The best Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated-server settings depend on the custom game you are running. Use mp_gamemode to select the active mode and make sure that value is included in sv_gametypes. For Campaign, set difficulty with the word values Easy, Normal, Hard or Impossible. Versus and other non-Campaign difficulties are not reliably controlled by a normal console command, and Campaign servers with more than four human players require a SourceMod and MetaMod plugin setup rather than a simple cvar change.

Console-variable names and behavior can change with game patches. The commands below should therefore be checked with the live Valve command list or your server’s cvarlist before you put them into production.

Start with the mode you actually want to host

Left 4 Dead 2 separates the active game mode from the list of modes that the server permits. In practical terms, mp_gamemode is the mode selector, while sv_gametypes is the allowed-modes list. A custom server is most predictable when the selected mode appears in the allowed list.

For example, a Versus server may be launched with a setting equivalent to mp_gamemode versus, while a Survival server would use survival. The exact way that value is applied is one of the areas where community documentation conflicts: some administrators put mp_gamemode in server.cfg, some put it on the launch line, and others apply it through SourceMod with sm_cvar. Treat those as deployment alternatives to test on your installation, not as interchangeable, universally verified syntax.

  • Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies
  • The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog
Setting Purpose What to check
mp_gamemode Selects the active mode. Confirm the accepted value and whether your build applies it from the launch line, server configuration, or a plugin.
sv_gametypes Lists modes the server allows. Include the mode selected by mp_gamemode; a mismatch can cause mode votes, startup failures or an unexpected mode.
z_difficulty Campaign difficulty. Use a word value and verify it in-game because syntax has not been consistently documented across sources.

Recommended mode profiles

  • Co-op Campaign: select coop and set the desired Campaign difficulty.
  • Versus: select versus; do not assume a Campaign difficulty command will change the survivor or infected balance.
  • Survival: select survival and test map rotation and restart behavior after every change.
  • Scavenge: select scavenge and verify that the mode is also present in the allowed list.
  • Mutation or another custom ruleset: use the mode value required by that ruleset and confirm it with cvarlist before editing a public server.

Build a safe configuration workflow

Make one change at a time and keep a known-good copy of your files. This matters because L4D2 cvars are patch-dependent and because an invalid or ignored setting can look like a gameplay problem.

  1. Record the current state. At the server console, run cvarlist and save the output. Record the launch command, the active map, the current mode and the value of sv_gametypes.
  2. Choose the deployment point. Put ordinary persistent values in server.cfg only after confirming that your server build registers them there. Put values documented by your host as launch arguments on the launch line instead. If a plugin is required, load it after SourceMod and MetaMod are working.
  3. Set the allowed modes first. Ensure sv_gametypes contains the mode you intend to run. A mode selector that is not in the allowed list is a common reason for “gametype not working” reports.
  4. Set the active mode. Apply mp_gamemode using the method supported by your server. Restart the server or change the map if the setting is read only at startup.
  5. Verify the effective values. Query the cvars after startup rather than assuming the file was parsed. Test a fresh connection and a new map; a value retained in memory can hide a startup-order problem.
  6. Change difficulty separately. For Campaign, set z_difficulty and confirm the displayed difficulty in a new round. Do not use a Campaign assumption to evaluate Versus, Survival or other non-Campaign modes.
  7. Test voting and reconnects. Join with a second client, start a vote if votes are enabled, change maps and reconnect. This reveals whether the mode is merely the initial value or is actually enforced.

Campaign difficulty: use word values and verify the result

Community configuration guides generally describe z_difficulty with the words Easy, Normal, Hard and Impossible. One guide identifies Normal as the default. A practical Campaign entry therefore looks like z_difficulty Hard, but verify the accepted capitalization and command behavior with your current game build before relying on it.

Value Use case Verification
Easy Casual groups or testing a new custom map. Start a new Campaign round and confirm the server reports Easy.
Normal Default-style co-op balance. Check the effective cvar after a restart; do not infer it from the previous map.
Hard Experienced co-op groups. Reconnect and start a new round to make sure the value was not only applied to the prior session.
Impossible Expert-level Campaign play. Confirm the exact spelling accepted by the running server.

