Once Upon A KATAMARI adds time-period stages, character customization, a magnet that attracts nearby objects and KatamariBall competition against online opponents or the CPU. Eternal Mode has no time limit. That single change affects the way you approach a stage: instead of prioritizing a target size before the timer expires, you can concentrate on exploring, finding routes and watching the Katamari absorb progressively larger objects. It is the strongest reason to choose this edition if timed stages are your least favorite part of the series.
“No time limit” does not mean every other objective disappears. Treat Eternal Mode as a relaxed way to play rather than as a guarantee that every challenge is removed. The official description establishes the absence of the timer, not a separate rule set for every stage.

Selfie mode and quality-of-life changes modernize the presentation
Selfie mode is another addition in the REROLL+ edition. Along with other quality-of-life changes, it gives the remaster features that were not part of the 2005 release. These additions matter most to players who like collecting screenshots or want a version designed for current hardware rather than an untouched reissue.
What the publisher says—and what that does not prove

When Katamari Damacy REROLL is the better choice
You want the original structure
Katamari Damacy REROLL is the modern edition of the first game. Its defining hook is deliberately simple: use the analog sticks to control the Katamari, collect objects and grow. If you prefer to understand a series from its starting point, this is the appropriate next purchase even after playing a newer entry.
You prefer a straightforward introduction
Starting with the original can make the series’ basic rules easier to appreciate. You encounter the core object-collecting premise without first comparing it with every later system. That is especially useful if Once Upon A KATAMARI’s customization, magnet and competition features made you curious about what the earlier games were built around.

If the new systems made you wonder how the series worked before customization, magnets and KatamariBall, go to Katamari Damacy REROLL. Switch 2 owners: understand the dated announcement and save-transfer condition
Bandai Namco announced a Switch 2 version of Once Upon A KATAMARI for October 8, 2026, with mouse controls and smoother performance. The same announcement covers separately sold Rolling LIVE Highlights downloadable content. Because that release date has now passed, check the live Nintendo listing and the publisher’s current product information rather than relying on an announcement-era description.
The announcement says that transferring Switch save data to Switch 2 requires that no save data for the game already exist on the Switch 2 system. In practical terms, check the destination console before starting a transfer: an existing save can prevent the announced transfer process from working as described. The condition applies to the Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer mentioned in that announcement, not automatically to saves for the older remasters.
Read the complete Switch 2 and DLC announcement alongside the current storefront page. It is version-specific information for Once Upon A KATAMARI, not evidence that Katamari Damacy REROLL or We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie has the same mouse-control, performance or save-transfer behavior.
