The most dependable starting point for Samsung DeX is a Bluetooth keyboard-and-mouse combo, provided your Galaxy device and display support the DeX mode you plan to use. DeX also accepts wired USB peripherals and wireless USB receivers, so the best setup depends on available ports, portability, layout, battery preferences, and whether you connect directly to a monitor, through a dock, or wirelessly to a compatible display.
What works with Samsung DeX?
Samsung documents three practical ways to connect a keyboard or mouse to DeX: Bluetooth, wired USB, and wireless USB peripherals that use a receiver. In Samsung’s own wording, “You can use a wired or wireless USB keyboard and mouse, or pair a keyboard and mouse using Bluetooth.” That makes the category broad: there is no single DeX-certified keyboard-and-mouse model that every user needs.
A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo is usually the simplest choice when you want a clean desk and do not want to occupy a USB port with a receiver. A USB setup can be preferable when you already have a dock, monitor hub, DeX Pad, or DeX Station with accessible ports. Wired devices avoid battery charging altogether, but they add cables and can be awkward with a phone or tablet positioned away from the screen.
Compatibility is determined by the complete setup rather than by the input devices alone. Check the Galaxy model, the way DeX is launched, the display connection, available USB ports, and the operating behavior of the apps you intend to use.

Samsung’s DeX documentation covers Bluetooth, USB, and RF peripheral types. It also identifies desktop-oriented functions such as keyboard shortcuts, a mouse pointer, drag-and-drop, and Alt+Tab window switching. Those features make a conventional keyboard and mouse more useful than touch input when DeX is being used as a desktop interface.
When a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo is the right choice
For a cable-free desk
Bluetooth is the most direct option when the phone or tablet is already connected to a monitor and you want the keyboard and mouse on the desk in front of you. There is no receiver to plug into a USB-C port, so the same port can remain available for charging or a display adapter.
For travel and temporary workspaces
A compact keyboard and small mouse fit more easily in a bag than full-size wired peripherals. Bluetooth also avoids carrying a USB-C OTG adapter solely for input. Before buying, confirm that both devices can be paired independently and that the keyboard’s layout is suitable for the language and shortcuts you use.
For devices with limited ports
Some phones and tablets have one USB-C port. If that port is occupied by a display adapter, a Bluetooth pair avoids the need for a USB hub. If you use a dock or monitor hub, a receiver-based setup may be equally convenient, but verify that the hub actually passes USB input to DeX.
What to check in a combo listing
- Bluetooth support for both the keyboard and the mouse, rather than Bluetooth on only one device.
- The keyboard layout, language, key spacing, and presence of a number pad.
- Mouse dimensions, grip shape, sensor behavior on your desk surface, and whether left-handed use is supported.
- Charging method or battery type, and whether the keyboard and mouse can be used while charging.
- Whether the product also includes a USB receiver. A receiver can be useful as a fallback, but it may require an adapter in a USB-C-only setup.
- Multi-device switching if you intend to move between DeX and a computer or tablet.
How to pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with DeX
Pairing happens in the Galaxy phone or tablet’s Bluetooth settings. DeX does not require a special pairing screen for ordinary Bluetooth input devices.
- Turn on the keyboard or mouse and charge it or install its batteries.
- Put the device into pairing mode. The exact button or key combination is manufacturer-specific; use the accessory’s instructions if the device does not appear.
- On the Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings, then Connections, then Bluetooth. Samsung’s current menu wording can vary slightly by One UI version.
- Wait for the keyboard or mouse to appear under available devices, then select it.
- For a keyboard, enter the displayed pairing code on the keyboard and press Enter when prompted.
- Repeat the process for the mouse if it is a separate Bluetooth device.
- Launch or return to Samsung DeX and test typing, pointer movement, clicking, scrolling, and keyboard shortcuts.
If you are pairing a combo that advertises one Bluetooth connection for both devices, follow that product’s instructions instead of assuming the keyboard and mouse will appear as a single entry. A device that is still connected to another computer may not enter pairing mode until its connection is released or a different channel is selected.

