There is no defensible, universal lowest-cost-per-page laser printer in the available price evidence. The strongest current monochrome candidate is the Brother HL-L2460DW XL because its US listing showed a $229.99 printer with approximately 4,200 pages of toner in the box. That large bundle can reduce how often you buy supplies, but it does not prove the lowest lifetime cost until dated replacement-toner and drum prices are checked against competing models.
This guide shows how to make that comparison correctly, what the HL-L2460DW XL includes, how its yields are measured, and which figures you must verify locally before calling any printer the cheapest to run.
What cost per page actually measures
Cost per page (CPP) is the consumable expense required to produce one printed page. For a monochrome laser printer, the basic calculation is:
toner CPP = cartridge price ÷ rated cartridge yield

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A realistic ownership calculation adds the drum and, if you want a longer-term figure, the printer purchase price over the number of pages you expect to print:
lifetime CPP = (printer price + all toner purchases + drum purchases) ÷ total pages printed
Use the same currency, sales region, tax treatment, date, paper size, and genuine-versus-compatible supply assumption for every model. A cartridge with a low shelf price can still cost more per page if its yield is lower. Conversely, a printer with an expensive high-yield cartridge may be cheaper to operate if the yield is proportionally larger.
Manufacturer yields are standardized estimates rather than guarantees. Brother’s published cartridge yields for the relevant models follow ISO/IEC 19752 and apply to single-sided A4 or Letter pages. Actual output changes with the amount of toner coverage, graphics, job size, media, temperature, and print settings. A page covered edge to edge with dark graphics uses much more toner than a normal text letter, so your own CPP will differ from the box calculation.
The best-supported low-replenishment candidate
Brother HL-L2460DW XL
Brother’s US product listing showed the HL-L2460DW XL at $229.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026. The box contains one TN830 standard cartridge and one TN830XL high-yield cartridge, with approximately 4,200 pages of toner combined. That figure is useful for first-year planning: a light or moderate office may run for many months before buying toner. It is evidence of a large included supply, not proof that the model has the lowest lifetime CPP.
The printer is a monochrome unit with automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet paper tray, dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB 2.0. Brother rates print speed at up to 36 pages per minute. Those features make it suitable for text-heavy home offices and small workgroups that need networking and duplexing without a color engine.

Brother lists a recommended monthly print volume of up to 2,500 pages. It also lists a separate maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 35,000 pages. The maximum is a design-limit figure, not a target workload; using it as your normal monthly expectation can lead to excess wear, heat, and maintenance. Match your expected volume to the recommended range when comparing printers.

