Start with 007 First Light if you want a current Bond adventure. IO Interactive’s 2026 release is a story-led, third-person action and stealth game about a young James Bond entering MI6 training. It launched globally on May 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Choose GoldenEye 007 itself when multiplayer, four-player nostalgia and classic first-person mission design matter more than modern presentation. Nintendo’s restored 1997 Nintendo 64 shooter remains the clearest benchmark for Bond multiplayer, while Nightfire is the best legacy alternative for fast console shooting, gadgets, vehicles and local matches.

Which James Bond game should you play after GoldenEye?

Your best choice depends on what you want from the follow-up. 007 First Light is the obvious starting point for a new, officially supported Bond campaign. It offers modern graphics, cinematic presentation, third-person combat and stealth, and an original origin story rather than another adaptation of a familiar film. It is also single-player only.

If the reason you loved GoldenEye 007 was competitive play, split-screen-style memories or the feel of an N64-era first-person shooter, no newer game in this group replaces it exactly. Return to GoldenEye 007 through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, or look for a legacy copy of Nightfire. Everything or Nothing, Blood Stone and 007 Legends are better viewed as different kinds of Bond campaigns than as direct successors.

1. 007 First Light: the best modern starting point

007 First Light is the strongest recommendation for someone who has finished the GoldenEye content and wants a Bond game that feels current rather than archival. IO Interactive describes it as “a bespoke, reimagined origin story of a young James Bond as he earns his place within MI6’s elite training program.” That premise gives the game room to establish Bond’s skills and relationships instead of retelling a movie that most players already know.

007 First Light - Specialist Edition - PlayStation 5
  • ONLY AT AMAZON - SPECIALIST EDITION
  • EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
  • A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
  • SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.

The game combines third-person action and stealth. That perspective changes the rhythm from GoldenEye’s weapon-first corridors: you can read Bond’s movement, approach situations more deliberately and experience set pieces as a cinematic character rather than as a pair of hands holding a gun. The campaign is designed as a focused single-player experience, so it is the right pick for players who want a story with a beginning, progression and conclusion.

Platforms and release dates

  • Released May 27, 2026: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
  • Confirmed for March 18, 2027: Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Sales channel named by the publisher: IO Interactive lists Amazon.com among the places selling the game. Check the listing for your country, current stock and edition before buying.

The Switch 2 date is a scheduled release, not evidence that the game is available on the original Nintendo Switch. If you play on Nintendo hardware today, GoldenEye 007 remains the immediately available Bond option through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

What “single-player only” means

IO Interactive’s FAQ is explicit: “We are fully committed to building the best experience possible for 007 First Light and that does not include a multiplayer experience.” There is therefore no GoldenEye-style competitive mode to unlock or download. Buy it for the campaign, not for online matches or couch competition.

Why its early sales matter, and what they do not prove

IO Interactive reported 4 million units sold within the game’s first three months in 2026. That is a substantial current-market result and confirms that the game has found a large audience. Sales do not, by themselves, guarantee that its controls or stealth systems will suit every GoldenEye fan, so use the perspective and multiplayer distinctions above when deciding.

2. GoldenEye 007: still the multiplayer yardstick

GoldenEye 007 is the 1997 Rare/Nintendo 64 shooter that defines the comparison. Its appeal is not only the Bond license. The campaign’s mission structure, objectives, cheats and weapon-based pacing created a template that later Bond games repeatedly approached without reproducing its exact identity.

Nintendo restored the game through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The service version preserves the classic game while adding online play, giving many players the simplest legal modern route to the original. It is the practical answer when a group asks for a Bond match tonight rather than a used-hardware project.

Choose GoldenEye again when these features matter

  • You specifically want first-person shooting rather than third-person action.
  • You want the original mission layouts, cheat system and N64-era pacing.
  • Your priority is multiplayer, including the restored version’s online functionality.
  • You want to compare every later Bond game against the source of the formula.

