The best internet and TV service for a senior is the one available at their address that fits their budget, viewing habits, and comfort with technology—not a nationwide “senior” plan. Start by checking local providers, then compare the full bill and terms. Age alone does not qualify someone for federal Lifeline support, and the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended in 2024.
How to choose internet and TV service for a senior
Make the decision in this order: identify what is available at the home, estimate how the household uses internet and television, and compare the complete monthly cost. The same provider can offer different plans in different locations, so a national “best provider” list is only a starting point.
- Check the exact service address. Search providers by the home’s address or ZIP code, then confirm availability with the provider. Fiber, cable, fixed wireless, and satellite coverage varies by location.
- List the household’s needs. Note how many people use the connection, whether they make video calls, and which live channels, local stations, sports, or recording features matter.
- Compare the full cost and terms. Include the regular rate after any promotion, equipment, installation, activation, taxes and fees, contract or cancellation terms, and data limits. Add the cost of any separate TV subscriptions.
- Check assistance eligibility. Ask about Lifeline and provider-specific low-cost plans, but verify the household meets the current rules and that the provider participates.
- Choose the simplest setup the household can use. Consider whether the service includes a modem, router, TV box, or technician visit, and whether the remote, apps, and support options will work for the people using them.
Which internet providers should you check?
Use providers as a local shortlist, not a national ranking. A 2026 comparison from BroadbandNow highlights AT&T Fiber, Xfinity, and Spectrum for different reasons: fiber performance and symmetrical speeds where available, bundling and an income-qualified plan, and cable availability with TV choices. A separate CableTV.com comparison also considers providers including CenturyLink, Cox, and T-Mobile Home Internet. Plan details and availability vary, so check current terms directly with providers before ordering.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Fiber: Check whether it reaches the address and whether upload speed supports the household’s video calls and other simultaneous use.
- Cable: It may be available where fiber is not and can be paired with cable TV. Check equipment costs, data limits, and the regular price after introductory offers.
- Fixed wireless: Availability and performance depend on the provider’s coverage at the home. Ask about expected service and any usage terms for that address.
- Satellite: It can be an option in areas with fewer wired choices. Compare its price, equipment, installation, and usage terms against other services actually available at the home.
For any plan, ask the provider to confirm the service address, monthly rate after the promotion ends, equipment charges, installation or activation fees, data cap, contract length, cancellation conditions, and whether the quoted price includes the features the household needs. Third-party comparison prices can differ because offers and terms change.
How much internet speed is needed for streaming and video calls?
There is no single speed requirement for every older adult. The right plan depends on how many people and devices use the connection at once, whether video is streamed in high definition, and whether video calls happen while other people are online. Rather than paying for a speed tier based on age, describe typical use to providers and compare the available plans’ download and upload speeds.

For a household that relies on video calls, ask about upload speed and test whether calls remain clear when other devices are streaming or browsing. If service struggles, first check whether the problem is Wi-Fi coverage, the router’s location, or the internet connection itself; a higher-speed plan will not necessarily fix a weak Wi-Fi signal in a distant room.
Are there internet discounts for seniors?
Age by itself does not establish eligibility for the federal Lifeline program. The Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), which administers Lifeline, says: “Consumers qualify for Lifeline through income or through participation in a Lifeline-qualifying program.” Eligibility can be based on qualifying income or participation in programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance, or Veterans or Survivors Pension Benefit. Check USAC’s current eligibility page for income thresholds and rules.

USAC currently lists a regular Lifeline benefit of up to $9.25 per month, or up to $34.25 for eligible people living on qualifying Tribal lands. Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household. The benefit is not automatically applied to an internet bill: consumers apply, enroll with a participating phone or internet company, and recertify annually. Confirm participation and enrollment steps with both USAC and the provider.
Providers may also have their own low-cost plans, with separate eligibility conditions. For example, Xfinity’s current Internet Essentials page lists plans at $14.95 per month for up to 75 Mbps and $29.95 per month for up to 100 Mbps. Its conditions include service availability, qualifying program participation, no Xfinity internet service in the previous 90 days, and no recent Comcast debt. Prices and eligibility can change; verify them before enrollment. Xfinity says it does not provide Lifeline benefits.

The ACP is no longer available. USAC says the program ended June 1, 2024, after Congress did not provide additional funding. Its former benefit was up to $30 per month for eligible broadband customers, or up to $75 on qualifying Tribal lands, but those amounts are not current savings. Lifeline and provider-specific plans are separate programs with their own rules. See USAC’s ACP information for the program’s status.
Should you bundle internet and cable TV?
A bundle can simplify billing and preserve a familiar live-TV experience, but it is not automatically cheaper than buying internet and television separately. Compare the total cost over the period the household expects to keep the service, including the post-promotion price, equipment, fees, and any subscriptions not included in the bundle.

Before choosing a TV plan, make a short list of must-have channels—especially local stations, news, sports, and channels watched by family members. Then check recording options, the TV box and remote, contract and cancellation terms, and whether the plan’s price changes after a promotion. A 2026 CableTV.com bundle comparison covers cable packages and streaming-based options, but its quoted prices and promotions are time-sensitive. A The Senior List comparison records TV-package prices and channel counts as of February 2026; treat that as a dated snapshot, not a current quote.
Is streaming TV a better alternative to cable?
Streaming TV may suit a household that wants to choose services separately or watch through apps, but it requires internet service and can involve multiple accounts, apps, and bills. Check whether the streaming service carries the local channels and other programming the household wants, whether it supports recording, and what it costs when all required subscriptions are added together.
Also consider setup and everyday use. Someone comfortable switching between apps may prefer streaming; someone who relies on a familiar channel guide, set-top box, or remote may find a cable package simpler. Streaming apps may work on a compatible smart TV. A streaming media player is only needed if the existing TV lacks the required apps or compatible access; confirm the TV’s connections and the service’s compatibility before buying extra hardware.
