For most readers, the best starting point is the Kobo Clara BW: a compact, black-and-white e-reader built around EPUB-oriented reading rather than dependence on Amazon’s store. It is not the right choice for everyone. Choose the BOOX Go Color 7 if Android apps and broad format support matter more than a focused reading appliance; consider the PocketBook Verse Pro if its newly documented Libby workflow works with your library; and choose the Kobo Libra Colour when you want color and a larger format.
“Fewer Amazon features” can mean several different things. You might want to buy books outside Amazon, load DRM-free EPUB files, borrow library titles, or run reading apps from different services. Those goals lead to different devices. No evidence establishes that any of these alternatives is automatically more private than a Kindle, so privacy should not be assumed from the absence of Amazon branding.
Start with your book source
The device that fits best depends less on a logo than on where your books come from. Before comparing screens, identify your main source:
- A manufacturer’s bookstore: Kobo gives you a dedicated store and a reading system centered on Kobo purchases.
- DRM-free EPUB files: Kobo’s support library provides model-specific EPUB documentation, making EPUB an important part of its use case. Start with the Kobo support documents for the exact model.
- Public-library loans: Kobo’s built-in OverDrive/Libby support is restricted by country, device model and the titles offered by your library. Confirm all three before buying.
- Several reading apps: BOOX Go Color 7 runs Android 12 and supports third-party apps, so it is the most flexible option in this group.
- Amazon purchases already in your account: An alternative device does not automatically make Amazon ebook purchases transferable. Check the title’s format and DRM rights before assuming it can be moved.
A reader discussion asks whether a Kindle alternative can accept an EPUB sent by email. That wording, illustrated in a reader question on Reddit, combines three separate needs: avoiding the Amazon store, avoiding Amazon services, and having a convenient way to move files. The models below address the first two in different ways, but you should verify the exact file-transfer method in the manufacturer’s current documentation if email delivery is essential.

Kobo Clara BW: the default compact alternative
The Clara BW is the most straightforward recommendation when your priority is a small, distraction-light reader that works naturally with EPUB-oriented collections. It is a black-and-white device, so it suits novels, essays and other text-first books better than comics or illustrated textbooks that benefit from color.
Why it is the sensible starting point
- Focused experience: It is positioned as a dedicated e-reader rather than a general Android tablet, which keeps the choice centered on reading.
- EPUB documentation: Kobo’s support portal has model-specific Clara BW material and EPUB-format guides. Use those instructions for the exact edition and firmware on your device.
- Non-Amazon purchasing: Books bought through Kobo’s ecosystem are separate from Amazon’s store, while compatible EPUB files give you another source.
- Compact format: Its appeal is portability and a traditional monochrome reading experience, not a large canvas for color content.
Where Clara BW needs checking
Do not assume that “Kobo” guarantees library borrowing in every country. Kobo says OverDrive/Libby availability is limited to named countries and devices, and that local libraries decide which titles are offered. Check Kobo’s current country guidance at its OverDrive availability page, then confirm that your exact Clara BW model and library catalogue qualify.

Also check the rights on your existing books. An EPUB file may be DRM-free or protected by a particular lending or bookstore system. The extension alone does not prove that every reader can open it.

Kobo Libra Colour: choose color, not just a different ecosystem
The Libra Colour is the Kobo choice for readers who want a larger device and a color display. Color can make covers, diagrams, comics and highlighted notes more useful, but it is not automatically an upgrade for a person who reads only black-and-white novels.
When the larger color format helps
- Illustrated nonfiction and cookbooks are easier to scan when color information matters.
- Comics and graphic material can benefit from color reproduction compared with a monochrome panel.
- Readers who annotate or organize books visually may prefer a larger, more expressive page.
Trade-offs to consider
A color screen changes the reason to buy the device: you are paying for a different reading surface, not merely escaping Amazon. Verify current availability, regional pricing and your library’s compatibility before ordering. Kobo’s model support documents and library guidance should be checked together, because a device can be available in your market while a particular borrowing service is not.
PocketBook Verse Pro: a library workflow that depends on firmware
PocketBook’s Verse Pro deserves attention because its official firmware notes provide unusually specific information about Libby integration. Release notes for firmware 6.10.3425, dated March 24, 2026, say the update added a PocketBook-Libby app, library search and borrowing, offline reading of borrowed ebooks in the built-in reader, and online audiobook listening. - Check the firmware version installed on the Verse Pro you are considering.
- Confirm that the update is offered for your regional model; release notes do not guarantee identical rollout timing in every market.
- Ask your library which service and authentication method it uses.
- Test whether your library appears in the device’s Libby search before relying on the reader for borrowing.
- After borrowing a title, verify that offline reading works for the loan period and that audiobook features match your expectations.
This is a documented workflow, not a promise that every library will work. Library membership, geographic licensing and catalogue selection still control what you can borrow. If your library is not compatible, the Verse Pro’s Libby feature does not solve that limitation.

