The best starting point for smooth Kodi playback on a smart TV is not one “maximum performance” preset. In Kodi 21 (Omega), set Settings > Player > Videos > Adjust display refresh rate to On start/stop when both the TV and Kodi device support refresh-rate switching. This addresses uneven motion caused by frame-rate mismatch. For repeated pauses, use Settings > Services > Caching and select the buffer mode that matches your source, but change memory, read-factor and chunk-size values cautiously. Leave Sync playback to display off unless you specifically need timing correction, because Kodi warns that it disables audio passthrough. Hardware decoding must match what your particular TV or box supports; no setting can compensate for an unsupported codec, an inadequate connection or a device that cannot decode the file in real time.
Which Kodi settings should I change first?
Use this order so that you solve the actual symptom instead of changing several variables at once:
- Match the display refresh rate. Open
Settings > Player > Videosand set Adjust display refresh rate to On start/stop. Kodi changes the connected display to a refresh rate that matches the video frame rate, which can remove judder. The screen may go blank for a few seconds while the TV changes mode. Kodi lists Always, but its documentation does not recommend it. See the Kodi video-player settings documentation. - Identify pauses as buffering before touching playback timing. Repeated stops usually require checking the source, network path, bitrate and the v21 caching page, not a frame-rate toggle.
- Choose the correct cache mode. In
Settings > Services > Caching, select the mode for an internet stream, a network filesystem or all filesystems. Then make only one cache change and test the same source again. - Keep display-sync correction separate from refresh switching. Use Sync playback to display only when you are deliberately correcting timing and accept that audio passthrough will be disabled.
- Check decoding capability. Leave hardware-acceleration choices at the platform-supported default first. If a change produces artifacts or crashes, revert it.
Some entries are hidden until Kodi’s settings level is raised from the basic view. The exact hardware-acceleration choices also vary by platform, so a menu seen on Android may not appear on another smart-TV operating system.
First, separate judder, buffering and decoding failure
These problems look similar from the sofa but require different fixes.

| What you see | Most likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Motion looks uneven while playback continues and there is no loading pause | Video frame rate does not align with the display refresh rate | Player > Videos > Adjust display refresh rate |
| Playback stops, shows a loading indicator or repeatedly pauses | Source, network throughput or cache behavior | Services > Caching, source type and network path |
| Video breaks up, shows artifacts, runs slowly or crashes | Codec, resolution or hardware-decoding capability | Platform-supported hardware acceleration and the file’s format |
| Sound and picture gradually lose timing | Display-clock and playback timing | Playback information overlay, then consider display-sync correction |
A cache cannot repair a device that cannot decode the video, and refresh matching cannot create bandwidth. Diagnose the visible symptom before changing a setting.
Set refresh-rate matching for smoother motion
Use “On start/stop” as the conservative default
Go to Settings > Player > Videos, find Adjust display refresh rate, and choose On start/stop. When playback begins or ends, Kodi requests a display mode that matches the video’s frame rate. The TV can therefore present the cadence more evenly than it would when every video is forced through one fixed refresh mode. This control is for motion judder, not for an internet connection that is running out of data.
The display can briefly turn black while it switches modes. That pause is the TV changing refresh settings, not Kodi buffering. If the picture returns after the mode change, the behavior is expected. If it does not, return to the menu with the remote and disable the option or select a mode supported by both the TV and Kodi device.
Why “Always” is not the general recommendation
Kodi exposes Always as another choice, but the video-settings documentation does not recommend it. The conservative choice is to switch only when playback starts or stops, avoiding unnecessary display changes during ordinary navigation and other content. Whether switching works at all depends on the display chain: the TV, the Kodi-capable device and any intervening connection must expose the desired refresh modes.
Do not confuse refresh switching with “Sync playback to display”
Sync playback to display is a different mechanism. It adjusts playback speed to keep video timing aligned with the display. Kodi warns that enabling it disables audio passthrough because Kodi may need to alter the audio timing. If you rely on a receiver or sound system receiving the original audio stream, do not enable this as a blanket “smoothness” fix. Try refresh-rate matching first; investigate sync only when the playback information overlay indicates a timing problem that refresh switching did not solve.
Configure Kodi 21 caching without overfilling memory
Open the v21 caching page
In Kodi 21, open Settings > Services > Caching. Kodi moved these cache controls into the graphical interface in v21; the older XML approach is deprecated and ignored for these settings. The official page is marked as updated for v21 in the Kodi caching documentation.
Start by selecting the buffer mode that describes where the media comes from:

The page also exposes memory size, read factor and chunk size. The right values depend on the source, the device and the available memory; there is no documented value that is best for every smart TV.
Understand the documented read-factor behavior
Kodi’s documentation gives a default read factor of 4x. That is a setting documented by Kodi, not a benchmark or a promise that four times more data will always improve playback. Kodi also describes adaptive behavior. Lower read factors can be more suitable on less powerful Android devices, while high-bitrate Blu-ray or UHD files and a slow network create different demands.
Do not simply set every cache value to its maximum. A larger memory allocation can compete with the TV’s other tasks, and an aggressive read rate can make a modest device work harder without increasing the sustained throughput of the connection. The cache can help maintain a buffer or make initial buffering faster when the source and connection can supply data; it cannot make an inadequate connection, unsupported codec or incapable device adequate.
Change one cache value at a time
- Note the current values on the Caching page.
- Choose the source mode that matches the stream or network share.
- Change one control, such as memory size or read factor, and leave the others unchanged.
- Replay the same file or stream from the same point, preferably after allowing it to reach the same starting condition.
- Keep the change only if pauses improve without new crashes, audio problems or interface instability; otherwise restore the previous value.
This controlled approach tells you whether the cache helped. Changing memory, read factor and chunk size simultaneously makes a result impossible to interpret.
Hardware decoding: use what the TV platform actually supports
Kodi’s hardware-acceleration controls are platform-specific. Android devices differ in the codecs, resolutions and profiles they can decode, so there is no single hardware-decoding switch that should be enabled on every smart TV. Begin with the defaults supplied for your platform and test a representative file. If playback is smooth, leave the setting alone.
If a video shows visual artifacts, fails to start or causes Kodi to crash after changing an acceleration option, revert that option. A software-decoding fallback may work for a lower-complexity file, but it cannot guarantee smooth playback for every high-resolution or high-bitrate source. Conversely, a file that exceeds the device’s decoder capability will remain problematic regardless of cache size.
Compare the file with the device, not just the screen resolution
A TV advertised as 4K does not automatically mean that every 4K file can be decoded through Kodi. For each troublesome file, consider:

- The codec and profile used by the file.
- The video’s resolution and bitrate, especially with Blu-ray or UHD material.
- Whether the Kodi platform exposes hardware decoding for that format.
- Whether the display chain supports the requested refresh-rate and HDR modes.
- Whether the source can deliver the data continuously if the file is remote.
Use the same comparison when choosing between a TV’s built-in Kodi-capable environment and a separate Kodi device: supported codecs and hardware decoding, refresh-rate switching, network connection and stable Kodi availability matter more than a generic “powerful” label. Kodi states that it does not promote one hardware product over another; consult the platform’s own capability information instead. Its software information explains that position.
Verify the Kodi platform and installation
Install a stable Kodi release appropriate for the TV platform. Kodi provides platform downloads for Android and webOS, while the general official download page lists available builds. Menu names and hardware options can differ between platforms and releases, so a guide written for one operating system may not match your TV exactly.
Kodi itself supplies the player application, not a catalog of media. You must provide your own lawful files or use media sources you are authorized to access. An add-on or stream that is unreliable, overloaded or unauthorized cannot be made dependable by changing Kodi’s cache.
When a setting described in this guide is missing, raise Kodi’s settings level and check that the installed build supports the feature. If the TV’s operating system does not offer the required Kodi version or display controls, a different Kodi-capable platform may be necessary; that is a compatibility decision, not a cache-setting problem.
Use Kodi’s playback information overlay to find the bottleneck
Kodi’s player-process information view provides dynamic playback diagnostics. The information shown depends partly on the refresh-rate and display-sync settings. Open the playback information overlay while the problem is occurring and use it to distinguish a display-timing issue from a playback or source issue. The Kodi player-process information reference documents this diagnostic view.

