Test your current Windows 10 laptop before buying anything. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check and the Windows Update compatibility check. If the only failure is a disabled TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot setting, correct that setting after making a backup. If the processor is unsupported, or the machine cannot meet the memory or storage requirements, replacement is the practical path. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a laptop that cannot qualify for Windows 11 should not remain your primary, unpatched computer.
Why the Windows 10-to-11 decision is time-sensitive
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows Update no longer provides free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. That does not make every Windows 10 laptop unusable immediately, but it changes the risk calculation: an incompatible laptop is now a device you must replace, isolate, or otherwise retire rather than one you can safely keep on the old operating system indefinitely.
The right order is not “buy the newest laptop.” It is “establish whether your present hardware qualifies, fix a settings-only problem if possible, then replace only when a hard requirement fails.” This avoids spending money on a new computer when a firmware switch is all that prevents the upgrade.
Step 1: Check whether your existing laptop can run Windows 11
Run PC Health Check
Install and open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app, then select the Windows 11 eligibility check. Microsoft describes this as a comprehensive check for Windows 10 devices and says it can identify compatibility issues that temporarily delay an upgrade. It is more useful than guessing from the laptop’s age or processor marketing name.

Check Windows Update as a second signal
In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If Microsoft offers a Windows 11 upgrade, the device has passed the checks Microsoft is applying for that release. A missing offer alone is not a diagnosis, however; use PC Health Check to see which requirement is blocking the upgrade.
Back up before changing firmware or upgrading
Make a complete backup to an external SSD or hard drive before an in-place upgrade, BIOS/UEFI change, or recovery operation. Include documents, photos, browser data, password-manager exports, license keys, and any local files that are not synchronized elsewhere. Keep the backup disconnected after it finishes so a failed update or malware incident cannot damage both copies.
Windows 11’s hard minimums
Microsoft’s current requirements are thresholds, not recommendations for a comfortable long-term experience. A laptop can technically qualify and still feel cramped if it has minimal memory, a nearly full drive, or a poor display.
| Requirement | Microsoft minimum | What to verify | Can you upgrade it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit CPU, 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores | Exact processor model and Microsoft’s supported-CPU status in PC Health Check | Clock speed and core count are inherent to the processor design and are not laptop-upgradable components. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Installed RAM and whether the laptop has accessible slots or soldered memory | Sometimes; depends on the design. Do not assume a slot exists. |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger storage device | Drive capacity, free space, drive type, and whether an SSD can be replaced | Often possible, but model-specific. |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability | UEFI mode and Secure Boot state in firmware or Windows System Information | Usually a setting if the hardware supports it; changing it carries recovery risk. |
| Security module | TPM version 2.0 | TPM status and version in Windows Security or firmware | Often a disabled firmware option; not every older laptop has TPM 2.0. |
| Setup connectivity | Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro setup require internet access and a Microsoft account | Reliable internet and account access during first-run setup | Not a hardware upgrade; plan for it before reinstalling. |
How to interpret a failed compatibility result
TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot is disabled
A settings-only failure can be fixable. Consult the laptop manufacturer’s support instructions for entering UEFI/BIOS setup and enabling the relevant TPM option (the label may be a vendor-specific security setting) or Secure Boot. Back up first, record your current settings, and do not change storage-controller, boot-mode, or encryption settings casually. If BitLocker or another device-encryption system is enabled, make sure you have its recovery key before firmware changes.
After saving the setting, boot back into Windows and run PC Health Check again. If the app still reports a processor or other hardware failure, the firmware change did not make the laptop eligible.
The processor is unsupported
Treat an unsupported processor as a replacement decision. Microsoft explicitly says the 1 GHz clock-speed and two-core requirements are inherent to processor design and are not considered upgradable components. A faster SSD or additional RAM cannot turn an unsupported CPU into a supported one, and unofficial installation methods can leave you outside normal support and security expectations.

Besides, the backlit keyboard allows for comfortable work in any lighting, and the fingerprint reader strengthens security
RAM or storage is below the requirement
If the laptop has less than 4 GB of RAM or less than 64 GB of storage, determine whether an upgrade is physically and economically sensible. Soldered memory, proprietary drives, difficult disassembly, or a battery and keyboard near the end of their lives can make a replacement better value. Meeting the bare minimum also leaves little headroom, so a replacement should target substantially more than 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
What to buy when replacement is necessary
Shop by the exact configuration, not a family name. Two laptops with the same model label can differ in processor, memory, SSD, screen, wireless card, operating-system edition, keyboard layout, and regional warranty. Ask the seller for the complete part number or SKU and verify it against the manufacturer’s specification sheet before paying.
Processor and Windows 11 eligibility
Choose a current processor generation that the manufacturer lists with Windows 11. The listing should identify the exact CPU, not merely “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5.” A model with a supported processor gives you a clearer upgrade path and avoids the unsupported-CPU problem that cannot be repaired later.
Memory: use 16 GB as a longevity target
Four gigabytes is only Microsoft’s minimum. For a general-purpose laptop expected to last through several Windows updates, target 16 GB when the budget allows. Check whether the memory is soldered, socketed, or a mixture; a 16 GB configuration that cannot be expanded may still be appropriate, while an 8 GB machine with an open slot can offer a lower-cost upgrade path. Confirm the maximum supported capacity rather than assuming a slot accepts any module.
Storage and upgradeability
Prefer an SSD and choose capacity according to your files, applications, and recovery space. A 64 GB drive meets the formal requirement but can fill quickly after Windows, updates, applications, and temporary files are installed. If you store photos, video, games, or virtual machines locally, choose more capacity or confirm that the SSD can be replaced. Verify whether the laptop has a standard removable drive, a second slot, or only soldered storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDisplay, keyboard, and everyday usability
- Display: Check resolution, brightness, panel type, finish, refresh rate, and color coverage in the exact SKU. A Windows 11-ready computer is still a poor purchase if text is dim or cramped for your work.
- Keyboard and pointing device: Confirm key layout, backlight, travel, touchpad size, and the presence of dedicated navigation keys if you use them.
- Webcam and microphones: Look for the camera resolution and physical privacy controls when video calls are important.
- Ports: Count the connectors you actually use—USB-A, USB-C, display output, audio, Ethernet, and a card reader. USB-C charging or video support is not guaranteed merely because a USB-C port is present.
- Weight and construction: Compare the listed weight with the travel, charger, and any dock you will carry.
- Battery: Treat manufacturer battery claims as configuration- and test-dependent. No single universal battery-life score establishes one laptop as best; consider capacity, screen choice, workload, and the return policy.
- Warranty: Check duration, accidental-damage options, repair process, and whether coverage applies in your country.
A documented Windows 11-ready example: ThinkPad E14 Gen 6
Lenovo publishes Windows 11 Pro configurations for the ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 on both AMD and Intel product pages. That makes it a concrete model family to investigate when replacing an incompatible Windows 10 laptop. It is not proof that every E14 Gen 6 listing has the same parts: Lenovo’s PSREF documentation warns that specifications vary by region and can change. Verify the exact SKU, processor, RAM, SSD, display, keyboard, operating-system edition, and warranty for the unit you will receive.

