If you want a straightforward black-and-white reading device, start with the Kobo Clara BW. It combines a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD display, 16 GB of storage, adjustable warm lighting and waterproofing. Choose the Kobo Clara Colour or Libra Colour when color matters; choose a BOOX model when Android apps, sideloaded documents or multiple reading services matter more than a simple, distraction-free reader.

Your country’s ebook stores, library lending, DRM rules and the exact model’s current specifications can change the answer. Treat the prices below as captured US storefront prices, not permanent worldwide prices, and verify local support before ordering.

Which Kindle alternative should you buy?

There is no single replacement that matches every Kindle use case. The best fit depends on whether you value a focused reading interface, color illustrations, physical page-turn buttons, handwriting, or the ability to install Android applications.

  • Focused monochrome reading: Kobo Clara BW.
  • Small color reader: Kobo Clara Colour.
  • Color, buttons and annotation: Kobo Libra Colour.
  • Android apps in a pocket-sized device: BOOX Palma 3.
  • Large color documents and handwriting: BOOX Note Air6 C.

These are use-case recommendations, not hands-on test rankings. The available specifications are manufacturer listings, and app behavior, lending access and pricing require model- and country-level verification.

Kobo’s catalog describes its readers as E Ink devices with built-in adjustable front lights, access to the Kobo Store, support for a range of ebook formats and weeks of battery life. That is a manufacturer description rather than an independent battery test. BOOX’s listings establish app support and format breadth, but they do not prove that every Android application is equally usable on an ePaper screen.

Why E Ink changes the choice

E Ink is reflective rather than a conventional backlit phone or tablet display. You read by reflected room light, with the front light used for darkness or low-light comfort. This makes an E Ink reader a different tool from a tablet even when both can open the same book.

Monochrome panels generally keep text and diagrams visually simple. Color E Ink can add useful color to comics, maps, covers, textbooks and highlighted notes, but color is a model-specific feature and should not be assumed across a product family. Screen size also changes the job: a 6-inch reader favors portability, a 7-inch model gives more room while remaining hand-held, and a 10.3-inch device is better suited to PDFs, diagrams and handwriting than to one-handed commuting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Front lighting, waterproofing, buttons and stylus support are separate decisions from the display technology. Compare each exact model instead of treating a brand name as a specification.

Kobo Clara BW: the simple monochrome alternative

The Clara BW is the clearest choice for someone replacing a basic Kindle-style reading experience without adding apps or a large writing surface. Kobo lists a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD screen, 16 GB of storage, adjustable ComfortLight PRO and waterproofing. Its captured US catalog price was $159.99.

What the hardware suits

  • The 6-inch size is compact for a coat pocket or small bag.
  • Monochrome E Ink keeps novels and ordinary nonfiction focused on text.
  • ComfortLight PRO provides adjustable front lighting, including warmer light settings listed by Kobo.
  • Waterproofing is listed by Kobo, useful around a pool, bath or rainy commute; follow the model’s exact safety instructions rather than assuming unlimited submersion.
  • Sixteen gigabytes provides local storage for a substantial ebook library, although the space available to books is less than the headline capacity after system software.

Checks before purchase

Confirm that the Kobo Store serves your country and that the books you intend to buy use a DRM format the device accepts. Library borrowing is not identical worldwide; availability depends on the local library service, account rules and the particular ebook. Also recheck the live US or local price because the captured $159.99 figure can change.

Kobo’s color readers: Clara Colour or Libra Colour

Kobo Clara Colour

The Clara Colour keeps the compact 6-inch form factor but uses a color E Ink Kaleido 3 display. Kobo lists 16 GB of storage, adjustable ComfortLight PRO and waterproofing. The US catalog showed $179.99 when captured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a sensible step up when color covers, comics, charts or highlighted passages matter but you still want a small reader. The difference from Clara BW is not merely cosmetic: color E Ink changes the display characteristics and the way illustrations appear. Verify the exact screen behavior and supported features in the current regional listing.

Kobo Libra Colour

The Libra Colour expands the color panel to 7 inches and adds physical page-turn buttons. Kobo lists a color E Ink Kaleido 3 display, 32 GB of storage, ComfortLight PRO and Kobo Stylus compatibility. Its captured US catalog price was $259.99.

