For wet autumn grass, choose traction and clipping control before maximum cutting width. A self-propelled petrol mower is usually the strongest option for a large, sloping or overgrown lawn. For a smaller lawn, a weather-resistant cordless mower is easier to handle, provided the grass is not long enough to overload it. A ride-on mower becomes sensible when wet slopes or a large area make walking behind a machine unsafe or inefficient.
Whenever possible, wait until the grass is dry to the touch. Honda’s maintenance guidance warns that wet grass is slippery, can make you lose your footing, and causes clippings to clog the deck and form clumps. If cutting cannot wait, raise the deck, take narrower passes, keep the blade at full speed and stop the machine completely before clearing any blockage.
Can you mow wet autumn grass?
You can, but postponing the job until the lawn is dry is safer and generally produces a better cut. Honda’s maintenance guidance states: “Always wait for wet grass to dry before mowing.” Its reason is practical rather than cosmetic: “Wet grass is slippery and can make you lose your footing.” Damp clippings also stick to the underside of the deck, restrict the discharge path and collect in heavy clumps instead of spreading evenly.

Autumn adds several complications. Grass may be longer after a period of rain, fallen leaves can hide uneven ground, and saturated soil is easier to rut with a heavy machine. A mower that feels stable on a dry, level lawn may slide or lose traction on a damp slope. The best machine therefore depends on the ground, the amount of growth and how you intend to handle the clippings.

When postponing is the right decision
- Do not mow when the surface is slippery enough that your footing is uncertain.
- Wait if the soil is soft enough for the wheels to leave deep tracks.
- Postpone if rain is continuing, visibility is poor or the lawn contains hidden objects beneath leaves.
- Delay the job if the deck is already clogged or the blade is not cutting cleanly; forcing the mower increases the chance of a blockage.
If the lawn cannot wait
Use the highest practical cutting setting, remove only a narrow swath on each pass and maintain full blade speed. Make several light passes rather than trying to take the entire height in one cut. Keep your route away from steep cross-slopes and areas where the wheels cannot maintain firm contact. If the discharge opening blocks, stop the machine and follow its owner’s manual before touching the deck; never reach under a running or coasting mower.
What makes a mower suitable for wet grass?
Wet-weather performance is not a single specification. It is the combination of traction, power, deck design, clipping options and the operator’s ability to control the machine.
Traction and propulsion
Self-propulsion matters more as the lawn becomes damp, sloping or uneven. You do not have to push the full weight of the mower uphill, and rear-wheel drive can help the machine maintain forward movement when the front wheels are passing over thick, wet growth. On very large or difficult sites, a ride-on format can keep the operator’s weight and controls more stable than a walk-behind machine.

Power reserve
Honda describes petrol mowers as heavier but more powerful and suited to tougher terrain. That reserve is useful when autumn grass is long, wet or dense, because the engine is less likely to bog down when the deck meets a heavy swath. Cordless machines avoid fuel handling and engine maintenance, but their stated coverage figures should be treated as manufacturer capabilities rather than guarantees in saturated, overgrown grass.
Deck width and height adjustment
A wider deck can shorten mowing time, but width alone is not decisive in wet conditions. A large deck can collect more wet material before the discharge path clears, while a narrower pass reduces the load on the blade and deck. Broad height adjustment lets you raise the first cut instead of scalping a wet lawn. The STIGA Combi 748 SE, for example, has a 46 cm cutting width and a 22–80 mm height range.
Clipping management
Collection and discharge are normally more practical than mulching when grass is damp. STIHL’s catalogue guidance is explicit: “Avoid mulching when it’s wet.” Wet clippings tend to stick together and can form a mat under the deck or on the lawn. A collector removes the material from the surface; side or rear discharge lets it leave the deck without filling a bag, although discharged clippings must not be directed toward people, paths or water.
Best mower types by lawn and weather conditions
| Lawn situation | Most suitable type | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, level lawn with occasional dampness | Cordless mower | Easy starting, no fuel handling and less cable management | Coverage and cutting speed fall in long, saturated grass |
| Large or overgrown lawn | Self-propelled petrol mower | More power for heavy growth and less pushing effort | Heavier machine can mark soft soil |
| Sloping, uneven or persistently wet ground | Self-propelled mower with strong traction, or a ride-on for a large area | Propulsion reduces pushing and improves control | Do not cross a slope if footing or wheel grip is uncertain |
| Wet clippings that repeatedly clog the deck | Mower with collection or discharge options | Material can leave the deck instead of being forced through a mulching system | Empty the collector before it becomes packed and heavy |

