For most players, the best replay workflow is to use the League client for watching and quick Highlights, League Director for cinematic camera work, and OBS Studio for recording a complete session. Set the game to Very High when image quality matters, record Highlights at the client’s highest available quality, and configure separate OBS sources for the lobby and the live game. Save finished clips outside the replay system because Riot says replays last only for the length of a patch cycle.
Choose the right replay method first
League of Legends offers three practical ways to turn a match replay into video. They are not interchangeable: each is optimized for a different job.

A replay file is a .rofl file launched through the League client. It is not a permanent video file: Riot Games Support states that “Replays last for the length of a patch cycle.” If a match is important, export the moments you need before the client moves to a new patch.

- Open the League client and go to Profile, then Match History.
- Find the match and choose the download control. Depending on the client state, you may see Download Replay or a similar post-game download button.
- After the download completes, select Watch Replay to launch the
.roflfile in the client. - Start playback, pause at the moment you want to inspect, and use the timeline to jump between events.
Download controls can disappear when a replay is no longer available for the current patch. That is expected behavior, not evidence that the original match data has been deleted incorrectly. Export any important clip while the replay still opens, then keep the resulting video or image files in a normal folder outside the League replay system.

Best controls for watching and analyzing a replay
Jump directly to important events
Use the replay timeline to move between kills, objectives and other marked events instead of playing the entire match at normal speed. This is the fastest way to review a team fight, examine a rotation or find the exact moment a mistake began.
Follow a specific player
Select a champion portrait to follow that champion. You can also use the champion hotkeys to switch the followed player without returning to the timeline. This is useful for coaching because you can compare the player’s camera position, pathing and decisions with what was happening elsewhere on the map.
Lock and pan the camera
Double-select a champion to lock the camera to that champion. For a smoother overview, drag with the middle mouse button to pan rather than making a series of abrupt fixed-camera jumps. Use a locked view when studying one player’s mechanics and a free or wider view when analyzing spacing, objective setups or rotations.
Preserve the evidence before a patch change
Replay playback depends on the client’s patch cycle. A replay that works today may not launch after the client advances to a new patch. Treat the replay as the editable source and the exported WebM, PNG or OBS file as the durable copy.

Fastest way to record a clip: client Highlights
The built-in Highlights recorder is the simplest option when you only need a short segment from a replay. Riot documents WebM output, a 720p default and video-quality controls available in the replay before recording.
Set the save locations
- Open the League client settings.
- Go to the Replays section.
- Set the folder used for replay files and the folder used for Highlights. Choose locations with enough free space and a name you will recognize later.
- Apply the settings before starting your review session.
The exact folder matters when you are collecting many clips: the client’s Highlights section is convenient for review, but a dedicated folder makes it easier to back up finished work and organize clips by match or date.
Record while the replay is playing
- Launch the replay and position the timeline and camera just before the moment you want.
- Press Ctrl+V to start a Highlight.
- Let the play run through the section you need.
- Press Ctrl+V again to stop recording.
- Open the client’s Highlights section to review, rename, delete or share the clip.
Choose quality before recording
Open the replay’s video-quality controls before you begin a Highlight. The documented default is 720p; select a higher available quality when the client offers it and your computer can maintain smooth playback. A higher setting produces a larger file and can increase rendering or storage demands, so use the highest option that remains free of stutter.
Highlights are ideal for an immediate shareable moment. They are less suitable when you need a long uninterrupted recording, frame-accurate editing, multiple audio tracks or a sequence assembled from several camera angles.

Best League Director settings for cinematic replays
League Director is the most capable documented route for planned replay cinematics and coached demonstrations. It adds controls that the standard replay viewer does not provide: a free camera, attachment to a champion or minion, HUD and notification visibility controls, keyframed sequences and export to WebM or PNG.
Start with a clean, high-quality render
- Launch League Director on Windows and open the replay you want to stage.
- Set Video Graphics to Very High before creating the final shot.
- Restart the replay after changing the graphics setting. The restart is important for features such as the skybox and related rendering changes to update.
- Play to the section you want, then pause while you position the camera and prepare the sequence.
Changing the graphics option without restarting can leave a replay using the previous rendering state. If the skybox or another visual feature does not change, restart the replay rather than assuming the setting was ignored.
Build the camera shot
- Use the free camera for an establishing shot, overhead map view or a controlled orbit around the action.
- Attach the camera to a champion when the viewer must stay with that player through movement or combat.
- Attach to a minion when the scene benefits from a low, moving perspective along a lane.
- Hide the HUD, health bars and notifications when they distract from a clean cinematic frame.
Animate with the sequencer
Use League Director’s sequencer to place keyframes for camera position and movement. A keyframed sequence is preferable to trying to drag the camera manually while the action plays: it produces repeatable motion and lets you concentrate on timing the play rather than correcting hand movement.