The Switch release is a subscription/service route, not a standalone modern remake. Access depends on maintaining Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, while the exact online experience can depend on your connection and the people you play with.

3. Nightfire: the closest legacy follow-up for shooter fans

Nightfire is the best alternative when you want a classic console Bond shooter rather than a modern origin story. It keeps the action fast and adds the gadget use, vehicles and local multiplayer that many players associate with the Brosnan-era games. Its design belongs to an earlier generation, so expect legacy controls, older audiovisual presentation and a used-market search rather than a guaranteed download on a current storefront.

Why Nightfire follows GoldenEye naturally

Both games make Bond’s equipment and mission objectives central to the action, and both are remembered for multiplayer as much as for their campaigns. Nightfire is not a remaster of GoldenEye, however. Its campaign and hardware era are different, and its present-day convenience is lower. Treat it as a second-hand or legacy-platform purchase: verify the disc or cartridge condition, the required console and whether local multiplayer accessories are included.

4. Everything or Nothing: the cinematic third-person choice

Everything or Nothing is the pick for players who want Bond to feel like an interactive film. It uses third-person action, large set pieces and a film-like original story rather than simply replaying the GoldenEye formula in first person.

  • Fight worthy adversaries - Advanced AI systems allow enemies to react to you in intelligent and tactical ways. Think quickly, because they'll seek cover and outflank you
  • The new world of Bond - Using the likenesses and voices of actors from both films including Daniel Craig and Judi Dench, the game immerses you in the story of how Bond becomes the ultimate 00 agent. Each mission will take you through the exotic locations such as Casino Royale in Madagascar, the deserts of Bolivia and the streets of Austria
  • Become the world's premier MI6 agent - Bond gets online with standard 12-player multiplayer mode plus unique Bond modes such as Bond VS which pits you against other opponents in an intense race to complete objectives, and Golden Gun mode, which lets you perform one hit kills using the coveted Golden Gun

That makes it a useful companion to First Light. You get the same broad shift away from N64-style corridors toward authored cinematic moments, but in a legacy title whose access is generally tied to older consoles. No current digital storefront or universal modern-platform release is published, so availability should be checked by region before you spend time searching for a copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

  • Players who value story and set pieces over competitive matches.
  • Fans who prefer third-person movement and a visible Bond character.
  • Collectors comfortable buying and maintaining older-console software.

5. Blood Stone: a bridge to more modern Bond presentation

Blood Stone offers cinematic action and a later-generation presentation than the N64-era games. It is a reasonable choice when you want a darker, more contemporary Bond thriller but cannot or do not want to start with First Light.

The trade-off is access. The game is associated with older consoles and PC, and its resale status can vary by region. No single current-platform route is published for every reader, so check the platform printed on a used listing, regional compatibility and whether the seller is providing complete software rather than only a case or code that has already been redeemed.

How it differs from First Light

Blood Stone is a legacy purchase with regional availability questions; First Light is a current release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a dated Switch 2 version. First Light is also explicitly an origin story and explicitly single-player. Those distinctions are more useful than treating both games as interchangeable “modern Bond” titles.

6. 007 Legends: choose it for the film-mission format

007 Legends gathers multiple Bond-film scenarios into one compilation. Its appeal is breadth: instead of following one original storyline, you move through missions inspired by different eras of Bond cinema. That structure suits players who want recognizable film situations and a tour through the character’s history.

James Bond 007 From Russia With Love - Gamecube
  • Build your own Bond, based on Sean Connery, in a retro, 1960s Cold War era setting -- complete with classic cars, architecture, fashion, and exotic locations
  • Innovative gameplay, wider variety, non-linear missions, introduction of new focus/zoom function
  • RPG elements - Invest in your character by equipping, upgrading, scoring and rewards
  • Intense action, driving, jetpack and stealth missions
  • Features movie-based missions as well as original, action-intensive sequences

It is also a legacy title with limited modern storefront access. Multiplayer is part of its history, but current availability is not as straightforward as the restored GoldenEye 007 service version. Confirm the platform, region and online requirements before buying, especially if multiplayer is the reason you are considering it.