STIGA Combi 748 SE: strongest all-round choice for difficult autumn growth
The STIGA Combi 748 SE is the clearest fit when wet autumn grass is part of a large or demanding mowing routine. It is self-propelled, uses a 139 cc petrol engine and has electric start. Its 60 litre collector gives more capacity before emptying, while the 46 cm deck balances coverage with a manageable swath in heavy growth. The published height range is 22–80 mm, allowing a high first cut when the lawn is long or damp.
Why its clipping options matter
The mower supports collection, mulching, side discharge and rear discharge. In wet conditions, start with collection or a discharge mode rather than mulching. Collection is useful when you need a tidy finish, while discharge avoids carrying a collector full of wet, heavy material. Mulching is an option for suitable dry conditions, not the default for saturated grass.
How to set it up for a wet first pass
- Set the deck toward the upper end of its 22–80 mm range rather than attempting a low finish in one pass.
- Choose collection or a discharge mode; avoid mulching while the grass is wet.
- Engage the self-propel drive only after you have a stable stance and a clear route.
- Take a narrower swath through the longest sections and keep the blade at full speed.
- Stop the mower before inspecting or clearing any blockage.
Husqvarna W520i: cordless propulsion for damp or uneven lawns
The Husqvarna W520i combines cordless operation with rear-wheel drive and a wide aluminium deck. Rear-wheel drive is relevant on damp ground because it supports traction where a push mower would require more physical effort. Its listed clipping choices are collection, BioClip and rear discharge.
For wet grass, use collection or rear discharge and reserve BioClip for conditions in which the clippings are dry enough to break up and pass through the deck. The supplied product details do not state a cutting width or battery coverage figure, so do not infer those values from the deck description. Check the exact regional specification and battery package before buying.

- Choose the W520i when avoiding fuel storage, refuelling and engine starting is a priority.
- It is a better match for a lawn that is damp but not consistently long and saturated.
- Rear-wheel drive makes it more suitable than a basic push cordless mower when the lawn has mild slopes or uneven sections.
- For persistent heavy growth, compare the actual battery capacity, spare-battery cost and charging arrangements with the workload before committing.
Honda izy-ON: convenient cordless mowing for smaller lawns
Honda describes the izy-ON range as IP54 weatherproof. Honda also states that a 6.0 Ah battery can cut up to 450 square metres. “Up to” is a manufacturer capability, not a guaranteed area in long, wet autumn grass: dense growth, repeated high-load cuts and damp clippings can reduce coverage.
This range is most sensible for a small, relatively level lawn where the operator values quick setup and low routine handling. It reduces fuel and cable management, but it should not be selected solely on the 450 m² figure if the lawn is frequently saturated or allowed to become overgrown.
Questions to answer before buying
- Is the quoted 450 m² sufficient for your lawn with reserve for difficult conditions?
- Does the specific model include the battery and charger, or are they separate?
- What collection, discharge and height-adjustment features are included on the exact model available in your region?
- Can you mow without crossing a slope where wheel grip may be compromised?
Husqvarna R 112C: a specialist option for wet slopes and larger areas
The Husqvarna R 112C is a ride-on mower intended for situations where a walk-behind machine is no longer the most controlled or efficient format. Husqvarna specifically describes it as providing traction on slopes and in wet conditions. It offers BioClip or rear discharge.

