Short answer: a Kobo can replace a Kindle for reading purchased books in compatible formats and for borrowing from supported libraries, but it does not automatically inherit your Amazon Kindle library. Check your library service and your essential Kindle titles before you switch. For most former Kindle owners, the choice is straightforward: Kobo Clara BW for compact, text-first reading; Kobo Clara Colour for a small color screen; and Kobo Libra Colour for a larger display, physical page-turn buttons, and optional stylus annotation.
The three models share Kobo’s core reading experience, but they target different habits. Screen size, color, buttons, storage, waterproofing, and file rights matter more than a simple “Kindle versus Kobo” brand decision.
Which Kobo should a former Kindle user buy?
Use this decision table first, then read the transfer and library sections before ordering. The prices are the amounts shown on Kobo’s US comparison page when checked in 2026; they are Kobo-store prices, not Amazon prices, and can change.

| Model | Best for | Screen and storage | Buttons, stylus and protection | US Kobo price shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kobo Clara BW | Novels, long reading sessions, and the smallest monochrome reader | 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD; 1448 × 1072; 16 GB | No page-turn buttons; ComfortLight PRO; IPX8 waterproofing; monochrome display | $159.99 |
| Kobo Clara Colour | Readers who want color covers or illustrations without moving to a larger device | 6-inch Kaleido 3 color screen; 16 GB | No page-turn buttons; not compatible with Kobo Stylus | $179.99 |
| Kobo Libra Colour | Readers who want more page area, physical buttons, or handwritten notes | 7-inch Kaleido 3; 1264 × 1680; 32 GB; 300 PPI black-and-white and 150 PPI color | Physical page-turn buttons; IPX8 waterproofing; Kobo Stylus support; stylus sold separately | $259.99 |
Choose Clara BW when your library is mostly novels and you value a crisp monochrome page in a compact body. Choose Clara Colour when color is useful but portability still matters more than buttons. Choose Libra Colour when a larger page, one-handed button control, or annotation justifies the higher price and size.

Can a Kobo replace a Kindle library?
Not automatically. A Kobo is not a drop-in mirror of an Amazon account, and there is no established batch-transfer path that makes every Kindle purchase appear in Kobo. Whether one book moves successfully depends on the title’s file format, digital rights management (DRM), and the rights granted by the seller.
What Kobo can read
The Clara BW product information lists 15 supported formats, including EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, CBZ, and CBR. The color models support Kobo’s common ebook formats as well. That means a compatible, unprotected EPUB or PDF can generally be used on a Kobo; it does not mean that any file with an EPUB or PDF label is transferable.
Why DRM changes the answer
DRM is a permission layer attached to a file. Kobo’s support guidance says that DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files intended for a device made by another manufacturer require Adobe Digital Editions. Kobo also says non-protected EPUB and PDF files can be copied to a Kobo over USB. Those instructions describe supported file-handling routes; they do not establish that Amazon-purchased Kindle files can be moved through them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKindle purchases and Kindle Unlimited access can remain tied to Amazon’s ecosystem. Do not treat DRM removal as a normal setup step or assume it is lawful, available, or technically reliable. For each important book, verify that the publisher or retailer provides a legally usable file in a Kobo-compatible form. Keep your Kindle account or device for titles that remain there.
A practical title-by-title test
- Make a list of the Kindle books you would genuinely miss, rather than trying to audit every purchase.
- Check the book’s product page or the publisher’s support information for a downloadable EPUB or PDF and any device restrictions.
- Separate DRM-free files from files that require an authorized app or account. A file extension alone is not proof of compatibility.
- For a DRM-free EPUB or PDF, plan to copy it by USB after you have set up the Kobo.
- For an authorized Adobe DRM book, confirm that the seller’s instructions support Adobe Digital Editions and your Kobo model.
- Leave books with no legal compatible option on Kindle. Do not buy a Kobo until the titles that matter most have a clear path.
Library borrowing: the question to answer before switching
Direct library borrowing is one of Kobo’s strongest reasons to switch, but availability is local rather than universal. Current Kobo and OverDrive documentation lists Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Clara BW among newer models that support direct borrowing. Libby says to use the same library card on Kobo and in Libby.
Requirements
- A valid card from a library that offers ebooks through a supported service.
- An ebook that is actually in that library’s digital catalog and available for your account.
- A country and library system where the Kobo borrowing feature is offered.
- The same library-card credentials in Libby and on the Kobo when the workflow requires them.
Library catalogs differ by institution, licensing territory, and available copies. A title that appears in Libby may have a wait list, an expiration date, or a format restriction. Check your own library’s catalog and ask whether Kobo borrowing is supported before choosing a device primarily for loans.
How to validate your library
- Open Libby and sign in with your library card.
- Search for several books you would realistically borrow, including one recently released title and one backlist title.
- Confirm that the results can be read on an eligible Kobo rather than only inside a phone, tablet, or web app.
- Check whether your library belongs to a supported geographic service area and whether additional cards or partner-library rules apply.
- Only then decide whether the library feature is important enough to determine the model.
Kobo Clara BW: the text-first Kindle alternative
Clara BW is the focused choice for novels, essays, and other primarily black-and-white reading. Its 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD display has 1448 × 1072 resolution, and the 16 GB storage is aimed at a large text library rather than a media collection. The monochrome panel avoids the lower color-layer pixel density found on color E Ink readers, so it is the simplest recommendation when colored covers and illustrations are not priorities.
Why it suits a former Kindle owner
- The compact 6-inch form is easy to carry and familiar to readers who prefer a small dedicated device.
- ComfortLight PRO provides front-light controls for reading in changing light.
- IPX8 waterproofing makes it appropriate for reading near water when the device is used within Kobo’s stated protection limits.
- USB-C simplifies charging and file transfer compared with older ports.
- The listed format support covers EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, CBZ, and CBR in addition to other formats listed by Kobo.
Battery claim and its limits
Kobo quotes up to 53 days on a single charge for Clara BW. That is a manufacturer estimate based on 30 minutes of reading per day, the front light at 10%, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off. Real endurance changes with brightness, wireless use, audiobook or other supported activity, temperature, and how long you read each day.

