For a tactical gangster shooter whose exact title and patch are not specified, start with a repeatable low-to-medium mouse sensitivity that produces about 25–40 cm of mouse travel for a 360-degree turn, a fixed DPI, raw input with acceleration and smoothing disabled, and a stable 1000 Hz polling rate. Keep WASD movement, place sprint, crouch, jump, melee, tactical and lethal equipment, interact, and weapon swap within reach, then change one setting at a time until you can track targets, stop on a head-level point and clear corners without frequent mouse lifts.

There is no universal best numeric sensitivity. Desk space, grip, resolution, field of view, weapon zoom and the game’s hip-fire/ADS rules can move the useful value by more than tenfold. The procedure below gives you a transferable baseline without pretending that an un named game has a single correct slider value.

What the baseline is—and what it cannot decide

The exact game, platform, current patch and aim-scale model are unresolved. Before entering a final value, check whether the game has separate hip-fire and ADS sensitivities, a zoom multiplier, a raw-input toggle and independent controller or mouse profiles. A value that feels right in one first-person game may be dramatically wrong in another: the 2022 arXiv study Mouse Sensitivity Effects in First-Person Targeting Tasks reports that recommendations can vary by a factor of 10 or more.

Use the baseline as a controlled starting point rather than a prescription:

Setting Starting choice Reason
Turn distance 25–40 cm for one 360-degree turn A measurable range that balances stopping precision with the ability to turn through a doorway. The range is a starting point, not a game-specific optimum.
DPI Any sensor setting that tracks reliably; keep it fixed Changing DPI and in-game sensitivity together hides which change helped.
Polling 1000 Hz when supported by both mouse and game A defensible competitive baseline with broad support and predictable USB timing.
Input processing Raw input on; acceleration and smoothing off where exposed Preserves a repeatable relationship between hand movement and view movement.
Movement WASD retained Leaves familiar directional control available while the other fingers activate combat actions.

In a 2014 arXiv analysis titled Rapid Skill Capture in a First-Person Shooter, 476 game logs from more than 40 players were examined. That finding does not identify a magic setting; it reinforces why a repeatable setup and deliberate practice matter more than copying another player’s number.

Set mouse sensitivity by cm/360

Measure your current turn

  1. Place the mouse at a repeatable mark on the pad and face a distinctive wall feature in an empty area or practice range.
  2. Move the mouse in one smooth, straight sweep until the view turns exactly 360 degrees and the feature is centered again. If you hit the pad edge before completing the turn, your sensitivity is too low for the available space or you need a larger pad.
  3. Measure the distance traveled. Repeat in both directions and average the results; inconsistent readings usually indicate an uneven hand path or an in-game setting that changes between tests.
  4. Record the result beside your DPI, in-game sensitivity, field of view and ADS or zoom multiplier. This record is more useful than a copied slider number because it remains meaningful if the game or resolution changes.

Choose the first value

Start near the middle of the 25–40 cm/360 range if you have no preference. Move toward 25 cm when you need faster turns in tight rooms and have enough control to stop precisely. Move toward 40 cm when your crosshair overshoots heads, long-range tracking is difficult or you have ample desk space. Do not force the range if your game has unusual turn scaling; label the result as a baseline and evaluate its behavior instead.

Change one variable at a time

Keep DPI, resolution, field of view and zoom multipliers unchanged while testing sensitivity. Adjust the in-game slider in small increments, then repeat the 360-degree measurement. A useful setting lets you perform a rapid 180-degree turn, brake on a target and make short corrections without lifting the mouse on every corner. If you change DPI and sensitivity simultaneously, you cannot tell whether the improvement came from one or both.

Test the actions that matter

  • Tracking: follow a moving target at close and medium range without visibly oscillating around it.
  • Stopping: flick to a fixed point, release or slow the mouse and stop on the point rather than beyond it.
  • Corner clearing: sweep through a series of angles while keeping the crosshair at likely head height.
  • Recovery: turn behind you, return to the original angle and repeat. Large differences between left and right turns indicate technique or pad-space problems, not automatically a bad sensitivity.