Keep the exported files outside the replay folder. The replay can expire at the next patch even though the Director export remains usable.

OBS Studio settings for League of Legends
OBS requires two capture contexts because the League client lobby and the running game are separate Windows processes. OBS Project’s documentation states: “League of Legends requires separate Window Capture and Game Capture sources for the lobby and game.”
Create a lobby scene
- In OBS, create a scene named Lobby.
- Add a Window Capture source.
- Choose the League client window running under
LeagueClientUx.exe. - Confirm that the preview shows the client lobby, match history or replay controls.
Create a game scene
- Create a second scene named Game.
- Add a Game Capture source.
- Select the running game executable,
League of Legends.exe. - Start an active game or training session and verify that the preview displays the game image.
OBS notes that Game Capture first needs an active session. Testing it while only the client lobby is open can make a correctly configured source appear broken.
Switch scenes automatically
Open OBS’s Automatic Scene Switcher. Set OBS to use the Lobby scene when the game window is absent and the Game scene when the lobby window is absent. This prevents the recording from freezing on the client while the match is running and avoids showing the wrong process when you return to the lobby.

Use OBS for replays
For a replay, launch the replay first, then test the Game scene while the replay is actively rendering. OBS records what the selected capture source exposes, so the camera view, HUD state and overlays you see in the replay are the elements that appear in the recording. If you need cinematic camera motion, stage it in League Director first; if you need a straightforward full-session recording, OBS is usually faster than exporting many short Highlights.

Fix black screens, wrong windows and missing footage
OBS shows a black preview
- Confirm that the source type matches the process: Window Capture for
LeagueClientUx.exe, Game Capture forLeague of Legends.exe. - Start an active game or training session before testing Game Capture.
- Check that the selected executable is the one currently running, not a stale or similarly named window.
- Bring the intended window to the foreground and verify that OBS is not capturing a different window with the same title.
OBS captures the lobby during the match
The scene is probably still using Window Capture or the automatic switcher is not matching the process state. Open the Game scene manually, confirm its Game Capture source targets League of Legends.exe, then review Automatic Scene Switcher rules so the Game scene is selected when the game window is present.
The recording shows the wrong window
Reopen the source properties and inspect the active window or executable selection. Window Capture follows the specific client process; it does not automatically become Game Capture when a match starts. If several League-related windows are open, select the exact process named in the source configuration.
Another overlay interferes with capture
Temporarily disable competing overlays and automatic recorders while diagnosing the problem. Overlay hooks can change which window OBS sees or prevent Game Capture from attaching. Once capture works, re-enable other tools one at a time so you can identify a conflict instead of changing several variables at once.

Check the patch date first. Riot’s patch-cycle limitation means an older .rofl may no longer be playable after the client advances. There is no OBS or graphics setting that can make an expired replay current again; use an exported Highlight, Director render or OBS recording saved before the update.
League Director visuals did not change after selecting Very High
Restart the replay after changing Video Graphics. Features such as the skybox may not update in an already running replay. Reopen the replay at Very High, then recreate or export the shot.
File management and quality practices
- Create separate folders for raw replays, client Highlights, League Director exports and OBS recordings.
- Rename clips with the match date, player, event and camera type immediately after reviewing them.
- Copy important WebM, PNG and OBS files to a location outside the League client before updating the game.
- Use the client’s Highlights section to delete failed takes and keep only the clips you intend to share.
- For a long coaching session, record with OBS once the scenes are verified instead of starting and stopping many individual Highlights.
- For a polished montage, use League Director for repeatable camera movement and export PNG when frame-level compositing is more important than a single video file.
Which workflow should you use?
Choose the client replay viewer when your priority is analysis: its timeline, champion selection and camera lock get you to the relevant play quickly. Choose client Highlights when you need a short clip with minimal setup. Choose League Director when the shot itself matters and you need a free camera, attachments, hidden interface elements or keyframes. Choose OBS when you want a continuous recording and are willing to maintain separate lobby and game capture scenes.
In every case, the durable workflow is the same: open the replay while it is valid, create the export you need, and store that export independently of the patch-dependent .rofl file.
