The best small-tablet alternative depends on what you are replacing: the iPad mini’s software ecosystem, its pocketable size, or its performance. For a lower-cost Android tablet for reading, streaming and browsing, the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE 8.7 is the clearest candidate. Lenovo’s Legion Tab 8.8 is the performance-focused option, but you must confirm whether a listing is Gen 3 or Gen 5 before comparing specifications. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A9 is the mainstream Android choice, with memory, storage, connectivity and availability varying by market. None should be treated as an interchangeable iPad mini clone.

Start with the ecosystem, not the screen size
An Android tablet can match the general idea of a small slate while still changing how you work. App purchases, password managers, cloud storage, messaging, browser tabs, game saves and accessories may not transfer in the way you expect from iPadOS. If your phone is an iPhone and you rely on Apple-specific services or continuity features, an Android alternative may require new apps and separate setup. That can outweigh a lower purchase price.

Questions to answer before comparing models
- Do you need the same app purchases, messages and handoff features you use on an iPhone?
- Will the tablet be a companion to an Android phone, or a separate device used by several people?
- Do you need a cellular data plan, or will Wi-Fi and phone tethering be enough?
- Are you replacing a small reading and streaming screen, or a high-performance gaming device?
- Is expandable storage more valuable to you than a tightly integrated operating system?
Portability: 8.7 inches is not automatically “the same size” as an iPad mini
The iPad mini has an 8.3-inch display, while the Redmi Pad SE 8.7 uses an 8.7-inch panel. That diagonal difference alone cannot tell you which tablet will fit a jacket pocket, sling bag or one-handed grip. Aspect ratio, bezels, chassis thickness, case design and weight all affect the experience. Xiaomi describes it as an 8.7-inch LCD tablet with a 1,340 × 800 resolution and refresh rates up to 90Hz. Xiaomi also notes that not every app supports the higher refresh rate, so the setting is not a guarantee that every screen or game will run at 90Hz.
Its listed processor is MediaTek’s Helio G85, and configurations go up to 6GB of RAM. Those specifications support the tablet’s intended role as a reader, streaming screen, browser and casual-use device. They do not establish parity with the iPad mini’s performance, and no independent side-by-side benchmark is available here.

Charging and box contents are a significant regional trap. Xiaomi’s product information describes 18W charging support, but one regional package may include a 10W adapter while the UK specification page says no power adapter is included. Treat the charger as a listing-specific detail. If you want the fastest supported charging, Xiaomi recommends an 18W-or-higher compatible adapter; verify what is actually in the box before budgeting for one.

The microSD slot is useful for downloaded video, music, photos and books. It is not a way to move Android applications onto a large card on this model: Xiaomi explicitly limits external storage to media files. A card also adds a separate purchase and may have compatibility limits. Xiaomi identifies a Redmi Pad SE 8.7 cover as an optional accessory, with availability varying by region.
Lenovo Legion Tab 8.8: the performance-oriented candidate
The Legion Tab 8.8 is the shortlist’s gaming and demanding-app candidate, but the generation must be treated as a hard identification step rather than a footnote. The comparison reviewed for this guide distinguishes Legion Tab Gen 3 and Gen 5 as separate products. - processor and graphics hardware;
- display resolution and refresh rate;
- RAM and internal storage;
- dimensions and weight;
- Android version and update information;

- local warranty and availability.
The performance label is editorial positioning, not a verified claim that every Legion Tab is the fastest small tablet or that it will outperform the iPad mini in every game. No comparable independent benchmark is established for the candidates here. If gaming is your priority, compare tests for the exact generation and firmware you can actually purchase, and look for sustained-performance and thermal results rather than a single peak score.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A9: the mainstream Android candidate
The Galaxy Tab A9 is a sensible starting point for buyers who prefer a widely distributed Android line, but its name covers market-specific configurations. Use Samsung’s official materials for your market to identify the model number. Then check whether the retailer is selling the Wi-Fi or cellular version, the installed memory and storage, and the included accessories. Do not assume that a Galaxy Tab A9 listing in one country has the same radio bands or storage tier as one in another. Choose by what you will actually do
Reading, streaming and web browsing
Choose the Redmi Pad SE 8.7 when your priority is a compact screen for books, video, news, recipes and ordinary browsing and you value microSD media storage. Confirm the specific memory and storage tier: two listings with the same family name can provide different headroom for apps and downloads. If the tablet will be shared, also check user profiles, parental controls and the account setup required by the current software version.
Travel without dependable Wi-Fi
Consider a cellular configuration only after checking local bands and carrier approval. The Redmi Pad SE 8.7 4G documentation is tied to a regional specification page; it does not make every 4G model compatible with every network. Ask the carrier whether the tablet can use the intended plan, whether voice or data-only service is supported, and whether an eSIM or physical SIM is required. A Wi-Fi model plus phone tethering may be simpler if your carrier restricts tablet plans.

Storage and connectivity decisions
Internal storage versus microSD
Internal storage is where the operating system and applications live. On the Redmi Pad SE 8.7, Xiaomi documents microSD expansion up to 2TB for media files and specifically excludes application storage. That makes the card useful for videos, music, photos and documents, but it does not solve a shortage of space for large games or apps. Buy enough internal storage for the software you expect to keep installed, then use a card for media.
Wi-Fi-only versus 4G
A cellular tablet can be convenient on trains, in hotels or during outages, but the radio specification, supported bands and carrier policy are local variables. Treating regional specifications as universal
Radio bands, memory, storage, adapter inclusion, accessories and availability can change by country. The Redmi 4G documentation and charger notes demonstrate why a UK page cannot automatically answer a buyer’s question elsewhere.
Using Xiaomi’s laboratory endurance as a cross-brand battery test
Xiaomi’s advertised endurance figures are based on Xiaomi Internal Labs. They are not an independent comparison with the iPad mini, Legion Tab or Galaxy Tab A9. Real battery life depends on brightness, refresh rate, radio use, applications and network conditions.
Using a microSD card for applications on the Redmi
The manufacturer states that external storage is for media files and cannot store applications. Choose a larger internal-storage configuration if your workload is app-heavy.
