There is no verified “best preset” for Kernel Hearts yet. Whitethorn Games announced the game as an in-development action-packed co-op multiplayer roguelike on June 7, 2025, but has not published a final graphics-settings table, frame-rate target, controller-remapping map, or accessibility menu. Until the release build documents those options, the safest approach is to optimize in this order: stabilize frame time, make the camera and lock-on predictable, place dodge and other combat actions within easy reach, then validate everything in a four-player fight.

What is confirmed about Kernel Hearts

Kernel Hearts is being developed by EPHEMERA and published by Whitethorn Games as an action-focused roguelike built for solo play or online teams. A run combines temporary skills that improve attacks, spells, and movement. When the run ends, you return to a laboratory where you can unlock and equip up to 256KB of skill chips for persistent customization. The publisher lists PC via Steam and Xbox Series X|S as platforms and says that you can play alone or with up to three friends.

Those systems make consistent timing more important than maximum visual quality. Enemy waves, boss attacks, transformations, movement skills and simultaneous co-op effects all make a sudden frame-time spike feel like a missed dodge. The publisher’s own description is: “Play alone or with up to three friends, honing and synergizing your skills to become the ultimate fighting force to get you to the top.” That design goal is why the recommendations below favor stable response over an unverified visual preset.

Fact What it means for settings
Development status The June 7, 2025 announcement described Kernel Hearts as in development; final options may change.
Platforms named by the publisher PC through Steam and Xbox Series X|S. A handheld mode or another console version is not established.
Player count Solo or up to four players total, so test both quiet runs and effect-heavy co-op encounters.
Combat structure Temporary attack, spell and movement skills, transformations and persistent skill-chip customization make input clarity valuable.
Published technical targets No authoritative FPS target, input-latency figure, hardware requirement or final graphics-options list has been released.

The best settings order while the final menu is unknown

Do not begin by copying a numeric “low,” “medium” or “competitive” preset from another game. Kernel Hearts has no published preset that can be verified. Use the following sequence whenever the build exposes the relevant option.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Choose the most stable frame-rate mode. If the game offers a frame-rate cap or performance/quality modes, start with the mode that produces the fewest visible hitches during combat. A lower but steady output is preferable to a higher number that repeatedly drops during enemy waves.
  2. Reduce resolution or expensive effects before compromising responsiveness. If frame pacing is uneven, lower output resolution or effects that create large GPU spikes. Keep the control path responsive; do not chase sharper imagery while attacks and dodges arrive late.
  3. Set camera and lock-on behavior before cosmetic options. If the menu includes camera sensitivity, recentering, lock-on persistence or target-switch controls, tune those first and test them in ordinary encounters.
  4. Make dodge immediately reachable. If remapping, input buffering, dead-zone or sensitivity controls exist, place dodge on a button you can press without lifting your movement thumb. Test the change against routine attacks before attempting a boss run.
  5. Keep core combat actions adjacent. Movement, attack, dodge, lock-on and transformation should be accessible without releasing movement. This matters more than a perfect menu arrangement for secondary actions.
  6. Recheck in co-op. A setting that feels smooth alone may become difficult to read when up to four players trigger skills and enemies fill the screen.

These are practical priorities inferred from the announced combat and multiplayer design, not hidden developer-recommended values. Exact names, sliders and numeric values remain provisional until the final build exposes them.

How to make Kernel Hearts run smoother

Start with a repeatable test

Use the same short route or encounter each time you change a setting. Begin with a solo run, perform repeated attacks and dodges, and then repeat the test during a busy fight. Note visible hitching, delayed inputs, camera jumps and image clarity separately. Changing several options at once makes it impossible to identify which adjustment helped.

Prefer frame-time consistency to a headline FPS number

No authoritative Kernel Hearts frame-rate target has been published, so do not treat an online number as a guaranteed requirement. Look for regular motion and predictable input. A stable cap, if the game provides one, can feel better than an uncapped output that oscillates whenever effects or enemies appear. If the game has no in-game cap, use only a platform-level limiter that the game and your display support; do not assume a particular value is correct for every monitor or television.

Lower the costly options first

When a performance mode is unavailable or still stutters, reduce the options that usually create the largest rendering spikes—such as output resolution or high-cost effects—before removing visual features that do not affect combat timing. Because Kernel Hearts has not published its final labels, treat this as a decision rule rather than a list of guaranteed menu items. Apply one change, repeat the same encounter and keep the change only if frame pacing improves without making targets unreadable.

