For the ninth-generation iPad, the safest keyboard choice is Apple’s Smart Keyboard for iPad (7th, 8th, and 9th generation). Pair it with a Bluetooth mouse that the manufacturer lists as compatible with iPadOS. A USB mouse can also work, but this iPad uses Lightning, so you may need an adapter. Do not buy the Magic Keyboard Folio intended for the iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16); it is not listed for the ninth-generation model.

The short answer: which keyboard and mouse should you buy?

Apple’s compatibility list gives one clear keyboard recommendation for this tablet generation: Smart Keyboard for iPad (7th, 8th, and 9th generation). That makes it the most defensible direct-fit choice when you want a keyboard case rather than a generic Bluetooth keyboard.

For a mouse, the evidence supports a category rather than a particular brand or model. Apple supports Bluetooth mice on iPad, so choose a current Bluetooth mouse whose maker explicitly states iPadOS compatibility. Check the exact model and generation, because features such as scrolling and gestures can vary. A wired USB mouse is another option, but the ninth-generation iPad has a Lightning connector rather than USB-C, so a suitable Lightning adapter or cable may be required.

The iPad (9th generation) was introduced in 2021. Its relevant connection hardware is a Smart Connector, Bluetooth 4.2, and a Lightning port, alongside a 10.2-inch display. Those details determine whether an accessory attaches directly, pairs wirelessly, or needs an adapter.

Keyboard picks for the ninth-generation iPad

1. Smart Keyboard for iPad (7th, 8th, and 9th generation)

This is the keyboard to select when confirmed fit is your priority. Apple’s compatibility table explicitly includes the iPad (9th generation), so you are not relying on a case seller’s vague “10.2-inch iPad” wording. The Smart Connector on the tablet is the hardware detail that makes this style of keyboard case relevant to the model.

Before ordering, read the complete product title and compatibility section. A listing should identify the iPad (9th generation), not merely say “for iPad” or “for 10.2-inch tablets.” Also check whether the keyboard layout matches your region, whether the item is new or used, and whether the listing includes the keyboard portion rather than only a replacement cover.

  • Best for: readers who want an attached keyboard case with the least compatibility uncertainty.
  • Connection type: Smart Connector rather than Bluetooth pairing.
  • Check before purchase: ninth-generation compatibility, regional layout, condition, included parts, and return terms.

2. A separate Bluetooth keyboard

A standalone Bluetooth keyboard can make sense if you already have a protective case, prefer a full-size layout, or want to use the keyboard away from the tablet. However, this research does not establish a named third-party model that can be called a confirmed top pick. Treat any model recommendation as conditional: the manufacturer should explicitly list iPadOS support, and the seller should identify the exact model number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate keyboards also change the practical trade-off. They are not attached to the iPad, so you must carry two pieces and position the keyboard yourself. In return, you can choose a layout and size that suit your desk. Do not infer compatibility from Bluetooth alone; a device may pair but still lack reliable support for iPadOS keys or shortcuts.

  • Choose this format when: desk use, a larger layout, or a keyboard independent of the case matters more than portability.
  • Verify: iPadOS support, the exact model number, keyboard layout, charging method, and whether the seller’s photos show the same revision being shipped.

Do not substitute the Magic Keyboard Folio

Apple lists Magic Keyboard Folio for the iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16). That compatibility entry does not include the iPad (9th generation). The similar screen-size description is not enough to establish a fit: camera placement, magnets, connector position, and shell dimensions can differ between generations. If a listing says only “Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad” without naming your model, treat it as a warning rather than proof of compatibility.

Mouse picks: Bluetooth first, wired when appropriate

Bluetooth mouse: the simplest general recommendation

Apple states that an iPad can connect to a Magic Mouse, another Bluetooth mouse, or a USB mouse. For most ninth-generation iPad users, a Bluetooth mouse is the cleanest category choice because it avoids a cable and leaves the Lightning port available for charging.

