital store, the legal path is still clear: look first for an official remaster or collection, then consider a legitimate used disc or cartridge with compatible original hardware. Do not treat an unauthorized ROM, pirate cartridge, game copier, mod chip or other circumvention device as a harmless substitute simply because the game is no longer sold.
The best choice depends on what you want to preserve. A remaster usually offers the easiest modern setup and accessibility improvements; an original physical release is closer to the original build but requires older hardware and may cost more; a collection can restore a story while presenting some entries only as video compilations.
Start with the lawful order of operations
Use this sequence for any delisted Square Enix role-playing game:
- Check Square Enix’s current game pages. Look for a remaster, remake or collection and confirm the platforms listed for your country.
- Check the official storefront on your hardware. A title can be absent from one store, region or console while remaining available elsewhere.
- If no authorized re-release exists, find an authentic original disc or cartridge. Use hardware that officially supports that release and verify its region and condition.
- Avoid unauthorized downloads and circumvention products. A game’s delisted status does not itself make an unofficial copy an authorized one.
This approach separates three different goals: playing the exact original, accessing the same story on current hardware, and preserving a legally owned copy. They often lead to different purchases.

Official remasters that replace the need for emulation
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is Square Enix’s HD remaster of Chrono Cross. The publisher lists it for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. It is the strongest documented modern option for someone who wants the game’s setting and campaign without relying on legacy hardware.
The release converts its 3D models to HD, refines illustrations, provides higher-quality music and adds several convenience options. Players can turn enemy encounters on or off, use battle enhancements and enable auto-battle. Those changes make a current-platform playthrough easier, but they also mean this is a revised presentation rather than an untouched copy of the original release.
The edition also includes Radical Dreamers – Le Trésor Interdit – for the first time in this package. Square Enix announced that inclusion on April 7, 2022, alongside the same four platform choices. The publisher describes the game as featuring over 40 party members, so the remaster is particularly useful for players who want to explore its broad recruitment system without assembling an older console setup.

The Last Remnant Remastered is Square Enix’s remastered return of the 2008 role-playing game. Its official page lists PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The remaster uses a new engine for improved visuals, giving owners of those systems an authorized way to play the title without finding the original release.
It is not the same software build as the 2008 version. If your priority is the original balance, interface or presentation, compare the remaster with a legitimate physical copy where one exists. If your priority is straightforward access on a supported modern console, the remaster avoids the compatibility and maintenance issues of older hardware.
Kingdom Hearts collections: check whether an entry is playable
Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts Collection listings cover HD 1.5+2.5, HD 2.8 and Kingdom Hearts III collections across Steam, Epic, Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox storefronts. The catalog also lists Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.

Do not assume that every item in a collection is a playable remaster. Some entries are represented as HD cutscene compilations. A compilation can make the story accessible, but it does not give you an interactive version of that game. Before buying, open the edition’s contents list and identify whether each desired title is labeled as playable, a cinematic compilation or another type of package.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade as a legal modern route
Square Enix’s official buy listing includes Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam and Epic. It is a modern reimagining, not a re-release of the original 1997 game.
Choose it when you want the story world, characters and a contemporary production rather than exact preservation of the 1997 mechanics and presentation. It should not be described as an archival substitute for the original. Readers seeking the original soundtrack mix, graphics, turn-based structure or 1997-era pacing need to look for an authorized original release instead.
What each legal route preserves
The following comparison helps you choose before spending money. “Current platform” means a platform listed by Square Enix for the relevant edition; store availability can still vary by country and can change over time.

How to verify an official re-release before buying
1. Identify the exact game and release
Write down the original title, region, platform and any expansion or subtitle. “Kingdom Hearts” or “Final Fantasy VII” can refer to several products with different contents. This prevents you from buying a collection that tells the story but does not include the playable entry you expected.

2. Use the publisher’s product page
Confirm the edition name, included games, platform list and whether the page calls it a remaster, remake or collection. A remaster generally updates the original game; a remake or reimagining may change systems and structure; a collection may combine playable software with video-only material.
3. Confirm the platform’s store listing
Open the store for the console or computer you actually own. Check the edition, region, language information, required storage and whether the product is sold as a complete package or as an upgrade. Availability is not universal: a listing in one country does not guarantee a purchase option in another.
4. Read the contents and feature notes
Look for explicit statements about added music, graphics, encounter controls, auto-battle, included side stories and other changes. These notes tell you whether the product meets a convenience goal or an archival goal.
5. Preserve your proof of purchase
Keep the store receipt, account information and edition name. For a physical copy, retain the case, cartridge or disc and any regional packaging. Those records help distinguish a legitimate product from an unofficial reproduction if a listing or cartridge looks suspicious later.
Buying a legitimate original disc or cartridge
When no authorized reissue exists, a genuine original release can be the closest legal match to a delisted game. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Survey of the Video Game Reissue notes that physical releases can remain playable after a digital delisting. The survey’s 2025 publication summarizes a Delisted Games catalog snapshot from April 2023: “roughly 1,800 games” had been removed from digital storefronts, and “nearly 700” were permanently unavailable. Those figures describe that 2023 snapshot, not a current total.
Check the region
Confirm that the disc or cartridge matches your console’s region rules. Some systems accept imported software; others restrict software, downloadable content or account access by region. A seller’s photograph is not enough if the listing does not identify the release code or region.