Do not silently substitute mp_difficulty 0 through mp_difficulty 3. One hosting document describes that numeric format, but it was not independently confirmed against the game or the Valve command list. If your panel exposes a numeric difficulty field, treat it as a panel-specific control until an in-game query proves the resulting value.

Why non-Campaign difficulty is different

Difficulty settings are not uniform across L4D2 modes. The available evidence supports using z_difficulty for Campaign, but does not establish a reliable console-variable method for Versus or other non-Campaign modes. In those modes, balance is determined by the rules of the mode, map and any installed plugins.

If a Versus server ignores a difficulty command, do not keep adding conflicting cvars. First confirm that the server is actually running Versus, then remove the unverified difficulty override and test the mode’s native behavior. For custom rules, use a maintained SourceMod plugin that explicitly documents the supported game modes and cvars.

Locking a mode without breaking votes

Mode locking is frequently requested for private tournaments and custom lobbies, but the available instructions disagree about the exact mechanism. One community report says that placing mp_gamemode in the server configuration prevents players from voting into another mode. A hosting guide instead says to provide +mp_gamemode versus on the launch line, while other administrators use sm_cvar mp_gamemode through SourceMod.

  1. Start with only the mode value and the matching sv_gametypes entry.
  2. Connect as a client and attempt an available mode vote.
  3. Change the map and restart the server to see whether the mode persists.
  4. If players can still switch modes, use a plugin designed to block or restrict votes instead of stacking multiple copies of mp_gamemode.
  5. Check the server console for an “unknown command,” “unknown cvar” or rejected-value message after every change.

Do not describe a mode as permanently locked until it survives a map change, a full restart and a client vote attempt.

Hosting more than four human players in Campaign

The standard Campaign rules do not provide a simple cvar that turns a four-player lobby into a larger human roster. Community setup guidance indicates that extra human slots require a SourceMod and MetaMod installation plus plugins designed for expanded survivor slots or player management.

What the expanded-player setup involves

  • MetaMod: the loader required by SourceMod on the server.
  • SourceMod: the plugin framework used to apply player and gameplay extensions.
  • An appropriate plugin: the component that creates extra slots or manages additional survivors; its compatibility and commands vary.
  • Map and gameplay testing: custom maps, director logic, rescue events and finales may not scale cleanly with additional humans.

Install the frameworks before the gameplay plugin, confirm that both load without errors, and then test with more than four clients on a private server. A plugin that adds slots is not automatically a difficulty or balance system. Expect changes to item distribution, bot replacement, spawn logic, scoring and map scripting, and keep a rollback copy of the original configuration.

Self-hosted server versus a managed game-server panel

Both deployment models can run custom games, but they expose different failure points. Self-hosting gives you direct access to launch arguments, configuration files, logs and plugin versions. A managed host provides a control panel and usually handles the operating system, process supervision and backups, but it may translate or restrict launch options.

Decision point Self-hosted Managed panel
Mode selection Choose whether to use the launch line, server.cfg or SourceMod after testing registration. Use the panel’s mode field or custom launch-argument box; confirm what the panel writes at startup.
Mode lock Can be tested directly with cvars, logs and plugins. May be affected by panel presets that overwrite server.cfg on restart.
Campaign difficulty Set and query z_difficulty directly. Check whether a “difficulty” control writes a word value, a numeric value or a plugin setting.
More than four Campaign players Install and maintain MetaMod, SourceMod and the required plugin yourself. Ask whether those frameworks and the specific plugin are supported before renting the server.
Diagnostics Full access to console output and files. Depends on the panel’s log access and restart behavior.

For either model, keep the launch command, configuration files and plugin list in version control or dated backups. A panel can make a setting appear saved while a generated configuration overwrites it on the next restart.

Common problems and precise fixes

The server starts in the wrong mode

  • Query mp_gamemode and sv_gametypes after startup.
  • Check that the selected value is spelled exactly as the running build expects.
  • Add that value to the allowed list.
  • Determine whether your host reads the value from the launch line rather than server.cfg.
  • Restart and test a new map; an existing session may retain its original rules.

Players can vote into another mode

Do not assume that a startup value equals an enforced lock. Test a vote and inspect plugin logs. If the community method you chose does not block the vote, use a purpose-built vote-control plugin and verify that it supports your game mode and current SourceMod version.