Check the worst case, not just the opening area

Runs can combine temporary skills, spells, movement effects, transformations and multiple players. A quiet room is not a performance pass. Test the most crowded encounter available, including a boss or a co-op wave, and watch for brief freezes at the exact moment an attack must be dodged. If solo play is smooth but co-op is not, keep the solo settings and reduce the most expensive effects or resolution one step for multiplayer sessions if the game allows separate profiles.

Recommended control layout principles

The final controller map is not documented, so the following is a starting arrangement rather than a claim about the shipped defaults. The goal is to keep the actions that determine survival on the face buttons or triggers you can reach while maintaining movement.

Action Placement principle Reason
Movement Leave the left stick unobstructed and avoid layouts that require a claw grip for basic navigation. Movement skills and enemy spacing are central to a run.
Attack Use the primary face button or trigger that you can press repeatedly without changing your grip. Frequent attacks should not compete with camera control.
Dodge Put it beside attack or on a reachable shoulder button; avoid a location that forces your thumb off movement during danger. Timing is more important than convenience for infrequent actions.
Lock-on Use a stick click or shoulder input only if it does not cause accidental camera movement; otherwise choose the nearest unused button. Quick target control is valuable when several enemies surround the party.
Transformation Assign it to a deliberate, reachable input rather than a button you hit while attacking. Transformations can change the available attack and movement choices.
Spell or skill selection Keep selection close to the combat cluster, but do not displace dodge or attack. Temporary skills are meant to be combined during a run.

After remapping, perform ten ordinary dodges, several target switches and at least one transformation without looking down at the controller. If an action is missed because your thumb leaves movement, move that action before adjusting sensitivity. Do not assume a remap applies to every mode; confirm it in solo and co-op if the build stores separate profiles.

Fixing a camera that feels off

A current third-party report by Big-N describes cases in which the camera may fail to recenter behind the character during lock-on. That is an observation about a reported build, not a developer guarantee that every player will see the same behavior. If your camera behaves this way, work through these checks in order.

  1. Reproduce it without changing graphics settings. Lock onto one target in an ordinary encounter, release lock-on, turn the camera manually and lock on again. This separates a camera-state problem from a frame-time hitch.
  2. Look for recenter and lock-on controls. If the final menu exposes automatic recentering, lock-on persistence, target switching or camera sensitivity, change one setting at a time. Use a modest adjustment first; extreme sensitivity can make a genuine recenter feel like oversteer.
  3. Test target switching in a group. Cycle between nearby targets while moving sideways. If the camera jumps to an unintended enemy, choose a target-switch method that follows the game’s documented direction or disable automatic cycling if that option exists.
  4. Separate camera drift from performance drops. Repeat the test after lowering the most expensive graphics option. If the camera is still pointed away while motion remains smooth, the issue is probably camera behavior rather than rendering load.
  5. Reset before escalating. Restore the camera options to their defaults, restart the game and reproduce the same sequence. Record the platform, whether you were solo or in co-op, the lock-on state and the exact action that preceded the problem.

Do not promise yourself that a particular sensitivity number will fix this behavior: no verified value has been published. A useful control layout should let you release lock-on and manually recover the camera without sacrificing movement.

Fixing unreliable dodge input

Big-N also reports that dodging can feel inconsistent in the current game. Before treating every missed dodge as a timing error, determine whether the input, the camera or frame pacing is responsible.

Check the input path

  • Press dodge in a quiet area and confirm that the same button works consistently for other actions.
  • If remapping is available, move dodge to an immediately reachable button and remove duplicate assignments that could create accidental presses.
  • If the menu exposes an input buffer, use a small buffer first and test ordinary attacks; the exact value is not established for Kernel Hearts.
  • If a stick dead-zone or trigger threshold is available, change only one control at a time and verify that movement does not begin drifting.

Check timing and frame pacing

Repeat the same enemy attack after choosing the most stable frame-rate mode. If dodge succeeds when the scene is clear but fails during effects or co-op waves, prioritize frame-time stability and reduce costly rendering options. If it fails equally in a quiet scene, the problem is more likely to be button placement, an input setting or the reported dodge behavior.

Practice before a boss run

Use ordinary encounters to test the new layout. Perform dodges while moving, while locked on and immediately after an attack. Only keep the setting when the action works in all three situations; a layout that works in a stationary test may still be too slow for a boss pattern.

Solo and co-op settings should be tested separately

Kernel Hearts supports solo play and teams of up to four. Solo testing is useful for isolating camera, dodge and controller issues. Co-op testing is necessary for judging whether the image remains readable when several players use skills at once.

