The best JBL Flip alternative depends on what you want to change: the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) is a compact option with IP67 protection and a stated 12-hour battery life under Bose’s test conditions, while the Sony ULT FIELD 1 offers a different portable design with a multi-way strap. The JBL Flip 7 remains a useful benchmark for size, protection and speaker-linking features. Manufacturer specifications can show how they differ, but they do not establish which one sounds best.
What to compare when choosing a JBL Flip alternative
Start with the trade-offs that matter in your use: water and dust protection, physical size and weight, battery-life claims, and whether the speaker can link with others in the same ecosystem. Ratings and runtime figures come from manufacturers and are not necessarily measured under the same conditions. If sound quality is your deciding factor, listen to the models yourself or consult independent listening tests.
- Protection: Compare the stated IP rating, but do not assume different ratings mean identical protection in every real-world situation.
- Portability: Check dimensions, weight and carry features, not just product photos.
- Battery: Read the test conditions and distinguish a detailed runtime specification from an advertised maximum or feature-assisted figure.
- Speaker linking: Confirm that a model’s party or stereo features suit the speakers you already own.
JBL Flip 7: the current comparison point
JBL’s Flip 7 page lists Bluetooth 5.4, IP68, Auracast support, dimensions of 182.5 × 69.5 × 71.5 mm, and maximum music playback of 14 hours. JBL separately promotes up to 16 hours when Playtime Boost adds two hours. These are manufacturer claims, and actual playback time depends on use. JBL Flip 7 specifications
JBL says its IP68 claim is based on lab testing in up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes; the company separately describes a one-metre drop test onto concrete. Those are manufacturer test claims, not instructions to recreate the tests at home.

How the alternatives compare
| Speaker | Protection | Size and weight | Battery information | Connectivity and linking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Flip 7 | IP68, according to JBL | 182.5 × 69.5 × 71.5 mm | 14-hour maximum music playback specification; up to 16 hours promoted with Playtime Boost. Manufacturer claims; playback conditions affect results. | Bluetooth 5.4; Auracast support |
| Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) | IP67, according to Bose | About 1.3 lb; Bose describes a compact body with a loop-carry design. | Up to 12 hours in Bose’s test using Bluetooth A2DP at 50% volume, 68°F–77°F, default EQ, and no external-device charging. | Bluetooth 5.3; Bose lists party and stereo features for two speakers. |
| Sony ULT FIELD 1 | Sony describes it as waterproof, dustproof and shockproof; the cited specification does not provide a comparable IP rating. | Approximately 206 × 77 × 76 mm and 650 g. | A comparable runtime figure is not stated in the cited Sony specification. | A multi-way strap is described; a Bluetooth version and comparable speaker-linking details are not stated in the cited specification. |
Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen): for a compact carry design
The SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) is a plausible choice if you want a compact speaker with a loop-carry design and documented IP67 protection. Bose lists Bluetooth 5.3 and a weight of about 1.3 pounds. Its stated 12-hour runtime comes with explicit test conditions, so avoid treating it as directly equivalent to another manufacturer’s maximum unless the test methods match. Bose also lists party and stereo features for pairing two speakers. Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) specifications
Sony ULT FIELD 1: for Sony’s portable line and strap options
Sony’s support specifications give the ULT FIELD 1 approximate dimensions of 206 × 77 × 76 mm and a mass of about 650 g. Sony’s product description calls it waterproof, dustproof and shockproof, but the cited specification does not establish an IP rating or a runtime figure. Do not infer either from the descriptive wording. Sony ULT FIELD 1 specifications

Which speaker should you pick?
- Choose the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) if IP67 protection, its loop-carry design, and Bose’s two-speaker party or stereo features match your priorities.
- Consider the Sony ULT FIELD 1 if its dimensions, weight and multi-way strap suit your carry needs and you are considering Sony’s portable ULT line. Verify runtime and protection details for your intended use rather than assuming an IP rating.
- Stick with the JBL Flip 7 as your benchmark if its listed IP68 rating, Auracast support or the JBL linking ecosystem are the features you want to preserve.
These manufacturer pages do not establish a listening-test winner. For a sound-led decision, audition the speakers with music you know at a realistic listening volume.