If the problem appears only as uneven cadence while data continues, revisit refresh matching. If playback stops while data is unavailable, inspect the source and cache path. If the file remains supplied but decoding cannot keep up, investigate hardware support and the file’s codec or resolution.
Why is Kodi buffering?
The source is an internet stream
Select the internet-stream cache mode, then test whether the stream pauses at the same points. Confirm that the source itself is stable and that the connection can sustain the file’s bitrate. A cache can smooth short interruptions when data arrives again, but it cannot raise the connection’s sustained capacity. If several different sources pause while local files play normally, the network or source is more suspect than the display settings.

The source is a network file
Use the network-filesystem mode and check the path between the storage system, router and TV or Kodi device. High-bitrate files place greater demands on a slow network. If the TV or box has an Ethernet port, a properly installed Ethernet cable is a reasonable troubleshooting experiment for a network-related symptom; Kodi’s documentation does not test particular cables or guarantee that wired networking will fix internet-stream buffering.
The cache appears to fill and then empty
That pattern means Kodi is consuming data faster than the source is replenishing it. Record the current cache values, adjust one control, and repeat the same test. If no conservative cache change helps, stop increasing memory and investigate throughput, source bitrate, device capability or the network path instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does Kodi stutter without buffering?
Stutter that does not show a loading pause is often a cadence problem. Set Adjust display refresh rate to On start/stop, verify that the TV and Kodi device support the mode, and allow the brief blank screen during the switch. Do not enable Sync playback to display merely because motion looks uneven; it has the separate audio-passthrough consequence described above.
If matching is enabled but motion remains uneven, inspect the playback information overlay and test another file with a different frame rate. A file may also exceed the decoder’s capability, in which case changing display timing will not solve the underlying workload.
What to do when 4K or high-bitrate video still fails
- Play a lower-bitrate or lower-resolution file from the same source. If it works while the original fails, the file’s decoding or sustained-transfer demand is a useful clue.
- Check whether the platform supports hardware decoding for the file’s codec and profile. Hardware options are not interchangeable across Android, webOS and other platforms.
- Check the network path if the file is remote, especially for Blu-ray or UHD content. The cache can maintain a buffer only when the source can deliver enough data.
- Check the display chain’s supported refresh-rate and HDR modes. A 4K panel alone does not prove that every requested mode is available.
- Undo any recent acceleration or cache change that introduced artifacts, crashes or worse pauses, then retest from the known-good baseline.
A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
Use this sequence whenever a new stream or file behaves badly:
- Classify the symptom: uneven motion, loading pauses, decoding artifacts or audio/video drift.
- Return to a known baseline: use platform-supported hardware defaults and record existing cache values.
- Test local versus remote media: a local file can separate network problems from decoder and display problems.
- Apply refresh matching: enable On start/stop and wait for the display-mode transition.
- Inspect playback information: look at the overlay during the fault rather than after playback has recovered.
- Adjust caching only for buffering: select the correct source mode and change one value at a time.
- Test the same material again: keep the source, file and viewing conditions consistent so the result is meaningful.
- Revert unsuccessful changes: artifacts, crashes, audio-passthrough loss or new instability are reasons to undo a setting.
How to choose between smart-TV Kodi options
When comparing a built-in TV installation with another Kodi-capable setup, use these practical axes rather than a brand name:

Version and menu-label caveats
This guide follows the official Kodi 21 (Omega) settings documentation, including the v21 move of cache controls into the GUI. Kodi releases can change labels, available settings and platform support. If your installation is newer or uses a vendor-specific build, verify the corresponding menu and capability documentation before applying a setting literally. The principles remain separate: refresh matching addresses cadence, caching addresses data delivery, and hardware decoding addresses whether the device can process the file.