Test situation What to observe Adjustment decision
Solo traversal Camera recentering, ordinary movement and baseline frame pacing. Fix control behavior before judging image quality.
Solo combat Dodge timing, lock-on target changes and attack response. Move dodge or lock-on if either requires releasing movement.
Two-player fight Whether effects obscure targets and whether frame pacing changes. Reduce expensive effects or resolution only if the slowdown is repeatable.
Four-player encounter Worst-case visual clutter, input clarity and camera recovery after lock-on. Use the most stable available mode; do not judge the game from a quiet solo scene.

If you use voice chat or another overlay on PC, test it in the same session as well. An overlay can change available performance headroom even when the game’s own settings are unchanged; keep the test conditions consistent before attributing a hitch to Kernel Hearts.

PC and Xbox Series X|S considerations

PC via Steam

The publisher identifies PC via Steam as a platform but has not published final hardware requirements or a frame-rate target. Choose options by observed frame pacing on your particular system rather than assuming a specification from another action game transfers. Record your display resolution, graphics mode, frame cap and whether the issue occurs solo or in co-op. This information makes a support report actionable without implying that an unverified requirement is official.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox Series X|S

The announcement also names Xbox Series X|S. If the console build offers performance and quality modes, begin with the mode that remains consistent in a crowded fight. If it provides no per-setting controls, use the available mode selector and concentrate on camera, lock-on and dodge behavior. Do not assume that an option available on PC will appear on Xbox, or that the two consoles will expose identical targets.

Handheld or docked play

No handheld edition or handheld-specific output mode is established in the announcement. Do not apply a handheld-versus-docked recommendation unless the final release adds such a platform and documents its options.

How to compare options when the final build arrives

When Kernel Hearts receives documented graphics and control menus, compare modes using the same encounter rather than a single screenshot. Record the result for each option on these axes:

  • Frame-time stability: Does motion remain even during enemy waves and transformations?
  • Image clarity: Can you distinguish targets and attack effects at normal playing distance?
  • Input responsiveness: Do attack and dodge actions occur consistently when pressed?
  • Camera and lock-on consistency: Does recentering behave predictably when switching targets?
  • Dodge reliability: Does the action work while moving, locked on and under visual load?
  • Solo versus co-op behavior: Does the mode survive the heaviest four-player scene?
Option or feature Verified Kernel Hearts value How to evaluate it
Frame-rate target Not stated by the publisher. Judge consistency in a repeatable combat scene.
Input latency Not stated by the publisher. Use repeated attack and dodge tests rather than an assumed number.
Controller-remapping map Not published. Check whether core actions can be placed without releasing movement.
Accessibility menu Not published. Confirm which options exist in the release build before relying on them.
Graphics presets and effects Final table not published. Change one option at a time and test the busiest encounter.

Troubleshooting decision tree

The whole game feels uneven

First select the most stable available frame-rate mode. Then reduce resolution or expensive effects one step and repeat the same encounter. If the hitch remains only in co-op, use the co-op test as your baseline rather than the opening solo area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only the camera feels wrong

Reproduce the issue with lock-on, inspect any recenter and target-switch controls, and reset the camera options if changes make the behavior worse. If motion is otherwise smooth, do not assume a graphics reduction will solve it.

Only dodge fails

Move dodge to a reachable button, test any available buffer or dead-zone setting conservatively, and repeat the action while moving and locked on. If failures coincide with visual spikes, return to frame-time tuning.

Controls work solo but not in co-op

Repeat the same actions during a crowded multiplayer encounter. If the camera remains stable but inputs arrive late, reduce the most expensive visual option available. If the camera alone breaks, document the lock-on state, target count and platform for support rather than treating it as a universal setting problem.

What to verify before calling a setup “best”

  • The game is using the intended performance or quality mode, not an assumed preset name.
  • Frame pacing remains acceptable in the busiest solo and co-op encounters you can reproduce.
  • Dodge, attack, lock-on and transformation are reachable without removing the thumb from movement.
  • Camera recentering and target switching are predictable after repeated lock-on tests.
  • The same control layout works after a restart and, if applicable, in both solo and multiplayer sessions.
  • You have not mistaken a third-party observation for a guaranteed behavior of every release build.

Bottom line

For the current, still-in-development version of Kernel Hearts, the best approach is a disciplined priority order rather than a claimed numeric preset: choose stable frame pacing, lower costly rendering options when combat hitches, tune lock-on and camera behavior, place dodge beside the movement-and-attack cluster, and validate the result in a four-player fight. Because the publisher has not released final performance targets, graphics values, remapping details or accessibility options, treat every exact menu value as provisional until it appears in the completed build.