What the XL bundle changes
The standard HL-L2460DW is disclosed with a 700-page starter cartridge. The XL package instead supplies standard and high-yield cartridges totaling approximately 4,200 pages. The difference affects how soon you make the first toner purchase and how much spare stock you need, but it does not by itself establish a lower cost over the printer’s entire life. To prove that, you need current prices for each replacement cartridge and the drum, then need to amortize them over the pages you will actually print.
Consumables and their rated yields
| Supply | Published yield | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| TN830 standard toner | Approximately 1,200 pages | ISO/IEC 19752 estimate for single-sided A4/Letter pages on compatible HL-L2460DW-family models. |
| TN830XL high-yield toner | Approximately 3,000 pages | Higher-capacity replacement intended to reduce change frequency; use its local price in the CPP calculation. |
| TN830V toner | Approximately 3,300 pages | US-only cartridge documented by Brother; availability and price should be confirmed in the United States before using it in a comparison. |
| DR830 drum | Approximately 15,000 pages | Brother’s stated rating uses a one-page-per-job test condition, which can differ materially from normal multi-page jobs. |
The drum is a separate consumable from toner. Ignoring it makes a printer look cheaper than it is, especially for a high-volume user who reaches the drum’s rated life quickly. Divide the drum’s purchase price by its rated yield, then add that amount to toner CPP. If your printer uses a combined toner-and-drum cartridge, include the entire cartridge price instead of adding a separate drum line.
The 15,000-page DR830 rating deserves particular care. A one-page-per-job test can produce a different wear pattern from a workplace that prints long runs. Treat the rating as a standardized planning figure, not a promise that every user will obtain exactly 15,000 pages.
How to calculate a comparable CPP before buying
Step 1: Fix the comparison conditions
- Choose one region, such as the United States, and use prices from the same date.
- Use the same paper-size basis. Brother’s yields are for single-sided A4 or Letter pages under ISO/IEC 19752.
- Decide whether the comparison uses genuine manufacturer supplies or compatible cartridges. Do not mix the two.
- Separate monochrome workloads from color workloads. A color printer needs multiple color cartridges and often a different drum or imaging system.
- Estimate your real monthly volume and compare it with each manufacturer’s recommended range, not only its maximum duty cycle.
Step 2: Price every required supply
Record the current price and rated yield for the standard cartridge, high-yield cartridge, and drum. If a model has a waste-toner box, fuser, transfer belt, or other user-replaceable item that the manufacturer treats as a consumable, include it as well. If a component is not user-replaceable or no life rating is published, mark the value as not stated rather than guessing.
Step 3: Compute toner CPP
For each cartridge, divide price by yield. For example, the TN830XL line is calculated as its locally observed price divided by approximately 3,000 pages. Do not substitute the 4,200-page in-box figure for a replacement cartridge: that figure is the combined yield of two cartridges supplied with the XL printer.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Step 4: Add drum CPP
Divide the drum price by its rated life and add the result to toner CPP. If you expect to print fewer pages than the drum’s rating during ownership, estimate how many drums you will actually buy over your planned page total rather than assuming one drum lasts forever.
Step 5: Decide whether to include the printer purchase
Consumable CPP answers the recurring-supply question. Lifetime CPP also spreads the printer price over a defined page count. State that page count explicitly: a $229.99 printer spread over 2,000 pages produces a very different ownership figure from the same printer spread over 50,000 pages. Without a stated horizon, two apparently precise CPP numbers may not be comparable.
Step 6: Account for the starter supply
Starter toner is part of what you receive for the purchase price. Credit its rated pages once, then count only the replacement cartridges you would need after that supply is exhausted. Do not count the same starter pages again as if they were a free replacement purchase.

Comparison with other models
| Model or evidence | What is established | What is missing for a CPP ranking | Decision use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brother HL-L2460DW XL | $229.99 US listing accessed October 13, 2026; approximately 4,200 bundled toner pages; automatic duplex; 250-sheet tray; up to 36 ppm; Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB 2.0. | Current local replacement-toner and DR830 prices must be collected alongside rival prices. | Best-supported candidate when low replenishment frequency and a large included toner supply matter. |
| Brother HL-L2460DW | 700-page starter cartridge disclosed by Brother; same family of supplies is relevant to the comparison. | A complete dated purchase-and-consumables calculation against the XL package and competing printers. | Useful baseline for deciding whether the XL bundle justifies its higher purchase price. |
| Canon imageCLASS LBP246dw | Canon USA search material identifies 070/070 H toner and a 1,500-page yield. | The official page returned a 403 error; current printer price and replacement-toner price were not validated. | Do not rank it as cheaper or more expensive on the available figures alone. |
The table deliberately leaves the final winner open. A printer cannot be called the lowest-cost option when one side of the calculation has a verified cartridge yield but no current cartridge price. Check all supplies in the market where you will buy them, because regional pricing and availability can reverse a ranking.
Choosing between standard and high-yield cartridges
When high yield is usually the practical choice
- You print several hundred pages each month and want fewer interruptions.
- Your supplier’s high-yield price divided by its yield is lower than the standard cartridge’s CPP.
- You can store a spare cartridge in a dry, moderate-temperature location before its use-by guidance.
- Your documents are mostly ordinary text, so the ISO yield is a reasonable planning baseline.
When standard yield may be sensible
- Your volume is very low and a high-yield cartridge would sit unused for a long time.
- The standard cartridge is materially cheaper per page in your local market.
- You are testing a printer or expect to replace it before consuming a high-yield supply.
- High-yield stock is unavailable in your region.
Do not assume that the cartridge with the largest page number is automatically the cheapest. Compare price per rated page, then consider how many cartridges you will buy over your ownership period.
Workload, paper handling, and connectivity checks
Match volume to the recommended range
For the HL-L2460DW XL, up to 2,500 pages per month is the stated recommended volume. If your normal workload is near that level, duplex printing can reduce paper consumption and the 250-sheet tray can reduce refilling. If you routinely approach the separate 35,000-page maximum, that figure should prompt you to evaluate a printer designed for a higher recommended workload rather than treating the maximum as an operating target.

