For most Kodi users, NordVPN is the strongest all-round choice in the latest device-specific comparison, while IPVanish leads Top10VPN’s Kodi-focused ranking. ExpressVPN is the best fit when access to a location-restricted add-on is the priority; Proton VPN is the privacy-and-free-plan pick; and Private Internet Access is a flexible alternative with broad app support. These conclusions come from separate 2026 evaluations, not a new side-by-side test, so performance on your connection can differ.
Kodi has no built-in VPN switch. Install the provider’s official app on the same device, connect before opening Kodi, and use a compatible router only when the device cannot run a suitable VPN app.
The five best VPNs for Kodi in 2026
The table separates measurements made on different platforms and by different publishers. A Fire TV Stick result does not predict Windows performance, and a successful test with one legal add-on does not guarantee access to another.

Gizmodo’s percentages are its own 2026 measurements on a Fire TV Stick and Windows. They are not guarantees for a particular server, protocol, Wi-Fi link, device generation, or subscription version. Top10VPN says it evaluated 59 VPNs over more than 30,000 testing hours; its Kodi page is marked updated July 3, 2026 and lists an IPVanish test from September 2026, so treat the figures as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent specification. Neither speed nor add-on access is universal. Server distance, congestion, VPN protocol, stream bitrate, and the add-on’s own location controls can change the result within minutes.
1. NordVPN: the best all-round Kodi choice
NordVPN is the most balanced pick if you want one service for a Fire TV Stick, a Windows media PC, and other household devices. Gizmodo named it the overall Kodi choice after testing add-ons and performance on both platforms. Its measured loss was 3.0% on Fire TV Stick and 7.8% on Windows, the lowest Fire TV figure among the five services in that comparison.
Gizmodo also connected it successfully to Pluto TV through a legal Kodi add-on. That demonstrates compatibility with that particular service at test time; it does not mean every regional add-on will work. Choose a nearby server first, then try a server in the country required by the legitimate service if the add-on still reports a location error.
Who should choose it
- Fire TV users who want the smallest measured speed penalty in Gizmodo’s test.
- Households that will switch between streaming devices rather than use Kodi on only one computer.
- Viewers who want a conventional app-first setup instead of router configuration.
What to verify before paying
- Current Fire TV app availability for your exact device generation.
- The plan’s simultaneous-connection allowance and renewal price.
- Whether the current app exposes a kill switch on your operating system.
Those commercial and feature details change, and the cited comparison does not establish a universal current price.
2. IPVanish: Top10VPN’s Kodi-focused winner
Top10VPN ranks IPVanish first in its Kodi guide, assigning a 9.4/10 overall Kodi score and a 9.8/10 speed score. Its reported loss was 4% on nearby servers and 12% averaged across measurements in 112 countries. These are Top10VPN results, not independently replicated measurements.
The ranking is useful when your priority is a Kodi-specific evaluation rather than a single-device speed test. However, the cited Gizmodo comparison does not provide matching Fire TV Stick or Windows percentages for IPVanish, nor does it report a Pluto TV result for it. If Kodi runs on a streaming stick, confirm that the provider currently offers an official app for that model before subscribing.

Best use case
IPVanish suits readers who value a large tested-country footprint and want to start from the highest Kodi-specific score in Top10VPN’s guide. Test a nearby endpoint during your actual viewing hours; the 12% average is not a promise that every route will lose 12%.
Privacy evidence
Top10VPN reports no IP leaks for its three recommended services—IPVanish, ExpressVPN, and Proton VPN—in its own tests. A leak result is a snapshot of that test configuration, not a substitute for reading the provider’s current logging policy or checking your own connection.
3. ExpressVPN: strongest fit for location-restricted add-ons
ExpressVPN appears in both major comparisons and is Top10VPN’s recommendation for geo-restricted Kodi add-ons. Gizmodo measured 4.6% speed loss on Fire TV Stick and 7.8% on Windows, and its Pluto TV add-on test succeeded.
The two platform figures are identical on Windows for NordVPN and ExpressVPN in Gizmodo’s table, while ExpressVPN’s Fire TV result was slightly higher. That difference is small enough that server selection, Wi-Fi quality, and the add-on’s own behavior may matter more in everyday use.
When it is the better choice
- Your legitimate add-on requires a specific country and location handling matters more than the absolute lowest measured loss.
- You use both a TV stick and a Windows media center and want reported app support on both.
- You prefer a provider evaluated by both a Kodi-specific guide and a device-performance comparison.
Check the current country list, app support, simultaneous-device allowance, and renewal terms at checkout; the cited pages do not provide a stable price schedule.

Proton VPN is the privacy-oriented option in this lineup. Top10VPN includes it among its three recommendations and reports no IP leaks for it in that guide’s tests. Its free plan offers unlimited data, which removes the monthly cap found on many no-cost services.

The trade-off is location-sensitive streaming. Gizmodo measured 5.3% loss on Fire TV Stick and 10.2% on Windows, but its Pluto TV add-on test returned a region error. That result may reflect the free tier’s available locations or the service’s detection at that time; it should not be generalized to every paid server or add-on.
Fire TV requirement
Gizmodo reported a Fire TV app with a minimum Fire OS version. The exact requirement can change, so check the current app listing on your device before installation. If your stick cannot run the app, a compatible router is the alternative, provided its firmware supports VPN client connections.
Who benefits most
Choose Proton VPN when unlimited data and a privacy-first policy matter more than guaranteed access to a particular location-sensitive add-on. For a specific streaming catalog, test the service during the refund or cancellation window offered by the current plan.