DPI, raw input and acceleration

DPI is a consistency choice

There is no universal best DPI, and none exists independently of the sensor, grip, pad and game scale. Pick a DPI at which the pointer and game view move smoothly, then leave it unchanged while you tune the in-game value. Avoid switching DPI profiles mid-match; the sudden change makes practiced distances unreliable and can be mistaken for a performance or network problem.

If the mouse utility offers separate desktop and game profiles, make the game profile explicit and verify that the intended profile is active after reconnecting the mouse or waking the computer. Disable automatic profile switching unless you can confirm which executable triggers it.

Use unmodified movement where possible

Enable the game’s raw-input option when it is available. Turn off mouse acceleration, smoothing, filtering or angle snapping unless the named game’s competitive community documents a specific reason to retain one. These transformations can make the same physical movement produce different in-game distances, undermining a cm/360 measurement. Also check the operating system’s pointer settings for acceleration that the game may inherit when raw input is disabled.

Keep the physical setup repeatable

  • Center the mouse on the same part of the pad before each test.
  • Keep your forearm supported in the same way and avoid changing grip pressure between drills.
  • Leave enough horizontal pad space for a full 25–40 cm turn, with room to reset without touching the keyboard.
  • Use the same display resolution and field of view while comparing values.

Polling rate: why 1000 Hz is the practical baseline

Polling rate is a mouse hardware or driver setting, not an in-game sensitivity slider. Setup.gg describes it directly: “Polling Rate is not an in-game setting and must be adjusted with your mouse software or computer settings.” At 1000 Hz, the mouse reports approximately every millisecond; the figure describes report frequency, not the distance your crosshair moves.

Competitive-player setup examples collected by TechRadar include 1000 Hz configurations for TenZ, donk, Peterbot and ImperialHal. Those examples support 1000 Hz as a defensible baseline, not as proof that every player should copy a particular setup.

When to try a higher rate

Rates such as 2000, 4000 or 8000 Hz are optional. They can increase USB report traffic and system work, and they do not guarantee better aim. Try a higher rate only after the game is stable at 1000 Hz, your frame pacing is consistent and your mouse software and USB connection support the mode. Compare the same practice drill at each rate; keep the higher setting only if it remains stable and feels measurably consistent rather than merely sounding faster.

Diagnose polling instability

  • If the cursor or view stutters only at a high rate, return to 1000 Hz and retest before changing sensitivity.
  • If frame-time spikes appear when you move the mouse rapidly, check the game’s performance graph and lower the polling rate.
  • If the setting reverts after a reboot, save the hardware profile in the mouse utility and confirm the USB connection is not passing through an unreliable hub.

Keyboard layout for uninterrupted movement

Retain WASD unless the game or an accessibility need makes another layout necessary. The goal is to trigger urgent actions without releasing a movement key or stretching the hand so far that aim control suffers. There is no mandatory key for each action; comfort and reliable activation beat a fashionable bind.

Action Placement principle Validation check
Forward, left, back, right W, A, S, D Strafe and stop while pressing each nearby combat key.
Sprint Hold or toggle on a key reachable from the movement hand, commonly adjacent to WASD Start sprinting without lifting the finger used for the direction you are holding.
Crouch Reachable by the thumb or little finger without abandoning movement Crouch-peek and stand while maintaining a left-right strafe.
Jump Space or another large, unambiguous key Jump, land and immediately reacquire the crosshair.
Melee A fast, low-error key; a comfortable thumb button is viable Use it under pressure without accidentally activating an adjacent command.
Tactical equipment Dedicated nearby key or a thumb button Throw or deploy while still moving and looking at the intended area.
Lethal equipment Separate from tactical equipment but equally reachable Identify it by touch and avoid swapping the two during a rushed fight.
Interact Near movement hand, but not where accidental presses occur Open, pick up or activate an object while strafing.
Weapon swap Wheel, number row or a dedicated reachable key, depending on the game’s behavior Switch to the intended weapon and verify whether the game queues or interrupts the action.