When not to choose Clara BW
It is the wrong fit if color illustrations are central to your reading, if you require physical page-turn buttons, or if you want Kobo Stylus support. Those requirements point to Libra Colour, while a color reader in the same compact size points to Clara Colour.
Kobo Clara Colour: compact color without buttons
Clara Colour uses a 6-inch Kaleido 3 color display and 16 GB of storage. It is the middle option for readers who want color covers, highlighted diagrams, comics, or illustrated nonfiction while keeping the small Clara footprint.
What the color layer changes
Color E Ink is useful for distinguishing highlighted passages, maps, charts, and comic panels. It is not identical to a phone or tablet display, and color content has lower pixel density than a monochrome page on the same generation of technology. If nearly all of your reading is plain text, the color layer may add less value than Clara BW’s text-first design.

Important limitations
- Clara Colour does not support Kobo Stylus.
- It has no physical page-turn buttons, so page changes use the touchscreen.
- The screen remains 6 inches, so it does not provide Libra Colour’s extra page area.
Clara Colour makes sense when portability and color are both important and you are comfortable tapping the screen. It is not the choice for handwritten annotations or button-based one-handed reading.
Kobo Libra Colour: the feature-rich choice
Libra Colour is the model to buy when the reading interface matters as much as the display. Its 7-inch Kaleido 3 screen gives more page area than either Clara, and physical page-turn buttons allow you to change pages without swiping. It has 32 GB of storage, IPX8 waterproofing, and supports Kobo Stylus annotation.
Understanding its resolution
Kobo lists 300 PPI for black-and-white content and 150 PPI for color content. The 300-PPI figure describes monochrome text rendering; it should not be used to imply that color pages have the same density. Expect color material to look less finely detailed than black-and-white text, especially in small lettering or intricate illustrations.
Stylus expectations
The Kobo Stylus is an optional accessory, not an item included with Libra Colour. Confirm the exact stylus generation and compatibility at purchase because accessory availability can change. If you never annotate, the stylus should not by itself justify the price difference; the buttons and larger screen may be the more relevant reasons to choose Libra Colour.
Battery claim and its limits
Kobo quotes up to 40 days for Libra Colour, based on 30 minutes of reading per day, the front light at 30%, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off. This is a controlled manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every owner. Wireless syncing, higher light levels, frequent note-taking, and longer sessions reduce the interval between charges.