5. Private Internet Access: flexible apps with a slower test result
Private Internet Access (PIA) had a Fire TV app in Gizmodo’s comparison and produced 7.9% Fire TV Stick speed loss and 12.7% on Windows. Those were the highest losses among the five services in that test, although a 12.7% reduction can still be acceptable if your connection has ample bandwidth for the stream.
Gizmodo’s Pluto TV test returned a region error. Treat that as a warning for that particular location-sensitive add-on, not proof that every legal Kodi source will fail.
When PIA still makes sense
- Your main requirement is app availability across several operating systems.
- You have enough unused bandwidth that the measured loss will not push the stream below its required bitrate.
- You can test your chosen add-on and server before committing to a long renewal term.
Confirm current Fire TV compatibility, kill-switch behavior, device limits, and renewal pricing because these are service-plan details rather than fixed Kodi properties.

Does a VPN slow down Kodi?
Yes, encryption and rerouting can reduce throughput, but the size of the reduction depends on the route and device. In Gizmodo’s measurements, the five services lost between 3.0% and 7.9% on Fire TV Stick and between 7.8% and 12.7% on Windows. A different protocol, server, or internet provider can produce a different result.

How to reduce buffering
- Connect to a nearby server unless the legal service requires a particular country.
- Use the provider’s fastest or automatic protocol setting first; change protocols only if the app documents the option and your device supports it.
- Run a speed test with the VPN disconnected and connected at the same time of day.
- Compare the result with the stream’s required bitrate, leaving headroom for household traffic.
- If buffering begins, try another nearby server before changing video quality.
A VPN cannot repair an overloaded Wi-Fi network, a weak Fire TV signal, an underpowered Raspberry Pi, or an unavailable source stream.

Security.org describes two practical approaches: install the official app directly on the Kodi device, or configure a VPN client on a compatible router. Native apps are simpler because you can change servers and disconnect without affecting the rest of the household.
Method 1: install on Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Windows, or another supported device
- Open the device’s official app store or the provider’s official download page. Avoid APK mirrors and unofficial installers.
- Install the VPN application and sign in with the subscription account, or select the provider’s free tier if available.
- Allow the app’s VPN connection request when the operating system asks.
- Choose a nearby server, or the country required by the legitimate add-on.
- Wait for the app to show that the tunnel is connected.
- Launch Kodi only after the VPN reports a connection.
- Open the add-on and test playback. If it reports a region error, disconnect and try another permitted server location.
Do not give VPN credentials to a third-party Kodi add-on. Use the provider’s own app and account system.
Method 2: configure a compatible router
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface and check whether its firmware supports an outbound VPN client, not merely VPN pass-through.
- Obtain the configuration instructions and server files for your provider and router model from the provider’s official support channel.
- Import the configuration, enter the account credentials, and enable the client.
- Connect the Kodi device to that router network.
- Verify the public IP and DNS behavior with a reputable leak-check service, then open Kodi and test the add-on.
Many stock routers do not support VPN client mode, and menus differ by firmware. A router tunnel also covers every device on that network, so it may be less convenient when only Kodi needs the VPN.

These setups often lack the same app-store experience as Fire TV or Windows. Confirm that your chosen provider publishes a supported configuration for the exact LibreELEC version and network manager you use. If it does not, place the Pi behind a compatible router rather than installing an untrusted package.

Does Kodi have a built-in VPN?
No. Kodi is media-center software, not a VPN client. Gizmodo’s guide explains that the normal arrangement is a separate VPN application running on the same device before Kodi starts. Router configuration is the fallback for hardware that cannot run a native app. Kodi add-ons are not a safe place to enter VPN credentials, and a provider may not offer an official Kodi-specific add-on at all.
Free VPNs for Kodi: what you give up
Free plans can work for limited viewing, but examine four constraints: monthly data, available server countries, simultaneous devices, and streaming reliability.
Gizmodo reports that Windscribe and PrivadoVPN worked in its free Kodi test with a 10 GB monthly allowance. In that test context, the guide estimated roughly five hours of HD streaming; actual hours vary with resolution and bitrate. Proton VPN’s free plan provides unlimited data, but it did not perform as well for the location-sensitive test described above.
A capped plan can be adequate for occasional catch-up viewing, while a household watching HD or 4K every day will usually exhaust 10 GB quickly. Do not interpret a successful free test as a guarantee that a particular catalog or add-on will remain available.
Safety, privacy, and copyright
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server and can conceal your home IP address from the destination. It does not make an unlicensed stream legal, remove copyright obligations, or guarantee anonymity. Gizmodo distinguishes Kodi itself—free, open-source software whose official repository offers legal add-ons—from unofficial third-party add-ons that may carry unlawful streams.
Use official repositories and legitimate services, keep Kodi and the VPN app updated, and avoid installers from unknown mirrors. A leak check can show whether your IP or DNS appears exposed in one session, but it cannot verify what a provider logs. Read the current privacy policy and any independent audit information before relying on a service for sensitive activity.
How to choose among the five
- Start with the device. Confirm an official app for Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Windows, or your LibreELEC build. If none exists, verify router-client support.
- Set a speed threshold. Measure your unprotected connection, then choose a service whose tested loss leaves enough bandwidth for your stream.
- Test the exact legal add-on. Pluto TV results differed in Gizmodo’s test, proving that add-on access is not interchangeable.
- Check privacy controls. Look for a kill switch, leak protection, and a clear logging policy in the current app and documentation.
- Count household devices. Compare the plan’s simultaneous-connection limit with every TV, computer, phone, and tablet you expect to connect.
- Price the renewal, not only the introduction. Promotional rates and renewal prices can differ, and the cited comparisons do not establish a permanent price.
For the simplest recommendation, start with NordVPN. If you are following Top10VPN’s Kodi-specific ranking, start with IPVanish. Pick ExpressVPN when location handling is central, Proton VPN when unlimited free data and privacy are the priority, and PIA when broad app flexibility outweighs its slower measured results.