Confirm the way you print
Dual-band Wi-Fi is useful where the printer must join a modern wireless network; Ethernet is preferable for a fixed office connection; USB 2.0 provides a direct connection to one computer. Automatic duplexing matters when reports, drafts, or schoolwork are printed on both sides. These features do not lower toner CPP directly, but they can lower paper use and reduce the labor cost of running the printer.
Separate monochrome and color economics
The HL-L2460DW XL is monochrome. It is therefore a poor basis for a color-printing comparison: color models use separate black and color supplies, and a page with color elements can consume several cartridges at once. Choose a monochrome cost model if your work is primarily text, invoices, forms, or shipping labels; calculate a complete color set when color is a requirement.
Subscription and supply-plan caveats
Brother describes Refresh EZ Print as a US subscription option for eligible customers. Its disclosure compares a monthly Mono Laser Power Plan cost with average CPP for eligible standard-capacity cartridges, but the company says pricing, terms, and savings can change. The offer is for new subscribers in the contiguous United States and includes additional qualifications.
Do not insert a subscription price or claimed saving into a buying table without checking the live terms for your address and printer. A subscription can change the timing and predictability of payments, but it is not the same metric as the retail price of a cartridge. Compare the total subscription payments over your expected page count with the genuine-supply CPP, and check what happens if you print less than the plan allowance or cancel.

Before ordering, fill in one row for every printer under consideration:
| Input | Value to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Printer price | Local price, currency, date, and tax treatment | Sets the upfront cost and any lifetime-CPP calculation. |
| Starter toner | Cartridge model and rated pages | Credits the supply already included in the box. |
| Replacement toner | Model, price, and rated yield for each capacity | Determines recurring toner CPP. |
| Drum or imaging unit | Price, rated pages, and test condition | Prevents a separate consumable from being omitted. |
| Expected monthly pages | Your typical month and busy-month estimate | Checks fit against the recommended volume. |
| Workload type | Mostly text, mixed graphics, or heavy coverage | Explains why actual yield may differ from ISO estimates. |
| Connection and paper needs | Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, duplex, and tray capacity | Confirms the printer works in your environment. |
Once the rows are complete, calculate both recurring consumable CPP and lifetime CPP. Keep the assumptions beside each number so a later price change does not make the result look more certain than it is.

Common mistakes that produce a false winner
Using the bundle yield as a replacement yield
The XL printer’s approximately 4,200 included pages come from two cartridges. A replacement-cartridge calculation must use the yield of the individual cartridge being priced, such as approximately 3,000 pages for TN830XL.
Ignoring the drum
A toner-only comparison understates the cost of printers with a separately replaced drum. Add the drum’s amortized cost, and preserve the qualification that its rating was measured one page per job.
Comparing a starter cartridge with a full cartridge
Starter supplies are often smaller. Compare like with like: standard against standard, high-yield against high-yield, and include the starter supply only once in the ownership calculation.

A US printer price and a different country’s toner price can create a meaningless CPP. Record the market and access date for every figure, then refresh the calculation before buying.
Treating maximum duty cycle as recommended volume
The maximum monthly figure describes a design limit. The recommended monthly range is the better guide to sustained ownership and service expectations.
Assuming ISO yield equals every real document
Heavy graphics, bold coverage, labels, and repeated short jobs can consume toner faster than a standardized text-page test. Use the published yield for comparison, then budget a margin if your documents are unusually dense.
Who should choose the HL-L2460DW XL?
- Choose it when: you need a monochrome network printer, automatic duplexing, a 250-sheet tray, and approximately 4,200 pages of included toner to reduce early replenishment.
- Check further before buying when: your decision depends on the absolute lowest lifetime CPP, because current competitor toner and drum prices have not been established in the same comparison.
- Look for another class of printer when: you need color, your sustained volume exceeds the recommended range, or your local market cannot supply the relevant cartridges at predictable prices.
Bottom line
The Brother HL-L2460DW XL is the clearest current candidate for low replenishment frequency: its US listing combined a $229.99 price with approximately 4,200 pages of included toner, automatic duplexing, and office-friendly connectivity. Calling it the lowest-cost-per-page laser printer would go beyond the verified evidence. Make that claim only after pricing every competing toner and drum in the same region and date, applying the same yield assumptions, and matching the result to your real monthly workload.