How to choose by reading habit
Choose monochrome when text is the priority
For novels and most long-form prose, Clara BW keeps the decision simple: a compact screen, monochrome text, front-light adjustment, waterproofing, and the lowest listed price among the three. Color is valuable only when your material benefits from it.
Choose color when visual information matters
Clara Colour is the compact color answer. Libra Colour is better when that visual material also benefits from more page area or when you want to write on the page. Neither should be sold as a substitute for a high-resolution tablet for demanding full-color design work.
Choose buttons when touch navigation is a nuisance
Only Libra Colour in this shortlist has physical page-turn buttons. This can help when holding the reader one-handed, wearing gloves, or avoiding repeated screen taps. If buttons are non-negotiable, the choice is already made regardless of whether your books are monochrome or color.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose storage for your actual files
Clara models provide 16 GB; Libra Colour provides 32 GB. Kobo’s store may translate capacity into approximate library counts, but those counts are manufacturer estimates rather than guaranteed user capacity. Large PDFs, comic archives, and illustrated books consume more space than ordinary text ebooks, so use the storage difference as a planning guide rather than a promise of a precise number of books.
Moving your own compatible files to Kobo
The simplest transfer is for a DRM-free EPUB or PDF that you own and are allowed to copy.
- Charge the Kobo and complete its initial setup and account sign-in.
- Use a data-capable USB-C cable to connect it to a computer. A charge-only cable will not expose storage.
- Unlock or approve the connection on the Kobo if it asks whether to connect to the computer.
- On the computer, open the Kobo drive and copy the DRM-free EPUB or PDF into the device’s main storage area.
- Eject the Kobo safely from the computer before unplugging the cable.
- Open the Books or My Books area and allow the device to finish importing and indexing the files.
If the title is protected by Adobe DRM, follow the authorized seller’s Adobe Digital Editions process instead of copying the file as if it were unprotected. A file that copies successfully may still fail to open if its permissions are tied to another account.

Assuming every Kindle purchase will transfer
Symptom: You buy a Kobo and discover that important books are still available only through Kindle. Fix: perform the title-by-title check before purchasing and keep the Kindle app or device for books without a legal compatible file.
Confusing format support with DRM support
Symptom: A file is labeled EPUB or PDF but the Kobo refuses to open it. Fix: determine whether it is DRM-protected and use the authorized Adobe Digital Editions workflow when the seller supports it.

Choosing a Kobo for library use without checking the library
Symptom: Your library card works in Libby, but the expected borrow or sync option is unavailable on the device. Fix: ask the library whether its catalog and geography support direct Kobo borrowing and whether the specific model is eligible.
Expecting color E Ink to look like a tablet
Symptom: Color pages appear softer or less saturated than expected. Fix: choose color only when its organization and annotation benefits outweigh the lower color pixel density, and use a tablet when bright, detailed color is the primary requirement.
Assuming the stylus is included
Symptom: You order Libra Colour for handwriting but have no pen in the box. Fix: budget for a separately sold compatible Kobo Stylus and verify the accessory generation before checkout.
Treating advertised battery life as a schedule
Symptom: Your reader lasts fewer days than the headline figure. Fix: compare your brightness, wireless settings, session length, and use of color or annotation with Kobo’s test conditions. The published figures are “up to” estimates, not guaranteed durations.
Price, accessories, and ownership checks
The displayed US Kobo prices were $159.99 for Clara BW, $179.99 for Clara Colour, and $259.99 for Libra Colour. Recheck the current price in your country and currency because Kobo pricing, taxes, promotions, and stock can change. Do not compare those figures directly with an Amazon price without checking whether both are current, from the same region, and for the same configuration.
Libra Colour’s stylus is an additional purchase. Kobo’s comparison materials also describe model-specific sleep covers, but compatibility should be confirmed for the exact model before buying. A cover designed for one Clara generation or screen layout may not fit another reader.
A pre-purchase checklist for former Kindle owners
- Audit essential books: identify the Kindle titles you need and verify each one has a legal, compatible reading path.
- Test library access: use your own card in Libby, inspect the catalog, and confirm Kobo borrowing support with the institution.
- Pick the screen: monochrome for text-first reading, compact color for occasional visual material, or 7-inch color for page area and annotation.
- Decide on controls: select Libra Colour if physical page-turn buttons are required.
- Plan storage: 16 GB suits typical ebook collections; 32 GB gives more room for large PDFs, comics, and illustrated books.
- Price the complete setup: include the reader, any stylus, a compatible cover, and local taxes or delivery charges.
- Verify current specifications: check Kobo’s product page for the exact model, accessory generation, warranty terms, and regional availability immediately before ordering.
Bottom line for the Kindle-to-Kobo switch
Kobo is a strong replacement when your reading is built around library loans, DRM-free or legitimately compatible EPUB/PDF files, and a store ecosystem you are ready to use independently. It is not a guaranteed migration of an Amazon Kindle library. Clara BW is the safest recommendation for compact, text-heavy reading; Clara Colour adds color without adding size; and Libra Colour is the best fit for a larger page, buttons, and optional handwriting. Make the library and title-rights checks first, then choose the hardware that matches how you actually read.