Pick by exact compatibility information, not by brand familiarity. Confirm that the manufacturer names iPadOS or iPad in the specifications. If you expect scrolling, secondary-click behavior, or other pointer gestures, check that the exact mouse generation supports them on iPadOS. A mouse that works on a computer may pair successfully yet provide a different feature set on an iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: travel, classrooms, mobile work, and setups where you do not want an adapter.
  • Before buying: verify iPadOS support, the mouse generation, pairing method, and the gestures documented for that model.

USB mouse: useful if you already own one

Apple also documents USB mouse connections. On this iPad, the Lightning port means the mouse normally cannot plug in directly as it would to a USB-C tablet. You need an appropriate Lightning-to-USB adapter or cable, and the adapter must support the type of USB device you are connecting.

A wired setup can be sensible for a fixed workstation or when you want to avoid wireless pairing. It is less convenient for travel because the mouse and adapter become a two-part connection, and the Lightning port may be occupied while the mouse is attached.

Important limitation for first-generation Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad

Apple specifically warns that first-generation Magic Mouse and first-generation Magic Trackpad do not support scrolling or other gestures with iPadOS. They may still connect, but the pointer experience will not match what you might expect from a newer generation. Keep this warning limited to those first-generation devices; it is not a blanket statement about every Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

Software and hardware requirements

Bluetooth mouse and trackpad support requires iPadOS 13.4 or later. Apple’s supported-device information includes iPad (5th generation) or later, which covers the ninth-generation iPad. If your tablet is running an older iPadOS release, update it before troubleshooting a mouse that will not appear in Bluetooth settings.

  • Tablet: iPad (9th generation), introduced in 2021.
  • Display and ports: 10.2-inch display, Smart Connector, and Lightning connector.
  • Wireless hardware: Bluetooth 4.2.
  • Mouse software: iPadOS 13.4 or later for Bluetooth mouse or trackpad support.
  • Wired mouse: an appropriate Lightning adapter or cable for the USB device.

How to connect a Bluetooth mouse

  1. Update the iPad. Confirm that the tablet is running iPadOS 13.4 or later. Updating removes an avoidable software-compatibility problem.
  2. Put the mouse in pairing mode. Use the mouse’s pairing or discovery control until its indicator shows that it is discoverable. The exact button and light behavior depends on the mouse.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings. On the iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and leave Bluetooth enabled.
  4. Select the mouse. Find the device under Other Devices, then tap its name. Complete any pairing confirmation shown on screen.
  5. Test the pointer. Move the mouse and confirm that the circular pointer appears. Test a click and scrolling before relying on the setup for work.

If the mouse is already paired with another computer, phone, or tablet, unpair it there first or place it back into discovery mode. A device that remains connected elsewhere may not appear under Other Devices on the iPad.

How to connect a USB mouse

  1. Identify the mouse plug. Confirm whether it is USB-A, USB-C, or another connector.
  2. Choose a compatible Lightning adapter or cable. The iPad (9th generation) does not have a USB-C port, so the accessory must connect through Lightning.
  3. Connect the adapter to the iPad, then attach the mouse. Keep the connection secure; a loose adapter can look like a mouse failure.
  4. Move the mouse and check for the pointer. If nothing happens, disconnect and reconnect the adapter, then test the mouse on another device to rule out a hardware fault.

A wired mouse may draw power through the adapter. If the iPad reports an accessory or power issue, use an adapter suitable for the USB device and disconnect other power-hungry accessories while testing.

Choosing between an attached keyboard and a separate one

Priority More suitable format Reason
Confirmed ninth-generation fit and one-piece portability Smart Keyboard for iPad (7th, 8th, and 9th generation) Apple explicitly lists the model and the keyboard stays with the tablet.
Large desk layout or independent positioning Separate Bluetooth keyboard You can position it away from the screen, but you must verify the exact model’s iPadOS support.
Minimal wireless setup Smart Keyboard plus Bluetooth mouse The keyboard uses the tablet’s Smart Connector while the mouse connects wirelessly.
Existing wired peripherals Separate keyboard or mouse through suitable adapters Lightning adapters add cables and may occupy the tablet’s only port.