Inspect condition and authenticity
- For discs, ask about scratches, disc rot, labels and whether the case contains the original disc rather than a burned copy.
- For cartridges, inspect the shell, label, contacts and board where the seller provides clear photographs. Unusually low prices, generic labels and claims of “thousands of games” are warning signs for pirate cartridges or game copiers.
- Check that manuals, inserts and original cases are present only if collecting matters to you; missing packaging does not by itself make software illegal, while a counterfeit cartridge remains unauthorized.
Verify hardware compatibility
Identify the console model that can run the release. Some systems require an original console, an officially supported backward-compatibility feature or a specific accessory. Do not assume that a disc from one generation runs on every later machine with a similar drive.

Plan for patches and online services
A physical copy preserves its original software, but a game may have required patches, downloadable content or online authentication. Check whether the console can still download any necessary update and whether the game’s online functions remain operated. A disc that starts offline may not reproduce every feature that existed while the publisher’s servers were active.
Why unauthorized ROM downloads are not a safe fallback
“Delisted” means a publisher or platform no longer offers a title through a particular digital storefront. It does not automatically grant permission to copy, download or distribute the game. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules differ by country, so the exact legal analysis depends on your jurisdiction, the source of the file and what you do with it.
Nintendo’s official Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states: “The only way to download legitimate games for Nintendo consoles is through Nintendo eShop or via the Nintendo website.” The same FAQ explains that unauthorized ROM use and unauthorized emulators can involve copies made without permission and circumvention of security measures. That guidance is specific to Nintendo’s games and systems, but it illustrates why a file’s availability online is not evidence that it is licensed.
Do not recommend or buy pirate cartridges, game copiers, mod chips, unauthorized emulators or devices marketed to bypass console security. They can contain altered software, fail to preserve the original game and expose your console or account to avoidable risks. Owning an original copy also does not automatically make every download source lawful; local exceptions and format-shifting rules vary, and many jurisdictions do not provide a general exemption for downloading someone else’s ROM.
Decision guide: choose the route that matches your goal
You want the easiest way to play on current hardware
Choose an official remaster or re-release listed for your console or computer. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition and The Last Remnant Remastered are the clearest examples in this group. Confirm the platform and region before purchase.

You want the original mechanics and presentation
Look for a legitimate disc or cartridge and the hardware that supports it. Accept that the original build may lack modern convenience features, later patches or functioning online services.
You mainly want the Kingdom Hearts story
Compare the collection’s contents and identify which entries are interactive and which are HD cutscene compilations. A collection may satisfy a narrative goal without replacing every playable original.
You want the setting and characters rather than exact preservation
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is appropriate for that purpose because it is a modern reimagining. Do not buy it expecting the 1997 game’s systems or presentation.
You are preserving a library for the long term
Keep authentic physical media, compatible hardware and any permitted patches together. Record the region and edition, store discs and cartridges away from heat and moisture, and do not modify the copy with an unauthorized device.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing a remake with the original: Read the product description for terms such as “reimagining,” then decide whether changed mechanics are acceptable.
- Assuming every collection entry is playable: Check for “HD cutscene compilation” or equivalent wording before purchase.
- Ignoring region restrictions: Match the game, downloadable content and console region where required.
- Buying a counterfeit physical copy: Request clear photographs and a verifiable release identity; avoid generic multi-game cartridges.
- Expecting permanent online access: Treat online functions and required servers as separate from ownership of the disc or cartridge.
- Using an unofficial ROM because the game is unavailable: Unavailability does not change the authorization status of the file or circumvention device.
- Assuming a current listing is worldwide: Stores, editions and platform support vary by country and can change without notice.

- Record the exact title, original platform and region.
- Search Square Enix’s current catalog for a remaster, remake or collection.
- Read the included-content list and distinguish playable software from video compilations.
- Check the official store on your own hardware and account region.
- If no re-release exists, identify a genuine disc or cartridge and compatible hardware.
- Verify condition, region, patches, downloadable content and online-service requirements.
- Reject unauthorized ROM sites, pirate cartridges, game copiers, mod chips and circumvention products.
- Keep purchase records and preserve physical media appropriately.

For most players, an official remaster or collection is the cleanest legal alternative to emulation.