Buttons are valuable if you read one-handed, wear gloves or prefer not to tap the screen to turn pages. The larger body gives diagrams and comics more space, while the stylus option makes the Libra Colour more appropriate for handwritten notes than the Clara models. The trade-off is a higher price and a larger device; measure your preferred bag or reading grip before choosing it.

Choosing between the two

Question Choose Clara Colour when… Choose Libra Colour when…
Portability You want the smaller 6-inch reader. You accept a larger 7-inch body for more page area.
Controls Touch interaction is sufficient. You want dedicated page-turn buttons.
Storage 16 GB meets your library needs. You want the listed 32 GB capacity.
Writing You mainly read and do not need the Libra stylus option. You want Kobo Stylus compatibility for annotation.
Captured US price $179.99 when Kobo’s catalog was captured. $259.99 when Kobo’s catalog was captured.

BOOX: when Android flexibility matters

BOOX is the strongest fit in this comparison for readers who need more than one store or reading application. The official listings for the Palma 3 and Note Air6 C specify Android 16, third-party app support and broad document-format support. That means you can investigate applications and file workflows beyond a single integrated bookstore, but it does not guarantee that every app will be comfortable or fully functional on ePaper.

BOOX Palma 3

The Palma 3 is a 6.13-inch monochrome ePaper device with 128 GB of storage. BOOX lists Android 16, volume/page-turn buttons, third-party app support and broad document-format support. Its phone-like shape is easy to carry and the buttons can help with page navigation, but the compact width is less suitable for large PDFs or fixed-layout textbooks.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose the Palma 3 if you already know which Android applications you need, such as a particular subscription service, cloud library or document reader. Before buying, check that the app supports the device’s Android version, that sign-in works without Google-specific dependencies if relevant, and that the app’s scrolling, animation and refresh behavior is acceptable on ePaper.

BOOX Note Air6 C

The Note Air6 C is a 10.3-inch color ePaper writing tablet. BOOX lists 64 GB of storage, Android 16, stylus support, third-party app support and broad document-format support.

Its large color canvas is aimed at PDFs, academic papers, sheet music, diagrams and annotation rather than pocket reading. The size gives documents room to breathe and makes handwriting more practical, but it is heavier and less discreet than a 6-inch reader. The captured listing did not establish a price or availability, so confirm both in your country before budgeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Android does and does not solve

  • It can broaden access: multiple stores, subscription services and document applications may be installed instead of relying on one bookstore.
  • It adds setup work: each app has its own account, DRM rules, downloads and update behavior.
  • It does not turn ePaper into a tablet screen: fast animation, video and complex scrolling may feel less natural than on an LCD or OLED device.
  • It creates support questions: verify the current Android version, app compatibility and vendor update policy for the exact model.

Where PocketBook fits

PocketBook has an official catalog of E Ink devices and belongs on a broad Kindle-alternatives shortlist. The available catalog information does not establish enough model-level detail to endorse one PocketBook reader over another here. If you are considering the brand, compare a specific model’s screen, lighting, waterproofing, supported formats, DRM, library integration, storage and local price against the Kobo and BOOX options above.

Do not assume that a feature listed for one PocketBook model applies to the entire catalog. Check the regional store, the exact firmware and the lending services available in your country.

The buying framework that prevents expensive mistakes

1. Start with content access

List the books and documents you actually use: purchases from a particular store, library loans, PDFs, EPUB files, comics, technical manuals or subscriptions. A reader that has the perfect screen but cannot open your DRM-protected books is the wrong device. Confirm the country-specific store, account region and lending pathway before comparing cosmetic features.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

2. Decide monochrome versus color

Choose monochrome when most pages are text and you want the simplest visual presentation. Choose color when illustrations, maps, comics, covers or color markup are central to your reading. Compare the exact panel and front-light implementation; color is not a universal property of every model in a lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Pick the smallest screen that fits your documents

  • About 6 inches: easiest to carry and well suited to novels.
  • About 7 inches: more comfortable for illustrated books while retaining a hand-held shape.
  • About 10.3 inches: better for PDFs, two-column pages and handwriting, but a larger writing tablet rather than a pocket reader.