Using a USB keyboard, mouse, or receiver
USB-C Galaxy devices
Many USB keyboards, mice, and wireless receivers use USB-A. A USB-C Galaxy phone or tablet therefore needs a USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter, a USB-C hub, or a dock with an appropriate port. Samsung specifically notes the OTG-adapter requirement for connecting USB accessories to compatible devices.

A dock can simplify a wired or receiver-based setup because it provides USB ports alongside display connectivity. Plug the keyboard, mouse, or receiver into the dock, connect the Galaxy device, and then test input after DeX starts. Port availability and behavior vary by dock and monitor, so do not assume that a port used for charging or service data will accept a peripheral.
One receiver versus two
Some wireless sets use one receiver for both keyboard and mouse; others supply separate receivers or rely on Bluetooth. A single receiver saves a port, but it is useful only if both devices are designed to communicate through it. Check the product documentation before buying an extra keyboard or mouse to combine with an existing receiver.
Wired reliability
Wired input is a sensible fallback when Bluetooth pairing is unreliable, the accessories have depleted batteries, or the Galaxy device is being configured for the first time. Keep the adapter or dock accessible so you can reconnect input without having to operate DeX entirely through touch.
Display compatibility matters as much as peripheral compatibility
Keyboard and mouse support does not guarantee that every DeX display arrangement will work. Samsung’s wireless DeX guidance for the US lists Samsung TVs from 2018 onward, Samsung Smart Monitors, and other Miracast-capable devices as compatible display targets, subject to the supported Galaxy phone and tablet list. Samsung also identifies model-specific exceptions, including some FE devices and differences among older and newer device families.

For a wireless display setup, verify the exact Galaxy model and receiving display against Samsung’s current support information. A monitor may support wireless casting but not the particular DeX mode available on your device. If wireless DeX is unavailable, a wired display connection through a compatible adapter or dock may be the alternative, but the adapter must support the display output required by that Galaxy model.

- Phone or tablet: confirm that the model supports the DeX mode you want to use.
- Display: check wired or Miracast compatibility, depending on how you plan to connect.
- Input path: decide whether Bluetooth, a receiver, or wired USB has a usable connection at the same time as the display.
- Power: determine how the Galaxy device will charge if its only USB-C port is occupied.
Keyboard features that make DeX more productive
Layout and size
Full-size keyboards provide a number pad and generous spacing, which is useful for spreadsheets and long data-entry sessions. Compact and tenkeyless keyboards free desk space and are easier to transport. A smaller layout may omit dedicated navigation keys or move functions behind an Fn layer, so compare the physical key arrangement with the shortcuts you use.
Shortcut behavior
DeX supports keyboard shortcuts, and Samsung’s developer documentation lists Alt+Tab window switching among its desktop interaction features. Look for a keyboard with clearly accessible modifier keys, reliable Fn behavior, and a layout that makes common combinations comfortable. The presence of a Windows or Command legend does not guarantee that every shortcut will behave identically to a desktop operating system; test the combinations important to your workflow.
Backlighting and battery use
Backlighting helps in dim rooms but consumes more power. Treat any battery estimate as conditional on brightness, connection mode, charging habits, and usage. A keyboard with a backlight-off mode can provide substantially longer runtime when illumination is unnecessary.
Charging and low-battery behavior
USB-C charging is convenient if your other devices use the same cable. Replaceable batteries can be useful for a travel kit because a spare set restores operation immediately. Check whether the keyboard can continue transmitting while connected to a charger and whether its status indicator gives enough warning before shutdown.
Mouse features that matter in DeX
Shape and pointing control
DeX turns the mouse into the primary pointer for windows, menus, drag-and-drop operations, and scrolling. A comfortable shape matters more than a long feature list if you use DeX for hours. Compact travel mice save space but can feel cramped; larger contoured mice may be better for a permanent desk.
Buttons and scrolling
A clickable scroll wheel and two main buttons cover ordinary DeX navigation. Additional buttons can be useful in computer applications, but Android and DeX apps may not assign every button consistently. Treat programmable controls as a convenience rather than a guaranteed system feature.

