For web browsing and email, choose a Chromebook if the services and everyday tasks you rely on work in a browser and you do not need Windows-only software. Choose a Windows laptop if you need a particular desktop application or wider software compatibility. For either type, start with 8 GB of RAM, then check the exact model’s screen, storage, and independently tested battery life.
Choose the operating system that fits your apps
When a Chromebook makes sense
A Chromebook is a practical fit when your email, documents, and other essential services work in a browser, and ChromeOS supports any offline tasks you need. Google’s category guide lists base Chromebooks with 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB or more of storage, while Chromebook Plus models start at 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or more of storage. Those category specifications are not a guarantee that every Chromebook suits every workload. Check the exact configuration and required services before buying. Google’s Chromebook guide describes the categories.
When Windows is the safer choice
Choose Windows if a required program needs Windows or you depend on desktop software that ChromeOS does not support. Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guide can help you assess hardware, but verify compatibility for the particular applications you use, including whether they work offline.

Memory: aim for 8 GB for light browsing
Microsoft says 8 GB is fine for light browsing and most tasks. It is a reasonable starting point for a basic laptop, not a promise that every configuration will feel fast in every situation. If you usually keep many tabs or applications open, consider more memory if your budget allows. Google’s 4 GB base Chromebook category is a product specification, not a general recommendation for every user.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Storage: match capacity to your files
Think about what you will keep on the laptop. If you mostly use cloud services and keep few files locally, you may need less storage; Microsoft makes this distinction in its buying guide. Google lists 32 GB or more for its base Chromebook category and 128 GB or more for Chromebook Plus. Check the capacity of the exact model and configuration you are considering.
Screen: resolution does not tell the whole story
Microsoft defines Full HD (FHD) as 1920 × 1080, a useful reference for screen sharpness. Also check screen size, brightness, and glare: a clear resolution alone does not guarantee a comfortable display for reading. A Tom’s Guide review of the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10, for example, identifies its display brightness as a compromise.

Battery: look for a test of the specific model
Battery runtime varies with configuration and use. Prefer an independent test of the exact laptop rather than treating a manufacturer estimate or a result from another model in the same product family as a guarantee. The examples below are Tom’s Guide test results for the configurations it reviewed, not promises for every version of those laptops.
Examples of the trade-offs
These reviewed models illustrate different choices; neither is a universal recommendation. Configuration, availability, and price can vary by country and date, so confirm the current listing and specifications before deciding.

| Model | System and reviewed configuration | Reported battery result | Relevant trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10 | ChromeOS; 14-inch 1920 × 1200 touchscreen; Intel Core 3 N355; 8 GB RAM; 128 GB storage | 8 hours 32 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s web-use test | Tom’s Guide praises its versatility and typing, but notes a dim display and battery life as compromises. |
| Dell XPS 13 (2026) | Windows; Intel Core 5 320; tested configuration with 8 GB RAM; 13.4-inch 2560 × 1600 touchscreen | 14 hours 29 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s test | A Windows comparison example that may be more than a browsing-and-email user needs; the review also notes a webcam image-quality drawback. |
| Asus Chromebook CM14 | ChromeOS; the TechRadar guide does not state a configuration in the cited summary | 9.5 hours in TechRadar’s test | A budget-class example; TechRadar notes limits under heavier multitasking and a dimmer screen. Confirm the precise configuration and support status. |

A quick buying checklist
- Confirm your essential apps and services work with the operating system, including any offline workflow you need.
- Use 8 GB of RAM as a sensible starting point for light browsing; allow for more if you routinely multitask heavily.
- Choose storage based on how many files you keep locally, and verify the exact configuration.
- Check screen size, resolution, brightness, and glare—not resolution alone.
- Look for an independent battery test of the specific model and configuration.
- Verify current price, availability, specifications, and operating-system support in your region; these can change.
Models to treat as dated examples
Stuff’s budget guide includes older examples such as the Asus VivoBook X1500EA and Chromebook CX1100. Treat them as historical examples, not current recommendations, unless you verify present availability, the exact specifications, and operating-system support. Stuff’s budget laptop guide is the source for those examples.