BOOX Go Color 7: the app-oriented option
The BOOX Go Color 7 is the clearest fit when “alternative” means access to more than one reading service. Its official product page lists Android 12, third-party app support, EPUB and AZW3 compatibility, a 7-inch Kaleido 3 display and physical page-turn buttons. Why Android changes the decision
- More app choice: You can use compatible third-party reading applications instead of being limited to one bookstore’s software.
- Broader file support: EPUB and AZW3 are explicitly listed, which is useful for mixed libraries, although DRM rules still apply.
- Color plus controls: The 7-inch Kaleido 3 panel adds color, while page-turn buttons preserve a tactile way to advance pages.
Why it is not automatically better
Android flexibility introduces more decisions: app compatibility, account setup, updates and the behavior of each reading service. A focused reader such as the Clara BW may feel simpler if you want one primary library and minimal software management. Choose Go Color 7 because you need third-party apps, not because a longer specification list is always preferable.
Library borrowing: verify three separate conditions
Library support is the easiest area to misunderstand. Kobo’s guidance explains that built-in OverDrive/Libby access is available only for named countries and devices, and that each library controls its own collection. Treat borrowing as a three-part check:

Your country must be included in Kobo’s supported geography. A feature available in one market may not be enabled in another.

2. Device
The exact model must be on the supported-device list. Do not infer compatibility from the brand name or from another Kobo model.
3. Catalogue
Your local library must participate and carry the titles you want. Even when the service is available, selection and licensing vary by library.
Apply the same discipline to PocketBook: the Verse Pro’s March 2026 firmware documents the app and borrowing functions, but your library and the firmware installed on your particular unit remain decisive.

There is no single universal “send EPUB by email” workflow across these devices. Before buying, separate the file itself from the transfer method:

- Identify the file: Confirm whether it is EPUB, AZW3 or another format, and whether it has DRM.
- Identify the destination: Decide whether you want a dedicated Kobo or PocketBook library, an Android app on BOOX, or a library-loan application.
- Read the model guide: Use the manufacturer’s current support page for the exact model and firmware. Kobo’s support portal explicitly provides EPUB documentation for Clara BW and Libra Colour.
- Test one representative book: Use a DRM-free EPUB, a protected purchase and a library loan only if you legally have access to each. This reveals compatibility before you migrate an entire collection.
- Keep an original backup: Store your legally acquired files separately from the device so a failed transfer or reset does not destroy your only copy.
If email-based delivery is a non-negotiable requirement, ask the manufacturer or retailer for the current supported method before purchase. The available documentation here establishes EPUB support and app workflows, but it does not establish a universal email-ingest feature for these alternatives.
DRM, store accounts and what “Amazon-free” really removes
Leaving Amazon’s store does not remove digital-rights restrictions from books you already own. A purchased ebook may be locked to a seller’s application or account, while a DRM-free EPUB is usually more portable. Library loans have their own authorization and expiry rules. Treat each category separately:
- DRM-free files: Usually the simplest starting point for a non-Amazon device, subject to the model’s documented formats.
- Store DRM: Check whether the seller provides a compatible app, export path or supported device before assuming migration is possible.
- Library DRM or loan controls: Follow the library service’s sign-in and loan rules; offline access can end when the loan expires.
- Android apps: BOOX can host compatible third-party apps, but an app’s own account and DRM requirements still apply.
Privacy: do not infer more than the evidence shows
A reader may use “fewer Amazon features” as shorthand for fewer Amazon accounts, recommendations or store integrations. That is a valid preference, but it is not proof of stronger privacy. A meaningful privacy comparison would require current vendor policies, telemetry details and observed device behavior. Those comparisons are not established here.
Choose based on the services you want to avoid and the workflow you want to keep. If privacy is your primary requirement, read the current policy for the exact device, companion app and bookstore you plan to use rather than relying on the brand category.