The difficulty command does nothing

Confirm that you are in Campaign before evaluating z_difficulty. Use one of the documented word values, query the effective cvar, then start a new round. In Versus or another non-Campaign mode, an ignored difficulty command may be normal rather than a syntax error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A command is unknown or ignored

Run cvarlist and check the server console for the command’s registration. Some commands require developer mode enabled with the -dev launch option. Developer mode should be used only when the command’s documentation says it is required; it is not a general fix for an invalid cvar.

Extra-player plugins cause crashes or broken finales

  • Disable the newest plugin and reproduce the issue with four players.
  • Confirm that MetaMod, SourceMod and the plugin all support the current game build.
  • Test on a stock Campaign before testing custom maps.
  • Check plugin logs for failed signatures, missing dependencies or unsupported map logic.
  • Restore the last known-good plugin and configuration set before inviting a public group.

A practical test matrix for custom games

Before publishing the server address, run the same short acceptance test for every profile you plan to offer.

  1. Start the server from a clean restart.
  2. Record the effective mp_gamemode, sv_gametypes and, for Campaign, z_difficulty.
  3. Join with one client, then with the intended maximum number of human players.
  4. Change to a second map in the same mode.
  5. Reconnect a client and confirm that the rules are unchanged.
  6. Attempt a mode vote if votes are enabled.
  7. For expanded Campaigns, test a rescue event, a finale and a player disconnect.
  8. Save the console and plugin logs with the configuration revision that produced them.

This catches the most expensive class of mistakes: settings that look correct in a file but are not active after startup, map changes or plugin load order.

What to verify before relying on a command

The Valve wiki has a Left 4 Dead 2 console-command index, but only its opening section was available in the material used for this guide, and individual entries for sv_gametypes, mp_gamemode and z_difficulty were not independently verified there. Use the live wiki or your own server’s cvarlist to confirm the command name, accepted values, flags and whether it is read at startup.

This caution is important because community guides and host documentation disagree about launch-line syntax, numeric versus word difficulty values and consistency settings such as sv_consistency. No single value for sv_consistency was established, so do not copy a number from an unrelated guide without testing the custom content you intend to run.

Recommended baseline profiles

Profile Core choices Extra requirements
Private Campaign mp_gamemode coop; a verified z_difficulty word value; matching sv_gametypes. None beyond the dedicated server, unless custom plugins are used.
Private Versus mp_gamemode versus; matching sv_gametypes; no assumed Campaign difficulty override. Optional vote-control or administration plugin if the mode must remain fixed.
Large Campaign Campaign settings above, plus a tested player-expansion configuration. MetaMod, SourceMod and a compatible extra-player plugin.
Managed custom server Use the host’s documented launch and configuration fields, then query the effective cvars. Confirm panel support for plugins, custom maps, logs and restart persistence.

The most reliable configuration is the smallest one that passes the restart, map-change, reconnect and vote tests. Add plugins only when a requirement—such as additional Campaign humans or vote control—cannot be met by the base server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I force a Left 4 Dead 2 server to stay in one game mode?

You can attempt to enforce a mode with mp_gamemode and a matching sv_gametypes entry, but community documentation disagrees about whether the value belongs in server.cfg, the launch line or SourceMod. Verify the lock through a restart, map change and vote test; use a maintained vote-control plugin if necessary.

What is the correct Campaign difficulty command?

Community guides use z_difficulty with Easy, Normal, Hard or Impossible. Confirm the accepted syntax and effective value with cvarlist on your current server build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does mp_difficulty 0-3 work in L4D2?

A host document describes numeric values, but that format was not independently confirmed. Treat it as panel-specific until an in-game query demonstrates the resulting difficulty.

How do I get more than four human players in Campaign?

Install MetaMod and SourceMod, then add a compatible plugin that expands or manages survivor slots. This is a plugin-based setup, not a single standard cvar, and it must be tested on the maps you plan to host.

Why is a console command reported as unknown?

Check the command with cvarlist, confirm that you are using the server console rather than a client console, and review whether the command requires developer mode through the -dev launch option. Do not assume developer mode fixes an unregistered or misspelled command.