Which game is closest to GoldenEye?

No single game matches every part of GoldenEye 007. The closest choice depends on the feature you are trying to preserve:

If you mean “closest” in this sense… Choose Reason
Original first-person mission feel GoldenEye 007 The restored version is the original 1997 game, not an approximation.
Multiplayer and group play GoldenEye 007, then Nightfire GoldenEye has the clearest modern access; Nightfire is the legacy alternative with local multiplayer.
Classic Bond shooter with gadgets and vehicles Nightfire It preserves the older console-shooter identity while adding its own gadget and vehicle focus.
Cinematic Bond campaign 007 First Light It is a current, original story with third-person action and stealth.
Film-inspired variety 007 Legends Its campaign is built around multiple Bond-film scenarios.
Legacy third-person story Everything or Nothing It emphasizes a film-like narrative and set pieces.

Which Bond game has the best multiplayer?

GoldenEye 007 remains the safest answer because multiplayer is central to its reputation and the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack version provides a current route with online play. It is the game to choose when your group wants the familiar Bond maps, weapons and rules rather than a new campaign.

Nightfire is the alternative for players who specifically want local multiplayer on legacy hardware. The setup is less convenient: you may need the original console, compatible controllers and a working used copy. The other games in this list should not be purchased on the assumption that they provide a modern, active multiplayer community. First Light explicitly has no multiplayer at all.

Platform guide: PS5, Xbox, PC and Nintendo hardware

PlayStation 5

007 First Light launched on PlayStation 5 on May 27, 2026, making it the direct current-platform recommendation. The older games are generally legacy purchases, so their availability depends on backward compatibility, regional storefront listings or physical resale rather than a single guaranteed route.

Xbox Series X|S

Xbox Series X|S is also a launch platform for First Light. If you want a new Bond campaign without maintaining older hardware, start there. For GoldenEye 007, check the Nintendo service route instead; no universal current Xbox release for the restored game is published.

PC

First Light launched on PC. Blood Stone has older PC availability, but regional resale and storefront status must be checked individually. No current, universal PC storefront is published for every legacy title in this list.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

On the current Nintendo Switch, GoldenEye 007 is available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. First Light is not listed for the original Switch in the supplied release information. IO Interactive confirmed a Switch 2 version for March 18, 2027, so Switch 2 owners have a dated future path to the new campaign.

How to choose without buying the wrong version

  1. Decide whether multiplayer is essential. If yes, choose GoldenEye 007 first; consider Nightfire only if you are prepared for legacy hardware.
  2. Choose your camera perspective. Pick First Light or Everything or Nothing for third-person action; pick GoldenEye or Nightfire for classic first-person shooting.
  3. Set your access requirements. Current PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC owners can buy First Light. Nintendo Switch owners can play GoldenEye through the Expansion Pack service. Legacy games require platform and region checks.
  4. Choose campaign structure. Select First Light for one original origin story, Everything or Nothing for a film-like standalone adventure, Blood Stone for a later-generation thriller or 007 Legends for multiple film scenarios.
  5. Verify the exact edition before paying. For used games, confirm the platform, region, disc or cartridge condition and included accessories. For digital or subscription access, confirm that the service and game are available in your account’s country.

A practical play order after GoldenEye

For most players, the cleanest sequence is 007 First Light first, followed by Nightfire if you want another shooter and then Everything or Nothing or Blood Stone for contrasting cinematic campaigns. Return to GoldenEye 007 whenever multiplayer is the priority. Finish with 007 Legends if you want a compilation of film-inspired missions rather than a single continuous story.

This order deliberately separates modern access from historical importance. First Light shows where Bond games are in 2026; GoldenEye explains the multiplayer and N64-shooter standard that every follow-up is measured against; the legacy titles show the different directions developers took afterward.
