For most people choosing an iPad in 2026, the iPad Air with M4 is the best starting point: it offers more headroom for school, work, and creative apps than the entry-level iPad without requiring you to buy the Pro for its premium display and performance. Choose the iPad Pro with M5 for demanding creative work or its high-end screen, the iPad (A16) for everyday tasks at a lower tier, and the iPad mini with A17 Pro when portability and handheld reading matter most. These are use-case recommendations, not a universal ranking.
Which iPad should you buy?
Apple’s current comparison lineup includes four families: iPad Pro with M5, iPad Air with M4, iPad (A16), and iPad mini with A17 Pro. The right choice depends less on the chip name than on the work area you want, the apps you use, how often you carry the tablet, and the accessories you need.
| Model | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Air (M4) | School, work, and creative use; the most balanced choice for many buyers | Costs more than the everyday iPad; lacks the Pro’s premium display features |
| iPad Pro (M5) | Demanding creative applications, graphics-intensive work, or buyers who prioritize the display | Its premium capabilities may go unused in routine browsing, video, and productivity apps |
| iPad (A16) | Browsing, video, and mobile games | Does not support Apple Intelligence or Apple Pencil Pro, according to Tom’s Guide |
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) | Travel, handheld use, and reading novels or manga | The small screen is less suited to large documents, split-screen work, and expansive creative canvases |
TechRadar names the Air M4 its broad recommendation and the Pro M5 its performance pick. Macworld separates its recommendations by use case, including business, portability, budget, large-screen value, and laptop-replacement use. Those differences are a reminder that “best” depends on what you plan to do.
Is the iPad Air M4 the best iPad for most people?
It is the strongest general-purpose recommendation if you expect to use demanding apps, want room to grow, or plan to add a keyboard or stylus. TechRadar recommends the Air M4 for a broad range of users, including students and professionals. WIRED describes it as suitable for using an iPad as a primary school or work device, with more performance for video editing and gaming than the base iPad. Creative Bloq’s October 6, 2026 review assessed the 13-inch model using large Procreate canvases and complex 3D sculpting workflows; that is a workflow-specific evaluation, not a guarantee that every creative user needs an Air.

Choose 11 inches for a more portable work tablet
The 11-inch Air is Macworld’s business-user pick. It offers a smaller working area than the 13-inch version, so it is the more natural choice if you expect to carry the tablet frequently or use it in tight spaces.
Choose 13 inches when work area matters more
Macworld names the 13-inch Air its big-screen value pick. A larger canvas can make document work, drawing, and multitasking more comfortable, but consider how often you will carry it. The right size is a trade-off between space to work and ease of transport.

Should you buy the iPad Pro M5?
Choose the Pro if its screen and performance address a real need, such as graphics-intensive creative work, or if you specifically want a premium display. TechRadar identifies the M5 Pro as its performance pick and notes its tandem OLED display. WIRED describes the Pro’s 120 Hz OLED display and says the M5’s performance boost may matter most in graphics-intensive or AI workloads; many people may not notice it in general-purpose apps.

The Pro is not automatically the right purchase just because it is the most capable model. If your main activities are browsing, streaming, note-taking, and ordinary productivity, the Air may offer a better balance. Check the current configuration and price for the exact screen size and storage you want before deciding.

Is the iPad A16 enough for everyday use?
The base iPad is the sensible lower-cost tier for browsing, video, and mobile games, according to Tom’s Guide. That guide lists a 128GB base configuration, but configurations and availability can change, so confirm them with Apple before buying.
Tom’s Guide also reports that the A16 model does not support Apple Intelligence and supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), not Pencil Pro. If either feature matters to you, verify compatibility for the exact iPad generation on Apple’s official compatibility information before ordering an accessory. Do not assume that a Pencil or keyboard that works with another iPad will work with this one.

Is the iPad mini best for reading and travel?
The mini is the portability-focused choice. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide identify it as the model for people who prioritize carrying a small tablet, and Tom’s Guide specifically recommends it for novels and manga. Its compact screen is convenient for handheld reading and travel, but less comfortable for large documents, split-screen workflows, or creative projects that need a broad canvas. If you expect to do substantial work on screen, compare it with the 11-inch Air before choosing.
What should you compare before buying?
- Price and storage: Compare the exact capacity you need, not just the advertised starting configuration. Prices change by market and date, and storage options can differ by model.
- Screen size and display: A larger screen gives you more room for documents and creative work; the Pro is the choice to consider if its higher-end display matters to you.
- App workload: Match performance to the apps you actually use. The M5 Pro is aimed at demanding work, while everyday browsing and video do not automatically require it.
- Portability: The mini prioritizes handheld convenience. The Air and Pro families offer larger work surfaces, with 11- and 13-inch Air choices noted by the cited guides.
- Pencil and keyboard compatibility: Check the exact generation and screen size against Apple’s compatibility information before buying accessories. The A16 iPad, in particular, is reported not to support Pencil Pro.
- Cellular service: Decide whether you need connectivity away from Wi-Fi. Apple says cellular service requires a separate carrier plan, and eSIM support depends on the carrier.
How much should you pay?
Use current local pricing rather than an old review figure. Macworld reported that Apple raised prices across the range in June 2026 and listed U.S. reviewed prices of $749 for the 11-inch Air M4 and $949 for the 13-inch Air M4 after those increases. Those are dated U.S. review prices, not guaranteed current prices or prices for other regions; the same page also listed lower deal prices that can change with the market. Check Apple and authorized sellers for today’s price, configuration, and availability before you buy.

How these recommendations are grounded
The cited publications describe their own review work, not testing conducted for this article. TechRadar says it gives each listed iPad a full review and uses each tablet for a week or more for ordinary tasks. Tom’s Guide says its lab testing focuses on performance, display quality, and battery life. Creative Bloq describes testing the 13-inch Air M4 with demanding illustration and 3D workflows. Their findings are useful context, but individual workloads and priorities differ.