- EXCEEDS THE POWER OF GAS: EGO's cordless electric mower delivers up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque for performance that exceeds gas-powered mowers.
- UP TO 60 MINUTES OF RUNTIME: The EGO electric lawn mower operates for up to 60 minutes on a single charge with the included 56V 7.5Ah battery.
- TOUCH DRIVE SELF-PROPELLED TECHNOLOGY: The EGO 800 Series lawn mower is a self propelled electric lawn mower. Use the pressure of your palm to engage the self-propel system, and control the variable speed with a dial positioned at your fingertips.
- SELECT CUT MULTI-BLADE CUTTING SYSTEM: Customize your cut with interchangeable lower blades; the battery powered mower includes mulching, high-lift bagging, and extended runtime lower blades, plus an upper blade.
- MOW AT YOUR PACE: The EGO self propelled lawn mower lets you adjust your speed between 0.9 and 3.1 miles per hour.
Use rear discharge when grass is wet and choose BioClip only when conditions meet the manufacturer’s guidance for that mode. A ride-on does not remove the need to assess soil firmness: a heavy machine can still damage soft ground, and no traction claim makes an unsafe slope safe. The supplied product details do not state the R 112C’s engine, deck width or collector capacity, so those should be verified in the current regional specification.

| Consideration | Cordless electric | Petrol |
|---|---|---|
| Routine handling | No fuel mixing or refuelling; battery must be charged | Requires fuel and engine-related checks |
| Heavy, wet growth | Suitable when the mower and battery have enough reserve; stated coverage is not a guarantee in saturated grass | Generally the stronger choice for large or overgrown autumn lawns, according to Honda’s guidance |
| Traction options | Available on models such as the rear-wheel-drive W520i | Self-propelled petrol models are widely suited to demanding terrain; the STIGA example is self-propelled |
| Noise and emissions at the point of use | No exhaust at the mower while operating | Combustion engine produces exhaust and needs fuel |
| Best match | Small to medium lawns where convenience and manageable growth are priorities | Large, sloping or overgrown lawns where power and sustained operation matter |
The practical answer is not that one power source always wins. Choose cordless for a manageable lawn when convenience and reduced routine handling are more important than maximum reserve. Choose petrol when the lawn is large, slopes are demanding or autumn growth routinely becomes heavy. Match the drive system to the terrain rather than choosing by engine or battery type alone.