| What the listing must identify | ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 Pro configurations are published for AMD and Intel versions; exact edition varies by SKU. | Home and Pro setup requirements differ from business-management expectations, so confirm the edition before purchase. |
| Processor | Choose the exact AMD or Intel CPU shown on the seller’s part-number page. | Eligibility and performance depend on the installed processor, not the E14 name alone. |
| Memory | Record the installed amount and whether it is upgradeable for your region’s configuration. | Use 16 GB as a practical longevity target and confirm expansion before assuming it is available. |
| SSD | Record capacity and replaceability from the exact specification. | Storage options can differ even within one model family. |
| Display, ports, battery, and weight | Use the regional specification for the exact SKU; values are not stated universally for every E14 Gen 6. | These characteristics affect comfort and mobility more than the family name does. |
| Warranty | Confirm the seller’s and manufacturer’s regional terms. | Service availability is geographic and configuration-dependent. |
Use the E14 Gen 6 as a checklist example rather than a blanket “best” verdict. If one listing has 8 GB of soldered memory and another has 16 GB with an expansion option, they are different purchases even when both are called E14 Gen 6.
Match the replacement to your workload
Office, web, and study work
Prioritize a supported current-generation processor, 16 GB RAM where affordable, an SSD with enough free space for your files, a comfortable keyboard, and a readable display. You do not need a discrete graphics processor for ordinary documents, browsers, video calls, and accounting applications.
Programming and technical applications
Favor 16 GB or more of RAM, a replaceable SSD, a strong keyboard, reliable USB-C and display output, and a processor with enough sustained performance for compilers, containers, or local development tools. Check virtualization support if your tools require virtual machines.

Prioritize display quality and color characteristics, memory capacity, sustained cooling, fast and expandable storage, and ports for external drives or displays. Windows 11 eligibility is only the baseline; your software’s own CPU, GPU, RAM, and codec requirements should decide the final configuration.
Frequent travel
Compare actual weight, charger size, battery capacity, screen brightness, webcam quality, and durability. A smaller screen can reduce weight but may require a monitor at your desk, so include that accessory in the total cost.

Set up Windows 11
During first-run setup, Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require internet access and a Microsoft account. Have those credentials and a reliable network available. Install updates, verify activation, and enable the security features offered by the system before copying personal data.
Restore and verify
Copy data from the backup rather than relying on a single synchronization service. Reinstall applications from their legitimate installers, test printers and external displays, and confirm that documents, photos, browser data, and accessibility settings are present. Keep the old laptop untouched until the new one has passed this checklist.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Buying from a family name alone
Recover by requesting the exact SKU and comparing its processor, RAM, SSD, display, and warranty with the invoice. Return or exchange the computer if the delivered configuration does not match the listing.
Enabling Secure Boot without checking encryption
If Windows asks for a recovery key after a firmware change, use the key saved before the change. If you cannot produce it, stop changing settings and seek manufacturer or professional recovery help; repeated firmware changes can make data recovery harder.
Assuming more RAM fixes an unsupported CPU
It does not. Memory and storage upgrades can improve capacity, but they cannot alter the processor’s supported status. Recheck PC Health Check after hardware changes and replace the laptop when the CPU remains unsupported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Running out of storage after the upgrade
Remove temporary files and unused applications only after confirming your backup. If the drive is genuinely too small, replace it only when the model supports a compatible SSD and you have a recovery plan; otherwise, use an external drive for data and plan a replacement.
Bottom-line buying decision
Keep the current laptop if PC Health Check passes or if a documented TPM/Secure Boot setting is the only fix required and the machine otherwise meets your needs. Replace it when the processor is unsupported, the required hardware cannot be upgraded, or repair cost approaches the price of a suitable Windows 11 system. For a replacement, buy the exact configuration—not a vague model family—with a supported processor, a practical memory target such as 16 GB, adequate SSD capacity, usable display and ports, and a warranty valid in your region. The ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 is one documented Windows 11 Pro model family to investigate, but Lenovo’s regional specifications mean every listing still requires verification.