Use thumb buttons deliberately

The two side buttons are useful for urgent actions such as melee, tactical equipment, lethal equipment or push-to-talk, provided your grip does not shift when you press them. Test each button while holding A or D. If pressing a side button causes the mouse to twist or your aim to jump, move that action to the keyboard instead; a theoretically fast bind that disturbs the crosshair is slower in real play.

Separate actions that are easy to confuse

Do not place tactical and lethal equipment on neighboring keys if you frequently misidentify them. Likewise, separate interact from reload or weapon swap when the game uses context-sensitive prompts. The best layout minimizes the cost of a mistake, not simply the distance to every key.

Account for hold, toggle and context behavior

Sprint, crouch and aim may offer hold or toggle modes. Test both in a private area. Hold generally exposes the current state immediately; toggle reduces finger strain but can leave you sprinting or crouched when you intended to stop. Choose the mode that keeps your movement predictable during peeks, utility throws and weapon changes, then leave it fixed while practicing.

A repeatable setup and practice protocol

  1. Record the starting profile. Write down DPI, 360-degree distance, in-game sensitivity, ADS or zoom values, polling rate, field of view, resolution and every custom bind.
  2. Remove hidden transformations. Enable raw input where available and disable acceleration, smoothing and filtering. Close any automatic profile switch that changes settings when the game launches.
  3. Measure the turn. Confirm your physical 360-degree distance and adjust only the in-game sensitivity until it falls in the chosen starting range or behaves appropriately for the game’s scale.
  4. Run a three-part drill. Spend equal time on tracking, stopping and corner clearing. Use the same targets and movement pattern for every candidate setting.
  5. Evaluate fatigue and resets. Play long enough to discover whether you repeatedly run out of pad space, tense your wrist or lift the mouse during ordinary fights. A setting that wins a short flick test but causes constant resets is not practical.
  6. Change one item. Alter sensitivity, a bind or polling rate—not several at once—then repeat the drill and note the result.
  7. Lock the profile. Once the setting is consistent, stop experimenting during competitive sessions. Muscle memory develops from repetition, not daily slider changes.

Common problems and fixes

You overshoot targets

First verify that DPI or an automatic profile did not change. If the profile is correct, reduce sensitivity slightly, keep the same polling rate and repeat the stopping drill. Also check that acceleration and smoothing are disabled; an inconsistent input curve can look like excessive sensitivity.

You cannot turn before reaching the pad edge

Measure the actual 360-degree distance. If it is well above your available horizontal space, increase sensitivity in small steps or use a larger pad. Keep enough room to reset the mouse without interrupting movement.

Your aim feels different after changing resolution or field of view

Record those display values with the sensitivity profile. Perceived speed and target size can change even when the slider is unchanged. Re-run tracking, stopping and corner-clearing drills instead of assuming the old value transfers perfectly.

Utility use breaks movement

Move tactical and lethal actions to reachable keys or thumb buttons, then test them while holding each WASD direction. If two actions are confused, separate their keys rather than relying on visual prompts during a fight.

High polling causes stutter

Return to 1000 Hz, confirm frame pacing and test the mouse on a direct, reliable USB connection. Higher polling is optional; stable reports are more valuable than a larger number.

Settings reset after updates

Keep a written or exported profile with the exact values and check the game after patches. Because the title and current patch are unspecified here, treat an update as a reason to verify raw input, sensitivity scale, ADS multipliers and binds before a competitive match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide whether a setup is ready

  • Consistency: the same physical sweep produces the same turn and you can reproduce it in both directions.
  • Reachability: sprint, crouch, jump, melee, tactical, lethal, interact and swap are usable without releasing necessary movement controls.
  • Stability: the selected polling rate does not introduce stutter, disconnects or frame-time spikes.
  • Space and comfort: the pad accommodates your chosen cm/360 distance and your grip remains relaxed through a full session.
  • Practice: the layout has been used long enough for the actions to become automatic rather than requiring visual lookup.

Only after these checks should you consider fine adjustments for a particular weapon, zoom level or map. If you move to another game, recalculate cm/360 and inspect its input and ADS rules instead of importing the old slider number.
