For most readers leaving Kindle, start with Kobo: choose the Clara BW for compact black-and-white reading, the Clara Colour for a small color screen, or the Libra Colour for a larger display, page-turn buttons, and optional handwriting. Choose the BOOX Go 6 (Gen II) instead if running Kindle, Libby, and other Android apps on the reader matters more than a simpler, dedicated reading interface.

Kobo prices are US catalog listings, not global prices, and can change. WIRED reported that Kobo raised the Libra Colour price by $30 to $260 in May 2026; its $259.99 catalog listing was captured later, on October 7, 2026. Check your local store for current price and availability. WIRED’s 2026 e-reader guide and Kobo’s US catalog provide the cited recommendations, specifications, and listings.
Why Kobo is the easiest place to start
Kobo is the closest fit for someone who wants a dedicated e-reader rather than a general-purpose tablet: the three Clara and Libra choices cover compact monochrome, compact color, and a larger color screen. NBC Select names the Clara BW its best overall Kindle alternative and notes its compact design, waterproofing, and library access through Libby/OverDrive. WIRED highlights the Libra Colour as its best e-reader in its October 2026 guide and the Clara Colour as a budget choice. These are those publications’ judgments, not tests conducted by iTechGuides.

Choose Clara BW for uncomplicated black-and-white reading
The Clara BW’s 6-inch screen and 16 GB storage make it the small, monochrome choice in this group. NBC Select lists a weight of 174 g and a battery estimate of up to 53 days. It is a sensible fit if color is unnecessary and portability matters more than a larger screen. The US catalog listing captured October 7, 2026 was $159.99.

Choose Clara Colour for color in a compact reader
The Clara Colour keeps the 6-inch form factor while adding a color display. WIRED lists 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color, plus 16 GB storage, 6-ounce weight, IPX8 waterproofing, and up to 42 days of battery life. Its US catalog listing captured October 7, 2026 was $179.99.
Choose Libra Colour for a larger screen and buttons
The Libra Colour’s 7-inch display gives more room for pages, comics, and illustrated material. It has physical page-turn buttons and supports the optional Kobo Stylus 2 for annotation; those features do not apply to every Kobo model. WIRED lists 32 GB storage, 7.03-ounce weight, IPX8 waterproofing, and up to 40 days of battery life. Its display is 300 ppi in black and white and 150 ppi in color. The US catalog listing captured October 7, 2026 was $259.99.

When BOOX makes more sense than Kobo
The BOOX Go 6 (Gen II) is the distinct choice if you want to install reading apps rather than rely mainly on one e-reader ecosystem. WIRED says it runs Android 11 and supports Google Play apps, including Kindle and Libby. Its listed specifications are a 6-inch, 300-ppi screen, 32 GB storage, 5.6-ounce weight, and USB-C charging. WIRED lists it as not waterproof and does not state a battery-life estimate.
That app access offers flexibility, but it also means a more app-centered experience than a dedicated Kobo reader. Books from third-party platforms may need to be opened in their respective apps. BOOX is therefore useful when keeping access to Kindle or using several services on one device is a priority; it is not automatically the simpler choice for someone who just wants to read purchased ebooks.

Check books and library access before switching
A new e-reader does not automatically make Kindle purchases portable. A Kindle book does not become a DRM-free file simply because you buy a different device. Before choosing, check whether your library supports the device or app you plan to use, whether the books you own can be transferred, and what DRM restrictions apply.
Kobo readers offer Kobo’s bookstore and supported library borrowing, while Android on the BOOX Go 6 (Gen II) allows compatible apps such as Kindle and Libby. Library availability and borrowing methods can depend on location, service, and device support; verify your local library’s instructions rather than assuming the same setup works everywhere. NBC Select identifies Libby/OverDrive access as a benefit of the Clara BW. See NBC Select’s 2026 Kindle-alternatives guide for its device recommendations and library discussion.

How to choose between monochrome and color
Color is useful for book covers, colored highlights, comics, and illustrated books, but it is a trade-off rather than a universal upgrade. WIRED lists the Clara Colour and Libra Colour at 150 ppi for color and 300 ppi for black-and-white display. If most of your reading is text, the monochrome Clara BW avoids paying for color you may rarely use. If color content is part of your regular reading, the Clara Colour provides it in a compact size, while the Libra Colour pairs it with a larger screen.

Consider size, controls, and durability together
- For commuting or one-handed portability: the 6-inch Clara models are smaller than the 7-inch Libra Colour.
- For page-turn buttons: the Libra Colour is the model in this comparison specifically described with physical buttons.
- For handwriting: the Libra Colour works with the optional Stylus 2; check compatibility before buying an accessory.
- For water resistance: WIRED lists IPX8 waterproofing for the Clara Colour and Libra Colour, and NBC Select describes the Clara BW as waterproof. Confirm the exact model and regional specifications before purchase.
- For apps: the BOOX Go 6 (Gen II) offers Android app access, but WIRED lists it as not waterproof.
Other color readers worth checking
PocketBook’s catalog lists the Verse Pro Color and Era Color. They are additional options if you want to compare beyond Kobo, but the available model-specific editorial detail here is thinner than for the Kobo and BOOX devices above. TechRadar’s 2026 guide also discusses alternatives beyond Kobo, while emphasizing Kobo and BOOX as main alternatives. Check exact specifications, library support, and local availability for the particular PocketBook model before deciding.
TechRadar’s Kindle-alternatives guide (August 22, 2026) and PocketBook’s product catalog are starting points for that comparison.