Surface and portability
Optical and laser sensors can behave differently on glass, glossy desks, or patterned surfaces. If you travel, choose a mouse that tracks reliably without a large pad, or carry a thin pad with the keyboard. A receiver compartment is useful only if the mouse actually uses a receiver; Bluetooth-only models may have no storage bay.

Battery figures are manufacturer estimates, not DeX endurance tests. One documented example is Logitech’s MX Keys for Business: the manufacturer lists up to 10 days on a full charge with predefined settings or up to five months with backlighting turned off. Logitech also states that battery life varies with usage and computing conditions.

Do not apply the MX Keys for Business figures to every keyboard, and do not treat them as proof of DeX compatibility. The specification is an example of how to read a manufacturer’s conditions, not a comparative test result.
Which setup fits common DeX scenarios?

These are selection patterns, not rankings. Samsung’s documentation supports the connection categories, but it does not certify every product or combination of dock, receiver, phone, tablet, and display.

The accessory is not actually paired
Open Bluetooth settings and confirm that the device shows as connected. If it is listed but unresponsive, turn it off and on, remove the pairing, and pair it again while it is in discovery mode. Check whether it is connected to another nearby computer or tablet.

Confirm that the receiver is fully inserted into the adapter, hub, dock, or monitor port. Try a different USB port and remove unnecessary hubs. On a USB-C phone or tablet, verify that the adapter supports OTG rather than only charging.

The device has no power
Charge a rechargeable accessory or replace its batteries. Backlighting, high-use sessions, and a mouse that never enters sleep can reduce runtime. If the accessory supports operation while charging, connect it directly and test again.
The display connection changed
After switching between wireless and wired DeX, disconnect and reconnect the input devices if necessary. A display adapter or dock can change which USB ports are active, and a wireless display may not support the same accessory path as a dock.
The app blocks input or window features
Samsung says that apps can explicitly disable mouse and keyboard input. It also notes that apps without multi-window support may display a DeX compatibility warning. If the pointer and keyboard work in the DeX home screen or another application but not in one app, the limitation may be app-level rather than a faulty peripheral.

DeX itself is not available on the model or display
Verify the exact Galaxy model and display method against Samsung’s current compatibility information. Older developer documentation contains legacy device and software examples; use current Samsung support guidance when deciding whether a present-day phone, tablet, TV, or monitor supports the mode you want.
A purchase checklist
- Identify the DeX route: wired display, wireless display, dock, DeX Pad, DeX Station, or monitor hub.
- Count available ports: reserve space for display, charging, storage, and input before choosing a receiver or wired accessories.
- Choose Bluetooth, USB receiver, or wired USB: base the decision on the actual ports and your tolerance for pairing and cables.
- Select the keyboard format: full-size for a number pad, compact or tenkeyless for travel and desk space.
- Check the mouse: confirm comfort, size, handedness, scrolling, and the intended connection method.
- Read battery conditions: note whether estimates assume backlighting off, predefined settings, or another stated condition.
- Confirm device support: check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact accessory, and Samsung’s current guidance for the Galaxy device and display.
- Keep a fallback: an OTG adapter, spare batteries, charging cable, or inexpensive wired input device can recover a work session when wireless input fails.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Samsung’s documentation establishes that DeX accepts Bluetooth and wired or wireless USB keyboards and mice, and that it provides desktop-style features including shortcuts, pointer control, drag-and-drop, and Alt+Tab switching. It also establishes that display compatibility and app behavior can impose separate limits.
There is no model-by-model compatibility ranking, latency test, ergonomic test, or universal battery comparison here. No specific keyboard or mouse should be described as the best for every DeX user on this basis. Treat product specifications as manufacturer claims, verify the exact connection path, and select the format that matches your desk and display setup.