The Smart Keyboard and mouse solve different connection problems. The keyboard can be selected on a model-confirmed basis, while the mouse should be selected after checking the manufacturer’s support statement and the features of its exact generation.

Buying checklist for listings and used accessories

  • Identify the iPad correctly. Select iPad (9th generation), not iPad (10th generation), iPad (A16), or an unspecified “10.2-inch” case.
  • Read the compatibility line. For the keyboard, look for explicit wording that includes the ninth generation.
  • Check the connector. The tablet has a Smart Connector and Lightning port; it does not offer USB-C.
  • Confirm the mouse generation. First-generation Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad have the documented gesture limitation.
  • Check keyboard layout. US, UK, and other regional layouts are not interchangeable if the printed legends matter to you.
  • Check condition and included parts. Used keyboard cases may be sold without the cover, and wired mouse listings may omit the adapter you need.
  • Confirm stock and returns at checkout. Availability, seller, condition, and regional versions can change independently of a product’s compatibility.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Bluetooth mouse does not appear

Return the mouse to pairing mode, make sure it is not still connected to another device, and reopen Settings > Bluetooth. Confirm that iPadOS 13.4 or later is installed. If the mouse has several device channels, select the channel intended for a new pairing.

The mouse pairs but there is no scrolling

First check whether it is a first-generation Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. Apple documents that those first-generation devices do not support scrolling or other gestures with iPadOS. If it is a different model, consult that model’s iPadOS feature documentation rather than assuming every desktop gesture is available.

The USB mouse is not detected

Check that the adapter is designed for a Lightning iPad and that the USB plug is fully seated. Test the mouse on another device. If the mouse works elsewhere, reconnect the adapter and remove other accessories while testing; the Lightning connection may need to provide power as well as data.

The keyboard case does not fit

Compare the listing’s supported models with the exact tablet generation. A case for iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16), including the Magic Keyboard Folio listed for those models, should not be treated as a ninth-generation accessory. Also check whether you purchased a keyboard-only replacement or a complete case.

Recommended setups by use case

Most certain compatibility

Choose the Smart Keyboard explicitly listed for iPad (7th, 8th, and 9th generation), then add a Bluetooth mouse whose manufacturer names iPadOS support. This combination follows Apple’s confirmed keyboard compatibility and the supported Bluetooth-mouse category without forcing a newer case onto an older tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel and study

An attached Smart Keyboard keeps the typing surface with the iPad and avoids carrying a separate keyboard. Pair a compact Bluetooth mouse only if you need pointer control; otherwise, the keyboard alone leaves the Lightning port free for charging.

Desk work

A separate Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can provide more flexible placement. Verify both exact models before purchase. If you already own a USB mouse, an appropriate Lightning adapter may be less expensive than replacing it, but it adds a cable and uses the tablet’s only port while connected.

Existing first-generation Apple pointing device

You can try pairing it, but plan around the documented lack of scrolling and other gestures. If those actions are essential, choose a mouse generation whose iPadOS support information explicitly includes them.

What “best” means for this iPad

There is no substantiated performance ranking, battery-life comparison, customer-satisfaction score, or current price table for these accessories here. The meaningful distinction is compatibility: a keyboard case that names the ninth-generation iPad, a mouse that supports iPadOS, and a connection method that matches the tablet’s Smart Connector or Lightning port.

For that reason, the Smart Keyboard is the strongest direct-fit keyboard pick, while “Bluetooth mouse for iPadOS” is the appropriate mouse category. Treat a product page’s model number, generation, connector, and operating-system support as the decision criteria, and avoid assuming that a newer iPad accessory will fit this 2021 tablet.