4. Decide how you turn pages

Touch-only readers keep the body compact. Physical buttons are useful for one-handed reading and reduce the need to tap the display. The Libra Colour and Palma 3 list page-turn controls; the Clara models’ listed specifications emphasize touch and lighting rather than dedicated page-turn buttons.

5. Treat annotation as a separate workflow

If you only highlight passages, a compact reader may be enough. If you write marginal notes or mark up documents, stylus compatibility and screen size become decisive. Kobo lists Stylus compatibility for the Libra Colour; BOOX lists stylus support for the Note Air6 C. Confirm where notes are stored and how they can be exported before relying on them for school or work.

6. Verify durability and price locally

Waterproofing is listed for the Clara BW, Clara Colour and Libra Colour. The supplied BOOX specifications do not establish waterproofing for the Palma 3 or Note Air6 C, so do not infer it. Prices of $159.99, $179.99 and $259.99 are captured US catalog figures for the Kobo models and may change; BOOX prices were not established in the captured listings.

Formats, DRM and library lending

“Supports EPUB” is not the same as “opens every EPUB you own.” DRM, account authorization and the way a library distributes a loan can determine whether a file opens. Before switching, make a short inventory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which stores hold your purchased books?
  • Are your files DRM-free or tied to an account or application?
  • Does your library use a service supported in your country and on your chosen model?
  • Do you read fixed-layout PDFs, comics or scanned documents that need a larger screen?
  • Do you need cloud synchronization, annotations or notes to move between devices?

Kobo advertises access to its own store and support for a range of ebook formats. BOOX advertises third-party apps and broad document-format support on the two listed models. Those statements describe capability, not guaranteed access to every publisher, library or subscription service. Test one representative book or document before migrating a large library.

A practical migration plan

  1. Record your library: write down the store, library service, file type and DRM status for the books you read most.
  2. Confirm regional support: visit the manufacturer’s site for your country, check the account region and verify current model availability.
  3. Choose the form factor: compare 6-inch, 7-inch and 10.3-inch screens against your normal reading position and document types.
  4. Check controls and lighting: decide whether buttons, warm front lighting, waterproofing or a stylus are essential rather than optional.
  5. Validate app needs: on a BOOX device, check each required Android app’s compatibility and how it handles ePaper refresh and downloads.
  6. Buy one representative test title: open a typical purchased ebook, a library loan if applicable and a difficult PDF before transferring everything.
  7. Keep the original device during the return period: this gives you a recovery path if a store, DRM system or library workflow does not transfer as expected.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Assuming a brand guarantees every feature

A manufacturer’s lineup can include compact readers, color models and large writing tablets. Use the exact model name when checking screen technology, storage, buttons, waterproofing and stylus support.

Buying by price alone

A lower price can hide a screen that is too small for your PDFs, missing buttons you rely on or an ecosystem that cannot open your library loans. Compare access and workflow before the sticker price.

Expecting every Android app to behave like it does on a phone

BOOX’s Android 16 and third-party app support make the devices flexible, not universally equivalent to a smartphone. Disable unnecessary animation where an app permits it, use a reading view when available and confirm that downloads and sign-in work on the exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming color is always better

Color is valuable for illustrated content, but a text-first reader may prefer the simpler monochrome presentation and lower captured price of the Clara BW. Choose based on the pages you read, not the feature list alone.

Taking a captured price as a guarantee

The Kobo prices in this guide were listed on a US catalog when captured. Storefront currency, taxes, promotions, availability and regional models can change. Check the live local listing immediately before purchase.

How to make the final decision

Pick the Clara BW when your priority is uncomplicated, waterproof, monochrome reading in a small body. Move to the Clara Colour when you want that compact shape with color. Choose the Libra Colour when buttons, a larger color screen and stylus compatibility justify its higher captured US price. Choose the Palma 3 when installing Android reading applications and carrying a phone-shaped device are central to your workflow. Choose the Note Air6 C when large color pages and handwriting matter more than pocketability. Investigate PocketBook by exact model if its regional store or lending support fills a gap that these options do not.

Whichever route you take, verify the store, DRM, library access, current software, local price and model-specific durability claims before moving your entire library.