1. Inspect the lawn first
Walk the route before starting. Remove branches, stones and hidden objects, and identify soft patches, steep sections and areas where leaves obscure the ground. Decide where clippings will go so that discharge cannot reach people, pets, paths or water.
2. Prepare the mower safely
Check that the blade is sharp, the deck is clear while the machine is switched off, the collector is fitted correctly if you are collecting, and the battery or fuel supply is adequate for the job. Wear footwear with reliable grip. For any service or obstruction work, use the isolation procedure specified in the owner’s manual.
3. Raise the cutting height
Use a higher setting for the first pass, especially if the grass is long. The STIGA Combi 748 SE offers 22–80 mm of adjustment; the correct setting for another mower depends on its own range. Removing less material reduces the load entering the deck.
4. Reduce the swath
Overlap passes slightly but do not force the full deck through the densest growth. A narrower effective swath gives wet clippings more opportunity to clear and reduces the chance of the engine or motor bogging down.
5. Keep the blade at full speed
Maintain the mower’s normal cutting speed rather than labouring at a low blade speed. If the machine begins to slow, stop advancing, let the blade recover and reassess the height or swath.
Rank #4
- WIDER MORE EVEN CUTTING: The 17-inch cutting deck and 6 height settings from 1 to 3 inches (25–75 mm) help this cordless lawn mower deliver a cleaner, more even finish across small and medium lawns.
- DUAL BATTERY EXTENDED RUNTIME: Powered by two 20V 4.0Ah batteries, this walk behind lawn mower runs for up to 40 minutes and covers up to 5,380 sq. ft. (500 m²) per charge under test conditions.
- LARGE CAPACITY GRASS COLLECTION: The 50L collection bag holds more clippings between emptying cycles, while regular cleaning around the inlet and blade area helps this lawn mower maintain reliable grass collection.
- HIGH OUTPUT BRUSHLESS POWER: The 3000 RPM brushless motor delivers up to 1200W max output, helping this electric battery powered lawn mower maintain steady blade speed through routine residential grass.
- SIMPLE START PORTABLE DESIGN: One-button activation and a pull-bar start make operation straightforward, while the 14 kg lightweight body makes this cordless lawn mower easier to carry, position, and store.
6. Choose collection or discharge
Use the collector when you need a tidy surface and can empty it before it becomes packed with wet material. Use side or rear discharge when carrying wet clippings would make the mower difficult to control. Avoid mulching in wet conditions.
7. Stop before clearing anything
When the deck blocks, stop the machine completely, isolate it according to the manual and wait for all moving parts to stop. Never clear a blockage with your hands. Use the procedure and tool specified by the manufacturer.
How to prevent and fix common wet-grass problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clippings form a heavy mat under the deck | Grass is too wet, the cut is too low or the swath is too wide | Stop safely, clean the deck, raise the height and reduce the swath; wait for drying if possible |
| Collector fills quickly and becomes heavy | Wet material has a higher tendency to clump | Empty it earlier and consider rear or side discharge for the wettest sections |
| Mower loses forward traction | Damp slope, soft soil or unsuitable drive arrangement | Stop, change route and avoid crossing the slope; use self-propulsion or a suitable ride-on where appropriate |
| Uneven, torn-looking cut | Dull blade, overloaded deck or grass standing in different directions | Inspect and sharpen or replace the blade according to the manual, then make a higher first pass |
| Cordless mower stops before the lawn is finished | Battery capacity has been reduced by heavy, wet growth or the area exceeds the stated capability | Recharge or use a spare compatible battery, reduce the load per pass and reassess whether petrol power is a better fit |
Cleaning and maintenance after wet mowing
Clean the deck while the residue is fresh
Wet clippings harden as they dry. After the mower is safely isolated, remove residue using the method allowed by the owner’s manual. Do not turn or tilt a machine in a way the manual prohibits, and do not put hands near the blade. A clean deck preserves the discharge path for the next cut.
Inspect the blade and fasteners
Look for damage, excessive wear and looseness after hitting hidden objects. A sharp, correctly secured blade cuts more cleanly and reduces the amount of material the mower must push through a wet deck. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for removal, sharpening and torque.
Dry and store the machine correctly
Allow the mower and collector to dry before storage. Keep batteries, chargers and electrical connections protected as specified for the model. The Honda izy-ON range is described as IP54 weatherproof, but weatherproofing does not mean that every component can be stored wet or exposed indefinitely; use the storage instructions for the exact machine.
A decision checklist before you buy
- Measure the lawn: A stated 450 m² maximum for a 6.0 Ah Honda battery is relevant only if your lawn and mowing conditions fit within that capability.
- Assess slopes: Damp slopes make traction and propulsion more important than headline deck width.
- Estimate growth: Regularly long or overgrown grass favours petrol power or a higher-capacity cordless setup.
- Choose a clipping plan: Confirm that the mower can collect or discharge, and do not assume mulching is suitable when wet.
- Check height range: Make sure the mower can be raised high enough for a safe first pass.
- Plan maintenance: Deck cleaning, blade inspection and safe blockage clearing are part of wet-weather ownership.
- Verify the regional package: Battery, charger, collector, cutting width and height controls can vary by exact model and market; confirm the current specification before purchase.
Bottom line: which mower should you choose?
For a large, sloping or overgrown lawn, start with a self-propelled petrol mower such as the STIGA Combi 748 SE. Its 139 cc engine, electric start, 60 litre collector, 46 cm deck, 22–80 mm height range and collection/discharge choices address the main problems of heavy autumn growth. For a smaller lawn, Honda’s weatherproof izy-ON range or a cordless model with suitable drive can reduce routine handling; treat the stated 450 m² per 6.0 Ah battery as an upper manufacturer figure, not a wet-grass promise. The Husqvarna W520i is the more traction-focused cordless example because it adds rear-wheel drive. Where wet slopes and a large area justify a ride-on, the Husqvarna R 112C is the specialist format.

Whatever the mower, the safest and cleanest result comes from waiting for the grass to dry. If you must cut while it is damp, raise the deck, narrow the pass, keep the blade at full speed, use collection or discharge instead of wet mulching, and stop the machine before clearing any clog.
